I'm Ky, a Kairu Champion. I race around the world to find a powerful energy known as Kairu. Not long ago, Lokar unleashed a power called Shadow Kairu. After going on a journey, I found Prism Kairu, a force I thought had the power to change Shadow Kairu back into normal Kairu. After using it, instead of turning all the Shadow Kairu back, it only worked on Kairu that had already been found. The rest of it transformed into something not Shadow or Pure Kairu. This new Gray Kairu changes from good to bad depending on who has it. Lokar also has a new team of E-Teens that have a type of move called a Violet Move, which increases their Kairu strength during a battle. With the odds stacked against us, we have to press on to fight Lokar and save the world from him and his Dark Teams. My quest is to save the world from Lokar by conquering all types of Kairu, and to one day ascend to the level of
REDAKAI!
Master Boaddai sat in his room, in the lotus position as he meditated. Maya carefully looked in, her face full of questions.
"I know you're there Maya," he said. She gave him a sheepish look.
"Sorry Master Boaddai," she said as she came in. "I just… after what happened yesterday with Rueth, I wanted to know…" She trailed off.
"Know what Maya," he asked.
"Was everything you said about me the truth," she finally asked after a long silence. "I know you told me you found me on a doorstep of the monastery, but I can't help but wonder if that was true. You knew I was Lokar granddaughter, but you never told me. How could you have known I was his granddaughter if you found me on the doorstep? Was there a note you never showed me that explained everything?" He sighed.
"The moment you found out about Lokar, I knew this day would come," he said. "I only did what your mother asked of me." Maya had an astonished look on her face.
"My mother," she said in disbelief. "You mean you actually knew her?" Master Boaddai nodded.
"Yes. She was a brilliant girl, and a very talented Kairu Warrior. If it weren't for her father, she would've made an excellent Redakai."
"What happened," she asked.
"Very similarly what happened to you when Lokar had Team Radikor turn you. She was always a girl with a good nature. Then one day she wasn't. Her and her mother suddenly changed and until I met with her years later, I had no idea why. Then, one day, she came to the monastery, and everything fell into place." He pat the ground in front of him. "I suggest you sit down. This will be a bit to process." Maya nodded and sat down. "Now, it's not a long story, but every detail is very important."
A young woman with bright blue hair peaking out of the cowl if her cloak was lurking around the halls of a dark castle in an icy, desolate landscape, carrying a small bundle of blankets in her arms. She looked around and dodged behind an archway, hidden by darkness as ghost soldiers passed through. When they were gone, she darted out and ran for the door. Once she got on the other side, let out a sigh of relief. She then held the bundle in the inside of her cloak to shelter it from the wind. It started wriggling and crying softly.
"Shhhh," said the woman gently, her amber eyes filled with warmth. "Don't worry Maya. We'll get somewhere safe. Mommy won't let anyone hurt you " The little baby's face poked out if the bundle, her bright blue hair and amber eyes matching her mother's, as well as blue marks on her face.
The woman looked around and found a cave. She entered and looked at a show mobile. She climbed in, putting Maya in a basket on the floor in front of her. With that, she revved up the snow mobile and drove away.
Lokar paced around a dark room where there were several alien teenagers. He was clearly displeased with the news he had received.
"None of you saw her leave," he shouted out. "Do you expect me to believe that Laenna just disappeared into thin air?!"
"None if us even knew she was trying to leave," said a purple teenage girl. "Maybe she has some sort if new Kairu teleport ability "
"My daughter may be talented, but she's not that talented! Leave me. Go find my daughter and my grandchild NOW!" They all nodded and ran off.
It was morning at a peaceful monastery in China. In the courtyard, there were three people. There was an old man, fit and experienced, a young man with black hair, bright blue eyes, and the starting of a beard, and a young woman with brown hair, violet eyes, and an obvious baby bump.
"Good morning team," said the old man, his voice strong and steady. "I trust that you both slept well." The young man smiled.
"Yes we did Master Boaddai," replied the young man. The young woman rolled her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Speak for yourself Connor," she said. "Your kid was keeping me up all night." She pointed down at her stomach. He laughed and pulled her close with one arm.
