Chapter 1

"If you can promise me a way home, I'll keep on fighting."

Katarina waited for the moment to strike in the joint operation she was working on. It was a cruel thing to know and enjoy what you were about to see happen. It was a flash of steel and the sound of metal on bone that made her enjoy this part. It was sickening in all its gory pleasures that war gave her. Only in this case, it wasn't a real war.

Like lightning, a blur darted out the shadows and got behind the unsuspecting Annie. Katarina flashed into place, her knives going to work with the aid of the other person that joined her. In a flash so quick that the eye could barely trace, Annie fell lifeless to the cold earth, her stuffed bear flopping along the ground during her surprise encounter with the two.

Katarina shifted her gaze to her aid and flashed a victorious smile. The kill was cleanly her own, even if he assisted.

"Thanks."

Naruto Uzumaki offered a small smile before dashing back off into the river to continue his aid.

How long had it been since he ended up here?

Three years…?

Naruto had lost count of the time he'd spent in this world, Runeterra, what with its ongoing wars and political gambles happening all the time. It was always one war after another with Runeterra, only that it wasn't fought the way normal wars were fought. They were fought through a political battle of three on three or five on five. These battles were all funneled through a unique system called the League of Legends.

The League of Legends was created twenty years ago after unchecked magical wars threatened to destroy Runeterra. Life was already extremely hard with chaotic storms and volcanic eruptions, all caused by unchecked magic during the last set of Rune Wars. As a way of making sure that the world wasn't going to become some desolate place where nothing could live, the League of Legends acted as a way to settle quarrels created by other nations through their system of fighting.

This was where Naruto came in. He was a Champion of the League of Legends, someone who usually represented their city-state. These Champions would be controlled by Summoners representing a particular political allegiance would each call forth a Champion while the Champions lead mindless minions into battle that were generated by novice Summoners manipulating the Nexus, would fight to achieve the objective of the arena they fought in. The most common victory condition of a battle arena would be to destroy the opposing faction's Nexus. These arenas were collectively referred to as the Fields of Justice.

While all major political conflicts are being funneled through the League of Legends, physical conflicts between warring political entities were not completely eliminated. The most prime example would be the two great warring city-states of Demacia and Noxus. The League had decided to build the Institute of War right between the two warring city-states, stopping a good portion of their confrontations entirely. A few small military skirmishes still happen from time to time, though no one wanted to challenge the might of the League of Legends. No wise regent would be foolish enough to rail against a vast cabal of immensely powerful magicians, Summoners, and Champions.

Three years ago Naruto arrived to this world through an act that was a common, and banned, practice call Summoning. It worked in a near identical manner to the way his summoning worked, but the catch was that return was near impossible. Summoners try to find new and improved ways of fighting other Champions in the League by summoning others. Other Worldly creatures already resided in the League long before Naruto was summoned, which was part of the reason why Summoning was deemed illegal.

Each time you summoned someone or something from another part of the world or even a universe, you create a door. This door can be opened from the other side once it's been opened. In this case, when they summoned the creature, Cho'Gath, a door was created that opened his world, the Void, to their own; though supposedly the door had been opened years prior to his appearance.

Because the threat the 'door' had on their world, summonings became illegal and anyone caught doing it would be forced to stand for their crimes. But if the door was opened and something came through, that person or thing would then be given a choice: Stay and fight with the League of Legends, or be detained while they find a way to send you home. Nothing that came through the act of summoning was allowed to leave without either joining the League or being detained until a way for them to get back was created.

Naruto opted for the way home and to continue his training so that when he returned home, he could show that his fighting prowess hadn't diminished at all. To ensure that this, he joined the League of Legends to fight and continue his training and gain a new edge when it came to fighting. Fighting other people or creatures inside the League gave one a unique aspect to fighting. It was easy to fight against other humans. But when you fought against something like Cho'Gath or any other Voidborn, it gave you a unique advantage to knowing how to fight other things and how to go about fighting your own kind as well.

Dressed in a orange hakama with brown triangle-leaf markings sewn in, orange shin guards and sandals, a large brown cloth belt to hold his pants up, and a skin tight orange sleeveless shirt, Naruto dashed as quickly as his legs would allow as he grabbed his knives from the small of his back where he kept them in preparation for the next attack.

His targets would be ready, no doubt made aware by the Summoners that controlled them.

Unlike most Champions that represented a city-state, Naruto was among the few to act with an unaffiliated status, even if his home was in Ionia. This meant he held no allegiance to any city-state, granting him some friends in odd places.

