It was a strange thing having a feeling in your head. It wasn't an emotion, which he was very familiar with. No, it almost felt like an external sensation at the edge of his skull, probing, humming, constantly there.
Ever since he had entered this building, Gohan could feel he was changing. The power within him was growing, expanding, evolving. He was not the same man that had entered this place. That after-image trick he had learned from Hurricane had only been the starting point.
He wasn't even sure how he was doing this latest trick. It was like he had expanded his awareness, the same one that alerted him to impending danger and threats. While that was usually within his vicinity, assisting him in his fights, he just knew that sense was stronger now. That presence he was feeling, it wasn't because of some guard hiding around a corner. It was the boss of this place, Syron's equivalent of Frieza.
And he was getting closer to it.
As he stormed down the hallway, a guard came flying around the corner of an intersecting hallway. The man only looked at Gohan before he rushed at him, yelling a war cry. Gohan held his ground, allowing his attacker to close the distance between them.
And then he slid to one side, the guard racing right be him. Spinning around, Gohan saw the man skidding to a stop perhaps a couple feet away. Leaping into action, Gohan jumped towards the wall, one foot pressing down on it before he sprung off of it, allowing him to angle his body at his foe. A fist drawn back, he threw it just in time to ram it into the guard's face as he turned around to look at him. The force of the blow sent the guard flying right into the opposite wall, cracks forming all over the sheetrock at the site of impact.
As Gohan touched back down on the floor, roughly the same time as the guard's unconscious body collapsed, he felt a presence closing in on him from behind. Spinning around, he raised an arm up just in time to block another guard as he swung a baton at him. His forearm collided with the man's own forearm, stopping the swing.
Immediately, the dark-haired youth shot his other hand out, grabbing onto the guard's collar. Continuing to twist himself around, Gohan angled his body until his back was to the guard, then pulled on the man as hard as he could. Using his own body as leverage, he hauled the man over his shoulder, leaning forward as he felt his opponent roll over his entire back. Forcing him downward, Gohan slammed the guard face first into the floor, the man's legs sticking straight up into the air before he collapsed into a heap.
Gohan turned away from the two unconscious men, resuming his trek down the hallway. He walked until he was forced to make a left turn, then a right shortly after. After that, he found himself in yet another hallway, but this one had several doors at even intervals.
Walking along, he soon slowed his pace until he came to a complete stop in front of one of the doors. Facing it, Gohan could feel that presence on the other side, beckoning him.
Far be it for him not to answer the siren's call.
Opening the door, he shoved it open and stepped into an office. Seated in a chair on the other side of a large desk was a purple-skinned man, two horns jutting out from his head. Already, Gohan could sense this man wasn't like the ones he had encountered before. There was a seriousness in his stern face, his red eyes boring holes into the young man.
A black dress shirt was his own visible dress, though the youth highly expected this man wasn't sitting around in his underwear. He had his hands clasped together, hovering in front of his mouth as his nose peaked over his knuckles. "You must be Dormant," the man greeted him.
Gohan didn't reply taking another step towards the man.
"Or should I say, Son Gohan?"
That caused him to stop. It had been a long time since anyone had called him that. He had been so immersed in the shadowy assassin world, he had almost forgotten what it was like to be called by his real name, Videl notwithstanding.
"You know, I never thought the most wanted man in the world was one of my employees," the purple-skinned man spoke nonchalantly. "I suppose that name you use is a clue as to why. Had I known, I might have offered you a much better job."
"You're the man that signed my paychecks, I take it," Gohan responded at last.
"No, that was Deborah in accounting. There's not a single thing I've signed that you would've seen."
"Then what do you call yourself?"
A small smile appeared on the man's face. "You can call me Ginyu."
"Not Agent Ginyu?"
"Oh, I have a code name, though I haven't used it in a long time. I haven't had to since I took over this agency. I literally sit at the pinnacle of what an assassin can become."
"Instead of killing people, you just assign their killers. I fail to see a difference."
Whatever good mood this Ginyu was in, it vanished with the frown that overtook his smirk. "If you think I've lost my taste for violence sitting behind this desk, I assure you you're mistaken."
