Brenna was violently pulled out of her sleep by the feeling of someone saking her. She sat up and rubbed her eys as the events from the previous day slowly came back to her.
"About time you woke up!" Detective Carver chidded, interrupting her flow of thoughts.
"Well, it's not exactly like I had a choice with you shaking me like that. What time is is anyway?"
"9:15am. Now get up and get a move on. They stop serving breakfast at 10am."
"Alright" Brenna said as she dragged herself out of bed. "Give me 15 minutes."
"I'm giving you 10. If you're not ready, I'm leaving without you."
"Fine, whatever" Brenna said, grabbing a change of clothes and heading into the bathroom. She quickly got dressed, brushed her teeth and quickly ran a brush through her hair.
"One minute!" Detective Carver announced as Brenna grabbed her purse.
"Geez, relax Dad! I'm ready." So the duo headed down. "Do you have your meds?" Brenna asked once they were seated. Detective Carver took a pill bottle out of his coat pocket and gave it a quick shake before putting it away again. "Good. So is it buffet style here or do we order off a menu?"
"Menu" he grumbled.
"Cool. So what are you getting?"
"Usual."
"Which is?"
"Two scrambled eggs with a side of potatoes and a coffee with one sugar."
"Neat. No adding salt on the eggs or potatoes, though. Not good for your blood pressure." Detective Carver gave Brenna an incredulous look. "Ok, then. So when are we going for that interview thingy?"
"I'm going to call up the Police Chief after breakfast and find out. And you, missy, are going to call your mother."
"Yeah, ok." A minute later, a girl who looked the same age as Brenna walked over.
"Hey. I'm Chloe. Here are your menus. Can I get you something to drink?"
"Usual" Detective Carver barked. SHe sighed and nodded before turning to Brenna and raising an eyebrow.
"Just some OJ, thanks." Chloe nodded before turning around and walking away. Once she was out of earshot, Brenna leaned towards Detective Carver. "Is it me or did our waitress seem a bit...off?" she whispered.
"That's Danny Solano's sister" Detective Carver explained. Brenna's mouth dropped open.
"Oh my God! I had no idea. How is she even working after everything that just happened?"
"She's moving on with her life, just like she should be doing."
"Wow! That's very commendable. I don't think I'd ever be able to do that."
"So, when April dies you're saying..."
"Woah!" Brenna interjected. "Don't even go there! April is as tough as nails. She's gonna beat this. I know she will!"
"Don't get your hopes up!" Detective Carver snapped.
"Don't be such a pessimist" Brenna shot back. Detective Carver simply shook his head.
"Just look at the menu and pick what you're getting before Chloe comes back. God only knows what's taking her so long with those damn drinks." He muttered that last part under his breath. Brenna sighed and picked up her menu, ultimately deciding on Chocolate Chip Pancakes with a side of bacon. Once they placed their orders, Brenna took out her phone. She saw one text from her mom and one from April. Brenna opened up the one from her mom first.
Brenna, I heard what happened! Are you ok? Do you want me to fly out there?
Brenna was about to respond when her phone was snatched out of her hands.
"Hey! I was in the middle of something."
"You can have your phone back after we're done with breakfast." Brenna sighed.
"But mom texted me. I just wanted..."
"You can have it back after breakfast" he replied in a slower and louder tone. Brenna sighed, leaning back in her chair. "So," Detective Carver began, "let's talk."
