Kai and Dolphmon
His cousin got his digimon pal break, and his girlfriend too.
That was great and all. Takato had been pretty mopey for a while and Kai'd met Guilmon too. Friends didn't quite come like that anymore and it was a shame. He'd have liked a partner like that.
But the gate was fickle, and the digital world was a dangerous place and all, so he probably wouldn't be that lucky unless the world was in danger again – and he certainly hoped it wouldn't come to that.
Still though, it would be nice to have a partner.
And that was the thought he was walking down the beach with when he found his.
Though he didn't know it at first. It was just a digimon then – and he could be sure it was a digimon because it wasn't any animal he'd ever seen. It did resemble a dolphin a bit though.
And it was flailing in the sand. Luckily, it didn't look hurt.
'Are you okay?' he asked.
'I'm stuck,' the digimon said pitifully. 'I was trying to walk in the sand, and I got stuck.'
'Uhh…' Kai didn't quite know what to say to that. Dolphins didn't have legs, and neither did this dolphin look-alike.
But Dolphmon, as he called himself, really wanted to walk. So Kai tried to balance him on his fins.
'Whee,' the digimon giggled as he bounced. 'This is fun.'
Kai's arm started to hurt after a while though.
'Can you live outside water?'
'Yep, I just can't seem to walk on my own.' But the digimon didn't look too sad now. It was quite happy, bouncing along with Kai holding him up. 'Can I come home with you?'
'Uhh…' Kai blinked again. And wound up carrying Dolphmon home. And introducing him to his grandparents. And phoning Takato a few days later because he really couldn't carry or support Dolphmon everywhere on land and Dolphmon kept on coming back to him.
'Try a Digi-Modify card,' Takato suggested.
Kai searched his deck but he didn't see anything that would give a Dolphmon legs. Then he spotted a blue card. 'Ah,' he shrugged, scanning it. 'What the heck.'
What the heck was right, but in a different context. His scanner changed, turned into a digivice just like the one Takato always wore around his neck. Dolphmon changed too, shrinking in to a penguin look-alike.
'I can walk,' he said in delight, dancing around. Then he caught side of the digivice. 'I guess I'm your partner then.'
'I…guess so.'
Well, he had wanted a partner digimon…
He grinned. Who cared how it happened. He had a partner just like his cousin.
