Chapter 142: The Shade

As they said they would, Omnimon, EmperorGreymon, and Gallantmon all went after Boltboutamon. The copy of the demon Digimon eagerly flew forward to engage them in battle as all three lashed out with their swords.

Three of Boltboutamon's arms flew out, each one catching a blade and successfully held them back. A mocking snicker escaped him as he cocked his head to the side in a near ninety-degree angle. "The three strongest members of your group attacking me together. I would feel honored if this weren't such child's play to me."

He shoved the three of them back, then whipped out his guns, shooting all three of them at the same time with his Baleful Draw attack. Both Omnimon and Gallantmon dodged the bullets flying at them while EmperorGreymon batted his away and then flew at the demon Digimon with his Soaring Flame Edge. Boltboutamon easily blocked the attack with his bladed tail. He used his Curtain Call, flicking his finger to send out a shockwave that knocked EmperorGreymon back, then used his Final Act, sticking his hand through a portal so that a giant version of it came out another and grabbed the dragon Digimon.

"Gungnir!" Gallantmon cried, turning one of his swords of light into a spear and throwing it at the demon Digimon.

Boltboutamon used his Forcefield Creation to create a barrier, which blocked the attack. Omnimon fired his Supreme Cannon as well, but this too failed to penetrate the barrier.

"You'll have to do better than that," Boltboutamon told them. "Dark Rostrum!"

He fired his gun at the ground, the bullet causing a magic circle to appear where it struck. A tornado rose out of the circle, coming up beneath the two knight Digimon and trapping them both. Boltboutamon chuckled as his giant hand holding EmperorGreymon suddenly slammed the dragon Digimon to the ground. He then retracted his hand before taking out one of his rapiers and telepathically sent it flying down to bury into EmperorGreymon's back, causing the dragon Digimon to cry out.

"Sword of Ruin!" Omnimon cried, setting the sky ablaze as he cut through the tornado, freeing him and Gallantmon. His fellow knight Digimon then aimed his spear of light at Boltboutamon and unleashed his Final Justice, the attack shattering the barrier surrounding him.

"Ultimate Uppercut!" Omnimon cried, flying towards the demon Digimon and stabbing with his sword.

Boltboutamon clapped his hands together, catching the blade. Omnimon brought up his cannon to fire, but one of Boltboutamon's extra hands knocked it away. His fourth hand fired his Dark Spirit attack at Omnimon, shoving a ball of darkness at him, blasting him away.

Gallantmon flew in to take his place. Wielding two swords of light, he used his Dash Blutgang, slashing at Boltboutamon. The demon Digimon avoided the swipe from both blades, them used his Final Act, sticking all four arms into portals that popped out around Gallantmon, allowing him to grab the knight Digimon's arms and legs.

"Come on," Boltboutamon taunted. "The three of you are strong, and I'm just a copy. One good hit should be all it would take to destroy me."

As he yanked on Gallantmon's limbs, threatening to tear them out, EmperorGreymon forced himself to stand up, a difficult feat considering Boltboutamon's rapier had him literally pinned to the ground down to the hilt. "Oh, we plan to get that attack in."

Reaching behind his back, he pulled the sword out, hissing in pain as he did so. He took a moment to compose himself, then flew back up to the battle. Boltboutamon glanced at him, sneered, then used his Pernicious Waltz. Several more rapiers appeared and flew towards EmperorGreymon.

The dragon Digimon used his Purgatory Sword Dance to knock the blades away. He swiped at Boltboutamon when he reached him, but the demon Digimon recreated his barrier to block the attack. He did release Gallantmon though, and pulled his hands back through the portals and reached out to grab EmperorGreymon. He used his Absorption attack and began to suck up the dragon Digimon's energy. He didn't get much though as Omnimon came at him again, swiping with his Dashing Grey Sword.

Boltboutamon released EmperorGreymon and pulled back to avoid the attack. His three opponents all pointed their swords at him, and Boltboutamon chuckled.

"You think you can take me?" He put one of his four hands behind him as rapiers appeared in his other three. "I can take you with one hand behind my back."

They knew he wasn't bluffing, but moved in to attack all the same, the demon Digimon laughing all the while.

