Oh goodness.
A tall wall of rock was in front of her.
Oh goodness.
"Am I supposed to arrive at the top?" she asked.
Karasuma-sensei nodded. Then excused himself. He had to go train the others. However, his assistant would stay here and keep an eye on her.
Moe looked up. Oh goodness. Moe turned to the woman with black hair. The one who had informed her about class E's situation. She was standing quietly in a corner. When their eyes met she seemed to understand the girl's shock because attempted to smile a little to her.
Moe looked sadly at the top one last time. Then started climbing. She felt so goofy. Was it right to put the foot on that rock? Should she had moved her hand first? Was her centre of balance in the right place? She looked down. She wasn't even halfway, but the height was still quite much. A net was under her to prevent injuries, but still...
"How are you doing?" a happy voice asked at her ear. Moe shouted and lost her grip. A moment later she was bouncing in the net.
"Are you insane?!" she whispered out of breath.
"P.E. is not your favourite subject, I see" Korosensei said as if nothing had happened.
"P.E. is okay. Normal P.E. Climbing a mountain is not" She replied.
"But you must learn it. Your classmates were able to do so in the first term and it was quite useful to them during their infiltration in Okinawa"
"An infiltration?" Moe asked.
The teacher nodded and told her about their summer little adventure as he called it.
Moe stayed silent. Dangerous. They could have died. The octopus kept smiling at her as if he was giving her a normal lesson. Or telling a joke.
She climbed down the net.
The octopus tried to stop her. Where was she going? To the classroom That training was pointless.
"It's pointless- the girl said -simply because I am not going to take part in this assassination. It's plain stupid. I don't wanna risk my life, I don't need any money and the odds of me succeeding are near to zero per cent. So, no thank you. I'm going to take your lesson as a normal student, but I will not become an assassin. That's a my right" and she kept walking away to the classroom. When she arrived she opened the slide door and slammed it behind her.
Of course Korosensei was already waiting for her. Sitting behind his desk.
"I see- he simply said - Then will try to rise your marks. However, if you change your mind, I'll help you with your training. remember that".
Moe grunted. then sat down and took her notebook.
That was incredible. They were saying. Karasuma-sensei was able to cover that distance in just ten seconds. They were saying. Were they really going to learn free-running? They were saying. Were they going to be as cool as those people on the internet? They were saying.
Moe stood up grabbing a black bag and walked away from her desk. That chit-chat wasn't good for her in that moment.
She went in the faculty room. There was no one in there. Perfect. And an old cooker was waiting just for her together with some pots. Sweet.
She opened the bag. Many kinds of tea were in there all put in nice little sacks. Near to them there was a white teapot rolled up in some cloth. She took it and put some water she had brought with her from home to boil.
"What are you doing?" a voice asked.
She turned. Nagisa was looking at her from the door.
"I'm preparing some tea. Do you want it?" she said.
The boy nodded, then entered the room.
"How was your training?" he asked.
"Fine" she lied.
They stayed silent.
Moe took some hot water out of the pot and put it in the teapot. Then she left the rest of it boiling on the fire. That was so that the teapot would stay warm.
"Are you enjoying classes?" Nagisa tried again.
Moe nodded. "And you?" the girl added looking the blue-haired boy in the eyes.
Nagisa smiled: "Yes. I love our assassination classroom".
The girl's eyes narrowed. Then she looked in a particular point over the boy's shoulder where the snake was watching her. It seemed very relaxed. If that was the right adjective to use for a snake.
Moe took the water she had put on the teapot out and put some black tea in it. Two spoons for two cups. Then she added the hot water from the pot. Now they had to wait some minutes.
Maybe that boy could help her to understand.
"Why do you enjoy this situation so much?- she asked- I mean. I like the lessons of that octopus too. And I had fun with the rest of you yesterday, but killing someone is a bit too much, don't you think? Even if it's that octopus"
Nagisa didn't answer immediately. She started to pour the tea in the cups using a strainer. She offered the boy one cup.
"Thanks- he said- I really wanna kill him. Not because I hate him. You see, when the year started I, together with the others, felt as if my life didn't have any meaning. Then he came and gave us a great mission to accomplish. At the beginning I didn't realize it, but I guess I am very proud to have such an important work to do. And he encourages us all the time. He tells us not to give up. It's strange, but having a grown-up supporting me really makes me want to complete the challenge he has given us" he drank some tea. "It's delicious" he said.
"I don't get it" Moe whispered. She really did not get it.
"It's difficult to explain- Nagisa said while touching his cheek with a finger -I guess all you have to do is to try and fit in the assassination classroom style to do things" He smiled at her.
Try to fit in, uh? He was telling her to follow the mass, basically.
"I've already told you- Korosensei said with wavering eyes- But I am so happy you came to me for help" he cried.
She was not so happy.
"And in P.E. too- he continued- Nobody comes to me for P.E."
Really. No surprises there.
Moe wanted to lash out some snarky comments, but she just didn't have the strength. It was almost 1 a.m. and the girl was wondering if she was going to ever see the sunlight again.
She had spent all the afternoon after school, the evening and a good part of the night moving around the mountains with Korosensei. And she had discovered an interesting fact. He was a sadistic bastard sergeant. He had made her run around all the perimeter of the mountain. Climb trees. Making push-ups. Jumping. Almost crying out blood. And all while competing with her in every exercise. And- surprise surprise- winning every time.
"Come on Makimura-san! You are almost there" He was saying as the girl arrived in front of the classroom door "Aaand you've finished your first day of the 20-mach speed training programme! How do you feel?"
"I don't feel" she said.
"Great, then this means you're not in pain and that for itself is good" Korosensei commented.
Moe started wondering that killing him wasn't such a bad idea, after all.
"Still I'm happy you decided to take your training more seriously, does it mean you are going to come at me together with your classmates?" he asked.
"No- Moe answered- I'm still not sure if I wanna be part of this. It's dangerous and I don't hate you, so I don't feel any will to kill you even if with some other training sessions like this I may reconsider this statement. After knowing you I don't even know if you really want to destroy the earth or why, so I don't feel really motivated. And by the way the fact that I can feel again means my arms and legs are hurting a lot so you will have to carry me home" she said while touching her thighs.
"But.." Korosensei said while looking at her with the two black points which were his eyes.
"But I wanna know. I wanna know why my classmates want to kill you so much. I want to understand and to try to be part of this class. For real" She said.
The octopus's face turned bright red with a giant circle on it. It seemed that for now her objective was a full mark.
"Ok. It's you against me stupid wall"
Her classmates were playing a tag game with Koroensei and Karasuma-sensei. She could hear their laughs and voices and...screams of terror coming from some place nearby. Really what kind of game was that? However, Moe had her own personal fight to win that day.
She started climbing. Her movements had become a lot more fluid. Where to put hands and feet came naturally to her. Little step after little step. She felt like the character of Mulan climbing the pole in order to give the arrow back to her captain. That was one of the films she had watched during her period as a prisoner in her own home. The day she watched it she was particularly depressed. Luckily there were better days with better films as well. Still, that was not the point in that moment. The point was she wanted to arrive at the top. She was going to reach the top. Not to kill Korosensei. For herself. To become a true member of that crazy class. And also because she wanted to avoid another one of those training sessions.
Just five meters. Three. Two. And she was able to raise herself up. She was looking at the world from the top of that stupid wall. Under her there were trees and some birds flying around. Farer away she could see the city of Kunogigaoka with its houses and shops, its trains and people moving around.
Wow. She was able to clear the challenge. Nagisa talked about proving oneself and wanting to win, right? Perhaps she was starting to understand it. Just a little bit.
