Chapter 30

Elijah's POV

It's already been three days since the birth of my babies. Whoever thought I would use that particular sentence. I'm currently holding Mirenna, snugged in her silk blanket. One moment, her eyes would be wide as a sea, then be sleeping the next moment.

Elena was downstairs playing with the boys along with the rest of the family. Mirenna was a little cranky. I took a seat in the rocking chair that was set up in the temporary nursery.

I gently nudged her little fist and she immediately grabbed ahold of my finger. I have smiled more in these last three days than my whole existence. I could hear footsteps coming my way, but I didn't bother to look up.

The door creaked open, Elena's head popping through. She smiled at me, walking over to the pampers. Suddenly, a flash made me jump. I looked up to see Caroline in the doorway with a camera.

"Sorry. Too cute to pass up. Elena, grab two pampers." Caroline whispered, before leaving the room. Elena laughed, turning towards me.

"Our kids are going to be conceited." She smiled. She kissed Mirenna's head, then left the room. I look after Elena, noticing slight changes. She was kind of hesitant, then she would be a sad.

Then, there was times she would look at me like she needed to tell me something, then changing her mind.

I came downstairs with Mirenna, going straight to the living room. Kol was holding up Elias, imitating the Lion King scene with the baboon. I rolled my eyes, looking down at Mirenna.

"I know. Your uncle is crazy, but we have to love him. Who else is going to love him?"I said, walking over to the group. Caroline immediately swept in and took ahold of Mirenna. Bonnie settled Nikolas in my arms, then going over by Caroline.

I looked down at Nikolas, who was wide awake. He looked up at me and I smiled. I take a seat on the floor next to Elena. She smiled at me, then made a funny face at Nikolas.

"He looks like you, Elijah. That nose is all you." Elena said, laughing as she rubbed his belly.

"Mirenna looks like you. I fear for teenage years." I groaned.

Elena laughed at my expense. "Just imagine Klaus with Hope during those years." Elena said.

Kol snort. "Klaus would rather start a apocalypse than let a boy get in the radius of Hope." Kol commented. He settled Elias in his swing set. I could see he fell asleep.

Kol took a seat next to Bonnie, who was playing with Mirenna. He looked down at her. "No boys allowed! Okay?" Mirenna just looked at him.

"She has Elena stare down to the T." Kol joked. Elena rolled her eyes, but a smile was plastered to her face.

Elena's POV

It has been a week and everything has been going well, but it was time. It was seven at night. I was settling down the babies, but not for the purpose of sleeping.

I closed my eyes when I heard several thumpings from downstairs. Several moments later, I could hear floorboards creaking from the steps. I paid no attention, continuing my task at hand.

Behind, the door swung opened to the nursery. The steps faltered right outside the door. I could sense the hesitation, but he continued until he was next to my side.

"You can always change your mind about this, Elena. We can figure out another way." Mikael said, rubbing my shoulder.

"So more people can die? I can't handle that." Tears filled when I stared down at my angels."I can't risk their lives, Mikael. I know you can do what I ask. And I want to thank you for that." I said as I wiped away my tears.

I walked down the stairs, taking a seat on the third step. I could see the sun rising through the windows. My anxiety increased when I heard movement in the next room.

"What the hell…?" I heard Kol murmur. I steel my emotions when I hear footsteps coming my way. Elijah was the first through the door, sighing in relief when he saw me.

"Elena, what is going on? Where are the babies?" He questioned.

"Elijah, we need to talk." I started to say, but Elijah walked pass me up the stairs. At this point, everyone start to file out the room. Elijah came rushing down the stairs, stopping inches in front of me.

"Elena, where are…."

"Gone, Elijah." I said, trying not to be effected by his painful expressions. He continued to stare at me for a few moments, before it clicked in his head what I said.

His hands rested on my forearms. "What do you mean by gone?" He asked, glaring at me.

"I sent them away, Elijah. There are things I…" I stopped speaking when a growl released from his mouth. His grip tighten on my arm, but I didn't say anything I took. This wasn't my moment to feel pain. I felt it for months.