His team only consisted of one friend, that being Katarina, the Sinister Blade of Noxus. Though Katarina would deny their friendship, he saw her as a friend because she was the one to give him the knives when he ran out of kunai all those years ago. It was the small things that really mattered to him, even if she wasn't always around. His team consisted of Katarina, Caitlyn, General Darius, and Sona. The other team consisted of Jax, Annie, Varus, Riven, and Nasus. So far they were winning, but Naruto wasn't counting on it lasting long. The Summoner in control of him had times where he couldn't pull his act together and wanted him to go off on his own to push the other lanes while the others retreated without backup. More than once Naruto had fought against the whims of the man or woman in control of him.

Crouching down as low to the ground as he could, he snuck up on the tall form of Nasus. The giant dog creature was easily the tallest Champion to date. Naruto knew that Nasus was strong and could take quick attacks like his kind without really flinching. His magic allowed him to get even bigger and kick up magical storms that drained the life right out of you. Plus his staff hurt a lot if he imbued it with his magic.

Darius waited patiently as the minions mowed each other down without cause or concern for their own life. Nasus pulled back, waited, looked, and then continued his slaughter of the opposing minions without a second thought. Darius jumped forward, his weapon cleaving through flesh and armor. Naruto dashed once he started. Nasus roared as his body was hacked up, but the giant dog man stood his ground and rose to new heights as his magic took over his form. No doubt he was asking for aid from his allies as a powerful voice whispered that he needed to hurry along and then retreat.

Naruto fought through the magical storm, slicing and kicking and punching at the giant of a beast. Darius wavered in front of him, dropped to a knee, looked up, and saw the butt of the staff come crashing down on his skull, caving it in with great ease. Naruto growled at the loss of a teammate. Blazing with determination, he hacked faster, cut deeper, and hit harder as he watched Nasus slowly turn to contend with him. His movements became sluggish and his knees shook. Naruto delivered the final blow when the giant fell to his knees. Nasus's head rolled along the ground then his body disappeared in a blue light that took his corpse away to repair it and allow him to live again.

Making all haste, Naruto ran towards the tower and stopped in its shadow, his head nearly between his legs as he tried to catch his breath and wait for his body to heal up for the next fight.

Slicing air filled his senses and Naruto lurched backwards, avoiding a well-placed arrow that would have pierced his skull had he not moved. Rolling backwards and springing up, Varus appeared from the shadows with his new arrow ready. He fired it and it struck the tower. Naruto cursed his luck. The tower wasn't going to offer much protection from Varus. It was nearly broken as it was. A few well-placed hits from just about anything would bring it down without a problem.

Varus took aim at the tower instead of the blond and brought it down, thus giving him a chance to renew his attack on the whisker faced young man. Naruto grumbled a low curse as he avoided the onslaught of arrows from the archer. His Summoner forced him to move awkwardly as he dodged and weaved through the shots until he was safely away from him at their secondary defense tower. Naruto ran back normally from that point towards his base to aid his recovery. He collapsed on the steps and let the healing energies wash over him, rapidly replenishing his strength and allowed him to breathe a little easier.

Fully rested, he returned the Fields of Justice to finish their bout.

"That wasn't fun at all."

Naruto cracked his neck. They won. Katarina did poorly though. It would reflect in the eyes of Noxus High Command, even if her Summoner was the reason for her low kill rate.

"We won." Naruto pointed out, fidgeting with his new fingerless gloves. They came all the way up to his bicep. It was something he got from Kennen. They came with metal sewn onto the back of the hand just like how Konoha did their gloves. Of course for his own use these also came with metal wrappings for his forearms, which was where he was putting the new stiletto knives he got from Katarina in celebration of their win together.

It was part of their ongoing friendship. If Naruto was paired with her and he cost her the victory, he had to do something or get her something to make up for it. If they won, she would give him more knives since her kind weren't cheap and his line of work was rather slow moving. Not many people wanted no-name mercenaries when you could hire someone from one of the more popular city-states. Even being a member of the League of Legends didn't grant him a lot of business, despite having a pretty good win record. Most people just saw it as the Summoner controlling him or anyone else and the fighter doing what they were told.

Sadly, it wasn't like that. The Summoner could force a person to go somewhere if they felt it was a better option than the other one. Naruto mostly fought with only minor aid from the Summoners he got stuck with. A lot of them liked the idea of having him under their control because he was so easy to use. He hardly fought back unless it was something stupid like taking a tower while his teammates or he got slaughtered by the opposing team.

"Yes. I'm fully aware," she snapped, unhappy at the moment. "I'm just stressed out today."

