Percy wondered what The Fates were thinking.

Percy and Annabeth had gone on many dangerous quests, fought Gaea AND her children, and had been to Tartarus and back.

And this was how it ended for them?

They were borrowing his Mom's vehicle (not Paul's this time...) and were going to go for a drive, him and Annabeth. Just a peaceful drive away from training, away from parents, Immortal and mortal, and just so they could be together.

Having great plans for the night, and afraid to mess it up, Percy was kind of jittery. He was trying to hide it, and he couldn't tell if Annabeth could see it in him, and he hoped she didn't.

They drove around, stopping every once in awhile, until night came. After the light turned green, Percy started to turn his mom's car to head to the beach, when a speeding car rammed into them, and they were flung around like dolls.

A few minutes later, when Percy regained consciousness (barely, I might add), Percy looked over at Annabeth. Her neck was hanging at a sickening angle, and there was a sharp shard of glass sticking out of her chest. Percy reached for Annabeth's wrist to take a pulse, even though there was no hope.

And he was right.

Sobbing lightly to himself, he looked down at the state he was in, and it wasn't much different from Annabeth's. He felt a few crushed ribs, a collapsed lung, and one rib was sticking out, bleeding fast. Percy sighed in disappointment at his foiled plans for that night.

But he reached into his coat pocket, wincing at the pain, and pulled out the small, gray colored box that matched Annabeth's stormy, always determined and confident eyes. He opened it slowly and looked down at the VERY expensive two-thousand dollar ring, with one big diamond in the center, and three little diamonds going down each side. He pulled it out gently, reached over and put it on Annabeth's ring finger.

And when Percy died in that car, he never let go of her hand.
