This is just a nitpick of mine (also there's a major spoiler for those who haven't read the manga or watched the anime), but why couldn't Rin and Yukio have been raised by Maes Hughes? It would make a whole lot of sense seeing how Hughes would have experience on how to be a good father to his daughter after raising both boys. It would also deal an emotional blow to Rin and Yukio when Hughes dies. It's probably how I would've done it, but it's your story, so for what it is, it's okay.