It was Klaus who came forward to pull away Elijah. "Stop, Elijah. You are hurting her." Klaus simply said, not looking my way.

Elijah backed off, glaring intensified with every steps, waiting for me to run off. "I want every detail." We stared at each other in silence. "NOW!" He yelled at me.

I sighed, looking away from his stare. I told him everything to Dahlia to meeting with Mikael, leaving Bonnie's involvement out.

"Mikael. I know you can hear me. I just need to talk." I said. I took a seat on a bench waiting for him to appear. I felt a presence approached me from behind. I scooted over to make room for Mikael, who sat down.

"I was at the compound today. I know it was risk being there with many of my children there, but I had to go. I saw my granddaughter. She looks just like Klaus." Mikael said.

He was quiet for so long I thought that was all he had to say. "I thought about our earlier conversation about you fighting. I should have been honest from the beginning with them. But part of me feared that they wouldn't believe. So,... I dug myself in bigger hole to the point I couldn't see the sun shine anymore." He said.

Tears bubbled in my eyes, spilling over. "Dahlia visited in my dreams today. She tried to link herself to me. Then, I saved by a woman, which I'm pretty sure it was Freya. She looked like Klaus." I said, smiling at that fact.

"I can't help thinking about that witch, the one who was about to kill Hope. I can't help but think that could be my child. Fighting a fight that isn't necessarily theirs. I want better for them." I turned to Mikael, looking up to him.

"I need your help, Mikael. Only you can do this." I said, grabbing his hand. He looked startled at my proclamation.

"I might be a thousand year old vampire, but that is useless to an ancient witch. I failed my family." He said.

"Dahlia haven't got to us yet, so you haven't fail. Just hear me out, before you turn me away." I said, tightening my grip on his hand.

We stared at each for a while. At one point, I started to get to leave, but he stopped me. "I will only listen." He said firmly.

I nodded my head, wiping my tears away. "Thank you. I have my last years being hunted as a human, which is no fun at all. I lost some of the best people, which still tears me up inside. I want my children to have a life. They shouldn't have to look over their shoulders all their lives." I said.

"What do you propose?" Mikael said.

"I want you to take them away, Mikael. I want you to give them the life I'm not capable of doing." I said, looking at his shocked face.

"In what world do you think I'm fit to be a guardian?" He questioned, sliding away a little.

"I know you are capable of protecting them. Think of this as your second chance." I said, trying to convince him desperately.

"I will help." Both of our heads turned towards Davina, who came down from the attic. "If Mikael agrees, I will leave with him and help." Davina said, coming over and sitting down.

"I'm not saying yes, but if I did, how would you get Elijah to agree with this?" Mikael said, looking as if he got me in a bind.

"I'm not going to tell him until after you leave. He would just stop me." I argued back.

"Elena…." Mikael started to say with a frown.

I sighed. " I know what you are going to say, so don't. Mikael, you have done the hunting your whole life, but have you been the hunted. It's absolutely terrifying! It's a painful thing to experience." My eyes briefly met Davina's, before looking away.

"If you do this Elena, Elijah won't come back from this betrayal. Can you live with that?" Mikael said.

I contemplated what I was going to say. I rubbed my belly and said the words that seal my and my kids' fate. "For my children, I can live with anything." I said, staring into his eyes.

I looked up at Elijah, who stared at me like I was the Devil himself. "So what you are telling me is that not only did you know Mikael, the man who made our lifes a living hell, but he also the person who has my children?" He stared at me with so much hate, he could have set me on fire.

I gave a slight nod, but jumped back when he lunged at me. Kol and Klaus caught him, pushing him in the living room. Bonnie took action by sealing them in the room.

I stood up from the steps, taking a step in front of the entrance. "Elijah, please listen to me! I know you hate me, but this doesn't just affects you. Dahlia and Esther is gunning for our babies. Even Hope is in the same danger." I tried to explain.

"When?" He asked, looking away from me.

"What?" I was confused.

"Even if Mikael keeps his word, when do I see my children?" He asks, looking at me desperately.