Meanwhile, in the distance, OmniShoutmon was engaged in battle with AxeKnightmon. Despite only being and Ultimate, the knight Digimon was one of those rare, unique Digimon who was much stronger than he should be, and thus had no problem facing off against a Mega. OmniShoutmon was wary of this as AxeKnightmon came at him with his giant double-ended spear.

"Treason Vortex!" AxeKnightmon cried, spinning his spear around to create a dark vortex that he sent at the dragon Digimon.

OmniShoutmon jumped up over the attack and did a flip in the air as he brought his bladed foot down with his Doom Drillpress attack. AxeKnightmon's axe came up, and OmniShoutmon's bladed leg clanged against it.

With a grunt, AxeKnightmon pushed OmniShoutmon back, then sped after him, swinging both his spear and axe. "Why are you even here?"

OmniShoutmon danced backwards, avoiding the two weapons and using his bladed legs to block when he couldn't. "Why do you think? To defeat Laylamon. Victorize Banking!"

The attack slammed against AxeKnightmon's axe, pushing him back, but he immediately went on the attack again. "You can't possibly be this foolish. The humans maybe, because they don't know better, but you do. You know you can't defeat the Demon Lords. Twin Spear!"

He stabbed forward, but OmniShoutmon caught the pointed end. He was still pushed back until he slammed into the side of the castle, but managed to avoid being impaled. "Yeah, I once thought so too. But then we defeated Leviamon. Then Belphemon, in his Rage Mode no less. Then Beelzemon X. Call me crazy, but I'm actually feeling a little hopeful. Hard Rock Spirit!"

He dared to let go of the spear with one hand to shoot a blast of fire into the knight Digimon. AxeKnightmon was blasted back, and OmniShoutmon flew after him. Now on the defense, AxeKnightmon used his spear and axe to deflect OmniShoutmon's Doom Drillpress.

"You're delusional. You've let a few fluke victories go to your head and have allowed yourself to become deluded. Now maybe, just maybe, you'll be able to defeat Laylamon if you get extremely lucky, but the rest of the Demon Lords, especially the big three? You're completely out of your mind. Multi-Dimensional Axe!"

He swung his axe, the blade slicing through the very fabric of dimensions. OmniShoutmon clapped his hands together and caught it, struggling as he tried to hold the axe back, the blade inches from his face. "Maybe so, but even if we die, as long as we take Laylamon down with us, I'd consider it a victory. Heck, even if we don't, having already taken down a single Demon Lord is a victory, but we plan to go as far as we can."

He shoved the axe backwards, and the handle jabbed AxeKnightmon in the gut. He grunted and stumbled back, allowing OmniShoutmon to drive his fist into his face, knocking him back further and then follow up with his Omni Core Fusion.

AxeKnightmon swung his axe, slicing OmniShoutmon's attack in half. "Don't be a fool. You know who I answer to. You can't win this war. Just surrender. Your death will be easier. Twin Spear!"

"Heavy Metal Vulcan!" OmniShoutmon countered, blocking with his firewall. "Compared to living under the Demon Lords' rule, everything is easier."

Had Ophanimon heard his claim, she might have disagreed. Fighting against BlackImperialdramon and trying not to hurt him was proving to be quite difficult. He, on the other hand, wasn't holding anything back, not even against her.

"Positron Laser!"

"Eden's Javelin!"

The two beams collided, the energy building up until it exploded. BlackImperialdramon charged at her, and she used her Unicorn Shield to bounce him off her barrier when he tackled her.

"Davis, stop this," she begged as he came at her again, slashing with his claws. She batted them away with her javelin. "Don't you remember what happened last time? I can save you. Please, let me."

He knocked her away with a kick. "There is no saving me, Kari, because there's nothing to save. I don't know how I can make that any clearer to you. Giga Death!"

"Unicorn Shield!"

The energy ball struck her shield, and she deflected it up into the sky where it exploded. "That's not true. It was working last time. Let me try again."

"You mean let you turn me into a weakling again? One ruled by compassion and morality?" He let out a cruel chuckle. "I'm afraid that's no longer even an option." His eyes suddenly flashed bright red for a brief moment. "Laylamon saw to that."

