Kuba Hachimiro was not in the best mood. His attempt to regain authority at the Academy had backfired spectacularly. After the 'Mizuki Incident', the Hokage had summoned Hachimiro to his office at four a.m. It had been the most intimidating moment Hachimiro had experienced since the Second Shinobi World War. Sarutobi, fully garbed in his infamous combat uniform, had laid into the Academy Head. The Hokage had openly called Hachimiro's competency as a shinobi into question.

"You are hereby placed on probation until you can prove your physical and mental conditions are suitable for active duty missions. After your competency is proven, you will carry out two consecutive C-rank missions. The Konoha Council will have a very generous retirement plan waiting for you upon your return. In fact, we will let you remain the de jure head of the Academy until Umino Iruka, the de facto Academy Head, passes his Jonin exams. Then you will announce your retirement and publicly declare your admiration for Iruka-kun's vision, dedication, and skill. Are your orders clear, Hachimiro-san?"

One did not question the Shinobi no Kami when his ire was raised. Hachimiro had quickly left the office and returned home. The Remedial Classes would not be re-graduating for another week, so his presence wasn't required. He decided to start training more seriously.

"In a way, it will be nice to retire as a true shinobi," Kuba admitted to himself. He had to have the proper mindset to succeed! 'I have been considering retirement anyway. My exit will not be under the best circumstances, but I will retire as a shinobi.'

The old man jerked his hand back from his doorknob the second his flesh made contact with the metal. A complex sealing formula spread across his door. In a flash of light, his door was gone.

"Uzumaki Naruto!" Kuba shouted in exasperation.

Across the street, a kage bunshin of said Uzumaki Gennin cackled as he took in the sight of his handiwork. He dispelled with a wicked grin. 'The Boss is going to love the look on Kuba's face!'

As a Hyūga, Hinata was supposed to carry herself in a dignified and proud manner at all times. Emotional control, self-confidence, and loyalty to the village and the clan were considered the highest of virtues among the Hyūga. It was expected that a Hyūga stride, march, or walk with purpose at all times. The appearance of strength was sometimes as important as the possession of strength. A Hyūga was to never 'trudge' to a location. Trudging was born from a state of emotional distress, a lack of self-confidence, or fatigue brought about by poor planning. The heiress of the clan was held to a higher standard. Trudging was something that she should loathe with her very core.

Right now, Hinata didn't care. She most certainly was in a state of emotional distress. Naruto-kun had failed his Gennin Test. All of his hard work had not been enough. The small voice in the back of her head that held her back when she was a little girl had returned. It shot venomous barbs at her ability. The voice reminded her constantly that she had failed. Worse, the failures had brought down Naruto. If she couldn't repay Naruto, then was her progress for nothing?

'I-I can't think like this! I've come too far and I know Naruto would hate to hear me being so down on myself!' Hinata fired back at that voice.

Her father and her clan would be proud of her recovery. Hinata banished the voice of doubt and self-loathing and headed for the Academy.

'I will figure out a way to make it up to Naruto-kun as soon as I am free,' Hinata declared. 'I still have my duty as a kunoichi of Konoha and that must come before personal desire.'

She could honestly say that the makeup of her Gennin cell was a complete mystery. A small, nigh irrational, part of her mind and a massive part of her heart continued to hold out hope that Naruto somehow leveraged his fuinjutsu abilities to pass his exam. If he passed, there was still a chance for them to be on the same team. Heat flooded Hinata's face as she thought of how happy that would make both of them. Memories of their training and growth filled the Hyūga heiress with pride. The time Naruto had called her pretty was a warm, luxurious blanket that further smothered the last hissing whispers of Hinata's self-doubt. These were the facts, the truths, about Naruto that Hinata would hold on to. They were comforting. They were the stimuli that caused the butterflies in her stomach to emerge from their cocoons. They…

"We…" Hinata gasped as that train of thought acted as a very different kind of stimuli.

It was overwhelming the modest young introvert in so many ways. The moment generated a heat that coiled in her core and radiated outwards. Hinata felt like that heat would cause her to lift of the ground and ascend to the heavens at quite the relaxing pace. On the other hand, it had been so…public! If that had happened…it would have been wonderful!

But it would have also been public!

'We…' Hinata struggled continuously to gather her thoughts and acknowledge what had happened.

She had nearly shared her first kiss with Naruto! There was a moment where she waffled between jumping up and down in giddy excitement and wanting to curl up in a ball to disappear. First kisses were very important! They were supposed to be with someone special, which Hinata readily and proudly admitted that Naruto was someone special. They were supposed to be romantic. Hinata sank into the memory as if it were an onsen, and recalled that the conversation certainly had a romantic edge to it.

First kisses also needed a proper setting!

The Academy classroom surrounded by dozens of their classmates wasn't Hinata's ideal location for a first kiss. She wouldn't have complained about kissing Naruto. She would never complain about that possibility. It was just that she would likely have died from mortification as her female classmates dragged her away to extract every solitary ounce of gossip from her. Hinata could actually hear the whooping cat-calls of some of her male classmates or feel the jealous glares of the other boys who might have held some one-sided affection for her. That line of thought showed her clearly how she would have shriveled up from embarrassment primarily at the crude reaction of certain members of her class.

'Still…I would have kissed Naruto-kun,' Hinata confessed. 'I…I could have probably died happily from gossip extraction.'

Hinata felt a pair of keys turn inside of her being. One locked her spine into place. The other unlocked a corner of her mind and unleashed a new voice into her psyche. Where the old voice of self-doubt felt like cold steel dragging, carving, along the contours of her mind, this voice was something else entirely. It was almost like a finger encased in a lace glove tracing certain corners of Hinata's mind Natsu-san had discussed, and warned Hinata against indulging, on several occasions.

'A real kiss would certainly go a long way to helping Naruto recover from the Gennin test. That little peck on the cheek practically made him melt.'

'No! I can't do that! It would be improper! It is far to forward!'

'I do need to make up for not doing more to help him pass…and I wouldn't say I don't want to…'

'See! I Nothing to worry about!'

'Except for Otou-sama! He hasn't given his blessing for having that kind of relationship with Naruto-kun! C-Can you imagine how cross he would be? What if he thought Naruto-kun forced the kiss? Otou-sama is already so protective! Remember what he said the night he discovered Hanabi's toy seal!'

The two internal voices ceased their back-and-forth. Hinata sighed and the two voices said in unison, 'Why can't this be simple?'

"Hey, Hinata…are you okay? You've kinda spaced out."

Hinata's eyes snapped open. Her head, already swimming in a swirling mix of intoxicating anticipation and introverted modest mortification, was given that last push into complete overload as she gazed into a pair of concerned electric blue eyes.

"N-Naruto-kun…"was all Hinata managed before everything blinked away.

Naruto made it thirty meters outside of his apartment before his Shadow Clone's memories became his own. The twisted visage of an enraged Kuba Hachimiro shouting in a rage was one of Naruto's favorite pranking images. 'That'll teach him for screwing Iruka-sensei over! Iruka-sensei is a much better teacher anyway!'

Once again, Naruto was amazed by the versatility of his new ninjutsu. For a time, Naruto had been incredibly confused by how easily he had learned the Kage Bunshin no Jutsu. He was still screwing the regular Bunshin no jutsu up. He had made a stable clone once, but that had been after nearly dying in the battle against Mizuki. Naruto was still figuring it out, but improvements had been made. In fact, Naruto was determined to prove that he could use the Bunshin no jutsu. His prankster mind had already thought of a few inventive ideas for combining the two clone techniques. In order to prove that he could do the technique successfully, and to prove that Hinata had helped him a ton, Naruto had a dozen Kage Bunshin practicing the Water Walking technique Hinata had taught him.

'I've got to get that down. Hinata needs to know that she did do a ton to help me. I know I could have made it if I had another few days!' Naruto declared to himself.

The Uzumaki was looking very forward to surprising his tutor-slash-crush when he showed up with his hitai-ate.

A curiosity poked at the insides of Naruto's mind. Was Hinata his crush? Crush implied that only one party held, or shared, the interest in the other. It was very obvious, even to Naruto, that the feelings he had for Hinata flowed both ways. He wasn't sure that he and Hinata had could be called boyfriend and girlfriend yet. There was absolutely no doubt that they were headed in that direction. Naruto definitely respected Hinata. She was incredible in just about every way. Hinata was intelligent, skilled, powerful, very…insanely pretty, and the way she looked at Naruto…

The shiver that worked its way down Naruto's spine was almost like the aftermath of jumping into ice water, but far less numbing. He hadn't felt that alive since Iruka had given Naruto his hitai-ate.

Of all the looks Hinata had shared with Naruto, the one in the Academy during the Graduation exam was about as prominent as the seal on his stomach. That was especially true since it had come right before Naruto and Hinata had…

"OH MY GOD. I NEARLY KISSED HER!" Naruto shouted without considering applying a filter to his thoughts and voice.

It was so obvious in hindsight! Naruto had been swept up in Hinata's determined faith in his ability to pass. They had locked eyes as they declared they wanted to see each other's hitai-ates. Naruto had never placed his complete faith in a person like that. He had rarely received such complete faith in return. The only fact that put the brakes on the moment was their location. Naruto wasn't entirely sure, what would have happened. He just knew something would have happened and that a great deal of any potential flack would have been aimed at Hinata. There was no way Naruto could have let anyone embarrass or belittle Hinata.

Just the thought of someone trying to harm Hinata in anyway made him angry. If someone tried to physically hurt her, Naruto wasn't sure what his reaction would be. Other than the fact there would be property damage.

'Which reminds me,' Naruto thought as he made six kage bunshin. The six quickly transformed into random civilians and set out. He still needed to get back at those bullies from years ago.

