Kaia's First Date

"I don't like this one bit," Nicholas voiced his opinion on the matter. "She's too young to be going out on a date."

"I agree," Jason said. "Who decided that she could date when she turned sixteen?"

"Diana," Dick revealed. "Bruce only agreed under threat of physical harm."

"Should have made it twenty-one," Tim decided.

"Why isn't this date being chaperoned?" Damian demanded to know. "They should at least have a chaperone."

"Diana told her she could go out with him," Dick said. "They're going to dinner and a movie—no adults."

"I think we should follow them…set up surveillance to make sure he doesn't try anything," Jason suggested.

"You are not going to follow Kaia anywhere," Diana stated as she entered the room, her stern gaze telling them she meant business. "Kaia is sixteen and deserves the chance to prove herself."

"I can't believe you're not worried about your daughter," Damian countered with a frown.

"I trust Kaia," she told him. "She has a good head on her shoulders. We've trained her well and she has many of my gifts. She's more than capable of taking care of herself."

"You know Bruce is not going to handle this well," Dick reminded her.

"He's been really irritable the last few days," Damian commented. "I've been trying to avoid him at all cost."

"I'm well aware of his paranoia and obsessive need to protect his loved ones," she replied. "That is why I sent him out to pick up dinner tonight. You're all welcome to join us if you want to."

"Might as well," Jason decided. "Artemis went to Themyscira for a few days. I'm on my own."

"Donna and Cassie took Conner and Claire to an amusement park for the day, so I get to fend for myself," Dick volunteered.

"I'm in too," Damian said. "Raven has monitor duty. Besides, I'm not going anywhere while my sister is out on a date with that…that…boy."

"That boy is Liam Queen," Diana pointed out. "He comes from a very good family and his parents have been close friends of ours for years."

"I don't know if I trust him," Nicholas announced.

"He's one of your best friends," Damian reminded him with a frown.

"Sure, he's one of my best friends, but that doesn't necessarily mean I trust him going out with my sister."

Diana rolled her eyes as she texted Bruce to let him know that he needed to pick up more food for dinner. "You guys are being absolutely ridiculous," she told them with a scowl. "Liam is a genuinely nice young man. Besides, why would he try anything knowing Kaia could break him in two?"

"I think we need to put this date off for at least another month," Nicholas declared, his voice broking no room for argument. "She's just not ready yet. She needs more intensive training before she can go out with Liam."

"Nicholas, your father and I have already discussed this," Diana stated. "We decided that you and your sister could start dating when you turned sixteen. We let you go out on dates when you turned sixteen. It's only fair to give Kaia the same opportunity."

Nicholas's shoulders sunk in defeat, remembering his first date. As soon as he had turned sixteen, he'd immediately called Lara Kent for a date. It was only after an intense meeting with Clark Kent that had he been allowed to take her out. They'd been together ever since then…well, except for that two-month break.

They'd broken up for a brief time during which he'd dated Bella Stewart. It turned out they were better off as good friends than a romantic couple. Thankfully, he'd gotten back with Lara soon after that. He wasn't going to let her go ever again.

"I still don't like this," Jason groused, flopping into a nearby chair. "Someone should go along just to make sure she's okay."

"You boys are just going to have to come to terms with the fact that Kaia isn't a little girl anymore," Diana pointed out with a gentler tone. "I know you're all very protective of her, but she's becoming a young woman. This is her chance to prove she deserves the trust that we've placed in her. Let her spread her wings a little and I promise you she'll shine like the sun."

"You're right, mom," Tim uttered with a disheartened sigh. "It's just really hard letting her go. It's like she doesn't need us anymore."

Diana placed her hand on Tim's shoulder, squeezing it gently. "Kaia will always need her brothers," she assured him.

"I wish Bruce would hurry," Jason griped. "I'm starving."

"You just want him to hurry so you can follow Kaia and Liam," Dick knowingly revealed.

"Yah…so," Jason responded with a shrug of a shoulder. "I don't particularly like to do surveillance on an empty stomach."

