| Guest chapter 12 . 6/24 I think the issue with the blackmail plot is how at odds his inability to deal with it is with the rest of Jaune more mature and wordly persona. The truth is Cardin is weak and the Beacon admnitration isn't on his side so there no reason he should be able to get away with it. It doesn't feel like Jaune is forced in an impossible situation and more like his own cowardice and lack of spine is placing him on this situation, which kills the sympathy for him. Anyone in teams JNPR and RWBY except Jaune could easily deal with Cardin, sure he could take it on Jaune, but Jaune's friends could just take it back on him and their ability to escalate is far greater than Cardin's. In canon this plot arc was already pretty bad and only barely worked because the thing holding Jaune back was his pride and unwillingness to admit he needed help, here he has no reason to be so childish. Bullying targets are always isolated people because they don't have help to fight back, with the team system Beacon use and the fact that JNPR and RWBY are the two strongest in the first year its feels forced that any bullying happens at all (the same issue happens with Velvet, it's weird that team CFVY didn't just kick Cardin's teeth in). |