Naruto's mind quickly turned back to what had nearly happened during the Graduation Exams. Involuntarily, Naruto gulped. The realization that he wanted another shot at kissing Hinata made him simultaneously happy and nervous. There was another feeling in his gut. It was a sence of anticipation that was only matched by the moment before he had perfected Uzumaki Sealing Ninjutsu: Impenetrable Steel Vault.

It was one of the most powerful forms of acknowledgment Naruto had ever received.

Naruto was terrified by the strength of his feelings and the rapid intensity they possessed. Hinata possessed the Byakugan and hadn't hinted that she was aware of Kyūbi or anything fox related. Still, the thought of a negative reaction from the girl that set his thoughts aflame was one of the most nightmarish scenarios Naruto could imagine. 'I have no idea how to approach that subject with Hinata…'

The newly-revealed Jinchūriki sighed as he thought about the possible team assignments. The Old Man and Iruka-sensei had clammed up when Naruto had asked about the teams last night. That…didn't bode very well for Naruto's fervent dream of being on Hinata's team. He, after remembering his behavior from the previous night, had acted a bit childish and slipped into the comforting veil of absolute sarcasm whenever the Hokage or Iruka had mentioned teams. Naruto recognized his tantrums for what they were, but didn't care. Hinata was the strongest kunoichi he could think of and would help Naruto grow as a shinobi. Everyone knew they worked well together, so why wouldn't they be on the same team?

In the end, Naruto realized that his desire to have Hinata on his team was in no way connected to professionalism. It was solely personal. He wanted Hinata for her and for him. Naruto had connected with Hinata in two and a half weeks on a level he previously thought was impossible. He wanted to explore what kind of bond being Hinata's teammate could create.

He shook his head to clear those thoughts. The Academy's roof was visible in the distance and throwing a tantrum in the middle of team assignments wouldn't help him at all. Not only would it make him seem like a bit of a wimp, it would definitely put him on the back foot with whoever was on his team.

At least when he opened his eyes back up, he caught sight of Hinata standing rigidly in place. For a moment, Naruto believed she had her Byakugan active. Naruto was bummed for a second that Hinata's kickass Dojutsu had spoiled his surprise. That possibility was proven false when she didn't return his wave. 'I hope I don't have to kick anyone's ass for making her upset.'

"Hinata! Hey, Hinata!" Naruto called out excitedly and jogged towards the Hyūga Heiress. She didn't respond. "Hinata?"

Naruto cocked his head to the side as he circled Hinata curiously. She was deep in thought and pressing her fingers together nervously. Occasionally, Naruto would catch a mumble or whisper escape her lips. 'No, Naruto. Don't do that now.'

He stopped in front of the object of his deeply-rooted affections and waved his hands in front of her face. There was no reaction. "Oi! Hinata!"

Still no response.

Naruto pulsed his chakra, thinking that Hinata may be caught in a genjutsu of some kind. If she was, Naruto swore to end whoever put her in it. There was no sign of a collapsing genjutsu, but Hinata did stir a bit. The boy leaned in closer and was only a few inches from Hinata's nose.

Finally, Hinata made eye contact with him. Naruto sighed in relief. "Hey, Hinata…are you okay? You're kinda spaced out."

Hinata turned bright red and squeaked out, "N-Naruto-kun…" before collapsing.

Naruto cried out in panic and caught Hinata before she hit the ground. He threw her arms over his shoulders and picked her up bridal style. The relief Naruto felt at hearing, and feeling, Hinata's gentle and steady breathing was as comforting as a free bowl of ramen. He didn't want to make Hinata's condition any worse so instead of sprinting madly towards the Academy he moved at a cautious pace. Once again, he casually used Kage Bunshin no jutsu. He assured the clone that Hinata was going to be fine. The kage bunshin took off at full speed to get help at the Academy.

"Hang in there, Hinata," Naruto whispered in an attempt to comfort the girl. Hinata's next action surprised Naruto greatly. The heiress's grip tightened and Hinata nuzzled into the crook of Naruto's neck. 'Maybe Hinata is just really tired from training with her clan? I could carry her for a while…help with her exhaustion…' Naruto considered. He wasn't so narcissistic to summon a kage bunshin to pat himself on the back.

But he considered it.

The Jinchūriki was very worried about his friend, but couldn't deny that he was enjoying carrying her like this. He received a few odd looks as he carried Hinata to the Academy. Naruto didn't care; he was more concerned with making sure Hinata was okay. Naruto's favorite teacher was waiting at the Academy gate.

"Naruto," Iruka sighed. "What the heck happened?"

"I…I don't know Iruka-sensei!" Naruto exclaimed. He shifted his weight so that he could hold Hinata closer. The young Jinchūriki started explaining what had led up to Hinata's collapse. Naruto was rewarded for his concern with a contented sigh from his 'burden'.

Iruka didn't know whether to cover his face to hide his laughter or palm his face in exasperation at the unintentional act the two Genin were pulling. Hinata was clearly fighting to keep her eyes closed. The Byakugan Princess was determined to enjoy the moment as long as possible.

"Hinata, would you care to explain?" Iruka settled on chuckling as he pinched his nose.

Hinata slowly opened her eyes and was blushing furiously. "I…had a lot on my mind. Otou-sama says that I will soon have permission to undertake the ritual Senbon Sparring. The stress of that ritual, Naruto's…situation, and team assignments was too much, I suppose."

The teacher was well aware that Naruto had not put the girl down. He was also aware that Hinata seemed to have no intention of being put down.

"As your superior officer, I order you both to walk…separately to a seat," Iruka groaned. "Hinata, did you eat this morning?"

"N-No, I was far too nervous and worried about…last night's incident."

Naruto and Iruka both tensed. "Hinata…how much do you know?" Naruto asked.

"N-Not much. I heard Iroha-san mention that there was a sweep for spies and traitors. There were also rumors that…that you were involved, Naruto-kun," Hinata responded quietly.

"There is some truth to those rumors, but it is a B-rank secret," Iruka explained. Hinata quickly realized that she had no grounds to inquire further and nodded. Naruto and Hinata reluctantly, oh so reluctantly, separated. The Academy teacher shook his head mirthfully. "It looks like Hinata had quite the grip."

"Well, yeah, she's the strongest kunoichi in the Academy!" Naruto actually sounded offended that someone could doubt Hinata's strength. The two found the nearest seats that were open next to each other. Naruto took a second to ask a question that was bugging him. "Hey, Hinata…how did you find out I was involved?"

"I-I heard Otou-sama talking with Iroha-san and Kō-san. They all seemed impressed by something you did last night. Otou-sama even mentioned he'd like to speak with you…" Hinata explained.

Naruto was a brave young man. He had faced down a traitor. Naruto defeated said traitor with a powerful original technique. Hinata's father looking to meet with him should not have filled him with dread.

But it did.

And Naruto was man enough to admit it.

"I'm sure that Otou-sama won't do anything…rash. He is very impressed with your skills with fuinjutsu, Naruto-kun," Hinata spoke to reassure not only Naruto, but herself.

"That's…cool," Naruto attempted to sound confident. He was. It was just that meeting Hiashi would devolve into questions like, "Are you planning on dating my daughter?" or "If you hurt her in any way, how would you prefer the Hyūga dispose of your corpse?" Naruto wasn't sure he was entirely ready to answer those questions without being overcome with abject terror.

"Naruto-kun…how did you pass?" Hinata asked after a moment's silence.

"I'm not sure if I should talk about it here at the Academy. I'll send a kage bunshin to set up a time for us to meet up." Naruto grinned as he revealed one of his techniques.

"Otou-sama knows that technique. He uses it occasionally when training Hanabi-chan and me at the same time. I-I'm impressed that you learned such an advanced technique, Naruto-kun," Hinata praised her likely soon-to-be-official boyfriend.

The rest of the graduates filtered into the classroom, likely for the last time in their shinobi careers. There was a great deal of excited talk, but a hint of nervousness and even a bit of melancholy leaked through occasionally.

Iruka did not need to say anything to cause the conversation to die down. His appearance was enough. There were several gasps as people saw the cuts and abrasions doting his face and hands.

"Gennin of Konoha," Iruka began formally. "Attention!"

The obvious command caused everyone, even Naruto to rise to their feet. Almost everyone bowed in unison as Sarutobi Hiruzen entered the room.

"I wish to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you for graduating. The Will of Fire burns brightly in your generation. Konoha has faith in your abilities and expects excellence from such a promising graduating class!" The Hokage spoke from the cuff. Naruto was actually taking notes, much to Iruka's chagrin. "And to answer your question, Naruto, no. Suna, Iwa, and Kumo have not officially surrendered yet."

"They need to hire us to deliver the messages. Maybe seeing all of us," Naruto responded with a grand gesture. "will show them what real shinobi look like!"

A civilian-born ninja shouted, "Damn right!" from the back of the room. There were a few others who took up the call. The Hokage gladly let the students have a moment of pride and nationalism. Naruto continued the usual joke by 'graciously' allowing Hiruzen to finish.

"I am sure that many of you are wondering why Naruto and I are here while Mizuki is absent. I cannot go into full details as they are State Secrets. All I will reveal is that Mizuki is a traitor and that Uzumaki Naruto assisted in disposing of said traitor. His loyal action proved his worth," Hiruzen said firmly. Hinata, Iruka, and Naruto were all extremely pleased with the speech. They all knew the real audience of the Hokage's words. It wasn't the Genin in the room. It was their parents. The nervous and excited murmuring continued for a few moments. The Third Hokage held up his hand and silence was restored.