"You mean our kid. Ky is your son too Rachel," he said. She laughed and rolled her eyes.
"She could be our daughter and be a Rue for all you know." Connor smiled and nuzzled his face into her shoulder.
"I know." Master Boaddai cleared his throat.
"As good as it is to see you two so close after all of these years, I think it'd be a good idea to start today's lesson." Connor and Rachel reluctantly let go of each other.
"Yes Master Boaddai," they both replied. Suddenly, Laenna staggered into the courtyard, looking sickly and holding Maya close to her, obscuring her from view. As they noticed her, Connor got in front if Rachel and got ready for a Kairu Challenge. Master Boaddai went on the defensive as well.
"What are you doing here," Connor demanded to know. Laenna just looked at him and then passed out, landing on her side. Maya started crying not long after her mother hit ground. Rachel gasped in shock.
"A baby," she questioned as she walked over to her. Master Boaddai pushed Rachel back.
"Don't," he instructed. "It could be a trap sent by Lokar." He went over himself, gently reaching his hand towards the child. She grabbed his finger very firmly and shoved it in her mouth. Master Boaddai smiled and gently picked up the little girl. "I don't believe this is a trap," he said, turning to his students. "Take Laenna inside. She doesn't seem to have anything harmful with her. I will take care of the child." Connor and Rachel looked at him in shock
"Master Boaddai, she's Lokar's daughter," Connor argued.
"I agree," said Rachel. "We can't just treat her like a guest!"
"Do you not feel her Inner Kairu," Master Boaddai asked. "It is weakening. I doubt she would risk this if she was planning anything against us. And even if she was, why would she bring an infant who is clearly her daughter? No mother would risk her child like this. Now do as I say." They looked at Laenna suspiciously, but nodded.
"Yes Master Boaddai," they said, supporting Laenna and carrying her inside. Master Boaddai looked down at Maya.
"This is quite the situation, isn't it?"
Laenna woke up later, tucked into a bed. Once she realized she didn't have Maya with her, she sat up.
"Maya," she called out in panic.
"Calm down," said a voice to her right. "She's right here." Laenna looked and saw Master Boaddai holding Maya, who seemed content in the man's arms. Laenna sighed in relief.
"Good," she said, "I made it after all."
"Yes you did," Master Boaddai replied. "The question is, why? You have been an enemy of ours for years. Why would you choose now to come to us?" She looked down at her lap.
"Master Boaddai, you knew me as a child. You knew I was good." He nodded. "I always was. But my father… when he turned evil, he told me I had to join him. I refused. I was planning on escaping here, but he… he did something to me. Used some sort of a Blue Attack that took me over and turned me evil and obedient." She looked at Maya's face, which had blue marks. "That's why Maya has those blue marks on her face. Because when she was conceived, I was still under Lokar's control." Master Boaddai rubbed his chin.
"I wouldn't put it past him," he said. "But how did you break out of his control?" She smiled.
"There was… a man. He was sweet and kind. I met him while stealing a powerful relic for my father that could strengthen Kairu. Once I met him, I found myself sneaking out and disobeying my father. That man helped me see through the Attack and I was myself again, but not until after I found out I was pregnant." She looked down at Maya. "That man is Maya's father. He has no idea that I had a child with him. I thought it would be better to protect him from my father. Please, don't bring him into this." Master Boaddai nodded.
"I won't. But, why come here?" She took in a deep breath.
"I'm dying," she said. "I have a sickness that can't be cured, most likely a side effect of breaking through the Blue Attack on my own, and the long term affect of the Blue Attack in general. I decided that if I was going to die, I would die making sure my daughter didn't suffer the same fate I did. She wouldn't be forced to fight for Lokar. Instead, she would be given a choice. I saw many potential futures with the Redakai. Many futures of her growing up under their tutelage, as well as being raised away from Kairu. In those where she was adopted by a new family, away from Kairu, Lokar found her and she was kidnapped, raised to do his bidding. Only under the Redakai was she safe. At least… she was safe until she turned 14. For some reason, I couldn't see the ultimate out come of this choice I made. I don't know whether she'll ever know her lineage, or if she'll ever find her father. All I know is everything about her life up until she turns 14. In the end, I saw that her being here was the safest for her to grow up and choose her own path once she reaches that age, and once I made the choice I could see snippets of her future after. Those snippets gave me more hope for her than any of the concrete visions I had, so I chose to bring her here. It will give her a chance to learn, to love in ways I never had the chance." She looked at Boaddai with pleading eyes. "Please, I don't have much longer. Will you raise Maya?" Master Boaddai nodded.