He charged at her. Ophanimon fired her Eden's Needle, but BlackImperialdramon flew straight through the stream of needles of light. He used his Positron Laser, the beam knocking her javelin out of her hands, and tackled her.

Ophanimon went down willingly, and grasped his head. She immediately began to flood him with purifying energy. BlackImperialdramon froze and then roared in pain as a multicolored aura flowed over him.

But then something else happened. The purifying energy was suddenly overcome by a wave of darkness. The rainbow aura vanished as a new one took its place, a pitch-black aura with numerous glowing red eyes swimming around in it. The aura surrounded him, moving about as if it were alive.

Ophanimon gasped and wriggled out of BlackImperialdramon hold, wanting to get away from the aura. She sensed the darkness in him caused by the Dark Spore rise up and undo the purification she had poured into him, corrupting him further. "What?"

Almost mechanically, BlackImperialdramon rose to his feet, the black aura surrounding him rising up and dancing around him violently. A cruel chuckle escaped him as he looked at Ophanimon's surprised expression, his eyes glowing red once more. "Are you surprised? I'd like you to meet my new friend, Shademon. She's taken up residence inside me for the time being. A sort of mutual partnership."

The black aura shrank down to form what seemed to be a black flame filled with glowing red eyes and a single yellow eye. It wrapped around BlackImperialdramon like a serpent, seemingly emerging from within the dragon Digimon.

Behind her helmet, Ophanimon's eyes were wide with horror. "You willingly picked up a parasite? Are you mad?"

BlackImperialdramon chuckled. "It's more of a symbiotic relationship. She gets to be a part of a powerful Digimon like myself, and in return, she prevents you from purging the Dark Spore from me. Any purification you do, she'll simply undo." He cracked his knuckles as Shademon sank back into his body. "Has the futility of your efforts finally sunk in?"

He began marching towards Ophanimon, who began backing away, not sure what to do now. "OmniShoutmon," she called, "what do you know about Shademon?"

The dragon Digimon ducked beneath AxeKnightmon's swinging axe and blasted him back with a Twin Fireball Strike. "Champion level. Special attack, Free Death Fall, which continuously displays illusions of its opponent being knocked to the ground 10,000 times."

He was interrupted as he was blasted back by AxeKnightmon's Treason Vortex, but immediately went after the knight Digimon again. "Shademon have no real substance. They haunt the shadows of others and feed off their despair in order to Digivolve. Whatever they Digivolve into is based on the amount of whatever it ingests."

"None of that is really helpful," Ophanimon called back.

"Giga Death!" BlackImperialdramon cried, firing another blast that Ophanimon deflected. "You're not getting away from me this time, Kari."

He charged at her. Ophanimon held out her hand, and her javelin flew into it. BlackImperialdramon threw a punch, and Ophanimon jumped away as his fist shattered the ground. She blasted him back with her Shining Laser, then brought forth a tornado with her Eden's Air attack to surround him.

BlackImperialdramon dug his feet into the ground as he resisted the tornado's heavy winds. "So, are actually going to try and kill me now?"

"Never!" she snapped. "I'll still find a way to save you."

"You can try."

He lunged forward, bursting out of the tornado. Ophanimon held up her shield and used her Unicorn Shield as he rained punches against her and she blocked them. She swung her javelin, hitting him in the side of the head with it, and he smacked it away, sending it flying before firing his Positron Laser at her.

Ophanimon flew backwards, avoiding the attack. BlackImperialdramon flew after her, still firing his beam. Then she surprised him by suddenly throwing her shield at him. It hit him in the forehead, distracting him, and then she blasted him back with her Sefirot Crystal.

Speeding forward, she plowed into him and used her Holy Light attack. The light she radiated knocked him back into the side of the castle, and she followed up with her Shining Laser, using the beams to pin him to the wall as she approached.

Reaching out with one hand, she placed it on his head while still firing with her other one. BlackImperialdramon just laughed. "It won't work. My little friend will just undo whatever you do."

"Maybe so, but what happens if I purify her instead? OmniShoutmon said she feeds on despair. What if I feed her something else?"

She injected purifying energy into him, but rather than targeting the Dark Spore, she sought out Shademon. She found her data swimming amongst BlackImperialdramon's, and she poured as much purification energy into it as she could. From within the dragon Digimon, Shademon screeched.