"You are not going," Diana adamantly stated. "None of you are. Do you hear me?"

All of them muttered or grumbled various disheartened forms of agreement as Kaia entered the entertainment room. "Well, how do I look?" Kaia asked, doing a little twirl. She was wearing a simple lavender sundress and sandals. "Do you think Liam will like my new dress?"

"You look beautiful, Kaia," Diana told her, kissing her on the forehead. "He won't be able to take his eyes off of you."

"Miss Kaia, you look positively charming," Alfred complimented her as he walked into the room.

"Thank you, Pappoús," she replied, kissing him on the cheek. "I'm so excited. I've been dying for Liam to ask me out."

"Don't you think you might want to change into jeans and a baggy sweatshirt?" Nicholas suggested. "I hear it's the new trend in dating apparel."

Kaia looked down at her dress, looking up at him in bewilderment. "Nick, it's eighty-five degrees outside," she told him. "I'd sweat to death."

"Maybe you should wear a sweater just in case," Tim advised.

"Do you seriously think I don't look nice?" Kaia asked, growing worried.

"Don't listen to them, Kai," Diana said, her arm slipping around her shoulders as she began to steer her daughter towards the doorway. The doorbell rang at that moment, alerting them to the fact her date was here.

"It sounds like Mister Queen is here," Alfred guessed as he headed towards the door.

"I'll get it!" All five boys yelled at the same time as they attempted to race out of the room like a herd of buffalo.

Diana spun on her heel, blocking the doorway as she put her arm straight out before her with her hand up. "Back!" she ordered with a glare that caused all of them to instantly freeze in place. "Sit down!"

They sheepishly turned back around, retaking their respective seats once more with audible curses. Diana shook her head in exasperation. "You're all as bad as your father."

"At least we come by it honestly," Nick muttered as he dropped onto the couch.

"What did I do?" Bruce asked as he came up behind her.

Diana's eyes fell closed as she prayed to Hera for an extra dose of patience. "What are you doing back so soon?" she asked as she turned towards her husband.

"I know what you are up to, princes," Bruce revealed with a narrowed gaze. "I called ahead and placed the order for dinner so it would be ready for pickup when I arrived."

"But did you get enough for the boys?" she asked.

"Who do you think made sure they were all here tonight?" he informed her with a smug smirk.

"You're all going to be the death of me," Diana decided, hands fisted at her sides. "I'm going to go greet Liam. None of you are allowed to come with me."

"I'm coming, princess," Bruce adamantly stated. "I'm her father. I have every right to meet this boy."

"Bruce, you've known him since the day he was born!" Diana nearly cried. "He spent a good portion of his childhood here at the manor playing with our children!"

"Still, you can never be too careful," he stubbornly said, turning on his heel. "He might have changed in the last month."

Diana followed him to the foyer to find Kaia and Liam talking with Alfred. "Do not embarrass our daughter, Bruce Wayne, or I'll banish you to sleep on the couch," Diana hissed in a threatening tone.

"I don't plan on it," he insisted. "I just want to get a few things straight before they leave."

Liam looked up to see Bruce and Diana approaching. He straightened his shoulders, doing his best to appear poised and confident despite how nervous he was at that moment. "Good evening, Mister and Missus Wayne," he formally greeted them, handing a small bouquet of flowers to Diana.

"Thank you, Liam," Diana responded as she took the flowers. "You know you can call us Bruce and Diana."

"Ah, Liam, we need to talk," Bruce said.

"Daddy," Kaia uttered in a threatening tone, her eyes silently pleading with him. "We really need to leave."

"I was just going to say don't lay a finger on her and have her home by ten o'clock," Bruce replied, pointing over his shoulder with his thumb. "Or you won't just have me to deal with."

Liam gulped as he looked past Bruce at the five muscular brothers standing shoulder to shoulder with their arms crossed against their equally muscular chests. Dark scowls were fixed on each of their faces. "I…I…swear," Liam stuttered. "We're just going to dinner and a movie…nothing more."

"Good…keep it that way," Bruce said with a smile that was anything but pleasant. It was almost sadistic in a way that caused an icy chill to race up Liam's spine.

