Sorry for not updating! I've been really busy lately with school and everything, but hopefully I'll try updating more often. As always, reviews are always appreciated! I would love to see your opinions of everything. Thank you and enjoy! :)
Jason stared across the room at the two vials laying on the floor. It has been weeks since he slept on his own bed. He knew the last person that could have placed those pills was Charlie, yet he found himself not wanting to believe it. A range of questions and emotions raced through his mind. Could it be Charlie? Were there signs? If there were, how could he have missed them? He was the second Robin, the once chosen ward of the Dark Knight, and a trained detective. How could it be that his guard was let down long enough for her to steal from his own medicine cabinet? As he continued glaring at the floor, with both palms clenching onto his bed sheets, he felt himself becoming overwhelmed with feelings of confusion, rage, and most of all, betrayal.
Just as he was debating between his next course of actions he heard his door, followed by a familiar voice.
"Rise and shine kiddo," Dick called as he entered Jason's room.
Jason stared blankly at him for a few seconds before realizing that the sun was up, and the time spent on the mysterious vials consumed his whole night.
"What are you doing here?" Jason muttered. He wasn't in the mood for the optimism that followed Dick everywhere he went. He still wasn't sure how to approach the situation presented to him. The thought that had been roaming through his mind the entire night was the possibility of Charlie betraying them. He tried giving her the benefit of the doubt, but given his history he didn't trust anyone that easily.
"We got two days until Crow's shipment with no solid plan to act on. We also didn't consider the possibilities of Crow bringing extra backup. Maybe we need to talk about if we should also be bringing backup. I know that Damian would jump on the chan-"
"No," Jason replied sternly. He glared at Dick from across the room as he slowly walked to his bathroom, passing by the vials. "No Drake, no Brown, no Cain, and definitely nothing going by the name of Wayne. No Batbrats. You're lucky that I even let you tag along."
Dick sighed, scratching the back of his neck. "Well what are we going to do about a certain Sage sleeping on your couch downstairs? What about Charlie?"
Jason stopped walking the second he heard her name. He let out a deep breath and shut his eyes. If his thoughts were right, Charlie should be the last person that comes near the shipment. "We got what we need from her. She can stay put while we do the real work."
"She is not going like the sound of that.."
"Keep brooding like that and the big man might want to adopt you too."
Charlie turned her head slightly to see Dick taking a seat next to her on the fire escape. It was two days until her biggest wish was going to happen, and yet she couldn't get her mind off of Jason. The whole day, from the second he walked downstairs, he had been giving her nothing but the cold shoulder, along with some grunts. If she was lucky enough, her teasing would give her a one worded response. She didn't know what was happening. Was she the only one that felt some kind of connection the night before, even if she didn't know what that connection was?
"I think I'm just a bit too old to be adopted, but I would gladly take on some inheritance."
"I'll let him know," Dick chuckled. "So what's up with Jason? He seems grumpier than usual."
Charlie bit her lip, still thinking about how his behavior greatly contrasted their night before. "If you have an idea I would love to hear it, because as far as I know I don't exist to him today."
"Yeah, I kind of noticed that too," Dick responded wearily. "Did anything happen last night? I know you guys have this.. tendency to pick on each other."
She frowned and thought back to their moment in the gym. Her chest pressing onto his, and the intense stare he focused on her lips. For a rare moment, both of them were at a loss for words. She cleared her throat and diverted her gaze from Dick. "Nothing happened last night. At least I think that it was nothing.."
Dick squinted his eyes at her, feeling a bit curious to know what she meant exactly. But always the gentleman, he let it slide. For now.
"Well whatever put Jason in this mood shouldn't be anything to worry about. He'll be back to his stubborn grumpy self once he punches a few faces."
"Yeah," Charlie mumbled, biting the inside of her cheeks. "Just two more days.."
After their chat on the fire escape Dick told her that he had to leave. This left her alone with Jason, who made the extra effort to always avoid being in the same room as her. Charlie felt a small ache within her when she thought about how stayed up all night replayed the events that happened in the gym. She woke up that morning a bit excited to see Jason. She wasn't sure what that moment in the gym meant, or if it even meant anything at all. To further cause confusion, she wasn't sure if she even wanted it to mean anything. All she knew was that at that moment she felt something that she hadn't felt in a long time. She just wasn't sure if she was ready to find out what it meant. But with Jason constantly shuttering her out and avoiding her, Charlie had to rethink everything from the night before. She was now questioning if it was all in her head, or if she might have sent off a wrong signal.
She was sitting on the couch when she heard the shower finally turning off from upstairs. In two days this whole thing might hopefully be over. There'd be no more Crow, no more hiding, no more debts to pay off, and maybe no more Jason. The last one stung a bit. She decided that this might be the last chance she has to be alone with him, and through all their bickering and arguments, they had some genuine moments. She was used to having a screaming match with him, but this cold shoulder act was hitting her hard. She felt that she deserved to at least know why he was acting so strange around her.
When she reached his bedroom door, she was overwhelmed with emotions that she didn't even consider knocking. She opened the door and barged into the room to find a shirtless Jason Todd standing in the middle of his bedroom, with nothing more than a towel hanging loosely around his waist.
"What the fuck?" Jason shouted as he watched her eyes open wide with embarrassment, and her face turn a slight pink. It wasn't the first time she saw him shirtless, but it definitely was the first time she saw him this exposed.
"Shit.. I was.. not expecting you to be like that.." She said, fumbling over her words. She turned around, giving him the chance to quickly throw on the nearest pair of sweatpants he could find.