"Now, I will announce the final team assignments…Team One," Hiruzen began. Every student leaned forward in anticipation. The Hokage's tone made it clear that he would accept no arguments, wailing, or gnashing of teeth in regards to the assignments. Naruto and Hinata were growing worried as the names continued. So far, they only recognized a few names. The Gennin Cells so far did not have anyone they were even close to considering friends.

"Team Seven will be under the command of Hatake Kakashi. The members of the cell are Uzumaki Naruto," Hirzen began the announcement. Naruto and Hinata were still holding out hope, but the authoritative look from the Hokage was not buoying their spirits. "Haruno Sakura, and Uchiha Sasuke."

"Well, shit," Naruto groaned. "No offense, Sakura," the Jinchūriki quickly added. He also threw up a hand seal and created a kage bunshin. Everyone stared in shock at Naruto's jutsu. They also were stunned as the clone headed to the door and pointedly waited for the Hokage to finish the assignments.

"None taken, Naruto." Sakura wasn't really paying attention to her other teammate. She was honestly thrilled by the team set up. Sasuke's presence was the biggest win. This meant she would have numerous opportunities to show Sasuke that she was taking her role as a kunoichi seriously. Sakura had been training with her father every chance she had. Naruto's advice had really sunk in. The kunoichi was also glad to have Naruto on her team for several reasons. One, he had grown out of his short-lived crush. That would prevent any awkwardness, especially since he had so obviously fallen for Hinata.

'They are actually pretty cute together,' Sakura thought. The Haruno girl really was rooting for those two.

Second, Naruto was really talented. Sakura's mom had explained that Naruto's talent for seals was unusual for someone his age. Finally, Naruto worked hard. His extra training with Hinata proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt. The blond prankster may not apply himself diligently to academics, but was very dedicated to everything else.

And did Sakura mention she was on a team with Sasuke? That detail was the best. Still, she felt a bit bad that she got her 'perfect' team while Naruto and Hinata were so disappointed about being separated.

"Team Eight," Sarutobi continued. "will be under the command of Yuhi Kurenai. The members of the cell will be Aburame Shino, Hyūga Hinata, and Inuzuka Kiba."

Hinata's shoulders slumped in disappointment. Unlike Naruto, she knew enough about decorum in the presence of the Hokage not to give voice to her objections.

"Team Nine is in active service on a long-term C-rank," Iruka mentioned. "The next team is Team Ten."

"The commander of the cell will be Sarutobi Asuma," the Hokage slipped in seamlessly to the announcement. The pride in his voice was clear to everyone. "The members of the cell will be Yamanaka Ino, Akimichi Chouji, and Nara Shikamaru."

Ino wanted to cry out at her sour luck. 'Forehead's with Sasuke-kun and someone rooting for her to get with Sasuke-kun while I'm trapped in purgatory with Chouji and Shikamaru!'

The Hokage announced the final teams and gave another speech on the expectations, hopes, and requirements Konoha had for all her shinobi.

"Now, you all have thirty-five minutes for lunch before your Jonin senseis begin to arrive," Hiruzen announced. Naruto caught the sympathetic look Iruka shot Naruto and was momentarily confused. "I suggest you all spend this time with your teammates and get to know those who will serve and bleed beside you in the future. Dismissed!"

The classroom exploded with energy, but none topped Uzumaki Naruto. He jumped up on the desk and loudly cleared his throat. "Oi! Team Eight and Team Seven, where do you all want to eat?"

Sasuke took one look at the gathering before walking away. Akamaru yipped and Kiba erupted into laughter. "Akamaru guesses that Sasuke is allergic to fun."

"Oh man, that's awesome," Naruto laughed. He turned to Hinata and Sakura. "Ladies, you pick our spot."

The majority of Team Seven joined Team Eight. Off to the side, Hiruzen and Iruka smiled. Naruto was finally receiving the acceptance and friendships he deserved.

Naruto's Kage Bunshin saw the same thing and was appreciative, but not exactly happy. "So, why am I stuck with Sasuke? I know you both know about our issue."

"We are aware of the conflict surrounding the shared attraction towards Hinata," Hiruzen assured Naruto. "However, I believe that you and Sasuke are professional enough to put that aside, especially in light of the mutual nature of your relationship with Hinata. If there are conflicts, I trust that Kakashi-san will address them."

"I've got no reason to have a beef with Sasuke," Naruto's clone snorted.

The Hokage nodded. He was seeing the potential issues Team Seven would face during Kakashi's Bell Test. "I am glad to hear that you will be approaching the team assignment professionally. I'm sure you would appreciate an explanation behind the rosters."

Naruto's kage bunshin nodded. "I'd like that."

"We'll discuss them at my office. If you would follow me, please. Iruka-san, you are invited as well. Your input was valuable in selecting the Gennin Cells," Hiruzen commanded. The two shinobi nodded and bowed to their leader. The Hokage wasn't entirely looking forward to this conversation but recognized the potential in the conversation.

Naruto routinely announced to the world that he would become Hokage. This was an opportunity to show Naruto that sometimes the Hokage had to make the choice Konoha needed rather than the one the Hokage wanted.

Sakura was disappointed that Sasuke didn't join them for lunch. It really worried the immigrant girl to see Sasuke isolating himself so totally. There were cases in the refugee community of people shutting their hearts, minds, and mouths to others. Sakura had watched those unfortunates simply waste away. The thought of Sasuke wasting away stung her deeply. Sasuke had once been a vibrant young man. That had been shortly after the bulk of the Kirigakure refugees arrived. The Uchiha Massacre sapped Sasuke of all life.

Sakura had seen it too many times in her life already. The thought of someone slipping into that kind of madness of isolation when they were surrounded by others was abhorrent.

"So, has anyone heard of their sensei?" Naruto's question snapped Sakura out of her funk.

"I have no clue this Kurenai lady is," Kiba answered. "Kakashi though, he's pretty famous."

Hinata nodded. "My father speaks of him occasionally."

"Oh, that's pretty cool." Naruto took a bite of his meal. No one had ever seen Naruto bring a lunch box or bento.

"Naruto, something I've always wondered. How do you have a hot lunch sometimes? You don't carry a bento or anything like that," Sakura asked.

"My seals," Naruto answered. He received an odd look from Shino and Kiba. "I'm probably the best fuinjutsu expert in all of Konoha. I put my lunch in a storage scroll."

Naruto fielded questions from Kiba and Shino. The Jinchūriki enjoyed the attention and spun the impromptu interview into a business opportunity. It was an enjoyable lunch. He just hoped his clone's meeting with the Hokage wouldn't ruin his mood too much.

Hiruzen, Iruka, and Naruto's kage bunshin sat in strained silence. The duplicate of the Uzumaki Seal Prodigy had his arms crossed and was impatiently waiting for the two older shinobi to explain the team selections.

"The basic, traditional, and safe explanation is that your grades over the years in the Academy place you as 'Dead Last'. Uchiha Sasuke had the highest overall grades and Haruno Sakura was the 'top-rated' kunoichi candidate. This is, as you would no doubt put it, bullshit." Hiruzen shocked Naruto's clone with the casual nature of the comment and the dropping of a well-timed curse.

"That is the system we have used over the course of the 'Factory period' of Academy," Hiruzen continued. "It makes the civilians happy by giving them concepts they can grasp. The Land of Water Refugees are relieved that the methods in our Academy are humane and value the lives of their children. That system has ended. Konoha will continue to leverage our superior population, but we must make sure our shinobi can stand eye-to-eye with any foe anywhere in the world."

"W-What's the real reason?" 'Naruto' asked.

"I want Konoha to return to dedicated military formations." Hiruzen reached into the desk and pulled out a file folder. "I know you only paid enough attention to pick up your team and Hinata-chan's. Look at the folder for Team Four. You wish to be Hokage. Tell me why a Hokage would set up the team in such a manner."

The kage bunshin opened the folder and read the names. "Saito Yumi: good scores in chakra control, good scores in academics. Family is one of the few with permission to hunt in the forests surrounding Konoha. Hasegawa Katsuro: high scores in trap-making and good chakra control. His civilian family are successful merchants and caravan operators. Imai Osamu: good scores in trap making and chakra control. The Imai are one of the shinobi clans that joined Konoha after Kirigakure nearly fell apart and specialize in combination jutsu with eagles. Their sensei is Wantanabe Yuji, former ANBU Hunter-nin."

The God of Shinobi and Iruka watched as Naruto thought things over. Naruto grabbed a pen and a scratch sheet of paper. He jotted down a few notes and leaned back in the chair. "Yumi and Katsuro both come from families that know the Land of Fire very well. This Osamu guy can use his eagle to track things. Wantanabe knows how to be stealthy and track targets. He isn't preparing Team Four to follow in his footsteps…Border patrol and smuggling control? Osamu and Katsuro set up traps while Yumi uses genjutsu to cover them?"

"Exactly," Iruka praised his favorite student heartily, but a hard glance from the Hokage stopped any further praise. Hiruzen was proving a point.

The Hokage slid another folder across to Naruto. "Team Six."

"Sano Akihito: highest scores were taijutsu. His chakra control was…almost as bad as mine. His father was a shinobi who specialized in Doton Justsu. Ikeda Sora: Really good chakra control and good taijutsu. Orphaned…in the Kyūbi attack…lives with his aunt who is a medic-nin. Endo Manami: wow, great chakra control, but abysmal taijutsu…dad is a civilian doctor and mom is a medic-nin. You've assigned Wada Iō as their sensei. Hey, he's the medical-nin that helped me out when I broke my arm two years ago! Looks like he specializes in…Doton Jutsu."

"And, pray tell, is the purpose of Team Six?" Hiruzen leaned forward and rested his chin on interlocked fingers.