"You bitch!" BlackImperialdramon snarled, and managed to deliver a punch that knocked Ophanimon back.

She skidded to a halt, and was about to continue her assault, but BlackImperialdramon stumbled forward groaning. He fell to his hands and knees as a black and white aura surrounded him, and something emerged from his back. Much to Ophanimon's surprise though, it wasn't Shademon, but a pink and white Digimon that almost resembled an angelic version of Lopmon.

The little Digimon opened her eyes and looked up at Ophanimon, almost pleadingly. "Kill me."

Ophanimon blinked. "What?"

"I can't hold him back for long. You must kill me, quick."

Ophanimon tried to wrap her head around this, but everything was happening too fast. "But, wait. Kill you? Who even are you?"

A groan escaped BlackImperialdramon, and the fairy Digimon made a notable effort to keep him subdued. "I am Luminamon. The purified Digivolution of Shademon. Please, there's not much time before the darkness takes me back."

She let out an almost pained cry and grasped her head as the black aura surrounding BlackImperialdramon began to overcome the white.

"What do you mean, the darkness will take you back?" Ophanimon asked. "Tell me how I can help."

Luminamon shook her head. "You can't. I was Laylamon's failsafe so you couldn't purify your friend. I fused with the Dark Spore as Shademon so that if you tried to purify him, I would contaminate him again, and if you purify me, then the Dark Spore would contaminate me. You must destroy me before that happens. Please."

She let out another pained cry as the aura around BlackImperialdramon completely turned black and then spread to Luminamon.

Ophanimon felt torn. This Digimon who she didn't even know, who was apparently the purified Digivolution of the wicked Shademon, was begging her to kill him. She couldn't sacrifice her like that, but then again, it sounded as if this were the only way to save Davis from the darkness. And not just him, but Luminamon too, otherwise the Dark Spore would keep them both corrupted.

I can't just kill you," she said. "Maybe I can purify you both."

"You can't. It doesn't work that way. You must save your friend, and the only way to do that is to eliminate all traces of the dark Spore. I'm attached to the Dark Spore, I can't be saved. Once you kill me, the Dark Spore inside him will die too. It's the only way to save us both. Please, it's what I want!"

She let out another cry, and suddenly reverted back to Shademon. Her numerous eyes narrowed at Ophanimon before she hissed and sank back into BlackImperialdramon's body again.

He stood up and leered at Ophanimon. "That Luminamon has a big mouth. But you just caught me off guard. Don't think that I'll let you have an opportunity like that again. She can't hold me back anymore. You missed you chance."

He flew at her, and the two collided together in combat, while not too far away, Seraphimon and Blastmon engaged in battle. On the whole, Seraphimon found that his opponent wasn't on his level in terms of power, but when it came to defense, it was truly where the mineral Digimon shined.

Blastmon's body was incredibly hard, and this made it difficult to do any real damage. And when he did manage to damage him, Blastmon's body showed to be capable of regenerating.

"Diamond Machine Gun!" Blastmon cried, punching outward, and countless crystal shards flew from his body.

"Hallowed Ascension!" Seraphimon countered, and lighting came crashing down in front of him to strike down the barrage of crystals. He then flew forward, punching outward with his Hallowed Knuckle, and the balls of light blasted against the mineral Digimon. Seraphimon ended it with a punch to the face while blasting him again, and Blastmon slammed into the castle wall.

Coming to a stop, Seraphimon shook out his hand. Even with armor covering his knuckles, that punch against Blastmon's hard body still hurt.

Blastmon stepped away from the castle, looking relatively unharmed. A small crack was present on his body, but it quickly healed. "You can't get through my defenses that easily. I am the ultimate moving fortress."

Seraphimon's eyes narrowed behind his helmet. "A fortress can only take so much before it collapses."

"Not when it can regenerate like I can. Diamond Hedgehog!"

Curling up, he launched himself at Seraphimon. The angel Digimon took to the air, easily avoiding the tackle, but then, much to his surprise, Blastmon used his Kenron Crystal Volcano, and an explosion took place beneath him, launching him into the air.

Seraphimon gasped in surprise, but wasn't fast enough as Blastmon plowed into him. The angel Digimon slammed into the castle and dropped to the ground, and Blastmon charged at him.

