List of Original Characters & Proper Names
I'm not fond of creating OCs, so it really stunned me to realize the number of names and characters I created in the course of writing this. They are mostly nonentities, mentioned once and then never again, and I left out a number of the really insignificant ones. I'm listing them here because a reader found all the OC names were getting really confusing.
Place names, feast names, etc. are also added here.
For canon names, please use Google…
Aduialiel [S] – "daughter of twilight" – a Sindarin version of Lómiel [because I don't want to use Lúthien or Arwen's names]
Aikanamma [Q] – "sharp talon". An eagle of Aman. Maybe it should be "Aikanammo" but I need someone to enlighten me whether the names of creatures/animals followed the same rules as for people.
Alassë [Q] – "joy". Sister of Aryo and Arman. Her father name is "Artalissë" (Q - noble grace) and her mother name is "Mirimë" (Q – "she who is free") or "Rain" (S – "free").
Alcarinos [Q] – "glorious/radiant city". New Gondolin in Aman.
Almion [Q] – "son of good fortune". Grandson of Galdor of the Tree.
Angurunír [S] – "iron-craft-man". Smith of the Woodland Realm [name by dreamingfifi]
Aníraeth [S] – "one who desires" [feminine]. One of the captains of Imladris. I like the name but it does not match her no-nonsense, tough character. Since the names and natures of elves are usually aligned, this is my bad. But I love this name.
Annalindë [Q] – "gift-song". Name created for Maglor's canonical wife.
Arasael [S] – "noble and wise". Eldarion's youngest child. [It should be lenited to "Arahael", but that's one of her Dúnedain male ancestors, and it just sounds more feminine this way. While it's true that Gondorians did use a bastardized version of Sindarin, Aragorn and Arwen would almost certainly have made sure that their children and grandchildren had proper Sindarin names. So my bad.]
Arasdil [S] – "deer-friend". Archer, Imladris
Arinnáro (Aryo) [Q] – "fire of the morning". The second last elfling born in Ennor [name by EbonyKitty552]
Arman (Q) – "ray of sunlight". The last elfling born in Ennor [name by EbonyKitty552]
Aros [S] – Aryo's alias. The name of a river in Beleriand in the First Age. It probably came to mind because of its similarity to Aryo's name. It should translate to "noble foam" which is OK for a river and not that odd for an elf.
Artalissë [Q] – "noble grace". The father name of Aryo and Arman's sister.
Artarína/Arinel [Q/S] – "crowned/garlanded with nobility". Argon's first love. [Names of several female Ainur end with "a", but I can't think of any elves whose Quenya names end with "a". I guess I should have made it "Artarínë", but I doubt I'll bother to edit it.]
Belroval (S) – "mighty wing". Eagle of Ennor.
Beril (S) – asexual, canonical name of an adaneth of the First Age, borrowed here for a captain of Imladris
Camaen [S] – "skilled hand". Smith of Imladris
Candes [S] – "bold young woman". Healer in Imladris who has the hots for Glorfindel.
Canyo [Q] – "bold one". Young hound of Oromë.
Cúmaen [S] - "skilled bow". Arman's epessë, given by the Silvan Elves of Eryn Lasgalen.
Curunáro [Q] – "crafter of fire". Pyromaster of Alcarinos. Formerly of the House of the Mole.
Eiliannel [S] – "rainbow star". Lute player at Imladris. One of Glorfindel's fervent admirers. [Originally Eiliantel and corrected by dreamingfifi as "intervocalic NT became NN in most dialects of Sindarin"]
Emlindir (S) – "yellow bird". Warrior of Imladris.
Eneldur [Q] – "mediator / a friend in the middle". Formerly of the House of the Mole.
Engildir [S] – "man of the light". Smith of Imladris in earlier Third Age, Camaen's master.
Estenguil (S) – "estent" = very short, "cuil" = life. [Originally "estencuil" till corrected by dreamingfifi]
Faelinn (S) – Aryo's childhood crush. An actual medieval name which happens to mean "spirit/soul song" in Sindarin
Finyon [Q] – "clever one". Aryo's mother name. [Okayed by dreamingfifi.)
Gilornel [S] – "star-tree". Rílel's mother, Celeborn's sister
Glasseth [S] – "Joy" + eth [feminine name suffix]. Sindarin version of Alassë's name.
Gwailint (S) – "wind-swift". An eagle of Ennor. [Is word-final "nt" legit for Sindarin? If not, I wish someone would tell me.]