"Why?"

Katarina gave him a hard glare. It was hard to take him for a serious killer when he gave her a goofy smile or looked at her with his wide blue eyes. It was almost like there were two sides to him. Sort of like how Teemo was. Both were pretty happy go lucky until you got them in a fight. Then it was just a scary sight to see, one because Teemo was easily the most hated person in the League, and two because Naruto was a pretty vicious fighter when you got him angry enough to act without thinking. It was a shame Naruto wasn't taking sides with anyone city-state or Katarina would have tried to recruit him. His minor work he did with them was more than enough in the eyes of Noxus High Command though.

"Political issues," she explained, waving the comment off and trying to be happy about her victory.

"The political issue with Kalamanda, you mean?"

She nodded wearily.

There wasn't a soul alive that didn't know about that place right now. A few weeks ago it suddenly came to life as the greatest city available when they stumbled upon a treasure-trove of gems and two Nexus. Unfortunately for Kalamanda, they were ill equipped to properly handle the new fortune they were given, and were now looking for a partner to help them mine. Each city-state was fighting a political war for the rights to the second mine. It was pretty much down to Noxus and Demacia at the moment.

"That sucks," Naruto said, crossing his arms over his chest. Katarina arched a thin brow at his choice of words. "Well, that's none of my business. I could care less with what happens on the other side of the world. I'm only interested in getting back home."

"What if it could grant you the power to go back home?" she asked, her playful smile coming to life.

Naruto looked away. Her smiles like that gave him the creeps. It was like she was a cat and he was a mouse. She just wanted to play with him like a cat would with a wounded mouse. Anytime he brought up the conversation of returning home she got this way. It was like her idea of his world was a joke. She couldn't grasp the concept that his world was very real and that its power was greater than this place, despite seeing creatures from the Void or other people being summoned from other worlds. Kayle and Morgana came from an entirely different world as well, but they joined for their own selfish reasons.

Katarina leaned forward, resting her chin on her fist as she waited for his answer.

"I'd look into it," he finally admitted. "But the Council hasn't said anything about it being a way home. They've studied it already." Katarina arched a thin brow. Naruto missed her look of curiosity and continued. "They told me that it won't give me a way back home. The two Nexus aren't capable of that. It's only used as a power source… At least that's what I think they told me. I wasn't really paying attention when they broke the news to me. I just tuned them out and went back to my room for some sleep."

The Noxus Assassin nodded while mentally scolding herself. For as long as she'd known him, which wasn't very long, Naruto wasn't the type to pay rapt attention to anything that didn't involve a way for him to get back home. He did, however, usually spill anything else that came to mind about the world so far. Like the fact that League had studied the two Nexus without clearance. Unless they were granted it, what they did was illegal. It would be another mark on their agenda as far as Katarina was concerned.

"When are you up for taking another job?" She shifted the topic.

Naruto scratched at his hair for a moment. He needed to get it cut. Three years and he still hadn't done it. It was getting rather long and he was starting to feel a little girly. "I can take one soon. I have another one to take care before I can do anything else." Naruto grabbed a piece of ice from his cup, popped it in his mouth, and crunched on it. "The League wants me to investigate something in the Kumungu Jungle soon."

"Why send you out to that death trap?"

Naruto shrugged. He hadn't been told why he was being sent just yet. All he knew was that they wanted him to go there. Naruto wouldn't put it past them to be sending him out there to find out what Ezreal was up to. They cared a bit too much for the explorer for some reason.

Katarina tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and sighed. "You never ask why, do you?"

"I never ask because they tell me before I leave." Naruto sat deeper into the chair. "I'm sure that's probably got something to do with Ezreal."

"He's out there again?" Katarina arched a thin brow. It wasn't like she kept up with the day to day things with that blond. He wasn't even a real champion of the League. He just got summoned randomly because the magical amulet he had. But still it was a wonder as to why the League would even consider sending him out after Ezreal to begin with. "You should stop by our house sometime soon."

"Why? So you can tell me I didn't sneak in."

"You never do."

Naruto gave her a flat look. He honestly did sneak into her house. She just never believed him because he was noisy, clumsy, and not she thought a ninja was. Naruto didn't even dress the part. Of course he often flipped it back on her by saying she didn't fit the assassin role either. Talon was more assassin like than she was.

"I'll see you around." Katarina slinked off, popping her hips as she walked. Naruto arched a thin brow in question to her antics before he decided to leave. He had to get to head out to finish his job. Hopefully this would be last the last night he was needed for a security detail.
