365 Days of Drabbles Challenge: Prompt Used – Silence

Harry allowed the silence of the room to calm him. He wasn't sure of room he was in, but at least no one in Grimmauld Place would bother him there.

He looked around and noticed a portrait of a man who looked similar to Sirius. On the desk there was a book, and he walked over to it and picked it up. It looked worn around the edges, but still in relative good condition. In fancy script on the cover page was 'Journal of Regulus Black.'

'Regulus? It must be Sirius's brother.'

Harry sat at the desk and opened the book, curious about what Regulus would write about Sirius.

Instead of starting at the very beginning, he turned to a random page.

I went to Hogwarts today for my very first year. I was sorted into Slytherin. No surprise there. What did surprise me was how Sirius ignored me when I tried talking to him. I knew he'd be angry about me following our parents' footsteps and becoming a snake, but I didn't think he'd pretend I didn't exist.

I'm going to give him a couple of days to cool off, and hopefully when that happens, he'll see that nothing between us has to change.

We're brothers. We'll always be brothers. Our houses shouldn't matter.

Regulus

Harry sighed. He knew enough to know that things never got better between Regulus and Sirius, and Harry wondered how long Regulus attempted reconciliation before he gave up. Even if Regulus was stubborn and kept trying for a long while, Harry knew no one was more stubborn that Sirius. It was obvious which Black would have been the victor.

He turned to another random page.

I kissed someone today. Barty Crouch Jr. I would have never thought my first kiss would be with a boy, never mind my best friend, but it felt right at the time. There was nothing spectacular about the kiss, but it was nice.

If anything, I'm glad I got my first kiss out of the way. I just have to make sure Barty knows it's never going to go further than that.

I don't want to hurt him, but I need to be honest.

Regulus

Harry shook his head. Who would have thought it? Then again, he always thought there was something odd about Remus and Sirius's relationship. Maybe Sirius had more in common with his brother than he wanted to.

He turned to another page.

I've joined the Death Eaters. I'm not quite sure if I made the right decision. Following a madman isn't a good idea, and I'll probably end up killed before I'm able to marry, but I don't see any other choice.

My only family is my parents and my cousins. Andy might take me in, but she's newly married, and I don't want to impose on her. If I thought he would help, I would go to Sirius, but I know I would simply get a door slammed in my face.

I'm alone, and I'm going to do what I have to in order to survive.

Regulus

Harry swallowed. He wondered if Sirius ever read this, and if he did, did he blame himself?

He suddenly wanted to read each entry, to see the steps that led Regulus to joining Voldemort and see if there had been a way to avoid such a tragic event.

So, Harry did that. And by the end of the journal, with the last entry being about Regulus discovering something and deciding to do his part to help stop Voldemort – whatever that was – Harry knew he was in love. And what was worse, he was in love with a ghost. A man that had died before he was even born.

What as Harry going to do?
