Idol

Hermione Granger stood in the doorway of the great hall at dinner time on the third night of her stay in Hogwarts. She was only a first year and she wasn't exactly what would be considered normal by the other students so as she scanned the length of the Gryffindor table she really didn't know where to sit.

Most of the spaces were full, there wasn't any beside the girls from her dorm, not that she'd want to sit next to them anyway they were all loud and screeched frequently. There was a space next to the two boys she had spoken to on the train, Harry Potter and the boy with dirt on his nose. They were no better being late to Transfiguration was such an embarrassment that they obviously had no respect for learning.

With a sigh Hermione wandered down the table and slid into the space between a group of seventh year girls and a tall fourth year boy. He shared the same bright red hair as that idiot boy on the train but a far haughtier air about him. Upon closer examination Hermione realised that he was a reading Hogwarts: A History over his roast potatoes.

Hermione felt excited, she hadn't realised that anyone else actually read the book. She herself had read it three times already and she noticed something new every time she read it.

"Can I help you?"

Hermione jumped as she realised that the fourth year boy was actually talking to her. She flushed bright red as he turned a piercing stare on her and she became aware that she had been caught staring at him.

"S-s-sorry," she stuttered turning back to her dinner and the fourth year went back to his. They didn't speak again that meal.

A few weeks later Hermione was sat in the library pouring over a pile of textbooks trying to glean as much information from them as she could manage. It just wasn't coming out though, she sat there and tried and tried to write but every time she put quill to parchment, nothing.

It was getting really frustrating and after being sat for half an hour staring at the blank parchment Hermione through down the quill and banged her head on the table repeatedly.

"You know you're only killing brain cells."

Hermione jumped again flushing absolutely scarlet as she saw the fourth year boy standing on the opposite side of her work table looking disgustedly down his nose at her. His eyes flicked down to the parchment and read the title of the essay she was working on.

He sighed and pulled out a chair beside her, set his books down to one side and pulled the piece of parchment towards him.

"What are you doing?" Hermione squeaked, disgusted with the way her own voice sounded.

"Helping you, obviously. Now, sit down and pay attention.

Over the following months Hermione and Percy formed an unlikely friendship. It was not something that they shared publicly, especially since Hermione accidentally became friends with his younger brother Ron.

But they would meet, almost every day, and sit sometimes in silence and sometimes help each other work. It was nothing more than a work relationship but Hermione found Percy's work ethic, his timetables and his on special method of quick hand absolutely vital when making her own notes. He had a no nonsense attitude when it came to tests that Hermione admired more than anything.

Percy Weasley became the biggest influence on Hermione's life since she was a little girl and he very quickly became her most treasured idol.