"They are a medic team," the clone's eyes shot open. "This is…this is brilliant. Akihito can provide cover for Sora and Manami while they provide medical help to any team they pair up with."

"What else?" Iruka prompted.

Naruto's kage bunshin was silent for a second. "Three out of four shinobi on the team have great chakra control. You've set things up so that Akihito's weakness is addressed."

"Very good Naruto," Hiruzen continued to address the kage bunshin as if it was Naruto. "Team Eight."

'Naruto' was silent as he read the files. He wasn't totally familiar with Shino or Kiba, so took some time to see how the abilities complimented or, preferably, clashed with Hinata's own. Team Eight were all children of clans whose Kekkei Genkai or Hiden Jutsu made them excellent trackers. Hinata was a taijutsu specialist. Kiba and Shino were both capable at mid and long range. Kiba could even fight very well in standard taijutsu. Naruto had seen Kiba and Akamaru practice their jutsus occasionally. He would be a terrible liar if he said Kiba was the weak link. Shino also wasn't a weak link. The Aburame heir had finished near the top of the Academy class. It was also widely known that the Aburame were one of the "Four Noble Clans". The Aburame, along with the Akimichi, Hyūga, and Uchiha were among the first to embrace Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara's vision of a unified Shinobi world.

Iruka handed Naruto the dossier on Team Seven. Naruto immediately poured over Team Seven's weaknesses.

The Sandaime Hokage noticed the gears in Naruto's head working to bring a smile to the seal prodigy's face. "Tell me what you think my flaw in the assignments is."

"Team Seven lacks a dedicated scout. I'm focused on fuinjutsu and taijutsu. Sakura is geared towards genjutsu and maybe some Suiton jutsu her old man could teach her. Sasuke's all about ninjutsu and taijutsu. Team Eight could use genjutsu coverage, which would benefit Sakura as this Yūhi Kurenai seems to be a genjutsu expert."

"What if Sakura uses a genjutsu and the enemy shinobi have a sensor-nin?" Hiruzen countered.

"I-I…" 'Naruto' tried to counter.

Hiruzen leaned forward. "How will Sakura contribute to the overall mission of reconnaissance?"

"She's book smart?"

"So is Sasuke. He could easily learn the basics of tracking. As for the dedicated scout for Team Seven, have you forgotten the nuances of the Kage Bunshin already, Naruto?" 'Naruto' was silent for several moments. Hiruzen leaned forward and continued. "I have another reason for Team Seven's make up."

"B-Beyond being an assault team?"

Hiruzen nodded. "Sasuke needs positive influences in his life. The boy has incredible potential, just like you, but is heading in a worrying direction. Naruto…you are more like Sasuke than you realize. It is just that you have fostered your Will of Fire. You have reached out to others and are slowly triumphing over your adversity."

Naruto's clone soaked up the praise and managed to whisper 'thank you' before Hiruzen continued. "Naruto…you are stronger than Sasuke."

The kage bunshin looked up in shock, but the Hokage gave him no time to speak or question. "Perhaps not in taijutsu or ninjutsu, but you have not retreated from your considerable pain. Sasuke has closed himself off after the tragedy of the Uchiha Clan's Downfall. I have a role for you to play. I will not pretend that I am unaware of the potential for conflict between yourself and Sasuke. Konoha does not want to lose anyone to isolation and madness. Sasuke needs to open back up to the world."

Hiruzen locked eyes with Naruto. "I have faith that you will be able to reach Sasuke. Naruto, you may be the only one who can."

The newly promoted Gennin filtered back into the classroom to await their senseis. Naruto and Hinata took seats next to each other. Shino and Kiba sat in the row behind Hinata. The Uzumaki guided the conversation and, surprisingly, tried to keep Hinata's teammates involved. Sakura had hung back in the hopes of talking with Sasuke about Team Seven.

Team Six's sensei, Wada Iō was the first Jonin to arrive. Naruto tensed as he collected the memories from his recently dispelled shadow clone.

'Man, The Old Man really hammered the fact he is Hokage hard,' Naruto internally complained. 'He at least taught me something and explained things a bit.'

"Is something the matter, Naruto-kun?" Hinata prompted sotto voce.

Naruto hummed. "Oh, the kage bunshin I had meeting with the Hokage and Iruka-sensei dispelled. There was a chat about why the Gennin teams were set up the way they were."

"Really?" Kiba cut in. "I'm curious about it. I mean, 'Team Six' doesn't seem to have a reason behind it. Akihito has awful chakra control and the other two are pretty good."

"Medic squad." Team Eight gave Naruto various degrees of disbelieving looks. "Not sure if I can reveal some of the stuff Old Man Hokage showed me. Sorry."

Kiba shrugged while Hinata and Shino simply nodded. Naruto desperately wanted the conversation to continue but fate, alas, conspired against him. Yūhi Kurenai had arrived to collect Team Eight.

"I'd say good luck, but y'all won't need it," Naruto said with a grin. "You've got Akamaru."

Team Eight reacted with various degrees of amusement. Akamaru howled in a manner that clearly translated as, "Damn right!" Kiba shook his head as he chuckled. Naruto was surprised that his comment even got the edges of Shino's lips to twitch upwards. He would definitely consider the small emotional tell a strategic victory for the forces of comedy. The Uzumaki's favorite reaction was Hinata's light giggle. It was musical. Naruto wanted to slip into the soft tones and search for all its nuances.

"I'll see you later, Naruto-kun. Otou-sama will likely wish to extend a formal invitation to meet with you soon," Hinata explained, promised, and attempted to soothe all at once.

Naruto nodded. "I'm looking forward to it." His statement was absolutely true. There would never be a time he didn't look forward to seeing Hinata more. If that meant he had to deal with Hiashi, so bet it. 'Besides when I'm Hokage, I'll have to deal with Konoha's biggest clan. Heh, that's an angle I can work. Flattery is a shallow ploy, but I don't want to piss Hinata's pops off.'

Kurenai spoke quietly to her team for a moment. Naruto swore she shot him a look.

'I hope Kakashi-sensei shows up soon,' Naruto thought as another sensei arrived to collect one of the Genin cells.

Hinata bowed to her teammates as they departed. She was undeniably disappointed she was not on Naruto's team, but she was a Hyūga. Her role for the village was clearly defined and Hinata had received her orders. She would carry them out proudly and would not let her team or village down. It was a relief that neither of Hinata's teammates seemed to have interest in pursuing Hinata, romantically or politically. Shino and Kiba just seemed to be genuinely nice young men.

'It wouldn't surprise me if they already have potential arranged marriages, Shino especially,' Hinata realized.

Kurenai was standing beside Hinata with an expression that many would consider unreadable. To Hinata, her sensei was a painting. The Hyūga heiress could see the brushstrokes of concern, pride, anticipation, self-doubt, and self-confidence contributing to the artistry of the Jounin's beauty.

"Is there something you require, Kurenai-sensei?"

The Jounin nodded. "I would like your honest opinion on the team set-up. You have permission to speak freely without fear of censure or this information being relayed to your teammates."

"There is a part of me that is disappointed I am not with Naruto-kun," Hinata admitted without hesitation or shame. "We have grown very close, very quickly. Our training sessions show that we work very well together. However, I am a kunoichi of Konoha and the heiress of the Hyūga Clan."

"Go on," Kurenai prompted. She was very pleased with the young woman's poise and self-confidence. Kurenai would have expected most fresh Kunoichi to dance around and be coy about their romantic interests. Hinata's response had fire! The Hyūga maiden was almost challenging Kurenai to comment on the budding relationship between herself and Naruto. However, the point that pleased Kurenai more than anything was the order of terms in Hinata's self-description. Hinata had put the village before her Clan. The response was also clearly drilled into Hinata's very being.

The Hyūga were truly loyal.

"I know that as a soldier for my village that I will have to carry out orders I may personally disapprove of. The team assignments aren't offensive in any way. Hokage-sama's rationale for Team Eight's existence and purpose are clear and very sound," Hinata took a calming breath. As an introvert, speaking to a new person for this long and this openly was a challenge. She would overcome and succeed, however. "This will help me grow as a kunoichi."

Kurenai was pleased by the response. Praise formed at the tip of her tongue, but Hinata added one final tidbit to the conversation.

"And I know there will be time to see Naruto-kun outside of missions and training."

"I am proud of your responses and attitude, Hinata." A smile graced the more experienced kunoichi's features. "What is the stance of your Clan on Naruto-san?"

"Father approves, but wants to meet Naruto-kun," Hinata suddenly discovered something on the ground worth smiling at. Kurenai chuckled. "Do-Do you think Naruto-kun's team has met their sensei yet?"

"I'm sorry, Hinata…but no," laughter threatened to spill from every syllable. "Kakashi-san is notoriously tardy. If he has even arrived at the Academy, it will be a miracle."

Team Seven was growing increasingly frustrated. It had been nearly forty minutes since the last Jonin sensei had collected her team. At least that Jonin had an excuse! She was a former member of Cryptology and her very specific expertise had been required by the Jonin commander.

Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke had sat in silence for some time. Sakura occasionally would try to engage Sasuke in conversation. It hadn't worked. Naruto held back speaking much to Sasuke. The Hokage had made it clear that Naruto should reach out to Sasuke. However, Sakura liked the guy for some reason. Naruto considered the Haruno girl a friend and couched his responses to back up her points.

That strategy had fallen flat and Naruto had slipped back into the comfortable routine of making scrolls.

"Mass production! I can mass frigging produce scrolls! Unquestioned monopoly here I come!" Naruto exploded. Sakura jumped at the outburst. Sasuke even started. Naruto ignored them for a moment and quickly unsealed all of his supplies. He made a number of Kage Bunshin. "Let's get cracking, boys! We'll have that condo by the end of the summer!"