"Janeken: Rock!" he cried, throwing a punch, only to have Seraphimon catch his fist with both hands. "Janken: Scissors!"

He threw another punch with his other hand, this time with his middle and index fingers extended. Seraphimon shifted to the side, and Blastmon's fingers buried into the castle, cracking it.

"Strike of the Seven Stars!" Seraphimon cried, and Blastmon was knocked backwards as the angel Digimon got to his feet. "What were those attacks supposed to be? Based off Rock-Paper-Scissors?"

Blastmon dusted off his smoking body. "The game is more dangerous than you think. Let me show you. Janken: Paper!"

He chopped forward, sending out a shockwave. Seraphimon flew up into the air to avoid it as the attack shattered the castle wall. Using Excalibur, he flew at Blastmon and brought the sword of light down on the mineral Digimon. It only cut through a few inches before Blastmon's hard body prevented him from cutting through any further.

"Crystal Breath!" Blastmon cried as he absorbed sunlight into his body and then released it in the form of a laser. Seraphimon was blasted back, his sword dislodging, and Blastmon came at him. "Naïve Emerald Chop!"

Raising his hand, he chopped down at Seraphimon, who blocked with his sword, which caused it to burst into light particles. Blastmon then followed up with his Final Subagon Punch, driving his fist into the ground. An earthquake started up, the ground splitting apart, and Seraphimon sought safety in the air.

"Hallowed Ascension!" he cried, sending lightning down upon Blastmon.

The mineral Digimon covered his head, grunting as he was struck by lightning, but he immediately launched himself into the air again with his Kenron Crystal Volcano and used his Naïve Emerald Chop. Seraphimon was able to block with his Excalibur, and this time his sword held.

"I don't get why you follow the Demon Lords," Seraphimon told him as they grappled in the air. "All for the sake of power? You must know that they only grant you that power so they can use you."

Blastmon glared at him. "Not all of us are in this for power. Janken: Rock!"

He threw a punch, but Seraphimon swerved to the side and grabbed is arm. "You're not in this." He began spinning the mineral Digimon around. "You're out of here!"

He let go, throwing Blastmon far into the distance. The mineral Digimon cried out as the light reflected off his diamond body, making him resemble a shooting star as he disappeared upon the horizon.

On reflex, Seraphimon turned his attention to Ophanimon. She was still engaged in battle with BlackImperialdramon, only now the dragon Digimon was surrounded by a black aura that seemed to be growing and expanding, filling the area like an evil fog. Seraphimon didn't know what that meant, but he didn't think it was good, and quickly flew over to help.

BlackImperialdramon had become much more aggressive, slashing away at the angel Digimon with his claws. Ophanimon was using her javelin and shield to bat his claws away, but was losing ground as she backed away, trying to figure out a way to simultaneously subdue BlackImperialdramon, purify Shademon again, and still manage to bring herself to destroy Luminamon all at the same time.

Finally, she lost her footing and fell over. BlackImperialdramon rose up over her, pointing his arm down at her. "Positron Las-"

Seraphimon's fist suddenly collided with his face, disrupting the attack. He simultaneously used his Hallowed Knuckle. Both the punch and the attack knocked BlackImperialdramon off his feet and he went flying.

"You ok?" he asked Ophanimon, offering his hand.

"I've been better, but thanks." She took his offered hand and allowed him to pull her to her feet. "You take care of Blastmon?"

"I don't think we need to worry about him for awhile. Did you get a chance to try and purify Davis yet, or did it not work?"

There was an angry cry as BlackImperialdramon sped over to them. He reached for Seraphimon, but the angel Digimon caught both of his much larger hands and held them back by his wrists.

"I'll kill you!" BlackImperialdramon snarled as the black aura continued to spread to the surrounding areas.

"This is new," Seraphimon commented, referring to the black aura.

"Shining Laser!" Ophanimon cried, blasting BlackImperialdramon off him, then following up with her Air Sefirot, blowing him away with a powerful gust of wind. "Purification alone won't work anymore, but I do know how to help him. TK, I'm sorry, but I'm afraid I must ask something horrible of you."

The fact that she had used his real name while he was in his Digimon form told him just how serious this request was. "What is it?"

