Leo looked at himself in the mirror. His tux like suit sagged on his shoulders. His hat was the one thing that didn't look used and this came as no surprise as he had just bought it yesterday and the rest of his outfit had been given to him by Zap.
Today was a special day. One day a year, that was what she told him. One day a year to see each other. One day a year to explain how they feel. Leo just hoped he didn't screw up.
Finally ready, Leo headed out to the spot that they had agreed on, right before she … He had to make everything right. He had to tell her how he felt. He had to know if she felt the same way. He was sure she did. But he was still scared.
Eventually, Leo found himself at the graveyard, staring at the grave where he first saw her. She sat there, still in her white hospital dress. She gazed at the church, still under construction; the steel bars draped like spider's webs over the building.
Leo would be content to gaze lovingly at her forever, but, after reminding himself that he already had less than 24 hours, he coughed to get her attention. As she turned towards him, thick fat tears of joy sliding over her smile, Leo had no doubts about her affection.
The end of the day found Leo and White sitting at the public movie theatre. They were watching a romantic comedy, the classic boy-meets-girl routine.
All throughout the day, White had been attached to Leo, holding hands with him, scooting next to him when they sat in a booth for lunch. To a watcher by, it would have looked like they were grafted together.
Leo had contented himself to let White lead him around, after all, there probably isn't much to do when one is a forcefield. However, he had insisted that they go to see the movie. He had gotten one of Zap's friends to show the same movie that they had seen when he first sneaked her out. He also timed it so that it ended exactly at midnight, the perfect end to a perfect day.
Leo looked over at White and was surprised to see tears on her face. He looked at his watch and realized why, one minute till the end. Instead of trying to console her, he just pulled her in closer. He tilted up her head to his. Her eyes grew with surprise and then closed. He leaned in closer, closer, closer, until their lips touched in sheer ecstasy.
Thirty seconds later, Leo found himself alone again. The coldness of the night bit in at him, but he didn't feel it, even though he wore no substantial coat.
He didn't need one.
