There seems to be ALOT of changes in the story up until your story begins that are never really explained. You seem to just be pulling new things out randomly with giving a real reason.

Keep writing until you hit a wall, then evaluate the situation. If you can, work around it, but if the obstruction proves insurmounttable, then backtrack until a clearer path becomes apparent. However, going in blind is a sure-fire method of tripping yourself up, so it is imperative that you have some form of landmark in mind to guide you, even if you only have a vague idea of what it is. An end goal is preferable, though not necessarily needed if you can form several key events and find a way to link them together, in which case then you simply need to follow through on the natural progression of things and let the story play itself out. Just keep in mind that there will most definitely be cracks and holes in your story, but these can always be filled later, and a hallmark of clever writing is being able to recognize these inconsistencies early on and turn those same imperfections to your advantage.

It sounds absurdly simple and obvious to anyone with half a brain, and it most certainly is, but you'd be surprised at how often your mind can forget something so fundamental. After all, you've been breathing literally since day one, but you still get hiccups every now and again, don't you?
