ON A SCALE OF ONE TO TEN

From the driver's seat, Sam studied his brother's battered face. Beneath the blood and bruises, he could see too-pale skin dotted with beads of sweat. "On a scale of one to ten, how bad is it?"

Without turning his head, Dean breathed out, "Two."

"Dean..." Sam's growl was full of warning.

"Twelve."

Sam swallowed hard. That was off the charts for Dean.

"Hospital?"

"No."

"But..."

"No. No hosp..." Dean broke off with a gasp. A shudder tore through his body. "Uhh...ch-changed my mind. H-hospital's g-good idea."

Sam floored the gas pedal.