"Never doubted that. Your appetites have just changed is all." Gohan raised a hand up, pointing it right at Ginyu. He could feel his palm warming up as he focused his energies into it, a glow beginning to form. "Regardless, I don't care. I'm taking you down."
Interesting enough, Ginyu didn't react to the manifestation of his ki. He lazily gazed at it before his eyes sharpened upon the youth's eyes. "Just like Frieza's group," he remarked before he dropped his hands to his desk. He pressed his palms upon the wooden surface and pushed himself up, shoving his chair back with the back of his legs. As he stood, he casually began to unbutton the cuffs of his long-sleeve shirt, rolling them up to reveal defined forearms.
Walking around the desk, he soon stood next to it, finishing with his sleeves as he did so. "Now, are you going to use that ki, or am I going to have to force you?"
Instantly, Gohan fired his blast. Reacting immediately, Ginyu swung his arm up and batted the beam to a side, where it burned into the wall. The very sight of that stunned the youth. Up until now, those beams had burned through whatever they touched. It hadn't occurred to him they could be blocked. Unfortunately, Gohan couldn't dwell on that much longer as Ginyu launched himself forward, the purple-skinned man letting out a war cry as he threw a punch with his other arm.
The dark-haired youth ducked the punch, feeling it sail just above his head. Swinging up an arm, his forearm pressed up against Ginyu's to ensure that it didn't change directions and strike him. Going into his counterattack, Gohan threw an uppercut for Ginyu's chin.
In response, Ginyu twisted to a side, the punch passing by him harmlessly. However, an instant later and the horned man shot his nearest hand up and grabbed Gohan by the wrist. That's when he ducked himself under the youth's extended arm, pressing his shoulder right underneath his armpit. Grabbing onto Gohan's belt, the man hauled him up into the air, pulling down on his arm simultaneously.
The next thing Gohan knew, he was flipping over Ginyu until his back landed hard on the desk. The force of the impact knocked the wind out of him, causing him to gasp. Letting go, Ginyu then jumped up onto a chair, one foot touching down on its seat, which he then sprung up higher into the air. Leaning to a side, he brought up an arm, bending it at the elbow. The moment gravity set in, he dropped right down to the dark-haired man, intending to crush him with a piledriver.
Eyes widening, Gohan rolled to a side and ultimately off of the desk. Just as he fell off the edge, Ginyu landed on the desk, driving his elbow into it, which caused the piece of furniture to snap in half. Caving in on itself, the middle of the desk collapsed to the floor as its ends jutted up into the air, the office supplies on top of it sliding down with Ginyu.
Quickly getting back onto his feet, Gohan laid eyes on his foe as the man pushed himself out of the wreckage of his desk. The world around the youth began to blur as Gohan sped around the room, even as Ginyu turned to look where he had been previously standing. Ending up behind him, Gohan had a fist drawn back, then promptly swing it.
The moment his fist connected with Ginyu's back, it went right through him. A moment later and Ginyu's form became transparent before fading away.
Gohan's eyes widened. The after-image! So Agent Hurricane wasn't the only one that knew that trick. Focusing his senses, he immediately felt a presence appear right behind him.
Alright, so Ginyu was trying to attack him from behind as well. Well, let's see if he liked his own little trick used against him. Instantaneously increasing his speed, he darted forward, leaving an image of himself behind. Twisting to his left, he spun around, just in time to see Ginyu appear out of thin air, throwing a fist that passed right through the young man's after-image. From his position, he could see the horned man's red eyes widen as he realized he had fallen for the same trick.
That's when Gohan rushed in, leaping into the air as he swung a kick. Once again, his leg swung right through an image of Ginyu, the dark-haired youth's own form appearing in midair right where the man's head was. Again, he sped off, leaving yet another image, one that Ginyu attacked half a heartbeat later.
Over and over, each man attacked the other, hitting only an after-image, only to leave one of their own so that their foe repeated the exact same action. Gohan, Ginyu, Gohan, Ginyu, they appeared swinging fists and feet, only to race off so fast the naked eye could not keep up.
It was growing tiresome. As Gohan raced in on the latest Ginyu image, he kept his senses on high alert. Swinging a fist, it passed through the image, just like he expected. However, instead of leaving another image in his wake, Gohan skid to a stop. Immediately, he felt Ginyu's presence, once again behind him.