"Of course." Laenna sighed in relief.
"Good, that's all I wanted." She held her arms out. "May I please hold my daughter?" Master Boaddai handed over Maya reluctantly.
"Of course." He smiled at how gently Laenna held Maya. "She looks a great deal like you." Laenna smiled and nodded.
"Yes, she does. I'm glad. That way Lokar will never know who her father is." She looked over at Master Boaddai. "Master Boaddai, promise me you will never tell her about me, or her grandfather." Master Boaddai's eyes opened in surprise.
"Never tell her," he asked incredulously, "but surely she has a right to know!" Laenna looked back down at Maya.
"I know she does, but I'd rather have her not," she replied. "I know it's cruel and selfish, but I wish I was never born as Lokar's daughter. And I don't want her choices in life to be influenced by the fact that she is Lokar's granddaughter. I want her to choose things simply because she wants them, not because she's either expected to do them, or wants to do what others think she won't do. I don't want her to be evil because Lokar is her grandfather. I don't want her to be good to prove everyone else wrong. I want her to be good because she believes it's what she should do. And if she wishes to be evil, which I'd rather not have her be, but it's her path, and I want her to choose it because she wants it to be her path, not because her grandfather walks it. She deserves to have a path of her own making. I want her to have a place to grow and make mistakes and learn. I want her to have a choice, a choice I never had."
"I understand," he said. "Tell me, how much longer do you have to live?" She looked down.
"I suspect a few months, two at the least. Long enough for me to leave and lead Lokar away from Maya." She started getting out of the bed, but Master Boaddai held out a hand.
"Wait. Shouldn't you stay here?" She shook her head.
"I have to leave. I have to keep moving, until I die. I need Lokar to keep searching for Maya and me. He can't know that I left her here or he'll come after her. Once she's old enough to fight on her own, he won't bother trying to take her. Then he'll resort to trickery and the like." She handed Maya back to Master Boaddai. "I trust you to let her make her own choices when that time comes." He nodded.
"Of course. It is not my place to make her stay on the path of a Redakai." Laenna smiled.
"No, it's not." She started heading towards the door, but then stopped, staying silent for a minute before turning back to Master Boaddai. "If she ever… asks about me, tell her you never knew me… tell her I just left her on the step on a monastery." His eyes opened with shock once more.
"But don't you think it would cause resentment towards you," he asked. Laenna nodded.
"I know… that's what I'm counting on. I'm hoping if she thinks that if you don't know who her mother is, she won't ask about her past. She'll hate the mother who abandoned her, and never ask about me ever again. At least, that's my hope." She turned around and smiled at him, tears in the corners of her eyes. "I know you'll take care of my little girl." She walked back over to him and stood over Maya, who was giggling. She tried her hardest not to sob. "Maya, I know you have the potential to become a wonderful person. I know that you can do great things. I know you'll resent me, but I hope that one day you'll understand that everything I did was for you. I love you so much, and I know you'll grow up to be loved by so many. I've seen it. I know you'll be extraordinary." A few tears fell on Maya's marks. The little girl just kept giggling and started reaching up for her mother. Laenna didn't grab her, and merely kissed her forehead. "I love you. I love you with all of my heart. Even when I die, I will always be with you." She looked up at Master Boaddai, wiping her tears away. "I know you'll protect her, but it's so hard to leave." He nodded.
"I know. You don't have to go. You can always stay here. We will protect you." Laenna shook her head.
"I can't. I'd be putting Maya in danger here, even if I'm only still here for two months. Besides, I don't want her to have any memories of me. If she does, she'll never stop looking for me, and instead she'll only find Lokar. Please, promise me you'll never tell her." He nodded.