Ophanimon took a deep breath. "In order to prevent us from purging the Dark Spore from him, Laylamon had a Digimon called Shademmon attach itself to him and fuse with the Dark Spore. If we destroy Shademon, the Dark Spore will die with her."

That sounded like good news to Seraphimon. "Ok, so what's the problem?"

"Giga Death!" BlackImperialdramon cried, firing an energy ball.

Seraphimon and Ophanimon took to the air to avoid the massive blast that followed. "The problem is that Shademon won't come out willingly," she told him. "I tried to purify her instead, and it caused her to temporarily Digivolve into Luminamon before the Dark Spore reverted her back to Shademon again. Luminamon wanted me to destroy her in order to free Davis. I can bring Luminamon back, but I'll need you to destroy her when she comes out while I keep her purified."

Seraphimon's eyes widened. "You want me to kill Luminamon? But if she's been purified, then she won't be evil anymore."

Ophanimon shut her eyes in despair. "I know, but there doesn't seem to be another way. As Shademon, she'll prevent Davis' purification, and the Dark Spore will keep reverting her back to Shademon even after I purify her. She said it's the only way to save them both from the darkness. She… She said told me it's what she wants."

"Positron Laser!" BlackImperialdramon cried, firing at them as he gave chase.

The two angel Digimon swerved about in the air as BlackImperialdramon continued to fire at them. Seraphimon glanced back at him. "I don't know if I can bring myself to do it, Kari."

"I know," she said remorsefully, her voice cracking. 'It's not fair, but we're out of options. Either we let both Davis and Luminamon remain evil, or we kill one of them who, at the very least, will be reborn."

"Giga Death!"

They dodged the attack that came at them and watched as it lit up the sky in a mighty blast. Seraphimon looked back down at BlackImperialdramon and realized that this may very well be their one and only chance to save their friend. His fists clenched, and he let out a frustrated cry. "Damn it! Alright, let's do it fast before I think about it too much."

Ophanimon nodded, hating that it had to come to this and that she had to ask this of her fellow angel Digimon. "Stay close to me."

She flew straight down towards BlackImperialdramon. He stopped chasing and fired his Positron Laser. She used her Unicorn Shield to defend herself, pushing onward through the beam, getting closer and closer. Her barrier began to fracture from the continuous onslaught as BlackImperialdramon kept firing, and he began to emit an angry cry as she got closer and closer.

Seconds before her barrier shattered, she slammed into him, and they both crashed to the ground. As she started to get up, BlackImperialdramon's hand shot out and grabbed her. He rolled them over and pinned Ophanimon beneath him, then raised his clawed hand to strike her.

Seraphimon was suddenly there, grabbing his arm and bending it backwards. BlackImperialdramon let out a pained grunt as his arm was bent in the wrong direction, and Seraphimon used his position to pin the dragon Digimon down.

Ophanimon grabbed the wrist of the hand holding her to the ground so BlackImperialdramon couldn't grab Seraphimon. Her other hand reached up and grasped the dragon Digimon's face. She quickly sought out Shademon's data. When she found it, she poured as much purification energy in as she could.

There was a wail from inside BlackImperialdramon that did not come from the dragon Digimon. A few moments later, Luminamon emerged.

"Do it!" the fairy Digimon shouted, spreading her arms.

Seraphimon didn't think, he could allow himself to. He cleared his mind and acted. Releasing BlackImperialdramon's arm, he used his Hallowed Knuckle, firing a ball of light at the fairy Digimon.

"NO!" BlackImperialdramon roared, reaching for her.

A smile grazed Luminamon's face a moment before the ball of light hit, and she exploded into data.

(A/N: It's never easy having to choose the lesser of two evils, but it really came down to letting both Davis and Luminamon remain evil and corrupt or sacrificing Luminamon and allowing her to be reborn in order to free Davis. Blame it on Laylamon for having such a cruel ploy. But will this really have been enough to free Davis from the darkness? If not, they're in trouble. Blastmon may have been taken out of the battle, but AxeKnightmon and Boltboutamon's copy are still holding their own. And even if they win, Laylamon is right inside the castle, and you know she's not going to just let them get away. What hope is left? Stay tuned to find out.)
