Chapter 7 – Embarrassed To Say This is My First Date

It was a beautiful morning in Magnolia, and people filled the streets of the city. Many were out enjoying the day but Lucy couldn't say she was enjoying it just yet.

She leaned against the wall of the station; though she was careful not to stain her cute outfit. Her hands tightened around the strap of her purse as her eyes reflected the nervousness she was feeling.

'Where is he?'

Her idiot of a classmate Gray had asked her on a date, and then had the nerve to be ten mins late?

Unbelievable.

Her mind drifted to the date it happened; though she still can't believe it actually occurred.

"Please!" The black haired student begged, his hands clenching onto her shoulders as he continued to plead. "I promise I'll tell you everything later but for the time being, just say yes! I'll do anything!"

Never once in her life did she expect one of the coolest guys in the school to be panicking, and groveling right in front of her. It was truly a frightening site.

"Okay! Okay!" Lucy agreed. "I'll do it!"

She was still confused about his invitation, especially since he told her she wasn't allowed to share this with anyone. Plus he's never expressed any romantic interest towards her, and she would definitely know if a guy was into her.

'This better be good.'

"Yo Lucy!"

The blonde turned her head to the male who called her, and screamed when she saw Gray walking towards her in only his boxes.

"Put some clothes on you pervert!"

It took a few minutes but they found Gray's garments scattered across the street. The number five ranked student got dressed before heading to an American style restaurant. The place was lively enough with waiters dashing down the rows of tables, and families engaging with one another. The two teens were lucky to get a table by the window, and have their lunches brought out in a matter of minutes.

"So are you finally going to tell me what's going on?" Lucy asked as she munched on a fry.

The boy winced; he placed his burger down and looked directly at her.

"I guess I do owe you an explanation." Gray sighed. "It started with my step-mom. She's a calm and very warm person. Normally she asks about my day, and then leaves me alone after telling her it was fine. This time was different however.

"For whatever reason, she insisted that I date one of Ultear's friends. Kept going on and on that she was a cute girl and I should totally ask her out on a date."

"That's ridiculous mom. I don't want to see Gray go out with her. It would be disgusting." Ultear sneered. Gray glared at his older sister while Lyon laughed from his seat in the living room. Ur smirked as she continued preparing their dinner from the kitchen.

"But can't you tell Meredy likes him? That girl can't take her eyes off of him when she's here."

Ultear's eyes weren't the only ones that widened from that remark.

"That's not-"

"Never hurt her, or else." And that was a promise, based on Ultear's murderous expression.

"I'm not going to date her!" Gray yelled.

"Why not? It's not like you have a girlfriend." Lyon commented.

"And that's where it all went downhill."

"I-I do!" The black haired male stated. His step-family gave him the same disbelieving look, one that he would have found offensive if he wasn't lying at the moment.

"Yeah right! Since when?"

Gray scratched the back of his head. "Just recently…"

"Then why haven't you mentioned her?" Ur inquired.

"She…she didn't want to make it a big deal."

Ultear snorted. "What's the big deal? It's not like you're dating Lucy Heartfilia or someone like that."

"You didn't." She narrowed her gaze, and Gray gulped. But there was nothing he could do now.

"I did. And now my family thinks we're dating and they want to meet you."

"Gray!" Lucy exclaimed; her voice drew in attention from other customers but she paid no mind to them. "How could you use me like that?"

"I'm sorry! I promise I'll make it up to you!"

She leaned back against her seat; her lips formed a small pout. "Why didn't you say you were dating Juvia? She would have agreed in a heartbeat!"

"One, I don't like her." Lucy snorted in disbelief but Gray ignored her. "And second, I panicked. Ultear gave me a good excuse and I went with it."

"Fine. I'll help you this one time! But I am not lying to your family ever again. Got it?"

"Promise." A genuine smile spread across his lips.

The two continued their meal with small talk about their classes, and what they do in spare time. Gray wasn't surprised to hear that Lucy spent a lot of time studying outside of class, pushing her limits so she could beat Natsu one day.

This was when the boy decided to tease her. "Talking about another guy during our date Lucy? Are you trying to make me jealous?"