He glared at her with annoyance as he threw his towel at her, signaling that it was safe to turn around. "What the fuck did you expect when you barge into another man's room?"
Charlie stared at him for a moment, gathering the courage she suddenly lost a few minutes before. With a deep breath she bit her lips before speaking. "I wanted to come and just, you know, talk."
Jason bit his tongue and looked away. He knew that his avoidance that day was obvious, but he couldn't bring himself to act like everything was normal. Standing in front of him was the girl that made him question his rule of not getting attached to anyone. A girl that wasn't ever supposed to be part of the equation, and just suddenly became the biggest part. She was the one that infuriated him like no one else did, but also made him laugh in a way that no one else ever heard. Yet she was also the same girl that had been secretly taking pills from his medicine cabinet, and hid them from him. He let his guard down and got distracted, and she was calming whatever addiction she had with pills from his closet. If she suddenly overdosed one night, he would have inadvertently helped her and wouldn't even have known. The thought of being distracted disgusted Jason. He wasn't supposed to be this weak. It's not how he was trained, and it wasn't going to help his missions. It took Jason the whole day to think about, but he finally decided that the best thing for everyone around him was to not have any distractions. Charlie, he also decided, was a distraction.
"I don't have time to talk," he replied sternly.
Charlie's stare transformed into pleading eyes when she heard the tone in his voice.
"It seems like you haven't had any time for me at all today," she said.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Jason turned his back to her and tried to walk past her through the door. He didn't know where he'd go, but he couldn't stand there a minute longer. He didn't want to deal with any of this. But his steps were stopped when Charlie angrily threw the towel at him, and stepped to the side to block the doorway.
"Bullshit!" she shouted. "You know for a fact that the whole day you've been acting like I don't exist! I don't know what's going on in your little head Jaybird, but I don't deserve to be treated like this!"
The two stood in his room for a few moments, silently glaring at each other. Charlie waited for Jason to reply, to say anything at all, but he just continued to look down at her. Finally, she ran a hand through her hair and broke the silence.
"Is this about last night?" she whispered. "Is it about what happened in the gym?"
Jason's eyes softened at the mention of their moment in the gym, but he kept silent. Instead he brushed against her and made his way out into the hallway. Charlie's eyes dropped to the floor, and took in a short gasp as she tried to conceal how hurt she felt. She clenched her fists and took a deep breath, turning her heel to follow him into the hallway.
"Fuck you!" She didn't even realize the words flew out of her mouth, or the small tears that started gathering in her eyes, until she saw Jason quickly turn around in shock and anger.
"What?"
Charlie couldn't feel anything but complete anger boiling inside of her. Jason wasn't even trying to give her an explanation, and she was tired of living her whole life being treated like shit. Out of all the people she had in her life, Jason was the last one that could ever make her feel that way again. Her life was going to have a fresh start in just two days, and she wasn't going to let anyone bring her down again. Charlie let the anger consume her as she marched towards Jason, shouting out everything she had bottled up inside of her.
"I said fuck you Jason! You don't get to fuck around with my feelings like that! I deserve better because I have been through enough shit in this lifetime and I sure as hell don't need anymore from you! So fuck you if you want to pretend that we didn't have a moment last night, or any other night. Fuck you for ignoring my existence this whole day. And especially fuck you for making me think that there was actually someone in the world that I can trust, or someone that genuinely cares about me. Fuck you Jason! Fuc-"
"Trust?! You want to talk about trust Charlie?!" Jason stormed past her and into his room. He wasn't thinking straight and only felt betrayal. He reached into his drawer and slammed it shut. Charlie remained standing in the hallway, shocked from both of their sudden outbursts.
"Trust?" he scoffed, entering the hallway again. "That's real gold sweetheart. Yeah, let's talk about trust!" He threw something by Charlie's feet. When she looked down, she all of a sudden felt her legs weaken. She crouched on the floor and covered her mouth, as tears silently streamed down her face.
"Let's start of with talking about what the fuck these were doing behind my bed."
Charlie couldn't bring herself to look into Jason's eyes. She didn't want to see the rage that clouded his blue eyes, or the disgust that was in them. She wanted to them him how sorry she was, how much she regrets going down this path, and how she needed help. Before she can say any of those things, however, Jason continued voicing his anger.
"This whole time I thought that we were helping you. Dick and I were giving you a place to start fresh, and all we needed in exchange was for you to be honest. But what do you do instead? You steal from my cabinet to feed into your own addiction." Jason ran his hands through his hair in frustration as a new thought entered his mind. "Is that why you went back to Crow?!"
He found his answer in Charlie's body movements.
"Holy fuck Charlie.. We could have helped you! Was risking your own fucking life worth this shit?! You fucking went back to Crow! Do you know what could have happened?!"
"I could have ruined your whole fucking mission right Jason?" Charlie spat out. She found the strength to stand up and tried wiping away the tears, fueled by the angry thought that Jason only cared about his mission. Why else would he have brought it up? "I'm sorry that I'm so fucked up Jason. I'm sorry that I could have went back and completely fucked everythin-"
"No! You could have fucking died Charlie!" Jason immediately screamed. Both himself and Charlie were taken aback from his emotional response.
"You want to talk about how you found someone that you can trust and let your guard down around?" Jason whispered. "Well I thought I found that too.. I guess I was wrong."
With nothing more to say, Jason turned around and walked back into his bedroom, closing the door while Charlie continued to stare at the floor, speechless and crying.
