A Selfie With Drew

"And the winner of Sunyshore City Contest is Drew Hayden!"

May sighed. "Well, I guess that's that," she said to no one in particular.

"Glaceon," Glaceon sounded sorry.

"Oh, Glaceon. You were amazing out there. We'll win next time for sure," she coaxed her with a gentle smile and then helped Glaceon return to her Pokeball. She stole a glance at Drew who was also looking at her. She smiled and he smiled back in return.

That smile, though.

She was busy packing her stuff when she saw Drew approaching her.

"You were great!" She said cheerfully, zipping her bag.

"Thanks. That was a tough battle for sure," he commented as he stuffed his hands in his pockets.

"You can't expect any less from me," she teased.

"But I defeated you," he retorted.

"No big deal. I'm pretty sure the next time we meet, I'll win," she said, confidently.

"We'll see about that," he chuckled and looked away. "Well, wanna go grab something to drink?"

May looked at him strangely. This was not the first time he had offered, but still it surprised her. Not that she was rejecting his offer or anything. After all, it was always fun to spend time with him.

"Sure, why not?" She smiled.

Soon, they were seated across each other in a small cafe, which was almost empty at the moment, save for those two customers who were busy talking and hadn't really noticed them. They had already ordered their drinks. In the meanwhile, May pulled out her PokeNav and activated the front camera as she examined herself carefully. She was busy fixing her bangs when she felt Drew's gaze boring a hole into her. She glanced up to see him watching her with one eyebrow raised.

"What? You didn't give me a chance to fix my hair," she complained, shrugging lightly.

"Yeah, because that wasn't necessary," he stated, plainly.

Her mouth fell open, "Well, it is! Girls have to care about how they look."

"No one's gonna judge you here about how you look," Drew rolled his eyes, leaning his elbow on the table.

She sighed and got back to her previous work, ignoring him, when suddenly an idea popped into her mind.

"Hey, let's take a selfie together, what do you say?" She offered cheerfully.

"Huh?" Drew stared at her incredulously as he raised his eyebrow but before May could respond, the waiter intruded.

"Here are your drinks," he said as he set their drinks on the table.

"Is there anything else that you need?" The waiter asked in a polite manner.

"No, thank you," Drew replied.

"Enjoy your time," he smiled and left their table.

They both reached for their drinks and took a sip. When May spoke again,

"I was saying something."

"About what?" He asked, knowing well.

"About the selfie."

He sighed. She was serious. "Sorry, but no."

She frowned, "Why not?"

"Just enjoy your coffee, May," he appeared agitated.

"I'm asking for a selfie, Drew! What's the big-"

"I said no," he interrupted, trying to finish the conversation.

"And that's what I'm asking, why not?" She questioned, confused why Drew would say no to a selfie.

"I'm not a fan of photography, May and you know it," he clarified.

May sweat-dropped. He must be joking. He had to.

"Oh please, Drew! You were there when we took a group photo of ourselves back in Unova," she commented dryly.

"Do you, by any chance, happen to remember that you-" he pointed a finger towards her, "-and Solidad were the ones who dragged me there?"

May smiled sheepishly as she scratched her neck, "Well, you were acting so stubborn. So we had to force you to take a picture with us." She paused, then added, "But it's not like we don't have pictures of ourselves together. I mean we have taken, on occasions."

He raised his eyebrow. "Yeah," he hesitated, "but they were not selfies."

May rolled her eyes at his hesitation. Then like, reality dawned on her. Oh! It was all because of his stupid man-pride.

Stupid Drew!

"And not to mention that you have your pictures in magazines as well," she insisted.

"Yeah, I know. Again, they're not selfies," he said bitterly.

"I don't see why we can't have a selfie together," she said as she folded her arms across her chest and pouted.

"Desperate much, I see. Can't resist my charms, Maple?" He smirked, twisting the tables onto her.

"Shut up, Hayden!" She said, a little flustered. "Its just.., I have selfies with almost all of my friends like, Dawn, Solidad, Brock, Ash, Misty, Zoey, Iris, hehe, even
I have one with Barry and Kenny. You see, but I.. don't have one with you, considering you're my.."

She paused, not knowing what to say. What was the appropriate word that described their relationship?

Rival? Friend? Best friend? Crush?

