First Meeting

Harry knocked on the door. He tapped his foot as he waited for it to open. When he heard the lock unlatch, he plastered a huge, a little bit fake, grin on his face. Hopefully, if he looked like a positive, happy person, the guy would choose him to be his new roommate.

His smile dropped when a girl opened the door.

Maybe it was the girlfriend?

The girl had curly brown hair and brown eyes. She looked at him oddly. "May I help you?"

"There was a flyer, advertising the need for a roommate?" he said, even though it sounded like a question. "Are you the girlfriend?"

She arched an eyebrow. "No, it's my apartment, and it was my flyer."

He sighed forlornly. Harry was ready to turn around and leave. No way would a female want a male roommate. She probably just forgot to say 'girls only' on the flyer. "Oh."

She surprised him by opening the door wider. "I'm Hermione. Come in."

"Wait, you still want to talk to me? I thought..."

"You thought I wanted a female roommate. If that's what I wanted, I would have said so on the flyer. I'm not the kind that forgets details like that. If I say yes to you, I am sure we can be adults about living together."

"Right. Adults," he agreed, but as his heartbeat seemed to speed up, he wasn't sure he'd be able to be Hermione's roommate without wanting more. They had only just met, and already he felt a stirring of something deep within him.

He wasn't a believer in love at first sight, but this was the closest he ever came to experiencing it.

He followed her into the apartment and looked around, amazed at the three bookshelves that dominated the main area. "So, I see you like to read?"

"Yep. I love it. As a kid, I always thought of my books as my best friends. Not many kids wanted to befriend a know-it-all bookworm. Books never said any mean words, though."

"I didn't have many friends growing up either, but that was because my bully of a cousin threatened to beat up anyone that was nice to me."

"Didn't your parents talk to your aunt and uncle about it?"

"My parents died in a car crash when I was a baby. I lived with my aunt and uncle."

"Oh."

Harry was silent for a moment and then awkwardly said, "Things got serious quickly."

Hermione smiled. "Oh, I never got your name."

"Harry Potter."

"Okay, Harry Potter, why are you looking for an apartment?"

"I still live with my aunt and uncle, but they're threatening to kick me out since my 18th birthday was just over a week ago. I can't afford to live by myself, though."

She nodded. "Do you have a job?"

"I'm attending college at the nearby university. My parents had set aside a trust fund for me that was strictly for my education and any expenses I had while attending school. I have a job at the campus' bookstore, and that should be enough for half of the bills."

"You can't use your trust fund for living expenses?"

"I can, but I want to make it last as long as possible, so I'm only going to dip into it if I absolutely have to."

She nodded. "You have a good head on your shoulders. I like that."

"Do you like it enough to offer me the room?"

"Well, normally, I'd have a more intense interview process for a potential roommate."

"I'm hearing a 'but,'" Harry hopefully said.

"But I have a good feeling about you. I can't explain it."

He stared into her eyes. "I think I'm experiencing the same good feeling."

Her tongue came out and licked her bottom lip. "Okay, we'll give it a try. See what happens. When can you move in?"

"The sooner I get out of the house, the better."

She held out her hand. "It looks like you've got a roommate."
