I wrote this a while ago, when I was super serious about writing something every day. It doesn't have any context, though I guess if everyone wants I could expand. It's just a little piece on my take on Hiccup's relationship with Astrid. This takes place when their around eighteen or nineteen. I wrote this before Riders of Berk came out, so it doesn't necessarily fit into the show. I hope you enjoy it.
Hiccup sat down on a rock. It was the first time he had sat still in hours. Or maybe days. Did laying in bed at night count if he tossed and turned the whole time? Hiccup didn't think so. He stared out at the waves smashing against the rocks at the bottom of the cliff. Try as he might, he couldn't make them look any different than they had yesterday. Or the day before that or the day before that...
He sighed. Why did the world keep going on as if nothing had happened? As if Astrid was sitting beside Hiccup, or as if she was inside her house or in the great hall. Hiccup whispered into the wind. Three days. She had been gone for three days. Why?
Hiccup stood up and started pacing; he couldn't stand sitting still any longer. He needed her to be safe. He needed her to be here. He needed her to be here now! He sat down on the rock again and looked back out over the ocean. He pushed his hand up through his hair. She was out there somewhere. Stormfly was with her. They were fine. Unless she wasn't back because something happened...
Hiccup stood up. He started pacing around the rock and put his hands to his head, He sat down on the rock again and put his head in his hands. The world might continue to go on, but he couldn't. He wished he had talked to her before she left. He had almost done it. But the time had seemed wrong. When he did tell her, he wanted it to be just him and her, no one else. When she had left, Snotlout, Fishlegs, Ruffnut, Tuffnut, they had all been there. He didn't want to do it in front of everyone. He felt like if he told her in front of everyone, it would seem like he was doing it as a show; to make an impression on the tribe; to take up the duty of chief. He sighed. He wanted Astrid to be able to tell that he really meant it. He didn't want to marry her because he was going to be chief and in some way it was his duty to do so. He wanted to marry her because he loved her.
He reached into the pouch on his belt and pulled out the necklace he had made her. It took him a long time to make it. He wanted it to mean something to her, but he also wanted it to show that it was from him. He rubbed his thumb on the piece hanging from the string, a beautiful blue stone that looked just like Astrid's eyes when she smiled. Around the stone was a gear he had crafted out gold; that part was the hardest. He smiled and felt his eyes begin to tear up. He had made the necklace so that Astrid would be able to see what he saw when he looked at her. The blue stone and the polished gold held a piece of Hiccup's reflection. He slipped it back in the pouch and shut his eyes tight, "Just give me a chance to give it to her," he whispered.
So, I had Hiccup make the necklace because I wanted him to have something he had planned on giving Astrid, and obviously Vikings didn't give each other rings when the got engaged. Also, I'm not sure if Hiccup would actually have to ask Astird. I'm pretty sure he could just ask her dad if he could marry her. If her dad said yes, they would get married. But I felt like Hiccup would want to ask her, whether he had to or not. He would want to make sure that she wanted to marry him. Anyway, please review and tell me what you think. I would love to hear your opinion (especially if you think this should have gone differently). And, please please please give me some constructive criticism. I love it when I get reviews that help me write better. Thanks for reading.