Spinning around, Gohan raised both of his hands, pressing the back of one hand against the palm of the other. An instant later and Ginyu rammed into him, leading with an elbow that collided right into his hands. Feeling the force run through his arms, he absorbed the blow, even as his feet skidded across the floor. The moment he stopped, Gohan leaned backwards, giving off the impression that his opponent was pushing him back.
Then he flung his head forward, his forehead colliding with Ginyu's. Stars exploded before his eyes as pain exploded through his face, but he fought through the disorientation, never once looking away from his foe. Ginyu, in the meantime, cried out from the blow, stumbling back a step.
Pulling back, Gohan fully extended his arms, holding his hands sideways, mirror images of the other. Gathering his ki, he powered it through his palms. Instead of the familiar golden light, the air in front of his hands distorted, a distortion that rushed forward and slammed right into Ginyu. The force sent the purple-skinned man flying through the air until he crashed into and through the wall.
Marching towards the hole, Gohan entered a hallway. On the opposite side was Ginyu, a spider's web of cracks surrounding him from where he had crashed. He was leaning up against the wall, using it to support himself.
Reaching him, Gohan grabbed the man by his shirt up by his shoulders. Baring his teeth, he yanked Ginyu right off the floor, swinging him through the air as he twisted his body. He slammed the man against the wall just next to the hole, the sheetrock cracking and crumbling from the impact. Turning around, he swung Ginyu again through the air, forcing the man into the previous wall, more cracks forming around him.
Finally, Gohan spun around as he pulled on Ginyu, throwing him down the corridor. The purple-skinned man flew sideways through the air, falling to the floor a long distance away. The moment he hit the tile, he began rolling over and over and until he came to a stop.
Undeterred, the dark-haired youth stormed down the hallway. However, he came up short when he began hearing his foe chuckle.
It was a low, deep, evil thing, one that actually gave him pause. As he lay on the ground, Ginyu slowly began to push himself up, oddly enough with his back towards the youth. "I can see now how Frieza got himself killed," the man grunted, rising up to his feet before turning to face him. "You're powerful, incredibly so. I thought I was strong, but you...you're in a class all of your own."
There was something off about this. The tone, the man's posture. It screamed confidence. After being tossed around, that was the last thing he should be feeling.
"As you know, I wasn't always the head of an agency," Ginyu continued, his body moving. His right arm raised out to his side, stretching as far as he could. With his other hand, he pointed it right at the young man. "I started off an assassin; one of Frieza's to be exact. As you can imagine, he didn't take it too well when I decided to leave. I had to fake my own death and everything just to get away from him."
Alarms were going off in Gohan's head. Everything Ginyu was saying, it was just like his father's plan, only it had succeeded. However, that wasn't the only concerning thing. If Ginyu had worked for Frieza, then that meant…
A purple light began to form in the palm of Ginyu's hand, appearing as a large orb. A moment later and a purple aura, flame-like, enveloped him, crackling as the orb grew larger and larger.
...that meant Ginyu knew how to use his ki in the most destructive way possible.
Letting out a wild laugh, Ginyu then fired his blast.
...
Videl felt the tremor that rocked the building. It was as violent as it was abrupt. One moment she was running down a hallway, the next she was sent flying off her feet. She bashed her shoulder up against a wall, crying out before she collapsed to the floor.
What the hell was that?! was her first thought. It was like an earthquake had rocked the entire city.
However, that was when her brain kicked into gear and she realized what the source of the shaking was. Whenever something unexplainable and frightening happened, Gohan wasn't too far away from its epicenter. He must be fighting someone that was forcing him to cut loose.
That wasn't exactly a good thing.
She had seen Gohan in action before and she knew when he was firmly in control of a fight. Entire buildings didn't shake to their foundation when he was winning. That meant whoever he was fighting now could trade blows with him and ask for more.
Getting to her feet, something else struck the dark-haired woman. The tremor, it hadn't come from in front of her, but from behind. She was going the wrong way.
"Damn it," she growled as she forced herself onto her feet. Turning around, she started limping back the way she came, one of her legs surprisingly stiff. Every step she took, though, it became easier to move, which allowed her to speed up until she was running full out.
"Hold on, Gohan, I'm coming."
...
