Hey guys. I don't know what made me think of writing this, but I thought of this and wanted to write it, so here it is.
"Kai?" Nya asked, "can I come in?"
"Go away! I don't want to talk!"
Nya ignored her brother's request and opened the door anyway.
"Something's up. Please tell me," Nya begged.
Kai shook his head and turned the other direction, "what don't you understand about I don't want to talk?"
"Kai..." Nya sighed, "I guess I'll just go then. I get it. You don't want to talk right now."
Nya shut the door and fought back tears. She didn't need to know what Kai was upset about. She needed to know how to fix it.
It was her. Her and Jay to be specific. Jay's wish may have provided a clear way for her and Jay to remember what had happened, but the others were left in the dark. That was the problem.
Nya had always sought her brother out for advice ever since they were little. But Kai not being able to remember the cause for Nya's current nightmares where as Jay could was exactly the problem.
On the other side of the door, Kai cried silent tears. His relationship with Nya was drowning. There was no other way of explaining it. Sure, Kai was happy Jay and Nya were back together again. It just hurt knowing that Nya would rather go to Jay these days instead of him.
Hours later, a light tapping woke Kai up.
Jay opened the door. He had a nervous grin plastered across his face that said it all.
It was time.
Kai needed to let Nya go.
"Can we talk?" Jay scratched the back of his head, "It's really important."
Kai sighed, "You love her don't you? Nya?"
"Well, yes, and you're her brother. It's obvious you love her too. That's why I wanted to talk." Jay replied calmly although the look on his face said otherwise.
He was nervous. Scared. He thought Kai might hurt him maybe.
"I know why you want to talk, and it's probably time we did," Kai paused noticing Jay was braced for a punch.
"I just, I don't know. I just don't like it that Nya and I haven't been as close lately."
"What do you mean? If anything, I thought you guys were even closer after, after..." Jay trailed off.
Then Kai remembered.
Nya limp in Jay's arms dying. Tiger widow venom was splattered across the dress she was wearing. It was an ending worse than Romeo and Juliet. It was real.
Then Jay wished Nya had taken his hand back on the hospital rooftop.
He couldn't remember then, but he remembered now. Nya's nightmares were for a reason. A reason only Jay understood.
A reason that made sense to not tell the others.
Kai understood.
"Go ahead Jay. I trust you with her. Just make sure she's happy."
Kai sighed. It hurt to let Nya go, but he knew she was in good hands.
Jay hugged Kai, "thanks. That means a lot coming from you."
Some number of years later
"Uncle Kai, come see the drawing I made of you!"
Kai sat up and peered down at a stick drawing with some wacky hair.
"Very good. I like how you made my hair so good looking.
The little girl giggled, "you're funny Uncle Kai!"
"No. I'm being serious. You could be an artist someday."
"You really think so? The kids at school say I'm a bad drawer."
"Hey, next time someone hurts you, let me know. I'll be sure to give them some fist to face."
Nya looked up from nursing her second child. She remembered what Jay had joked about when they had their daughter.
The over protective brother was gone. The over protective uncle had taken his place.
I hope you all enjoyed. It was fun writing an after the fact piece from Skybound. In case you were wondering, the children were Isabelle and Alex, but I didn't want to say in the piece since this story and the Do you remember me? series aren't really connected. See Ya!