Kaia huffed in annoyance as she glared daggers at her family. She slipped her arm around Liam's, receiving a low growl from her father. "Ignore them, Liam," she told him. "They're being stupid tonight. Let's go."

"Stupid?" Jason repeated, looking at Tim in stunned disbelief. "Did she just call us stupid?"

"You just embarrassed her," Diana snapped. "What am I going to do with all of you?"

"Hurry up and eat, boys," Bruce told them, determination alight in his eyes. "We've got work to do tonight."

Bruce was brought to an abrupt stop when Diana's hand clamped down on his arm with a vice-like grip. "None of you are leaving this house," she loudly proclaimed. "Kaia has never given us any cause for worry, and she won't start tonight."

"But Diana…" Bruce began.

"Boys, go ahead and eat," she said. "I need to talk to your father for a moment."

"Ut-oh," Jason uttered with a chuckle as he turned on his heel. "Someone is in big trouble."

"Yah, I know that tone," Nick agreed with a shudder. "It's never good when mom's mad."

The five brothers took off for the kitchen, abandoning Bruce and leaving him with an angry wife whose patience had completely run out. "Diana…" he grumbled only to be abruptly silenced with her finger on his lips.

"I'm going to talk and you're going to listen," she stated in no uncertain terms, poking him in the chest and backing him against the nearest wall. "We promised Kaia she could start dating when she turned sixteen. She has never given us any cause to be concerned, right?"

"I know, but—"

"Ah!" she interrupted him, placing her finger back on his lips. "Kaia has been excited about this date all week. We don't want to do anything to ruin this special night for her, right?"

Bruce's shoulders fell in defeat. "Right," he reluctantly agreed.

"We want her first date to be memorable in a good way and not in an embarrassing, complete disaster kind of way, right?"

"Right," he said with huff of irritation as he averted his eyes.

"Because showing up on her date would hurt her, right?"

"Right," he muttered as he lowered his head like a whipped puppy.

"And hurting her is the last thing that we would ever want to do to her, right?"

"Yah," he softly murmured, feeling himself surrendering to the logic being presented to him. He hated it when she was right, and she was right more often than not.

"We gave Nicholas the exact same privilege when he turned sixteen," she pointed out. "Kaia deserves the same opportunity that we gave him, right?"

"I know," he whispered.

"We all love her and are protective of her, but she's strong and she knows what she's doing," she remined him. "She has your intellect and my gifts. Liam doesn't stand a chance even if he did try to make a move on her."

The corner of Bruce's lips ticked up with great pride as his blue eyes brightened. "That's true," he agreed with a chuckle. "She also has your temper. She'd take his head clean off his shoulders if he tried anything."

"Right," she gently murmured with a loving smile as hers arms slipped around his neck. "I love you, Bruce…and I love that you love our children so much."

He tilted his head, kissing her deeply for several long moments. "I love you too, Diana," he replied as his arms wrapped around her waist. "Do you think I'll survive this?"

"You will as long as you have me to keep you in line," she lightly teased.

"You do keep me from losing my head and doing something foolish," he granted her, sighing heavily as his expression grew stoic. "She's growing up so fast. I don't know if I can handle it."

"If you try to smother her and stalk her on her date, she'll end up pushing you away and damaging the close relationship you two share."

Bruce's forehead came to rest against hers as he squeezed his eyes closed against the horrifying thought. "I don't want that to ever happen. It would kill me."

"I know you don't," she replied. "That's why you need to remember that Kaia will love you even more for trusting her, Bruce. It'll bring you two even closer together."

"I don't know what I'd do without you," he uttered with a sigh of contentment.

"Good thing you never have to find out," she said with a grin, her lips claiming his in a kiss.

"You know," he murmured. "I think I might need you to distract me later after dinner…you know make sure that I don't try to sneak out of the house."

Her lips curled into a grin. "I think I can definitely keep you occupied until Kaia comes home."

"It's a date, princess," he whispered against her lips before kissing her once more.