The rubble shifted as Gohan tenderly pushed himself up. That blast had been more powerful than he had expected. The explosion had sent him flying down the hallway and through a wall. What was left of it was beneath him and was making it slightly harder to push himself up as it moved and crumbled beneath him.
It had been a long time since he had been hit that hard by an energy blast. He wasn't hurt, but he wasn't unhurt. Sore was a good word to describe it. He'd live though.
Getting to his feet, he stumbled a couple steps before he got his balance. Reaching the hole in the wall, he pressed a hand onto the crumbling edge for better support.
That was when a fist swung into view and slammed right into his face. The force of the blow sent him flying backwards over the debris until the youth's back collided with the far wall, a spider's web of cracks stretching out all around.
Gritting his teeth, eyes squeezed shut, Gohan forced his eyelids open as his feet touched back down on the floor. He was just in time to see Ginyu rushing him, another fist drawn back. Holding his ground, Gohan waited until Ginyu threw his fist to jerk his head to a side, his foe's punch smashing into the wall behind him.
Ginyu grunted from the blow, but that didn't stop him from drawing his other fist back and throwing it. Rolling along the wall, Gohan dodged the punch as it hit the wall next to him. Stopping his spinning while facing the wall, he then raised his arm up, holding it at shoulder height with the elbow bent. Reversing his spin, he timed his counterattack perfectly as his elbow rammed right into Ginyu's face. This time his opponent cried out from the blow as he jerked backwards, his hands raising up to cover his face.
Continuing to twist his body around, Gohan had his other arm drawn back, which allowed him to throw a punch the moment he was facing his foe. His fist slammed into the side of Ginyu's head, snapping his head to one side as the rest of his body leaned in the same direction.
As he completed the full extent of his punch, Gohan had drawn his other arm back, his fist hovering next to his hip. Without hesitation, he threw the blow, aiming for the solar plexus.
Only for his fist to pass right through Ginyu's after image once again. Before he could so much as growl his frustration or even attempt to location his foe, two bulky arms suddenly shot around his chest before bending upwards at the elbow. Judging from the purple skin, it had to be Ginyu and he had somehow gotten behind the youth.
The next thing he knew, Ginyu's biceps were pressed up into his armpits, forcing the dark-haired young man's arms to extend outwards, unable to fold them inwards. Due to Ginyu's height being greater, Gohan could feel himself dangling above the floor, the tips of his shoes scraping on the ground.
Gritting his teeth, Gohan tried to flex his arms, pulling them towards his body, but found due to Ginyu's body lock, he wasn't unable to. More worrisome was that he was fueling his ki into his arms to increase his strength and wasn't able to make the man budge.
"I know what you're thinking," Ginyu suddenly spoke from just behind his right ear. "How can this guy be so strong? He's just some executive at the top of the agency's food chain. There's no way he should be able to put up so much resistance."
Freezing, Gohan didn't relax nor did he continue to struggle. Instead he listened. "I'll gladly tell you why the narratives aren't matching up," Ginyu continued. "I was an assassin once, just like you."
"You already mentioned that," the youth retorted, tilting his head to one side side so that he could glare at the man, though he didn't have much success.
"I did, didn't I?" the purple-skinned man responded. "But you probably don't know that I was just your run-of-the-mill assassins. Long-ranged, hand-to-hand combat, I was top notch. I was the best in the biz right up until Frieza discovered ki-users."
There was a slight change in Ginyu's tone at the mention of that. It was deep, practically hidden, but there was still a tinge of disgust in the man's voice, one that spoke to an ancient injury that hadn't quite been forgiven. "The uses of ki, it practically changed the industry overnight. Frieza only wanted those proficient in its use. Anyone that couldn't use it had to figure out how, or were let go. As you can imagine, though, Frieza wasn't big on pink slips."
Which meant Frieza had those agents killed. It was definitely in line with that albino's history if Gohan's father was any indication. However, considering Ginyu was here and well, it stood to reason he had found an exit.
"Fortunately, I was able to get my hands on an experimental serum that allowed me to unlock my ki," he continued. "Though as you can see, there were some side-effects. I don't mind my rugged looks as they are, but once I tasted this power, I knew I couldn't let Frieza bogart the market on them."