She mentally slapped herself. Drew was watching her with an amused expression, waiting for her to finish.

"..you're my very first rival and kinda best friend, so isn't that a good reason for us to have a selfie?" She finished foolishly. She felt really nervous at that very moment.

Drew's eyes flickered with mischievous glint. He could see how nervous she was, and the blush that was craning up her neck. She won't admit but Drew knew that she liked him. It was obvious through her actions and now was one of them.

"You forgot someone, though," he said coolly as he raised his drink and took a sip.

"Huh?" May frowned. "Did I?" Well, it was obvious that she didn't name all of her selfie partners (because there were a lot more), but still, it must be someone important if Drew was reminding her.

"Yeah," he nodded, "you forgot Harley." He smirked again. Here she goes.

"What?" She choked on her drink, her eyes narrowed. Was it really Drew reminding her of Harley?

"I thought you were the last person to ever remind me of Harley," she exclaimed.

"It's not a big deal. You kinda forgot him," he shrugged nonchalantly.

May stared at him, her brows knitted together. She then sighed as she leaned her chin on her palm, "Look Drew, if you really think that keeping my mind off that selfie with bringing up no other than Harley in this conversation, then I'm sorry to say that it won't do a thing."

He said nothing in response. Instead, he chose to stare at her with an expression, on which May couldn't quite put her finger on. But no way she was going to give up.

She stood up. "You know what? It really won't hurt to take a selfie with me. I know you're hesitating and stuff, but there aren't many people here," she said looking around. "No one's gonna judge you," She parroted his earlier remark.

"But-"

May didn't let him speak, as she continued, "Besides, I'm not asking you to make some funny faces or anything, you just have to smile, not smirk, and it's done."

He leaned back in his chair as he ran a hand through his hair and exhaled all the air at once, considering the offer. He didn't want to reject the offer on her face, especially when she was insisting too much. But saying yes would..

May pulled up her chair beside Drew's and waited for his response.

Arceus! Why in the world was her rival so stubborn?

She tapped her foot on the floor as she desperately waited for an answer. Finally, after what felt like forever, he spoke up.

"Fine," he paused and looked at May who had a big grin framing her face, then added, only to see her smile falter a bit, "but on one condition, though."

"Name it."

"Only one."

May thought for a while but didn't say anything and smiled. She was okay with one. She sat beside him, pulled herself closer to him and held onto his arm which caught Drew off-guard. He opened his mouth to say something but then he closed it. He didn't mind that, after all. Infact, making of a smile could be seen on his face.

But he doubted that May knew her actions because she was way too happy. Well, that made him happy too, somehow.

"Smile, Drew," he averted his gaze from her and looked to the front where May had raised her Pokenav in the air and the front camera was already activated.

"You know, you can take only one selfie, right?" He reminded her again in a mocking tone.

"I know, Drew. Just smile. And don't even dare to ruin this one and only selfie," May said dryly and rolled her eyes.

"Don't worry. I won't," he assured her.

She smiled again and he tried to throw that flashing smile of his but what came out was a half-smile and half-smirk. His mind was still stuck onto the fact that May was holding onto his arm as her whole life depended on it. And then he saw May tapping the screen.

At last. This selfie thing was over. He shouldn't have made a fuss about that. He looked at the screen and smiled. The picture was indeed good.

"It's the best," May looked at him, her eyes beaming with happiness, "though I'm unable to figure out whether you are smiling or smirking. But it's good, no doubt."

"Of course it is. After all, it was me you were taking a selfie with," he said, flipping his hair in that charming manner.

"Yeah right," she rolled her eyes. "Thanks to me who got you to do this," she teased him and nudged him in the arm.

"Just admit it, May. You wanted to be close to me and you can't deny that because, as a matter of fact, you were holding onto my arm really tight, like you'd never let go of me," Drew said, grinning slyly.

"Eh?" She looked down at the picture again, blushing hard. "What? I really did that? No way. This selfie is ruined," she exclaimed, hand over her mouth and eyes narrowed.

"To tell the truth, this is the best selfie of my life," he declared with a satisfied smirk on his face.

Just so you know, this idea had me on the edge. Hope you enjoyed it. Pardon me for any grammatical mistakes, English is not my first language.

A review would be nice.
