Yeah thats a ... stretch. Izuku is a pragmatic person when he can help it. He obviously loves and cares for Mina, and he knows Eraser Head is best suited to protecting the other students, so it makes sense that he finds himself responsible to save Bakugou. It's not like he doesn't want to stay with Mina, it's more that right now- Bakugou needs more help.

Pretty obvious answer here: You don't focus on saving their lives in that instance. You're only more likely to get the other hurt. No, instead focus on neutralizing the harm, in this case, the baddie. That is the best answer.