So that's what Ginyu meant when he faked his death. It would be the only way he could have left Tactical Securities without Frieza immediately sending an agent to put Ginyu down. Gohan couldn't help but see the similarities to his father's story, though his end wasn't what he originally planned.
"I take it you used this serum on others," Gohan ventured.
"You mean Doom, Magma, and Hurricane. You're right, I did, and they wholeheartedly accepted my offer. Though I imagine you've killed them all by now, so that means I'll have to recruit more." That's when Ginyu's grip tightened on him. "Right after I finish off this little revolution of yours."
The raw power that was being used on the youth's shoulders and arms was astonishing. Immediately Gohan jerked his head around so that he looked forward, his face twisting from pain. He needed to get out of this lock, but obviously trying to overwhelm Ginyu wasn't a viable option if his previous attempt was any indication.
So he needed to improvise. If forcing his way out of the lock wasn't an option, then he needed to do something else. Rotating his arms, Gohan reached upwards until his hands managed to get a hold of the horns extending from Ginyu's head. Making sure he had a good grip, he then jumped off the floor, bringing his legs up until his knees were nearly touching his chest.
Then the young man swung his legs down, leaning forward as much as he could, all the while pulling on Ginyu's head. The moment his feet slapped down on the floor, he was bent over, his foe practically lying on his back as he was lifted off the ground.
Pulling as hard as he could, Gohan found himself rushing headfirst to the ground. However, due to Ginyu's taller height, his skull collided with the floor first, a grunt coming from the man upon impact. They flipped head over feet, Ginyu landing on his back while Gohan ended up on top of his opponent, lying against his chest. Letting go on Ginyu's horns, Gohan dropped his hands lower, but still keeping them above his head. That's when he pressed his fingertips right into either side of his foe's face, and then shoved his thumbs right into the purple-skinned man's eyes.
The reaction was instant. Ginyu let out a pained cry before raising his hands up to his eye sockets. This loosened his hold on the dark-haired youth, which he took advantage of by slipping his arms down and out of the hold. Rolling off of Ginyu, Gohan ended up on his hands and knees, scrambling to get back onto his feet. The moment he did, he drew a leg back and twisted his body to face his foe, swinging his foot half a heartbeat later. The toe of his foot collided with Ginyu's side, right at the curvature of the man's body as it rounded into the back. The force of the blow lifted Ginyu right off the floor, sending him sailing into the wall a moment later. Crashing into it, he then dropped back to the floor.
Despite this, it seemed Ginyu wasn't completely helpless. "You little maggot!" he roared, even as he shoved himself onto his hands and knees. A look of fury was written over his face as he bared his teeth. "What do you hope to accomplish here? You can't beat me!"
"I won't know until I try," Gohan shot back.
"Until you…?" he trailed off before he let out a harsh laugh. "You're kidding yourself. I'm undefeated. I was the best assassin around for years! You're just a hatchling!"
"A hatchling that's torn down three separate agencies," he retorted. "And you're all that's left from making it four."
"What are you? Some bleeding heart who thinks the world's better off without assassin? There will always be assassins! There's always one person that wants another man dead and has the money to make it happen. You won't ever change anything."
Gohan scowled. "I don't care about changing anything. I just wanted to be left alone, but your agencies just wouldn't let me walk away. If I'm going to survive, I have to tear all of you down. If I have to extend that campaign to the financers, then so be it."
That gave Ginyu pause. "You're telling me you just wanted to walk away? You have to be kidding me." Then his eyes narrowed. "No, you're not. That's why you took down Frieza, isn't it? And then that women's agency. Then Gero. In fact, you've been picking up your pace ever since that second one." He snorted. "Those fools."
"Yeah, those fools," he agreed.
"There's just one problem, unfortunately for you. Ya see, we're just the tools. The people you should have been going after are our customers-and the biggest one of all is the government. That's where most of our business comes from and believe me, it's a lot."
Was that so? Then it seemed he still had his work cut out for him. For now though, Ginyu was his latest obstacle and one he was going to cut down rather quickly.
"That just means I still have work to do," Gohan said.
Ginyu blinked his eyes, clearly having some trouble with what he just heard. "Are...are you saying you'll be going after the gov next? You must be crazy! No one can take them down!"
