Damien NightFall, not sure if you’ll see this but regarding jaune getting hurt despite having aura. Activating aura is a conscious thing. So aura can block damage but only when you are activating your aura. We learn about this in rwby volume 5 with Oscar training with ruby.
Bright Inferno chapter 18 . 7/14
I just want to make one thing clear here, I absolutely love this fic. It's definitely a favorite of mine to come back to and reread many many times. But, this chapter is always hard for me in particular to reread. Not because the writing is bad by any means, but because the characterization of some of the characters in this chapter were... questionable since I first read this. Mainly in Blake and especially Weiss.

Weiss up to this point in the story was pretty accurate to the show, if a little extra prissy to Jaune, despite her having never meeting him prior or had him flirt with her in this story. But I brushed it off. It was mostly small things, like her complaining about every little thing she can while at Jaunes parlor and even insulting him before deciding to not even get a massage, even though she was the one who got them to go there in the first place, while praising Spa Envy and looking over every issue that was presented as she constantly said how much better it was than Jaunes, despite like I said earlier, she never even got a massage from him. It got a little annoying to me admittedly, but I shrugged it off, deciding to overlook it all since Weiss never really played that big of a role. But then I got to this one.

First of all, while I won't comment on whether or not Jaune deserves to use the 'victim card' or not, I can't say he really used it in the chapter. All he really did was confirm that he was rejected from Beacon and apologized to to Ruby for reacting the way he did, saying himself how it was unprofessional of him and even says he's happy that she managed to get in. Sure he says that her talking about getting accepted reminded him of his rejection, thus why he reacted how he did, but that alone doesn't seem like he's trying to be the victim. If he was trying to be the victim, it would result in things like him believing he was justified in reacting how he did to Ruby, or him saying that Ruby stole what could have been his, or him amping up his sadness to get as much sympathy as he can, but he doesn't do that. He says he's sorry, and shows that what he did was more of his negative emotions accidentally rearing its head for a split moment, rather than him trying to be the victim. He didn't even give them all the information, Team RWBY just managed to piece things together, resulting in Yang and Ruby feeling sad for him. Someone feeling sympathy for you doesn't automatically mean you're playing the victim card. Hell, Jaune tries to avoid the subject, before RWBY keeps piecing things together and making Jaune remember his failure, resulting in his face wincing in discomfort.

Now to the real meat of this review, Weiss. I'll be honest, Weiss is the main reason why it's hard to reread this chapter. I know some people believe Weiss to be in the right for what she said to Jaune, saying how since he didn't bother training and tried to cheat to get in, he was undeserving of a chance to get in. I'm not going to get into whether I feel Jaune deserved to get in or not, but I will point out that while we all know this as readers, Weiss doesn't. Weiss points out that since he's a masseur and seems to not understand Aura very well, he is completely unfit to attend Beacon. While the points she makes about him are true, neither really add to her argument. Firstly, not having the best understanding of Aura doesn't mean he can't improve it, or even that it's very important in the first place. Being a Huntsmen seems to be more focused on how good you can fight rather than how well you understand Aura. Don't get me wrong, Aura is still important, but would any of the kids be where they are if they didn't know how to fight? Secondly, how does having a job as a masseur make him unprepared for the workload? Jaune only opened up the place after he was rejected. This was Weiss' problem to me. She hardly knew a single thing about Jaune in this fic. All she knew, from what I can tell, is that he owns a massage parlor, works a masseur, is a pretty good cook, doesn't seem to understand Aura all too well, and was rejected from Beacon. Weiss doesn't know, and also actively avoids learning, anything about Jaune personally. She's not only the worst person there to give their opinion on his situation, but also goes on to act as if she knows way better than he himself does.

Now some may believe that Weiss is justified because she didn't know the things we do. Like how hard he's been working or how his family refused to give him proper training, but that's the problem. If she doesn't know these super important things, then she has no right to comment about it. She only has what she assumes to be the truth, which the fic has shown to be biased as she unjustifiably demeans everything about Jaunes parlor, despite him doing nothing to possibly offend her. She just hates Jaune just because. I really can't see why she's acting the way she is other than her just being too bitchy and privileged to think that her beliefs may be wrong.

And while we're here I'd like to state how I'm not a fan of Blake agreeing with Weiss on this. Her point of him not looking too strong falls flat when we have huntsmen characters like Oobleck and Port, two licensed Huntsmen who certainly don't appear on the surface to be on the level of any of them, with Oobleck looking more scraggly than Jaune. I also doubt Weiss can bench 170 lbs, but struggle to wrestle her sword out of a small boar grimms mouth. I also refuse to believe that they all can take hits from an Ursa without their Aura when a regular one is strong enough to knock down trees. No one can handle that and still be ok to fight afterwards. The chapter also tries to justify this with Blake and the others not knowing how big Jaunes Aura reserves are aside from Pyrrha. But that just isn't true. If anything, Blake was one of the few to learn just how big it was. After her Aura massage, Blake herself acknowledged how big his reserves felt, before being told that that was only a small amount of his Aura. That alone shows this attempted justification to just be plain wrong.

All this together makes for an exchange that I find difficult to read. If Weiss had an actual reason for acting as she did, knew more about Jaune than just the surface level, and gave actual good reasons why she believed he was unfit for Beacon, I would certainly have less to complain about in this chapter, but with it there, I just can't find myself rereading it without wanting to skip ahead. Like I said earlier, I still love this fic. This one thing is certainly not enough for me to just drop the fic, it's just something I wanted to put out there.

Keep up the fantastic work!