"I won't." She smiled and let her tears flow.
"Then good bye forever, Master Boaddai. Good bye Maya." She rubbed her daughter's head gently. "Grow up to make your own choices. Grow up to be loved. I already love you so much." With that, she walked away.
"I never did see her again after that day," Master Boaddai said. "I have no idea where she ended up, or when she passed." Maya's eyes were full of tears at the end of the story.
"Why? I know she asked you, but why tell me now? After all these years?" he sighed.
"Because, you deserve to know how deeply she loved you. She could've been selfish and chosen to bring you on the run with her, and with the skills Laenna had, she easily could've avoided Lokar up until her death, and brought you somewhere else. Instead, she looked into your future and found what she believed was the safest place for you. She gave up those precious months with her only child to protect you. She gave up everything for you. Her family, her home. I didn't want you living the rest of your life thinking she didn't care. She cared far too much, and that ultimately is why you ended up here. She loved you Maya, with all of her heart." Maya nodded, wiping away the tears and looking down, thinking.
"I know that now." She looked back at him. "But you really have no idea who my father is?" Master Boaddai nodded.
"I haven't the faintest idea. Perhaps if you didn't look so much like your mother I would, but you are nearly identical to her. I have my suspicions though. After all, there were many powerful Kairu Warriors around the same age as your mother at the time." Maya looked shocked.
"You mean, there were warriors other than Team Vertou?" He laughed.
"Or course Maya," he replied. "I wasn't the only Redakai who was training students. The only reason Master Atoch and I are the only ones with students currently is because we are the youngest of the Redakai, or we were before Connor became one. The rest are planning for the future. I will be training new Kairu Warriors until I pass on, but the other Redakai have important matters to attend to. Now they can't afford students. But at one point or another, all of us had students. And there were many young men who could've been your father, but many of them left the path of Kairu. I suppose you may never know who your father is." Maya nodded.
"I understand. Still, I'm happy to know my mother cared, and I understand why she didn't want you telling me about her, or telling me about Lokar." She stood up. "I'm gonna go to my room now." He nodded.
"Alright then." She got up and quietly went to her room.
Rueth sat in the same barely decorated room of the monastery, looking out the window. She looked at the screen of her X-Reader, which was cracked. She sighed heavily and just laid down on the bed.
"Can I come in Rue," asked Connor from the other side of the door.
"My name isn't Rue," she replied.
"I'll take that as a 'no'," he said.
"No… you can come in…" The door opened and Connor came in.
"How are you since yesterday?" She glared at him.
"I just found out that I was kidnapped as a baby and forced to do the bidding of the most evil man in the universe under the pretense that he cared for me and wanted to cure me of an ailment that he himself gave me. Not only that, but I've been fighting against my biological family this entire time and somehow, none of you guys never found the circumstances of my infant death suspicious, and that Rueth isn't even my real name and it's just a slightly altered version of my birth name," she said in a total deadpan. "How exactly do you think I'm feeling?" Connor sighed.
"I know this can't be easy-" She glared at him.
"Defeating Team Stax wasn't easy. Training a new warrior that was older than me in less than a month wasn't easy. Dealing with that warrior after she had a mental breakdown wasn't easy. This is near impossible to deal with!" She flop down on the bed face down, burying her face in a pillow. Clearly, she didn't want to deal with this. He gently pet her head.
"I know that this is impossible to deal with. I-I don't know how to be a father to a teenage daughter either. This isn't going to be easy for the both of us, but I'm sure we can get through it. You, me, and Ky."
"I don't want this to be with you and Ky," she said through her pillow. "I want my life back!" She sat up and glared at him. "How did you even know that I was your daughter?! I've never seen you before a day in my life!" He sighed.
"I had my suspicions. When Master Boaddai told me about your team, and told me how Ky described you, I couldn't believe it. A powerful Kairu Warrior with bright violet eyes? If you didn't know, violet eyes are the rarest eye color for humans. I thought it couldn't be a coincidence." He looked out the window. "But I couldn't help but wonder how it could've been possible. I buried you myself.