He was definitely amused by the bright hue on her face. "What? No! You know Natsu and I aren't like that! We're rivals!"

"Come on! I get that he's a moron but would it really be that bad to date him?"

Lucy's face continued to glow bright red. "That's-that's just not us! We're rivals! Plus he doesn't like me in that way! I'm pretty sure I would know."

He merely rolled his eyes; she was so oblivious he was actually pitying Natsu.

"Well! What about you and Juvia huh?" She huffed, desperately wanting to change the subject and seeing his shocked expression meant she was succeeding. "What's so bad about dating Juvia?"

"Juvia and I would never last long." He shrugged. "She's too emotional and I would rather not deal with girls who are that unstable."

"But her intentions are pure!" The blonde countered; Gray merely raised an eyebrow. "Sure I don't know her well and she can be scary at times but she's never actually done anything to harm someone."

And Lucy was right. Juvia came across as scary and while her glares freaked many people out, that was the worse she had ever done. Calling her a "Love rival" isn't even offensive. Surely Gray saw that Juvia was secretly a cinnamon roll on the instead.

"We'll see." That comment meant their discussion was over, and Lucy wasn't going to press him on the subject, especially when he might change it back on her and bring up Natsu again.

The two finished their meals in silence; lost in their own thoughts. Once they left the restaurant, Gray wrapped his hand around hers.

That instantly caused the girl to gasp, and start stuttering. "W-what do you think you're doing?"

"Relax. I figured we might as well look the part since you're already helping me." He winked, and before the blonde could yell at him, he spoke again. "Besides, I'm guessing this is your first time on a date?"

She quickly grew embarrassed. "How did-"

"If you had, holding hands wouldn't be a big deal."

Lucy realized she couldn't argue with that logic. After all, she had never been on a date, so how could she say that holding hands was drastic? Hand holding was probably one of the tamest things couples did.

"Fine. But if you lean in for a kiss, I'll kick you so hard you won't be able to walk for a week."

"Geez, do girls always resort to violence?"

They teased one another for about a minute before they fell into a comfortable silence.

Lucy stared at his hand, surprised by how cold it was. She always thought a man's hand was supposed to be warm, and she wasn't sure why.

'Maybe because it's always Natsu dragging you around…' Her mind whispered softly.

She tried to recall if she ever held hands with another boy, and realized that most of her physical encounters with the opposite sex were done with Natsu. He was always tugging her wrist, hauling her over his shoulder, or sliding his arm around her. It was always Natsu.

And holding Gray's cold hand made her realize that she preferred Natsu's warm touch.

"Would it really be that bad to date him?"

She clenched her teeth. Yes, yes it would, she thought. They were rivals; you don't date rivals even if they are your friends. It would be too weird.

At least that's what she told herself.

"Come on," Gray tugged on her hand, snapping breaking her train of stop. "We have a few hours left; let's walk around and I can show you how dates are supposed to be."

"Sure." The girl rolled her eyes but followed him anyways.

Surprisingly, Lucy learned that Gray knew what he was talking. He recommended a few fun places in Magnolia that would be good on a first date, such as a restaurant or an arcade. He told her to never go to a theater if it's the first time she's meeting the guy, and always stay in a public area.

No guy should ever be late (something she teased him for when he told her that), guys should always offer to pay for the first date, even if you insist paying for yourself. If the guy is trying to do math and meet you somewhere half-way, don't even bother with him. The most important thing he told was for her to relax on a date, and take it slow.

She appreciated the advice, and was glad Gray was trying to look after her when she went a real date.

However, at this point in time, she wished he would look after her by breaking this awkward silence between them and his family.

She and Gray were seated on one side of the living room, while the rest of his family sat across from them. Ultear and Lyon eyed them suspiciously, appearing like they didn't believe she was real. Occasionally they would whisper to each other, their eyes always locked on her. On the other hand, Gray's step-mother looked more amused than anything.

Lucy bit her lip, and started smoothing the wrinkles she had on her skirt while the room remained silent.

"Okay, spill it." Ultear spoke. "How is Gray blackmailing you?"

"Excuse me?"

"I didn't!"

