Please understand that this is AU and don't freak out. I really enjoyed writing it though.
Travis Stoll didn't like settling for less. All his life he'd worked hard getting what he wanted through thievery and persuasion. But you can't steal everything. As he and Connor grew up his little brother found romance and was happy, but Travis couldn't be. He'd fallen so hard so fast for a girl who'd never liked him. She had a boyfriend and they were happy. He wasn't. He found himself dating a girl who at one time meant something to him, but now he couldn't care less about. As he dated her he found himself watching the girl he loved. He'd spend nights awake thinking about her. When he slept he dreamed about her. It drove him insane. His brother tried to help him but he'd lash out. He became moody and frustrated. It hurt to look at her. He continued to date apathetically, and eventually ended up marring her. Connor got married as well, as did the girl and her boyfriend, but they were happy, Travis wasn't. Even as he became a husband he was heartsick. He stole for a living and didn't care who he hurt because of it. He was angry and defensive and envious of the boy who'd captured her heart before he got a chance to even try. Since they day he'd first seen her he thought she was amazing, and many years later he was furious he'd let his crush crush him. He couldn't love anyone else, he couldn't feel anything except the heartache, and the anger.
One day he came home and his wife was waiting for him. She told him she was pregnant. She was happy and hopeful he would be happy too. Travis said nothing. He glanced once at her stomach, nodded, and left the room. The next nine months were spent wondering why he couldn't be the father or her child. He was obligated to be supportive of his wife, but he was apathetic about things unrelated to the girl, now a lovely young woman who had children of her own.
The day Travis's daughter was born things felt different. The sound of her cries awoke Travis's dead soul. Holding her for the first time allowed him to feel love for someone other than the girl. He loved his daughter even if he couldn't love his wife. He held her close and turned to his wearied wife.
"Name her Piper." Only he knew why, but she could guess, and as he lovingly gazed at their daughter she wept.
Sorry its so short gut oh well.
