A Birthday for Beginnings
Akashi closed his eyes and leaned back against the wooden bench, letting the cold winter breeze brush past him as he listened to the faint noise of the nearby traffic. He could have gone straight home from school and warmed himself up but he chose to linger around in the park nearby.
It was his birthday that day but to him, it was just a regular day. Birthdays had long lost their meaning to him, seeing that they only served as a reminder that he had grown older by another year. His family had stopped celebrating since his mother's passing and the only ones who had celebrated and threw him a party during his middle school days were the Generation of Miracles but that was all in the past.
Just as Akashi adjusted the scarf around his neck, he felt a pair of warm hands against his cheeks, startling him and heterochromatic eyes immediately snapped open.
"Happy birthday Akashi-kun," Kuroko muttered with a sheepish smile. "I hope you weren't intending to stay out in the cold too long."
Akashi was greeted with the sight of cerulean-blue eyes staring down at him, accompanied by rosy cheeks from staying out in such low temperatures - not that he himself was any better. He was surprised to say the least to see Kuroko, considering how far apart their cities were. "Aren't you a little far from home, Tetsuya?" The hands that were still cupping his face were comfortable and warm to the touch and he made no effort to push them away.
Kuroko huffed as he leaned closer to the red-head's face, their breaths mingling. "Is that the thanks I get for coming all the way to Kyoto? And I was hoping you would put me up for the night since it's the holidays."
Pulling away from the warmth, Akashi swiftly stood up, brushing the snow that had accumulated off his coat. "You never fail to surprise m-"
Kuroko lurched forward, arms wrapped tightly round Akashi's neck as he pressed his lips against the other, feeling cold chapped lips against his own. Time seemed to stop for them as they stood there without a care, locked in an embrace that Akashi had not experienced in a long time.
"Happy birthday, Akashi-kun…" Kuroko reiterated with flushed cheeks as his hand hesitantly reached out to grasp Akashi's own gloved hand. "I love you."
Tightening his hold, Akashi brought Kuroko's hand to his lips and pressed a gentle kiss on the back. "Thank you… And… I love you too."
Birthdays may not have held any meaning to him but now, he finally had something to look forward to.