All but one of the clones quickly got to work. Naruto had pulled him aside and gave him other orders. The clone nodded his head eagerly and dashed out of the door.

"Where is he going?"

Naruto turned to Sasuke with a smirk. "He's going to find this Hatake Kakashi guy. I'm tired of him wasting all our time. We've all got things to do. You've got training," Naruto hazarded a guess at Sasuke "Your parents will want to celebrate," Naruto nodded at Sakura before aiming his thumb at his forehead. "Me? I've got to get a dozen storage scrolls to a few shops before seven tonight."

"Is that all you use fuinjutsu for? Making money?" Sasuke asked somewhat dismissively.

"Nope, but I gotta say, it's nice having a steady stream of income. I have a few combat seals and some multi-purpose seals. And then there's the kicker," Naruto bragged.

"Kicker?" Sakura asked.

"Not sure I can talk about a kinjutsu," Naruto admitted after mulling his slip over for a while. "You can ask Kakashi-sensei when he gets here."

"I'd answer that question with 'You can ask the Hokage later', but that's just a guess," a smooth, even voice slipped into the room. All three Gennin jumped at the voice. Naruto's clones cursed as one of them spilled ink on a scroll. Sakura nearly tripped over a seat, but Sasuke immediately entered a fighting stance.

"How'd you get past my kage bunshin?" Naruto gasped.

The mysterious masked man with a single visible eye chuckled as he turned the page in the orange book he was reading. Each Genin immediately recognized the flak jacket he was wearing. "Jounin."

"So…you're Kakashi-sensei?" Sakura asked.

The man pouted for a moment. "Hokage-sama is taking all the fun out of my mysterious entrance…Meet me on the roof in five. We'll have a proper introduction there."

Team Seven watched the Jonin disappear in a Shunshin. Naruto instructed his clones to clean up and head home. He then turned to his teammates. "Anyone else up for putting an adhesive seal on every page of that book?"

"Considering that book was smut," Sasuke growled. "Absolutely."

Sakura's shoulders drooped. "Our sensei…was two hours late…because he was reading porn?!"

"Seems that way." Naruto started heading for the door.

"How many of those seals do you have?" Sasuke asked as Team Seven headed for the roof.

"Enough…" Naruto smirked.

Team Seven reached the roof in less than three minutes. Kakashi appeared to be lazing against the railing with his arms crossed. It was a lie. His arms were resting near two shuriken pouches on his flak jacket. His weight was positioned so that any frontal assault could be avoided by simply leaning back and falling over the rail. No need to waste chakra on a substitution when simply dodging would suffice after all. He wasn't expecting his Gennin teams to suddenly lose their minds and attack him, but it was hard to turn off years of highly-ingrained institutionalized paranoia.

'Then there is the fact that they are eyeing my masterpiece of literature with a threatening aura. Brats these days don't appreciate the classics."

"You all made excellent time," Kakashi praised his students theatrically. "Let's all take a seat and get to know each other."

Kakashi was not truly 'getting to know' his students. He had diligently read the files on each student. He had actually requested the members of this team. Kakashi owed Naruto so much. Minato, Naruto's father, had filled the void in Kakashi's life following the suicide of Kakashi's biological father. It was the least Kakashi could do to act as Naruto's sensei. Sasuke was a similar case. Kakashi felt a drive, an obligation, to Obito. Team Seven was also the best chance to save Sasuke's soul.

Sakura didn't have quite the issues that Naruto and Sasuke possessed, but they were there. As a refugee, Sakura had several issues regarding the traumas of her youth. She'd seen war. That experience was another tool in saving Sasuke.

Naruto was a large part of Konoha's plan to stabilize Sasuke. Kakashi hoped to turn their rivalry friendly and give Sasuke a measuring stick. Naruto's friendly and gregarious nature would hopefully crack the rocky exterior of Sasuke's soul. Sakura's memories of war and the perils of revenge attacks were almost as vital.

'If they pass the Bell Test, they could be great,' Kakashi admitted. 'If Sasuke didn't have an eye for Naruto's girlfriend I'd give them great odds to pass. Now…'

The Gennin took seats around Kakashi. The Jounin was surprised at how roughly equidistant they all were. "How should we start, Kakashi-sensei?"

"Name, likes, dislikes, hobbies, hopes for the future…things of that sort," Kakashi drawled. Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke returned the Jounin's flat tone with a flat look. "Fine, I'll get started. I'm Hatake Kakashi. I like things such as people taking the initiative. I dislike unpleasant things and the word 'Floccinaucinihilipilification'. My hope for the future? Mm…Icha Icha Tactics being released before Konoha gets a Godaime Hokage."

"What the heck is Floccinaucinihilipilification?" Naruto spat.

"A long word about constantly thinking something is worthless," Kakashi explained.

"So…it's my stance on the other hidden villages?" Naruto asked.

The Jounin chuckled and nodded. "Seems that way. Since you are so eager to speak, you can start us off."

"I'm Uzumaki Naruto, Godaime Hokage Candidate. I like ramen, fuinjutsu, and the people that treat me with respect! I dislike how long it takes to heat water for my cup ramen, but not as much as I dislike being shortchanged for my hard work on my artfully created fuinjutsu products. They're for sale by the way," Naruto helpfully pointed out. "My hobbies are developing original seals and sealing ninjutsu, training with Hinata, and semi-joking with Old Man Hokage about why the other shinobi villages haven't surrendered to Konoha yet. My hope for the future? I guess it's to be recognized by the village as the greatest seal master and greatest Hokage."

"Well, that was detailed," the masked Jonin laughed. "Next…Haruno."

"As you mentioned, sensei…I am Haruno Sakura. I enjoy reading, trivia games, and how…content my parents are to be in Konoha. I dislike senseless bigotry and senseless wars. My hobbies are mostly reading and recently, training with my father. It is my hope that my fellow refugees will assimilate into Konoha and strengthen the village."

'You have no idea how perfect that answer is, Sakura,' Kakashi thought.

"Your turn," Kakashi gestured to Sasuke.

"I am Uchiha Sasuke," the young man announced. "My likes and dislikes are my own. The closest thing I have to a hobby is my shinobi training. This 'hobby' is a tool to fulfill my ambition of restoring and reviving the Uchiha Clan through killing a certain man."

Team Seven was quiet as they processed Sasuke's introduction. "Now that you all have gotten to know each other a little better, I have some exciting news! Tomorrow morning at seven a.m., we will all meet at Training Ground Three for 'Survival Training'. Make sure you don't eat breakfast"

"We had survival training less than a week ago," Naruto lazily pointed out. It was obvious his tone was mimicking Kakashi. "So, what is this 'Survival Training' really?

"I am curious, too," Sakura added in. The prospective third member of Team Seven's contribution to the inquiry was a dismissive grunt. Sasuke was confident that whatever Kakashi could concoct wouldn't even slow him down.

"Well, this really is survival training in a sense. Can your careers survive? The tests you took in the Academy were designed to gauge the merest baseline of shinobi potential. My test will determine if you are fit for active duty. Every Jounin sensei will be having a similar test tomorrow. Sixty-six percent of the teams will fail. The lucky ones will be sent back to the Academy until the next Graduation Exam. The others will be forced into either administrative, logistical, or hospital duty only…and the really unlucky ones will be barred from military duty completely."

A gear turned in Sasuke's head. "That's why the Academy only teaches laughably elementary basics. If someone fails the test and is barred from being a Konoha shinobi, they can't go rogue and take anything more useful than the Kawirimi with them."

"Exactly," Kakashi joyfully confirmed. "Obviously, the controls on Clan-born Shinobi are even tighter. But that's a discussion for later…either with me if you pass or Iruka-san when you go back to the Academy."

The three Gennin gave Kakashi a hard look. He had spoken so gleefully about the 'opportunities' that awaited them if they failed his 'survival training'. They weren't going to fail. They simply refused to.

Hatake Kakashi, for once, hated his 'You will probably fail,' act as he observed his potential Gennin depart the Academy. This year's potential Team Seven was different from every other Gennin Cell the Hokage had tried to foist on Kakashi. Unlike the usual collection of misfits and egotists the infamous Copy-nin was assigned, Team Seven had been requested. There was absolutely no way Kakashi would have let his sensei's son or Obito's sole remaining relative be taught by anyone else. There had been a few complications that had nearly derailed Kakashi's plan. First, Naruto and Sasuke had both taken a shine to Hyūga Hinata…whom had incidentally been Kakashi's first choice for the cell's kunoichi. She was undoubtedly one of the most talented kunoichi in generations. The Hokage's plan for specialized military formations had also thrown a wrench in that plan. Gennin and Chūnin were going to be reorganized into divisions again. Specialized teams would be required for the return of the platoon concept.

'If I had known about that, I wouldn't have gotten into that argument with Koharu and Homura after the mission to the Takumi Village. No wonder a mission to steal those radio blueprints was an S-rank…'

So, Kakashi had settled on Haruno Sakura. Settled might be too harsh a word, Kakashi thought. Sakura had several factors that made her ideal for one of Kakashi's ultimate goals. That goal was reigniting Sasuke's Will of Fire. Itachi's madness and atrocities had nearly extinguished Sasuke's outward manifestation of Konoha's guiding philosophy. It still simmered under the turbulent surface of the Uchiha's shattered heart. The dedication to the Will of Fire Naruto and Sakura demonstrated would hopefully help Sasuke heal.

'And if Naruto and Sasuke resemble their mothers as much as I think they do, Naruto will eventually force feed the Will of Fire, good cheer, and a love of ramen down his friend's throat. That last one…literally.'