I closed my eyes, bracing myself for his reaction. "In eighteen years." I whispered, but everyone heard me. Elijah's face crumpled, tears filling his eyes.

"I thought you were different. You just the same as the other doppelgangers." He said, voice laced with rage.

"No, I take that back. You are a monster behind a pretty face. I want you out of New Orleans before the end of this day. If I see you after today, I will kill you. I won't bat an eye. Do you understand?" He growled.

I held my tears in and looked in his eyes. The ones I turned so cold and unforgiving. I nodded, before turning around and headed for door. Caroline and Bonnie followed me out the house, trailing me to my car in silence.

"I understand why you did it, Elena. Things never get easier, do they?" Caroline said.

"If you give me time, I can pack a bag…" Bonnie started to say.

"Bonnie, you are happy here. I would have never ask either of you something like that. Both of you deserve this. Men who absolutely worship the ground you walk on." I finally let tears slip through.

"Where will you go, Elena?" Bonnie asked, tears starting to form.

"Remember Agnes?" They both shook their heads yes. "Well, she mention a Keeper. Someone who is tied to Naturalis Elementis. If he or she is real, then we will need her or him to defeat Dahlia and Esther. Esther is up to something than killing her family." I explained to them.

"We will try to help you from this end, Elena." Caroline said, crying. All three of us formed a group, hugging for awhile. We pulled back eventually, wiping our tears away.

"This is not a good-bye, okay. I will see you again! We've been family for a long time. That will never end, no matter how far I am. I love you guys." I said.

Our heads snapped up to the house, seeing Kol and Klaus coming out the door. They made their way over to me. Klaus stood opposite to me, staring at me. To my utter surprise, he pulled me into a hug.

He pulled away, going back to his original position. "Despite the circumstances, I want to thank you. You are leaving to protect this family. I'm willing to trust you, which is a big thing for me. So for your journey, I'm giving you this." He said, pulling a hand size black case out, handing it to me.

"It is vials of my blood if you so happen to find yourself in the company of werewolves. You our chance to a family again if you succeed in finding a way to rid us from Esther and Dahlia." Klaus said.

I smiled. "Did you ever think our paths would lead us to this point?" I asked, looking up to his eyes.

He smiled, sadly. "No, but I'm glad."

"Thank you, Klaus for this." I said, hugging him one more time. He stepped over to Caroline, grabbing her hand.

Kol stepped up nervously. "I'm angry at you. We had a family already, Le-Le." He said, sadly.

"I understand, Kol. But I had to do it. I can't apologize, but I can work to earn each and everyone's trust again. That I can promise." I said.

He hugged me tightly. "Anger to the side for a moment, you are still my sister." He said in a whisper.

I smiled through my tears. "And you are my brother, Kol." I said truthfully. We pulled away.

"Actually, I forgot to give you this Klaus. All of the Mikaelsons." I pulled letters out of my jacket pocket.

I hand one over to Klaus, than the other three to Kol. "They are from Mikael." I said. Klaus was about to tear up his, before I stopped him.

"Just read it, Klaus. You might find closure." He rolled his eyes, but pocketed the letter. I look to the house, seeing Elijah in the window in his room. We made eye contact for a brief moment, before he leaves the window.

"One more thing, take care of the dog." I said, my friends nodding.

I give hugs to my friends again, then turn to get in my car. I start my car and drive down the path. I could see Caroline and Bonnie waving in my rearview. When I turned the corner, I didn't see them.

I drove down Bourbon street, but I slowed down when I saw Marcel going in Rosseau's. I pull over, then I got out. I ran over to the bar, going in. I looked around, finding him at the bar.

I walked over to him, taking a seat next to him. He looked up, surprised.

"Hi." I said.

"Hi. What are you doing here?" He said, turning towards me.

"I saw come in here. I wanted to say bye. I'm leaving New Orleans." I said, but I could see the confusion clouded his face.

"What? Last time, I heard you were playing happy family." He said, a little bitter.