Both S-class students shouted different responses but that didn't stop the older girl from asking questions.

"So how did Gray ask you out?"

"Um, he asked me in the Guild?" Lucy responded with a bit of uncertainty. Technically she wasn't lying.

"I don't believe it." Lyon stated.

"She's here now, isn't she?" Gray countered with his arms crossed.

"Now, now." Ur chimed, smiling as she ignored her children's arguments. "If they say they're dating, then let's take their word for it."

The two Fairy Tail Academy students internally sighed in relief.

"But mom-" Ultear started before she was cut off by her mother.

"You two are very much in love right?" The woman's smile widened. Gray gulped. He knew that wasn't good.

"Ah-"

"Yes mam!" Lucy stated, catching the rest of the teens off guard. Gray was surprised to hear her voice sounding strong.

"And you'll do anything for one another?" Ur pressed.

"Of course!"

"Even kiss him, to prove you're dating?"

The blonde instantly closed her mouth while Gray's face started to burn.

"Ur-"

"If that's what it takes." The black haired boy sharply turned his head to his classmate, a large expression of disbelief rested on his face.

"Huh?!"

Lucy ignored their audience, and turned her body towards him; her hands rested on his shoulders, and she leaned in about an inch away from his face.

"You're a good friend so I'm doing this to help you." She whispered. "But next time, don't lie to your family."

She closed her eyes tightly, and leaned forward. She may have sounded confident but her heart was pounding furiously. This was her first kiss, and deep down she had wanted it to be special; she didn't want it to be shared with a friend to help him out.

Before her lips touched his, she left the palm of his cold hand push her back.

"You dork. Don't you know kissing isn't something you do on the first date?"

Her brown orbs stared at him; her lips parted and it was clear to everyone in the room that she was confused.

Gray groaned before turning to his family. "The truth is Lucy is just a friend, and I asked her to help me so I wouldn't be forced to date Melody. I'm sorry I lied."

"Well it's obvious you two weren't together." Lyon drawled out before he was elbowed by his older step sister.

"Gray, we were just teasing you. We would never force you to date someone you weren't interested in. That's not how families work." Ur smiled at her son as the S.A. student blushed lightly.

Lucy grinned, glad to see her friend and his family fix the miscommunication between them. Maybe next time Gray could bring home a girl he was actually dating.

Before anymore could be said, the door bell rang. After a second, it rang again and again. Everyone in the room wore the same expression of confusion, minus the older woman who looked like she was in for a good show.

"Right on time!" Gray's step mother smirked. "Ultear, could you please answer that?"

"You were expecting someone?" Her daughter asked as she walked to the front door.

"Yes, I stopped by the station this morning to talk to an old friend. When I mentioned who Gray was bringing over today, his son overheard and wanted to come over after he was done with his shift. It seems he's in the same class as you."

"But we don't know anyone else who works in the police department." Lucy pointed out just a second before Gray groaned. "Wait, you meant the fire department, didn't you?"

Ur's wild grin only grew. Ultear opened the front door and revealed not one, but two of their classmates.

Natsu looked like he was about to burst into flames while Juvia looked like she was ready to flood the room with tears.

"Gray-sama! Why have you chosen love rival over Juvia? Is it because she is not blonde?" Juvia cried as she entered the room.

"Calm down Juvia. I swear it's not what you think!" Lucy stood up from her seat as she tried to ease the other girl. She had no idea why Natsu would be so upset but she knew what Juvia's problem was; hopefully the girl would listen to reason.

"Calm Down? Do not tell Juvia to calm down love-rival!" The blunette yelled as Lucy mentally slapped herself for saying that.

"Icy bastard, fight me!" Natsu shouted as he stomped towards their area.

"Wait up flame brain! It's like Lucy said! It's not what you think!" Gray shouted back, using his hands to signal him to calm down.

Ultear groaned as she felt an oncoming headache. Ur merely laughed at the chaos around her. Lyon, who had been surprisingly quiet, stood up from his seat and approached Gray's female friends.

"Excuse me, Juvia was it?" The white haired male inquired as he stopped in front of her.

"Yes, why do you ask?" Juvia blinked, her anger seeming forgotten as she turned to him.