The Jounin, widely considered to be the leading candidate for the position of Godaime Hokage, strolled into the incumbent Hokage's office. Sarutobi Hiruzen was enjoying a quiet moment painting. The day's paperwork had been completed and Team Ryōchi was not due to return from their B-rank mission for several hours.

"How did the introduction go?" Hiruzen asked without turning away from his art.

"Surprisingly well," Kakashi confessed. "I feel that there is a solid chance they might pass my test. Sakura seemed professional. Naruto and Sasuke weren't trading barbs over Hiashi's heir either. That was one of my biggest concerns."

"It seems Sasuke-kun was merely interested in the prestige of dating the Hyūga heiress and as a way to distance himself from the young women who fawn over him."

Kakashi laughed. "If he was anything like Obito, Sasuke would be reveling in all that feminine attention."

Hiruzen turned around to collect his pipe. He motioned for Kakashi to take a seat. The Jounin politely declined. The Hokage nodded as he took the seat behind his desk. "I want a report on how Naruto handled the assignment."

"Took it pretty well. There were a few tells, but then again, Naruto is a teenager in his first relationship. Hormones and whatnot," Kakashi explained.

"Do you foresee any complications?" the Hokage probed.

"Possibly," the ex-ANBU captain confessed. "Naruto is a crafty one. He'll probably try to figure out a way for Team Eight and Team Seven to cross train. I think it will actually be a good idea, as it will prepare the Gennin Cells for the Platoon system. The issues are likely potential 'leadership' amongst the Gennin during the training sessions. Naruto, the Inuzuka boy, and Sasuke are all driven 'out-front' types. They could clash over leadership. Even Hinata might try to take command as Hiashi has been grooming her for that role her entire life."

The Hokage was silent as he pondered the assessment and statement of one of his most trusted agents. One fact that immediately struck the venerable Sarutobi was Kakashi's unintentional confidence that Team Seven would pass. The second was the potential of the two teams. "When Teams Seven and Eight enter full rotation, I suggest you encourage Naruto's suggestions for joint training. Speak with Kurenai-san about observing the teams for Chūnin Potential. The platoon system will require solid Chūnin with varied skills and knowledge to succeed."

"I'm not going to cut Team Seven any slack because of the members family connections, sir," Kakashi said firmly.

Hiruzen took a deep drag of his pipe. "Good. I know Team Seven has incredible potential, but if they aren't ready to utilize their potential then I want them in the Remedial Course until they are ready."

"Of course, Hokage-sama," Kakashi agreed. "Is there anything else?"

"No, you are dismissed," Hiruzen offhandedly mentioned.

Kakashi disappeared via Body Flicker. He quickly locked his precious copy of Icha Icha in a secure locker. 'I wouldn't put it past those kids to try to destroy my book tomorrow. I can't take any chances!'

Naruto was a bit annoyed with his sensei. This was not the epic start to his career the Uzumaki envisioned. 'At least my team situation isn't as apocalyptically bad as I feared,' Naruto thought. It wasn't anywhere close to Naruto's perfect team. Heck, Naruto had only the vaguest idea what a perfect team would be. It would have had to fit into the Old Man's military strategy and have Hinata on it.

"I wish I had known what the team set-ups would have been based on," Naruto grumbled to himself. As much as it sucked, Naruto was now a soldier of the Leaf. He had his orders and would carry them out. "I've just got to figure out how to get a bit of what I want while still avoiding insubordination…"

The sixty-six failure rate kept yelling for attention in Naruto's head. He compared that against the Hokage's grand plans. The mental back-and-forth led Naruto to a single conclusion: the 'factory' Academy's focus on individual achievement sucked!

'Let's see,' Naruto thought. 'This new system is based around the Cells working together. The Cells are based around a specific task too. We'll have to work together as a team. Hinata's team is meant to scout. My team is designed to wreck absolute face. Team Six has two medics and a guard…'

Naruto paused in his thoughts to allow himself a moment of triumphant laughter.

He going to make sure as many teams as possible passed. It just required a bit of 'creative intelligence gathering'.

The fuinjutsu prodigy quickly made a kage bunshin and instructed it to try to locate Hinata. He did promise Hinata he'd do that earlier. Naruto headed back to the Academy and used another wave of his kage bunshin to scout out the halls to the records room. The path was clear, but Naruto left several kage bunshin behind to watch his back. The clones replaced various items in the hallway and used the transformation jutsu to become the items. Naruto searched for the information on his graduation class. He 'borrowed' a pen and paper and started copying down names, addresses, and a few details about each of his classmates that could impact any potential tests. A pair of his clones dispelled and gave Naruto knowledge that two Chūnin were rushing towards the office.

"Dang it, I tripped some kind of alarm," Naruto grumbled. He made a few more kage bunshin to put everything back. Naruto used the substitution jutsu to switch places with a flower pot outside. He dispelled the remainder of his clones inside the Academy. Everything went really well. Naruto was loving kage bunshin! It was one of the most useful techniques ever. He hated one of the sources of his gigantic chakra reserves, but wasn't going to complain about exploiting it. A second wave of kage bunshin scattered to the four winds. The original Naruto decided he was going to deliver the news and the plan to Hinata personally.

It was probably a chance to show off his shinobi skills to Hinata's clan. There would be no way in hell the Hyūga would let their heiress hangout with…much less date…a complete scrub! Naruto felt his face heat up a bit as he thought about Stage Two of his Master Plan. Stage Two was officially dating Hinata. Unfortunately, Stage Two meant having a long, in-depth, and likely kind of tense conversation with one of the most powerful and probably very protective men in the entire village.

Possibly the world.

'Hinata's worth it though,' Naruto admitted. 'Besides, I'm going to need the Hyūga Clan's support to become Hokage.'

"Hokage-sama!" Hiruzen heard the voice and took a deep, calming drag on his pipe. "Hokage-sama!"

The door sprang open and Ebisu, his grandson's tutor, rushed into the Hokage's office. For once, Konohamaru did not charge wildly declaring his intention to 'defeat' The Professor and become Godaime Hokage. Instead, the young boy stood quietly behind his frazzled sensei. Konohamaru was confused by the situation and wanted to see how the situation would play out. The energetic young man spun his scarf like a kusarigama as he awaited the Hokage's response.

"There was a break-in at the Academy a few moments ago," Hiruzen reported dryly. Ebisu nearly face-faulted due to the casual nature of the admission. The Hokage, like his grandson, found it highly amusing and decided to continue. "The perpetrator was Uzumaki Naruto and a number of his kage bunshin. He did not take anything and merely copied the addresses, names, and team assignments of his graduating class. There will be no punishment for his actions as they are directed towards serving the best interests of Konoha."

Ebisu was struck silent as the Hokage's tone became firmer and his intent became undeniable. "You were aware of the situation, Hokage-sama?"

"I have a vested interest in Naruto's progression as a shinobi. The village as a whole is unaware of just how dedicated the boy truly is to Konoha and becoming a splendid shinobi without shortcuts. Instead, Naruto wishes to receive the acknowledgment of the village through his own efforts and hard work."

Ebisu tensed. The rebuke in the Hokage's tone was subtle, but undeniable. Ebisu would have to reconsider how he approached tutoring the Honorable Grandson. The Honorable Grandson smirked as his grandfather made Ebisu sweat. It was really funny. He was also really curious about this Naruto guy.

'Maybe I should meet him,' Konohamaru decided.

"Ebisu-san," the Hokage grumbled as he refilled and reignited his pipe. "Perhaps I should consider placing you on the same probation as Hachimiro-san if you have failed to notice that my grandson is no longer in my office."

"What?!"

Sarutobi Konohamaru heard his tutor's surprised and exasperation and wanted to snigger, but he needed to find out where the real Naruto was heading. If he ran into one of his clones, that would only slow Konohamaru down. If he slowed down, Ebisu would easily catch up. He needed an inside source…

Luckily, two of the Academy teachers were debating the very focus of Konohamaru's search.

"What would we punish him for?" a teacher Konohamaru recognized as Umino Iruka asked. "I wasn't aware placing a lovely flower pot in the Records room was a crime."

"He broke in! Naruto-san didn't take anything, but he copied a large number of files! You can't deny the small changes in filing position or the eraser dust around the table." the second teacher countered.

"I'm sure you'll accuse me of favoritism, but as acting Academy Headmaster, I will not punish Naruto for acting like a shinobi. I'll talk to him about leaving tells after he finishes being interrogated by Hyūga-sama later."

"Interrogated?" the other teacher asked. There was a bit of humor as Iruka's horrible attempts at not laughing were infectious.

"Naruto and Hinata-sama are very close…I think Hyūga-sama will wish to discuss just how close they are," Iruka revealed.

"Meeting a girl's father unannounced! That might just be punishment enough!" the older teacher chuckled. "Regardless, I think the security of the records room needs to be addressed. If Naruto-san can break in that easily, then we would have never noticed a Chūnin or higher level ninja's break-in."

"I will discuss it with Hokage-sama," Iruka promised.

The conversation was hard to follow as Konohamaru headed towards the Hyūga clan grounds. His mom had drilled basic information about the other major clans into the young Sarutobi since he had learned to read. It would take a little while to get there. Konohamaru just hoped he could beat this Naruto guy there.

Naruto was completely unaware of his tail. His focus was divided between the looming meeting with Hinata's clan and the memories filtering in from the few bunshin that had dispelled. So far, things had gone pretty good. Most of the graduating class had been responsive to Naruto's points. Almost everyone had seen the Hokage call in Naruto's kage bunshin, which with a few creative adjectives, many of his peers came to believe was actually Naruto.

All in all, things were going very well.