I ordered a drink, then turned to tell him what happened. I down my bourbon when I was done. I looked up at Marcel, who was just staring at me.

"What?" I asked.

"I can't tell if you are crazy or brave doing that to a Mikaelson." He commented.

I look at him like he was stupid. "Ummm excuse me, but aren't you the same person who waged war against Klaus." I said.

Marcel smirked. "Touche." He looked down at his drink. "I got your letter and flowers after the whole werewolf thing. Thanks." He said, downing his own drink.

"They were your family, Marcel. I know how it feels to lose family. Despite what happened, I still care." I said, looking straight ahead.

After Damon died, I needed to get out of the house. I felt like the walls were coming down on me, hard. Once I took cure and Bonnie breaking the spell on my room, I left immediately.

I didn't know where I was headed, but I found myself outside of Marcel's compound. I found my way up to his sleeping quarters, I knocked frantically.

I was about to knock again, until the door swung opened. There, Rebekah in a man's dress shirt, legs bare, standing looking smug. "Well, look what the wind blew to the door." She said.

"Bekah, what are you talking…" Marcel lead off when his eyes landed on me. I didn't stay to hear what he had to say, because I walked off.

"Was everything a lie?" I asked, turning to him.

"No. My feelings were genuine for you. You were right that I had lingering feelings for Rebekah." He said.

I sighed. "I understand, Marcel. I was angry, but I understand. Anyways, I do wish you well and I wanted to thank you for all the good times we had." I said, getting up.

Marcel grabbed hand, pulling me into embrace. He kissed me and I kissed him back. It was nice, but reality came back as soon as our lips parted. I gave him hug, before leaving.

Two years later…

Katherine's POV

I came into my hotel room, throwing my purse on the floor. I kick my shoes, while pulling my jacket off.

Suddenly, a familiar scent reached my nose. I flicked on my light, finding Stefan sitting in one of my chairs.

I smirked, looking him up and down. "You look very good, Stefan. What's new?" I said, not worrying about an escape. I could easily overpower him.

"Damon is dead." He said, simply, looking around the room.

I sighed. I really did care for him, despite what everyone else thought. "Let me guess, over a certain brunette?" I said, snarky.

"Yes, he did." The voice I wanted to hear last echoed behind me when Elena walked through the door. I rolled my eyes, turning to look at her.

"But we aren't here to discuss Damon, but our safety." Elena said, standing against the door.

I scoff. "How is my safety any of your business?" I said, taking a seat. I was going to indulge them for a while.

"They affect the lives of my children." She said, smoothly. My eyebrow rose at her implications.

She must have saw my confusion, before she went into explanations. To say I was shocked out of my mind at the end of her rant is an understatement.

I crossed my arms and glared. "Elijah just basically gave you a slap on the wrist and I get chase for 500 hundred years." I said, agitated.

"That is what you get out of this! Unbelievable! Two thousand year old witches is going to be after us! The reason I'm here is because I need your help. Plus, you are a wild card I need a eye on you." Elena said.

I smirked. "And if I don't?" I challenged.

Elena pulled out a stake. "Your choice. A life or a death? It doesn't really matter to me." She said, glaring at me.

Little Gilbert grew up. I laughed at them. "Elena, you can't take me." I started to get up.

"This has been very entertaining, but I'm going to go before you embarrass yourself." I said.

Elena sighed, standing firm against the door. I walked up to her, then suddenly I was on my back, pinned.

Now, I was scared, but I didn't let it show. Elena squatted down, staring at me. She placed the stake at my heart.

"There is a lot of details I left out, but now I'm going to ask you again. A life or a death?" She glared at me, mines mirroring her exact look.

"Where are you looking to find this 'keeper'" I asked. Immediately, I felt this pressure remove from myself. Elena moved back against the door, keeping her eye on me.

"Due to my research, it all points to California." She said.

I rolled my eyes. "That helps." I said, getting up from the floor.

"Beacon Hills, California." She said. This my eyes start to droop, making me stumble. Stefan caught me, setting me on the couch. Before the darkness took me, I hear Elena say, "Sweet dreams."