Gwendir (S) – "friendship". The youngest of Estel's childhood friends at Imladris. Unfortunately his name could also mean "maiden".
Idhren [S] – "thoughtful, wise". Librarian at Imladris
Ilimba [Qenya] – "milky". White cat in Alcarinos.
Ingolmo [Q] – "loremaster". Ingwion is a canon character, but I gave him a mother-name.
Írehirmo (Q) – "desire-finder / one who has found his desire" (thanks to dreamingfifi again)
Istarnië [Q] – "skilled/knowledgeable one" (female). Tolkien's earlier name for Nerdanel, used here for her daughter.
Istuinor [S] – "learned one". Librarian of Gondolin
Kelvardil [Q] – "friend of animals, living creatures, fauna". A maia.
Laeros [S] – "summer rain" / "song spray". Lothuial's father
Laithron – from Gnomish "laithra" – "dead and gone, forgotten"
Lasseg (S) – "little leaf" (Thranduil's pet name for Legolas)
Laurelotya/Laurelotë (Q) – "[my] golden flower". Glorfindel.
Lossendol [Q] – "snowy-head, snow-top". Ecthelion's horse
Lothuial [S] – "flower of twilight". Thranduil's queen.
Luithir (S) – "Enchanted River" (by dreaming fifi)
Mairos [Gnomish] – "mane". Arman's horse. [It doesn't seem to have a feasible meaning in Quenya or Sindarin that I can figure out. "Mai" = excellent [Quenya]; "ros" = foam/spray [Sindarin]. They don't mix.]
Marinel [S] – "fruit/apple". A chef of Imladris.
Mirimë [Q] – "mirima" means "free" in early Quenya, and also sounds very much like "mírima" which means "very precious and lovely". So great meanings all round! Alassë's mother name.
Nárriel [Q] – "maiden crowned with fire". Daughter of Galdor of the Tree.
Náremírë [Q] – "fire jewel". Courtesan of Númenor. (Should be Normir in Sindarin, because Quenya names were only for the rulers of Númenor, but I liked the Quenya version so much I justified using it as the characters talking about her were speaking Quenya. On the whole I do think Quenya more beautiful than Sindarin.)
Naucanis (Q) – "nauca = stunted/short/dwarf"+ "nís = woman".
Naugwen (S) – "naug = dwarfed/stunted, wen = lass/maiden/girl". Basically, "shorty", or "dwarf-maid". Estel's nickname for Lómiel.
Neldanna [S] – healer who after a stint at Imladris returns to Lothlórien. [I was lazy with this name since I used it only once. I didn't bother if it made sense, nor did I bother to change it to a proper name form like 'Neldannel'. It means "three fall"; in my mind, an epessë for having survived falling out of a mallorn three times, haha. ]
Nénalin [Q] – "singing water". River that runs through Alcarinos.
Nossarto [Q] – "loyal/trusty follower of the House". Ecthelion's valet.
Nuthrachon (S) – "man under a curse" [by dreamingfifi]
Orlin [S] – "gleam/glint/narrow ray of light". Sindarin version of Arman. Echoes his mother's Sindarin name.
Ornor [S] – "morning fire". Sindarin version of Arinnáro.
Oronan [Q] – "high valley". Site of Alcarinos.
Parth Glóren [S] – "sward shining with golden light". The centre of Legolas' realm at Ithilien.
Rain [S] – "free". Mother-name of Alassë.
Rasco [Q] – "horn" (I'm choosing to interpret it as a hunting horn as he is a hunter.) Son of Rauco, Lord of the Hammer.
Rílel [S] – "brilliant star". Celeborn's sister-daughter.
Súrirámar [Q] – "wings of the wind". Finrod's larger sailing ship.
Tawarhir (S) – "Forest River" (by dreamingfifi)
Teliaris [S] – "playful queen". Thranduil's elder sister.
Thalanes [S] – "stalwart, steady, firm". Healer at Imladris. I don't think the name suits her, and midway through the story I thought of changing it to "Gwilwileth" – "Butterfly", but naw, too much like hard work.
Thavron [S] – "carpenter/builder". One of the builders of Imladris, who was also responsible for the carvings on the ceilings and cornices of the halls.
Tuiad Lyth (S) – "Birth (Sprouting) of Flowers"– the Sindarin version of Nost-na-Lothion [by dreamingfifi]