"They haven't faced someone like me."
Immediately, the room blurred around Gohan as he sped forward. He had a fist drawn back the moment he took his first step, threw it when he took his second, and connected with it on the third. The force of the blow knocked the man back into the wall, causing more cracks to form from the impact, adding to the previous set from Ginyu's first crash.
Pulling his arm across his body, Gohan then swung it back, delivering a backhanded blow the nailed Ginyu against his check, causing his head to snap to a side. Followed shortly after the backhand, Gohan swung a foot up, hitting the purple-skinned man against the back of his knee, causing it to buckle.
Letting out a cry, Ginyu dropped to one knee, his profile to the youth. Gathering his ki, Gohan then extended his glowing hand, holding it right behind his foe's head.
Ginyu's body twitched. Clearly he was responding to the combo the dark-haired young man had hit him with, the assassin boss attempting to counter him. He never stood a chance as Gohan unleashed his energy blast, the beam ripping into the back of his head and exploding through his face.
There was no scream. Ginyu never had the chance to as his head vanished within the blast. The moment Gohan stopped, there was only the man's headless body, the stump of his neck cauterized and smoking.
Then without preamble, Ginyu's body collapsed to the floor.
...
There weren't any sounds. That was more worrisome than if the entire building was falling apart. Noise meant a fight was still going. A fight meant Gohan was still alive.
Which was a ludicrous feeling. Videl had seen Gohan perform stunts that baffled the mind and damn certain should have been impossible. Still, that didn't mean she couldn't worry about him.
Turning a corner, she slowed to a stop. The entire corridor was scorched from what had to be some sort of explosion. Walls literally curved outward, giving the hall a roundish look. There were other parts of the walls that were just gone, most likely the areas where the epicenter of the explosion had been. This was confirmed by the holes in the ceiling and the floor.
However, there was another hole at the end of the hall, one that lacked any scorch marks. Taking off running, Videl's feet pounded on the floor until she reached the gap in the floor. Leaping, she flew over the hole, landing on the other side and kept running.
As she closed the distance, a figure emerged from the hole. Placing a hand on the hole's edge and using it for balance, Gohan emerged into view, bowing his head so that he didn't hit it against the upper rim of the hole. Calmly he entered the hall, straightening his posture the moment both of his feet were on the floor.
Videl didn't stop her pace; in fact, she increased it. Her heart pounded in her chest until she jumped at the youth, her body colliding with his even as her arms wrapped around his neck and shoulders. Almost as if he hadn't expected, Gohan stumbled backwards, reaching out with one hand to the damaged wall behind him to steady himself even as he wrapped his other arm around her back.
"You're okay," she whispered against his heated skin, a sheen of sweat giving him a glistening quality. Her heart pounded in her chest, though she was certain that was from the adrenaline. It couldn't be because she was happy to see him.
"Uhh, Videl? Are you gonna-" Gohan began.
Videl pulled her head back, scowling up at him. "Yes, I'm going to hug you, you jerk. And I'm not letting go because you'll run off and I'm sick and tired of chasing you."
For a moment, the dark-haired youth looked baffled. Why, she didn't know. Surely he hadn't forgotten the conversation they had. There was no way she was entertaining the thought that he had since that would be a total guy move.
Looking at his face, she could see his expression relax, a gentle smile appearing. Yes, this was the face she fell for, the guy she had spent countless days and nights zig-zagging the world. Unable to help herself, she leaned her head towards him, pressing her lips to his.
Unlike their last kiss, Gohan reciprocated, which only excited her more. One of her hands moved from around his neck and grabbed onto the back of his head, his hair entwining between her fingers.
And then they pulled away, a growing redness appearing on Gohan's face, one Videl was certain was also on hers. He had both arms around her now, something she had missed while they had been sucking face. "So, are we done here?" she asked softly, beginning to play with the hair between her fingers.
"Here, yes." Unfortunately, the kind look on Gohan's face slowly hardened. "There's still more to do."
Elsewhere, obviously. "Where do we go first?" she asked.
It didn't really matter where they went. Videl didn't care. She had her man in her sights and she never let a target go. What had started as an unlikely assignment had twisted and morphed into something unrecognizable.
And she fully intended on staying with this target until the very end.
