A/N - Written for Ancient Runes class at Hogwarts, using the prompt "You're my one and only." I had to fight with writers block to even get this many words, so I hope you enjoy it.

She refused him yet again, and he walked away with his tail between his legs. Everyone knew it wasn't going to take long for him to get his bounce back, and he'd be asking her again. It was a cycle, one that repeated two, three, four times a month, and had done since third year.

Four years, almost to the very day of the first time, she finally accepted his request of a date. She had lasted longer than most people expected, but she had finally given in. It was about time. They all knew they were made to be together. It had just taken her a while to see that.

Their first date had been a disaster, but of the good kind. Rain had ruined the romance of a picnic, his friends had been heard sniggering from behind a tree, and he had been beyond nervous, but he had made her laugh, and he had been himself, and it had been enough to convince her to join him on a second, third and fourth date.

The proposal had been romantic. Her birthday, a meal for two, a dropped ring, and a search under the table had proceeded it, but his words were heartfelt and lovely, and she had no doubt of her answer.

xxxx

The wedding, a dream come true, friends, family, laughter and happy tears made it the best day of her life, and the night had been as good with the passionate, intense, gentle and sweet love making had been a perfect end to a perfect day, and the beginning of a new chapter.

The nerves, the hopes, the dreams, all banking on two little lines showing up on a stick. The waiting had been painfully difficult and the worries of the answer they waited on together were almost palpable between them. When the lines appeared, they hugged and kissed, and promised each other that everything would be alright.

He almost didn't make the birth. She hated him for not being there while she screamed in pain, refusing to push until the need became too much. He arrived as the babies head crowned, and he held her hand as she pushed their son into the world. They cried together as they held him. He was perfect.

She heard the laughter, heard the thump as he hit the floor, and she knew he was dead. She stood in front of the cot, using her own body as a shield to protect her son. She begged and pleaded but it was no use and she too was enveloped in green light.

Her life flashed in front of her eyes, tiny sections of a whole, most of them filled with him. He had been her one constant, and she loved him more for that than anything else. As Lily Potter hit the floor, she heard his voice echo in her head, the words James said to her at every monumental time in their relationship.

"You're my one and only."
