One evening, Hermione had done all her homework and was bored out of her mind. And she noticed something fishy and suspicious about Draco Malfoy all throughout the year in their 6th year, her and her friends' arch-nemesis, he mostly ignored them and was less nasty to them than the previous years. He was even at times, coldly civil to them. He still of course, called Hermione a Mudblood on occasions, but she noticed there wasn't so much venom or spite in his voice anymore. What was wrong with him? She thought and wanted to find out why he was behaving in an unusual way.

So that lucky evening, after she's done everyone of her assignments, she wandered around School and accidentally, saw Draco Malfoy, doing the same thing as her. Where was he going like that? She decided to follow him around and to her surprise, he went in the guys' bathroom. She knew she couldn't go in there as she was a girl, but she did anyway. She hid herself behind a big toilet.

From her hideout, she overheard him talking to himself. How shocked she was to hear him talk about her! She was of course, very interested in knowing what he really thought of her, so she couldn't resist listening in his private conversation with himself. He said:

"Hermione, you know, I never really hated Muggle-Borns and Muggles, and I never really wanted to kill them either. I am not a murderer. But I am born a Malfoy, a Pureblood and a Slytherin, so it's what I have to do. And He would murder my whole family if I didn't carry out His insane orders, so I can't really help your side without risking my neck and my parents', at least, not openly. But I really did every I could for the Light side, in secret." As he was confessing this, tears trailed from his eyes to his cheeks, and to his neck and in the toilet.

Hermione saw them and heard them. She sympathized with and pitied him now. She let out an astonished gasp; he heard it. Although he didn't know where or who she was, he used Wingardium Leviosa, to make her come to him. He questioned her:

"You! So you've been spying on me, eh? How much have you heard, Mudblood?"

Still in the air, Hermione answered him:

"I swear, nothing, let me down!"

"I'm not letting you go until you tell me how much you've heard."

"I just heard you say you didn't want to kill Muggle-Borns and Muggles, nothing more. I swear on Gryffindor's honour, please don't kill me!"

"That's all? What about the part about me helping the Light because of you and for you?"

"Yes, I've heard that too."

"Are you satisfied now then? To see me so helpless and weak because of you? Are you going to gloat over me crying over you, are you there to humiliate me some more?"

Hermione shook her head and answered honestly:

"No, I did not come here to gloat over you nor to humiliate you. I just followed you there to find out why you're less haughty and annoying to us this year."

"Oh Hermione, you don't know how much I've been wanting and hoping to talk to you and to let you know that I don't hate Muggle-borns! Do you truly hate me like Potter and Weasley do?" asked Draco, that was what he wished to know the most from Granger. Since she was there and knew his secret, he might as well ask her the question straightforwardly, there was no point in beating around the bushes.

"Err...I guess… I don't… really… But this must stay between us."

"Yes." From that evening on, Hermione and Draco gradually became friends. And the rest of the year, she became his confidante, the sole person in the whole School who knew the real him behind his Pure-blood and icy mask and to whom his heart really belonged to.