"Then Ky ended up swapping places with another version of himself. When he did, he found a timeline where you were not only alive and healthy, but under the tutelage of Master Boaddai your whole life. A timeline where your mother was still alive. He confirmed that you were indeed my daughter and his sister. So I went to your grave. And when I opened the coffin, there was nothing, not even bones. Lokar switched you out with a Kairu double, and that's how I never noticed. It looked exactly like you. But after long enough, it faded away. After all, it was only Kairu. It can't stay in one place or form for too long. But even when I really thought you were gone, I never stopped missing you. You were my daughter, and I loved you very much." She looked down at her lap.
"Every day, I wondered why my family abandoned me. I wondered why they hated me so much as a baby. And I wondered why Lokar decided to take me in and care for me." She clutched a pillow tightly. "The worst thing is, I really thought he cared about me! He acted like such a kind and caring man! He always listened to my problems! He always acted like he cared about me! He called me the granddaughter he never had, and I… I told him he should just consider me his daughter cause I thought of him as my father!" She pounded her fist on the bed. "I never knew how horrible he was! I never realized that the reason he asked for the Kairu was to keep it for himself! I always thought it was so he could purify it for whenever I needed it! I thought… I thought he cared about me…" She wiped her eyes. He went in to hug her, but stopped.
"Rue… th. It's going to be okay. I won't say I understand how hard this is for you, but I empathize with you. And if you'd rather not stay, I understand. I'd completely understand if you went back to Lokar." She looked at him with surprised eyes.
"Wh-What? You would?" He nodded.
"Of course. After all, he raised you, not me. As much as I wanted to, I never got the chance. But he's the one that fed you, clothed you, and taught you everything. He taught you to speak, to read and write, all of that." She blushed and looked down.
"Actually I uh… never learned how to read or write…" Connor looked at her in shock.
"What?"
"Lokar thought learning to be a Kairu Warrior was more important. He said that once I was cured of my ailment, he would teach me how to read." Connor stood up.
"Well that's no good! You can't be a proper Kairu Warrior if you can't read! Come on, it's time you learned how to read!" He held his hand out to her. She hesitated, but took it.
"Okay…"
Boomer, Maya, and Ky were outside, just laying in the grass.
"When was the last chance we got to just sit here and relax," asked Maya. "No Kairu hunts, no tournaments, no training, no E-Teens?"
"Forever I guess," said Boomer. "But I'm finding it hard to relax." Ky sat up.
"Me too," he said. "I should be out helping Rueth get adjusted to life here. I'm her big brother. It's my job."
"We should let your dad handle it," said Maya. "I mean, he's a Redakai. I'm sure he can."
"Yeah but I'm the one who told her she was really my sister," he replied. "I should be there to help her through all of this. I'm her brother."
"Chill Ky," said Boomer. "We need to relax every now and then, and we can't do that if we're always so high strung. We need time to relax, and maybe think up a plan." Ky looked at Boomer sadly.
"I'm sorry, with everything that's going on I completely forgot about Sara," he said. "We'll get her back too, don't worry. Lokar had her under his thumb because he had Jeremy, Paul and Lexi, right? So we've got the first step down. The next step is letting her know and seeing where that takes us." Maya nodded.
"And we will get through to her," she said. "I know we will. She's good at heart, I felt it in her Kairu. Whatever's causing her to change, it wasn't her."
"Maybe a kiss of true love will break the evil spell," Ky said jokingly.
"That's not really funny Ky," Boomer replied, glaring at his best friend. Maya sat up.
"Actually… that's… that's not a bad idea," she said. Boomer and Ky just looked at her in confusion. "Remember when I was under the power of that Blue Attack, Lokar's Shadow?" They both nodded. "My mother was under the same Attack for years." Ky and Boomer both gasped.
"Your mother," asked Ky. "I thought Master Boaddai found you on the doorstep and that he never met your mother!"
"I know," she said, "but apparently, he was lying about all of that. My mother came and delivered me to Master Boaddai personally. She asked him not to tell me about any of it so that it wouldn't affect my life. She didn't want me to see myself as just Lokar's granddaughter. She wanted me to see myself as, well, me. She told Master Boaddai that she was able to break out of his control because someone helped her do it. If Lokar's Kairu is what made Sara go bad, then maybe Boomer can fix her!" Boomer thought about it.