The Hyūga Compound wasn't the monolithic building or the sprawling district Naruto had pictured before his arrival. However, he was still impressed by the Hyūga home. There was a gate guarded by a single Hyūga member. Naruto glimpsed the scale of the complex over the walls. It radiated tradition, wealth, and prestige.

"May I help you?" the guard asked.

Naruto nodded. "I was wondering if Hinata…" The fuinjutsu expert was suddenly acutely aware that leaving off an honorific for Hinata would not go over well at all. There'd be no doubt the guard would turn Naruto away. "-hime was available. I have…uncovered information I believe would be helpful tomorrow."

"For her Jounin-sensei's exam?" the Hyūga Guard asked. Naruto nodded in confirmation. "I will need to inform Hinata-sama and her father who wishes to present this information."

'Uh oh,' Naruto thought. He hadn't planned on meeting Hinata's father yet. Still, all things considered, this was probably the best case scenario for meeting Hiashi in the flesh. The Hyūga Clan head seemed not to want Naruto's head on a pike at the moment. Naruto was also about to provide information that would help Hinata dismantle whatever test Yuuhi Kurenai could possibly cook up in record time. The only thing he had to fear was fear itself.

"Uzumaki Naruto," he declared with unwavering pride in his name. "Before you go, what's your name? It'd be rude as all get out not to ask for your name."

"Hyūga Iroha. Please wait here. I will return with news on Hiashi-sama's decision," Iroha ordered.

Naruto nodded. He wouldn't want anyone barging into his home unannounced. 'Well, that's a lie,' Naruto mentally confessed. He certainly wouldn't mind Hinata showing up out of the blue.

The young man fiddled with one of the sealing scrolls at his belt. He was curious about how long the Hyūga would keep him waiting. Would they tell him to scram quickly? Would they make him wait a long time in order to 'put' Naruto in 'his place'? There were a lot of questions. Questions that, depending on answer, would require a delicate yet overwhelming response. The Hyūga weren't the only ones with pride, after all.

Iroha returned before Naruto could solidify potential counters to any slight against his pride. "Uzumaki-san, Hiashi-sama has agreed to meet with you."

"I am grateful for Hiashi-sama's permission," Naruto said in the most over-the-top polite tone he could muster. The boy was actually trying too hard to be polite. Iroha was trying not to laugh at the spectacle. It was a very rare day when Hiashi-sama smiled in response to humor. Granted, the intense crimson shade that had graced Hinata-sama's face had been absolutely endearingly funny.

'Maybe I should watch these two fumble over their words with my Byakugan,' Iroha struggled with the urge to chuckle. "Please follow me. Oh, and Uzumaki-san…I hope you realize the deep level of respect the Hyūga Clan has for Hinata-sama, our heiress."

"Well, yeah," Naruto agreed with the blindingly obvious statement. "A person would have to have no idea what respect was not to respect Hinata…hime!"

'Dang it! I almost forgot an honorific there. I should really remember to use those occasionally.'

Iroha could definitely agree with the young man's position. "Uzumaki-san, I assume that you've never been told how to properly interact with the head of a clan."

"Y-Yeah," Naruto answered. His sky blue eyes were marred by clouds and the floor was suddenly an enticing view.

"Knock three times and await Hiashi-sama's permission to enter. Take six steps into the room before bowing. Never refer to Hiashi-sama with anything less than respect. He is one of the most powerful and influential men in the village. Your ambitions are known to almost everyone in Konoha. If you truly wish to become Hokage, you will require the support of the Hyūga Clan."

"I understand," Naruto revealed. "Knock three times. After Hiashi says it's cool to come in, take six steps and bow."

"Very good. I will depart now," Iroha announced and strolled down the hall. After a few moments, he activated his Byakugan to observe just how Hiashi-sama would deal with Naruto. It wasn't every day that a young man was so obviously head-over-heels for Hinata-sama…

Naruto was unaware Iroha was continuing to monitor his actions. He knocked three times and waited. The young man was also unaware that Hiashi was aware of his presence. The Hyūga patriarch was drawing out the moment for two reasons. First, he wanted to tease his eldest daughter for a moment. Hiashi found Hinata's slight blush and barely noticeable shift a welcome development. It reminded Hiashi that his daughter was still a young woman beneath the rigors and pressures of her status as the Hyūga clan's heiress. The second reason for Hiashi's delay was to test Uzumaki Naruto. If this young man was serious about pursuing his daughter, he would have to earn it. Hiashi knew a great deal about Uzumaki Naruto. In fact, if Hiashi could reveal his knowledge without committing a capital offense, the information about Naruto's legacy would be public knowledge. That revelation would shift the dynamics of a potential relationship between Naruto and Hinata a great deal. Hiashi knew that the Elders and traditionalists would 'question' Hiashi's decision due to the current perceptions of Uzumaki Naruto.

If the truth was known, they'd be begging Hiashi to ensure the relationship. In a way, it was quite pathetic.

'Still, the boy has done so much for Konoha and has received scorn instead of thanks,' Hiashi acknowledged silently as he prepared to speak. "Enter."

Naruto nodded politely as he entered. Hiashi desperately fought the smirk forming on his lips as Naruto was clearly counting the proper number of steps in his head. As the Uzumaki came to a stop, he bowed. It was rough, but passable. There were Hyūga his age that had similar difficulties.

They were, after all, young men in the midst of growing up. Hiashi remembered how ungainly he felt at that age. He felt like he was tripping over his own unusually longer legs.

A pang of regret flashed in Hiashi's gut at Naruto's situation. 'I will have to make inquiries.'

"Thanks for meeting with me, Hiashi-sama," Naruto said with another bow. His face was lower so he missed Hinata flinch at the breach of protocol. It was improper to speak before a Clan head in his home.

'At least he was polite to Otou-sama,' Hinata acknowledged. She hoped her father would focus on Naruto's attempt at politeness rather than his minor gaff. Naruto-kun never had anyone train him in the nuances of social hierarchy, after all.

"Iroha-san informs me that you have information about the Cell Assignment Exams," Hiashi said without preamble.

Naruto fought off a feeling of slight. He couldn't blow his top, not in front of Hinata. "Yes, Hiashi-sama. I, uh, secured this information earlier in an attempt to confirm some information Hokage-sama provided. I'd be insulting your clan to assume Hinata-hime was didn't know about the next Gennin test. So, I focused more on the basic information about her Jounin sensei, Yuuhi Kurenai."

Hiashi sat silently as he considered Naruto's words. The boy was certainly laying on the flattery. It was completely lacking in subtlety, but in a way that was helping Naruto's case. Naruto's tone was that of a person stating a basic fact of reality. Hiashi doubted Naruto was being completely sincere in his praise. If Hiashi was honest with himself, Uzumaki Naruto likely had little immediate interest in currying favor with any Hyūga other than his eldest daughter. Still, his attempts were a solid start. There were few individuals like Namikaze Minato, Aburame Shibi, or his beloved Hanae that were naturally gifted at diplomacy at this age. As flawed as the attempt was, Hiashi couldn't help but be impressed by the effort in Naruto's attempt.

"Very well," Hiashi acknowledged as he continued to stare Naruto in the eye. The boy was continuing to impress the Hyūga head. Hiashi would wager that had Hinata not been in the room, Naruto would have maintained perfect eye contact. 'It is impressive really,' Hiashi admitted. "I will provide time for you to share the information you have secured."

"Thank you, sir," Naruto replied as graciously as he could manage. "Hokage-sama informed one of my kage bunshin about the reason behind most of the Genin teams. Team Eight, Hinata-hime's team, is focused on recon. If I had to guess, a back-up idea for the team is ambush…anyway. Kurenai-sensei is a genjutsu specialist, but she's also a pretty famous scout."

Naruto paused to collect his thoughts and to control the desire to look at Hinata for some glimmer of approval. He also wanted to give Hiashi time to ask a question if he wanted. After it was clear that Hiashi wasn't going to ask a question, Naruto continued.

"She must be really good at genjutsu if she can combine recon and chakra techniques. Hokage-sama was pretty adamant that genjutsu coverage could be a danger for a recon team. Team Eight is made up of an awesome clan heiress and two clan heirs. Kurenai-sensei is also a pretty fresh Jounin. The file said six months. The file I…copied…says that Kurenai-sensei wants to be a Jounin sensei pretty bad."

Hiashi considered Naruto's words. He had done a bit of intelligence gathering of his own. The information Hiashi had uncovered confirmed Naruto's limited information. He decided to test Naruto further.

"Based on your information, Uzumaki-san, what is your best estimation of Yuuhi-san's assessment?"

Naruto was silent for a moment as he pondered. "It will be a reconnaissance test based on tracking. Kurenai-sensei will attempt to use genjutsu to confuse and misdirect the team. I remember from training with Hinata-hime that the Byakugan can see chakra. That ability makes using genjutsu against a Hyūga…pretty stupid. Kurenai-sensei's most likely idea would be a good one against all other teams. Using that idea against Hinata-hime…it's like trying to put out a fire with cooking oil."

The Hyūga Clan head was surprised by Naruto's assessment. It was refreshingly astute. Hiashi's favorite part of the explanation was the relieved and pleased smile that threatened to spill past the dam of Hinata's emotional control. He could not ignore a prickling protectiveness, though. Naruto's emphasis on Hinata's name and the honorific chosen bordered on all out worship. The fact that Hinata came dangerously close to swooning the first time made him want to chase Uzumaki Naruto out of the compound with the clan's ceremonial sword.

"An astute prediction," Hiashi verbalized. "A shinobi must always have contingencies. What if Yuuhi-san does not use this test?"

"Team Eight is designed for Recon and tracking. Kurenai-sensei's test might be based around observing other teams or people," Naruto suggested.

