'Ash thinking'

"Dialogue"

*flashback*

I think I've rambled enough let's get to it!

Standing on shaky legs he took a moment to really take in his surroundings, the air smelt of petrichor from the recent rain. He walked through the expanse of trees surrounding him, droplets of water careened towards him in longing as he ran the tips of his fingers along the leaves collecting a swirling mass of excitement behind him.

Different shades of green were bursting to life in front of him chasing off the lingering speckles of black and white in his peripheral.

Taking a deep breathe Ash took a leap of faith into the trees, he caught onto one of the lower limbs swinging rhythmically from branch to branch. He felt powerful spinning and twisting through the air muscles burning comfortably, the water was chasing behind him as he continued his wild journey.

'I didn't know freedom could feel so refreshing, if I did this right he won't know my next move ever again.'

He twirled mid air water circling him in a glistening shimmer,

'But he does know my last location!'

The thought stopped him dead in his tracks the wind whipped around him harshly stirring leaves and branches in its wake, the backlash of running full speed through a forest, the water trailing behind him surrounded him as he caught his bearings coming down from his euphoric high.

'We have to get out of here now!'

He was never more thankful for the holes in his shirt than he was now, the droplets rushed to the slits attaching themselves to the barely exposed skin creating a suction motion swirling together to create a pair of sparkling wings on his back. He crouched down balancing on the balls of his feet.

'Let's hope I haven't lost my touch'

A flex of his toes and he was off soaring through the sky, the wind rushing past him bringing tears to his eyes. His shimmering gliders were flapping gleefully carrying him faster with each flap. He focused on their last location thinking of their next move, they'd have to pack quickly and move immediately or they'd have the risk of being caught and terminated which wasn't an option.

'Right now we're in Johto the only other place we could go is Kanto there I'll have time to recuperate and face him on equal terms, I can finally end the sham that's been holding this family together for years.' With plan set in stone he began descending getting closer to their camp site every passing second.

He saw everyone sitting in a circle having a discussion he could make out the words, getting worse, before he crashed into the dusty crumbling trail below him. His wings dispersed soaking the group as he skidded a few feet before stopping just behind the logs they were sitting on.

Misty rushed to his side just as he started moving, Ash sat up rubbing his head a groan escaped as loose pieces of dirt fell off the top of his head.

"Are you okay?" Misty was hovering around him worried unsure what to do, he flinched when ever someone came into contact with him.

"Peachy. Talk about a crash course" he grumbled shaking his head. Ash stood up wobbly determined to get everyone out of the area.

"We have to go" he said staring Misty in the eye unwavering, "I can't explain anything until we get out of this area." He grabbed his bag swinging it over his shoulder, taking off in a random direction. Everyone scrambled to grab their belongings chasing after him unsure of what was going on.

"Wait up Ash! Where are we going and what's got you so fired up suddenly!?" Chasity was dead on his heels struggling to stuff the rest of her foot into her boot.

"Danger, everyone is in danger and it's my fault, it's always been my fault since the day we met, I thought I could pretend nothing was wrong as long as I smiled and could protect everyone anyway I could."

His voice watery with tears he picked up his pace,

"But I haven't been doing that for a long time I won't ignore my instincts when I finally wedged my foot into the door of freedom. So you guys are either going to suck up and buck up or get dragged along with me, there's no disappearing at this point." She stood shocked.

"Wh..what do you mean it's your fault?" Delia asked tentatively. Ash sighed.

"Everything is my fault but I'll explain after we get out of here, there's no time we could die at any second." The others footsteps increased to match his pace after his last statement.

"Our destination is Kanto region we have to lay low the whole way there, at this point consider us wanted with a big red target on our backs. We can't walk our footsteps could be traced but we can fly to stay over the radar."

They continued walking in a rushed pace until they came upon the river they had set camp up by, a few had a pokéball in their grip ready to go,

"Before we do this I have something I want to do personally."

They all waited patiently as he stalked up to Paul, everyone held their breathes as the two stared each other down, Ash made the first move attaching his lips to Paul's unexpectedly if the other boys face was anything to go by.

Ash grabbed the front of his jacket to pull him closer deepening the kiss, he pulled back leaving Paul disoriented a dazed look on his flushed face. The girls were squealing to themselves while Delia sent him an amused but relieved glance. They gathered their bearings and prepared their Pokémon for takeoff.

Paul, Ash and Misty settled on Charizard the bipolar Pokémon grumbling about his nap being interrupted, Priscilla was absentmindedly stroking her Butterfrees antennas as her and Patience were talking softly together. Delia, Brock and Chasity were fidgeting anxiously on the back of Storm. Emerald stood awkwardly without a spot to sit. Ash hopped down beside her and grabbed her hand.

"Alright we'll have to improvise, since her Aerodactyl is resting Emerald and I are going to fly ahead we should be there within a day if we keep a steady pace stopping only when necessary" everyone nodded in understanding, Ash turned to Emerald a grin unexpectedly overtaking his face, a feeling of long lost giddiness gripped him.

"Pick your element" he said hooking and unhooking his fingers in his belt loops, she hesitantly chose fire. Ash took a step back as a pair of cracking blue wings formed on his back the flames floating effortlessly as he flexed them up and down experimentally. Emerald gasped staring in awe, they hadn't seen his wings in months.

"Your chariot awaits m'lady" he chuckled as she carefully jumped on his back between the massive ovens there.

"We're ready" he took a running start before leaping into the air, his wings leaving a steaming gust of wind as he took off, the others followed suit sticking close to the pair whooping in glee. They flew through clouds enjoying each other's company over the expanse of nature below, they passed over lakes, oceans, plains, marshes, mountains and volcanic active areas. Ash was discreetly gathering information on Kirai's whereabouts from the Pokémon occasionally flying by.