"You are the most beautiful woman I have ever encountered! Please, forget Gray and allow me to take you on a date." Lyon stated as he took her hand and went on one knee.

Juvia blushed heavily while you could hear Gray scream "What" in the background.

"Juvia, don't listen to this guy! There's no way you should date a guy you just met!" Gray advised as he stood between his brother and classmate.

"Gray-sama!" The blue haired girl's eyes turned into hearts, which only upset Lyon.

"Stay out of this Gray!"

"Make me!"

As the two brothers argued, Juvia swayed back and back, rambling that Gray truly cared about Juvia.

Lucy knew she was going to tease him when they returned to school. 'So he is interested after all...'

Before she could say anything she felt herself falling backwards and landed in someone's arms. When she looked up, she realized she was being carried like a bride by her rival.

Her body turned red as she demanded he put her down. He ignored her.

"We're leaving." Natsu announced before he sprinted out of the home. Lucy wrapped her arms around the teen's neck as he ran. He was incredibly fast, and sometimes she wondered if he raced cars in his spare time.

A few minutes passed and she knew they were pretty far away the moment she saw they were now in a park.

"Natsu stop!" The blonde screamed as she elbowed his cheek.

Instantly he stopped running, and Lucy jumped out of his arms. Thankfully there was only one other couple in the area otherwise they would have attracted much unwanted attention.

Natsu held his bruising check as he glared at the girl. "What the hell!"

"You can't just kidnap people out of homes Natsu! What were you thinking?"

The pink haired student dropped his hand, and stood in front of her. She gulped as she stared into his intense gaze, not exactly knowing what to do in this situation. Especially since she didn't even know what the issue was to begin with.

"Did you really go on a date with Gray?"

Her eyes widened, and she was about to report that it was none of his business when she locked eyes with him once again.

For some reason this was important to him, and she felt if she responded in that tone it would upset him.

So she decided to be honest.

"Yes but not for the reason you and Juvia seem to think. We're not dating; he just needed some help."

It was the truth, and Natsu seemed to believe her. His serious expression morphed into one that was more laid back. He laced his fingers behind his head and grinned brightly.

"That's great! I was thinking that snow cone brainwashed you or something."

Lucy huffed. "Well he didn't."

"That's good and all, but you know that's not fair right?"

The blonde blinked in confusion. "What isn't?"

With his fingers still laced, the boy leaned forward and flashed her a bright smile.

"That you and I haven't gone on a date."

She lightly gasped and she felt her face warm up at his words. Her heartbeat went wild as she continued to stare at her classmate's handsome face.

'H-handsome?' Her mind screamed. 'Since when do I think Natsu is handsome?'

"W-What are you-"

"I'm thinking next Sunday. Pick me up around 11?"

"Why do I have to pick you up?" The blond exclaimed. Her eyes widened when she realized she accidentally agreed to his offer.

Natsu laughed. "Cause it's modern times Lucy! Stop by my place and I'll show you all the best spots in town. I'll take you out on a way better date than frost bite ever could!"

He spun around and started to walk in the direction of the park's exit. "Come on. We can talk about it on the way to your house."

"I-Idiot. I never actually said yes!"

"Too late now Luce! It's a date!"

As he continued to grin so brightly, Lucy's heartbeat only continued to race. She lowered her head as she walked towards Natsu; she didn't want him to see her blushing face. At the moment, her mind was only wondering one single thing.

'Why is my heart beating this way?'

I'm not sure when the next chapter will be updated. It's hard staying motivated at times, especially since work can be very stressful and often leaves me depressed. But I'll try to get the next one out sooner, especially since the next chapters are going to start focusing on Natsu and Lucy's relationship. It's been awhile since I read Special A so I might be wrong but I realized that Special A never really made it clear where Hikari starts to fall for Kei. It just happens and in my story, I want to explore more how Lucy will fall for Natsu and what keeps Natsu in love with Lucy. Hopefully I can do that.

Thank you again for your continued support. It truly means a lot to me. I hope to hear your opinions on this chapter as well.

Take care and stay safe.

Your friend,

Dark Shining Light