"Yeah, maybe, but wouldn't Sara have to feel the same way," he asked.
"I think she might," said Ky. "I mean, didn't her mom say she's never had a boyfriend? What if she was waiting for you?" Boomer blushed.
"Don't even joke about that Ky."
Rueth and Connor were reading out of a Doctor Seuss book about the alphabet.
"Do you have the letters down?" She nodded.
"I think so. Should I copy it down?" He nodded.
"Yes, you should. It's good practice and it'll help you remember better." She took a piece of paper and a pen and started writing down the letters, uppercase and lowercase. He smiled as she wrote them clumsily with her right hand. "Try writing with your left hand." She looked up at him in confusion.
"What? Why," she asked.
"You mother was left handed," he said. "I think that it'd be a good idea to try it."
"Okay," she said in an unsure voice. She switched hands and started writing, and while not pretty, it was a lot more legible. Connor smiled. "See, you're getting the hang of it!"
Jeremy, John, and Elizabeth all sat in a room.
"You mean to tell me that this is all your fault," said Elizabeth to John in anger. "You lied to me for years!" John sighed.
"It's not that easy," he said. "I did what I did to protect you from Lokar!"
"Great job you did there," she said sarcastically, crossing her arms over her chest and rolling her eyes. "Now he has Sara!"
"Mom, Dad did his best," said Jeremy in his father's defense. "Now we have to bring Sara back home!"
"Jeremy's right," said John. "I don't know what Lokar did to her, but she isn't herself. I think that the next time Team Stax gets called out on a Kairu mission, we should go out with them and try to get her back. Then all we have left to worry about for that team is Mae."
"Who's Mae," asked Elizabeth.
"A cruel, childish girl who likes to toy with people." He rubbed his chin. "Something tells me Lokar has plans for that girl. I just don't know what."
"Mind if I cut in," asked Master Boaddai, stepping into the doorway.
"No, go ahead Master Boaddai," said John as he gestured to the empty area in front of him. Master Boaddai came in and took a seat in front of John.
"I feel as if we shouldn't have Elizabeth or Jeremy anywhere near Sara nor Lokar," he advised. "Sara has been very volatile, and has been set out to hurt even Boomer, her closest friend. I think it'd be best to let the Kairu Warriors handle it themselves."
"Not a chance," Elizabeth declared. "I haven't seen my daughter in months! I finally have a chance to see her, to be with her, and I am taking it!"
"It's too risky for your-"
"I went through childbirth twice! I think I can handle my daughter and this Mae person!"
Ky got up and started stretching.
"You know, I think this is the first off day we've had in a while that wasn't interrupted."
"Yeah," agreed Maya with a smile as she looked up at him. "This has been nice, just relaxing."
"We do need a recharge every now and then," said Boomer as he got up. "But I think we should go back and start training. We can't let ourselves get too lazy!"
Lokar sat on his throne, his eyes closed as he recharged his Kairu through the Kairu depository.
"I know you're there Mae," he said. "Why are you here? I did not summon you." Mae came out from the shadows, frowning as she looked at her mentor.
"Master Lokar," she started, "why did you tell Rueth that she was Connor Stax's child? Why didn't you try and convince her that the Redakai were lying like you always have? And why did you tell her that you gave her the sickness she has?"
"Because," he replied, opening his eyes and smirking, "I no longer need her. As far as I'm aware, her illness is incurable. With me or not, that will never change, and it's a fatal flaw in the team dynamic now that the Kairu Warriors of the Redakai know how to keep her from absorbing Kairu. She became more troublesome than it was worth to keep. Not to mention, I have my eye on another girl to lead your team." He saw Maya in his eyes, sitting in her room, smiling and reading a book.
"You mean Maya, right?"
"Indeed." He started to laugh. "Her birthday gift started her transformation, and soon it will be complete, and she will turn into my perfect evil granddaughter, ready to rule the universe at my side!"