They were regions apart from each other giving them more than enough time to get to their destination. They continued their journey, location kept safe by an unbreakable bond between departed allies. After four hours of flying they landed in abandoned area outside of Cianwood City.

"We need to take a break we're halfway there but I'm scared for us to split up." Ash was nipping at his fingers a nervous habit he picked up somewhere between regions. Brock pulled Ash's hands away from his mouth ignoring the small flinch from the shorter boy.

"Maybe our issue is we're leaving you to make all the decisions, we're a team here so we work together, how about half of us go scope out the Pokémon center and the other half gathers groceries and some disguises maybe we can stop by and see Chuck for some help." Ash smiled gratefully at Brock a genuine smile that left him reeling.

"Yeah sounds fun, we meet in the center of town" they all nodded in affirmation, no one knew how to move around him any more he seemed so calm compared to the constant darting around they had grown accustomed to. Paul, Brock, Misty, Ash and Cilla were on grocery duty while the rest took off towards the nearest Pokémon center, the grocery group was trudging through the sandy terrain stray coughs filling the silence every few minutes. Misty sighed the silence grating her nerves, she began humming "Cha Cha by D.R.A.M" Paul began a crude intro as Cilla joined in the noise making mimicking a guitar. Brock was clapping two empty water bottles together.

"I like to Cha Cha eh!" Paul was hopping around with Misty and Priscilla garnering strange looks from the residents.

'We're supposed to be keeping a low profile' Ash thought irritably, he glanced at the odd little group shuffling through the streets before sighing heavily.

'Well I guess if you can't beat 'em join 'em!' He bumped Misty's hip with his own laughing along.

"With a Dominican that resembles Taina, eh!" Priscilla grabbed his hand and spun in circles pushing him into Paul when she got dizzy. They continued their moving band until they stopped in front of the mini market posing as Brock finished the song.

"Ahaaaahahahahaaaaaaaaa~"

They walked in happily nudging each other, teasing a pink faced Brock about his ending note. Ash and Paul continued to chat picking up Bread, Rice, Peanut Butter, Jelly, and Crackers as though the past few months hadn't happened. Shopping was going smoothly until they started arguing over which bag of chips to get.

"Barbecue for sure" Paul had his arms crossed stubbornly a small tick mark on his forehead.

"It's all about that SourCream and onion life!" Ash was glaring at him dead set on the bag. "It's even family sized so we don't have to buy two bags this time"

"Irrelevant Barbecue is family sized too!" He has the bag gripped in one hand running his finger under family sized for emphasis.

"What's irrelevant is your taste buds, they must obviously be damaged if you're craving barbecue," Paul looked affronted at the statement.

"If you worship that trash so much I hope you have fun reaching it," Paul threw his bag in the cart and stormed off muttering about needing eggs. Ash stared after him in disbelief, he looked up at the bag taunting him from the second shelf above the candy display, He groaned and jumped up not even close to the bag.

"Why is life so crueeel!" He was going to take another leap before a lighter hand grabbed the bag above him, he turned around coming in contact with the gym leader of Cianwood City.

"Chuck!?" He wrapped his arms around the older mans waist in greeting, before freezing and trying to pull away realizing what he had done.

*Don't touch me with your filthy hands unless I tell you too!*

He stiffened expecting a blow, surprised when Chuck laughed wholeheartedly and returned the hug.

"Ash! Longtime no see, how've you been? " Ash took a step back taking the offered chips gratefully. 'He hasn't changed a bit same red pants, no shirt and unique hairstyle'

"Iii've been doing. How about you?" Chuck brushed off the strange response regaling him about the strange trainers that had stepped foot on his territory.

They walked to the front of the store regrouping. Paul glowered at Ash who smiled triumphantly chips in hand. He snatched the bag out of the others hand and stomped to the register dejectedly leaving his chips in the basket. Ash tossed the bag into the conveyor belt unfazed,

"We were getting two bags anyway," he shrugged looking away nonchalantly. They finished checking out then donned their their disguises picked out by Misty and Cilla in the side alley much to Chucks confusion, he stared helplessly at Ash for an explanation.

"We're actually in a bit of a fickle pickle and could use a bit of help... if you don't mind?" Ash was sheepishly rubbing the back of his head.

"Uh sure," Chuck began to walk towards the gym expecting them to follow.

"Actually there are a few more of us" he said wringing his hands together rigorously, chuck chuckled.

"That's fine! Bring them along, meet me back at the gym?"

Ash sighed in relief, "Definitely."

The mismatch group dispersed in different directions. Meeting up with the Pokécenter group, they didn't move until all heads were counted and disguises were in place. They followed behind Ash confident in his steps.

"So what are we doing for sleeping arrangements? Cause our cousin Shelly said we could take up two rooms at the Pokémon center MAX." Emerald asked walking beside Brock digging in her ear.

"Well if Chuck is willing to help we won't have to worry about that," Ash said looking over his shoulder, they continued walking through town for twenty minutes only stopping when they arrived in front of a Japanese styled temple, a creek running peacefully down the sloping mounds instantly put the group in a calmer mood.

"We better get inside before something or someone disturbs the peace, there's always someone," Misty mumbled under her breath.

*I'll always find you there's no use running*

Ash shook his head to disperse the image of Kirai from his mind, a shiver traveled down his spine as he ushered the group into the temple.

He glanced over his shoulder, force of habit, once more before trailing quickly after the group.

'I'm just being Paranoid...'