Hiashi nodded and turned his gaze to his daughter. He was very proud of her dedication to the social nuances of the situation. "Daughter." Hiashi noted that Hinata sat straighter and tore her attention away from Naruto. "In your meeting with Yuuhi-san, did she reveal any information about your exam?"

"No, Otou-sama," Hinata confirmed. "Kurenai-sensei only mentioned 'specialized observational training' after team introductions."

Hiashi steepled his fingers. "With the insight Uzumaki-san has provided, what is your best guess on the nature of the Gennin Test?"

"I suspect that Team Eight will be required to observe either other Gennin teams, specific individuals, or teams. There will likely be 'complications' to test our response to adverse mission conditions," Hinata concluded.

Naruto was impressed by Hinata's answer. He was even more impressed by Hiashi's subtle acknowledgment. It wasn't the over-the-top as Naruto would have liked. 'I'll have to chalk it up to the Hyūga being a bit different. Hiashi does seem to be a bit of a hardass.'

"Thank you for providing this information, Uzumaki-san. You have assisted the Hyūga Clan," Hiashi said with delicately selected phrases. Naruto did not bow as deeply as the social situation required, but the young man's smile made it clear that he accepted the words with an extraordinary amount of gratitude.

"I'm happy to help," Naruto responded earnestly. "I, uh, also heard that you wished to speak with me. I thought it would be a good idea to meet you as soon as possible…"

"A wise decision," Hiashi replied evenly. "Please sit."

"Thank you," Naruto accepted the offer eagerly. He had been standing for a long time and had begun to wonder if he'd ever get the chance to sit.

"Now, Uzumaki-san, I must inquire into your fuinjutsu training with my daughter…" Hiashi said in a tone of voice that sent a shiver of fear through the two young Gennin. The Hyūga Clan head was friendly…and smiling.

'Hanae, my love, you were right. This is going to be fun,' Hiashi agreed with his dearly departed wife.

Naruto left the Hyūga compound sometime later. The young man wasn't entirely sure how long Hiashi had quizzed him on various subjects. Hinata's dad had asked about fuinjutsu, his training with Hinata, the relationship Naruto had with the Hokage.

The Jinchūriki was also pretty sure Hiashi had asked if Naruto knew a good cobbler. Naruto wasn't sure why Hiashi would ask about pie, but honestly everything had sort of blurred together near the end.

'At least I didn't embarrass Hinata.' Naruto took solace in the thought. The relief that Hiashi didn't despise him was an added bonus. Naruto took a look in the general direction of Ichiraku before shifting his attention back home. He sighed for a few reasons. First, he had no idea what he wanted for dinner. Second, he was just relieved to be in a position to think about dinner.

And third… "You know, that isn't a bad effort."

The camouflage sheet dropped away. "I knew it, Uzumaki! You are definitely worthy of being my boss!"

"I'm going to be everyone's boss one day, kid. What makes you think you're special?" Naruto asked cheekily.

"You've got to start somewhere!" The boy half-demanded, half-pleaded. Naruto had to concede the point. "My granddad likes you, too!"

Naruto was pleased by the last bit, but he still had no clue who this kid actually was. "So…who are you?"

"Sarutobi Konohamaru," the boy proudly announced.

The Jinchūriki shrugged. "Last names don't mean anything."

"Finally! Finally, finally, finally!" Konohamaru shouted. "Someone who gets it! I don't want to be known just as a Sarutobi or 'The Third Hokage's Honorable Grandson!' I'm my own person! I'm going to be the next Hokage! People will have to recognize me as Konohamaru and not just someone related to my Granddad or Uncle Asuma!"

"I can understand that," Naruto quietly agreed. He knew better than anyone the need for acknowledgment and recognition. "Konohamaru, you're dead wrong about that last bit though."

The boy was drawn in by Naruto's initial tone. The sudden and drastic change caught him off guard. "Huh?"

"You'll have to be the Rokudaime. I've got dibs on Godaime."

Ebisu was just about to panic. The Honorable Grandson had evaded him for an unacceptable amount of time. It was unacceptable mainly because it cast doubt on Ebisu's competency. The unrestrained dressing down of Kuba Hachimiro had sent waves through many of the Tokubetsu Jounin. Many Tokubetsu Jounin were simply coasting on their cushy positions. The Hokage's stance had given numerous shinobi cause to fear for their position.

'Maybe I can spin this to be the result of my tutelage…' Ebisu desperately tried to find a positive spin on the situation.

"Eh, not bad for a fifteenth attempt," Ebisu heard Uzumaki Naruto announce. The 'Elite Tutor' paused to observe the meeting between the brat and the Honorable Grandson. "The Henge isn't just about looking like the target. You've got the basics down, but I can point out three mistakes without even really looking for them."

"Oh yeah? What would those be?" Another Naruto shouted back. Ebisu was forced to agree with Naruto. The Honorable Grandson had made several mistakes, but the overall attempt was solid for such a young student.

"You've got the whisker marks wrong. They don't end in a straight line. The orange in my jacket isn't that dark, but it does look pretty good. I'll have to find a jacket in that shade…Oh right…you made yourself too tall. Don't think about comparing yourself to me. Compare me to other people," Naruto explained.

'Accurate,' Ebisu conceded.

Konohamaru dispelled his transformation. Naruto and Ebisu noticed the young boy's exhaustion. "I'll get it this time!"

"Nope," Naruto cut him off. "Kid, you are about to collapse. Go home, get some food, and go to bed."

"But!"

Ebisu decided that it was the perfect time to make his entrance. "The…young man has a point."

Naruto caught Ebisu catching himself and fought back a grimace. The Tokubetsu Jounin simply continued, "Honorable Grandson, I can see that you are exhausted. It would not be wise to continue. In fact, it would be self-destructive. Taking what you believe to be a short-cut to success now would actually hinder your advancement."

"I can get it!" Konohamaru protested.

Naruto looked to Ebisu with an amused glint in his eye. The tutor raised an eyebrow curiously. The newly promoted Gennin grinned. "Yup, chakra exhaustion. That's all you'd be getting. I know I said guts and hard work are crucial, but there's a point where pushing your limits is dumb."

"The Uzumaki is correct," the Elite Tutor continued to shock both younger shinobi by agreeing with Naruto…again. "We can work more tomorrow. For now, please wait at the edge of the training ground. I will escort you home momentarily. I just need a…word with your friend."

Konohamaru nodded petulantly. He did, however, follow instructions. Ebisu and Naruto stared at each other for several moments. Neither man really had any idea how to approach the conversation.

Unsurprisingly, it was Naruto who broke the silence. "So, what 'word' do you need to have with me?"

"I misjudged you," Ebisu said without preamble or fluff.

"A lot of people tend to do that," Naruto responded with heated pride.

Ebisu shrugged in concession to the young man's point. "I will admit, that your burden has a part to play in my initial assessment." Ebisu paused to push his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "Very few who lived through that night will claim anything else. My…mindset was based off your vandalism sprees and your tendency to skip class."

Naruto could admit that Ebisu was being reasonable. He couldn't deny the Kyūbi's attack was a horrific night for Konoha. Naruto had also been a huge punk before picking up fuinjutsu. Naruto returned Ebisu's shrug with one of his own.

"I wish you would embrace education," Ebisu continued seamlessly. "Konoha's shinobi forces are taking notice of the skills and jutsu you have displayed, Uzumaki-san. If you had truly dedicated yourself…I shudder to think of the heights you would reach."

The boy was stunned into silence. The Elite Tutor gave Naruto a chance to respond, but the only word that could escape was a simple 'thank you'.

"Why did you break into the Academy today?" Ebisu asked. There was nothing approaching demanding or interrogating in the Special Jonin's tone. There was only genuine curiosity.

"To help Konoha!" Naruto's voice was steel: honed, sharp, and even refined. "The Old Man's team ideas are…mostly…really good. I'm going to be Hokage. This is how I start. I'm making sure every Gennin team has the best chance to pass. If Konoha is strong, the other villages won't try anything."

"Then I will help you as well. Hatake Kakashi is infamous for many reasons. One of those reasons is that he's never passed a team."

"T-That's…not good." Naruto felt a bead of sweat at the edge of his temple. "Never?"

"Never," Ebisu confirmed. The man wasn't sure which desire was the strongest in this conversation. Ebisu knew that he had a strong desire to reinforce his superiority over the Kyūbi's jailor. The boy was in danger of sliding into arrogance. Ebisu was doing him a service by nipping the young man's embryonic hubris in the bud. Naruto had also wounded Ebisu's pride due to the incident with the Hokage. Kuba Hachimiro's fate was almost constantly being talked about. The Hokage had made an example out of him and most of the Special Jonin were panicking. It was a chance to put the boy back in his place.

Still, the boy had potential. Ebisu had to make sure it was harnessed properly.

"What…what should I do?"

"The answer isn't what you should do. The answer is what you all should do." Ebisu turned to retrieve Konohamaru as he finished. Naruto silently watched the teacher and student exit the training ground. The gears in the young man's head were turning at a thousand RPM. A thrill of anticipation and fear powered the mental whirlwind.

Tomorrow was another chance for Naruto to make history. Tomorrow was another chance to prove to Konoha that he was Uzumaki Naruto and not the Kyūbi.

He couldn't wait. Moments like that were what the young man lived for.

Author's Note: Well, here's an update. I'm still pretty close to getting other chapters finished for some other fics. The real world (unfortunately) takes priority, especially considered I could possibly be required to move for work within the next month/month and a half.

Anyway, hope you enjoy it. I know some of you will be extremely disappointed in the team set up, but I have a plan. Trust me! If you need to discuss things, shoot me a PM if you don't mind spoilers. I do ask that you keep the faith. Let's just say, the time-skip-era journey will be rather...unique. Please review!
