Chapter 2: Better Late Than Never

- - - Naruto POV - - -

He woke up to the sound of his alarm clock making its presence known to the world. Bleary eyes blinked in an attempt to clear the results of sleep enough to focus on the brightly lit numbers.

9:00am. He had promised he'd spar with Sasuke in an hour. Then he had class until 4. He has a test in Hatake's class today.

"Fuck." He grumbled in response, rolling away from the still blaring device and attempting to smother his senses with a pillow. He felt the bed shift, and then he heard a light click signaling the end to the screaming device's tirade.

"What has you so cheery this morning?" a familiar voice added.

'So that wasn't dream?' Naruto shot up with the thought, turning slowly towards the source, all while lowering his pillow in an equally dramatic one round of peekaboo. He was met by a cheerful smile, adorned by tanned skin, framed by messy golden locks, and outshone by captivating blue eyes.

'Dad…' A grin carefully worked its way onto the younger blonde's features, until it finally reached his eyes. He pounced.

The two men laughed throughout their impromptu wrestling match. When they finally rolled apart to catch their breath, they were laying side-by-side next to the bed, with the sheets scattered haphazardly around them. Both blondes grinned as they listened to their pants fill the morning air.

The moment of peaceful silence was disturbed by a loud growl. Naruto rubbed his stomach with a sheepish grin directed at his father, who simply smiled his usual, loving smile. This time though, Naruto was amazed to finally recognize the depths of meaning behind it.

'How had I missed it? How could I not have seen how much he loved me before?' Flashes of the same smile over the years surfaced to his mind. He remembered so many times wondering…so maybe he did notice, but just didn't want to think about it.

"Let's talk over breakfast?" Minato offered, interrupting Naruto's thoughts.

"Yeah, sounds good." Naruto replied before standing and stretching the stiffness from his joints. He stopped mid-stretch, hands over his head, when he noticed the other man hadn't moved from the floor. A mischievous foxlike grin spread across his face in recognition of the lusty look clouding the man's vision.

"Real food first," came his relaxed response as he turned towards the door and began walking. "I'm not opposed to seconds though." He accompanied the flirtatious comment with a wink as he paused for dramatic effect at the door.

Naruto wiggled his butt on the way out, effectively replacing the sultry image he had created with the goofiness he felt shooting through his veins. He was souring high, having been freed from the crushing weight of his deepest, darkest secret.

- - - Minato POV - - -

Minato caught himself still staring into the space Naruto had just occupied. Yep, he was head-over-heels in love with that ridiculously goofy, optimistic, determined, sexy man. The sound of dishes clanking and cereal being poured drifted in from the nearby kitchen. He chuckled as he got up, deciding he could resume his thoughts in the kitchen, where he was sure to have a better view.

"Ddddddaaaaaaaaaaddddddd!" Naruto whined. "You're cereal is going to get soggy! And we're not going to eat in my bedroom!"

"I'm coming, I'm coming!" He yelled back, meandering his way to the table before the younger man had a chance to shout anymore. He picked up the juice that Naruto had set down for him, watching the boy has he plopped into his seat, his own cup sloshing but miraculously staying within the cup.

"Not yet, we're eating first!" the joke was backed by mischievous, glittering eyes, and it took all of Minato's self-control to not spit-take his drink. Laughter filled the apartment as his son flailed around in his seat, muttering things that sounded like 'your face' and 'omg.'

Minato pretended to glair, but he knew he'd just have to wait-out the man's fit of humor before being able to speak and be heard again. Sure enough, Naruto calmed down and began consuming his tower of cereal as if his life deepened on it. Minato was only half way finished with his properly proportioned amount when Naruto got up for seconds.

'I guess I'm going to have to start this conversation.' He thought as Naruto began devouring his second bowl.

"So…" He began, blanking on all the words he had practiced the night before. Seemingly innocent blue eyes looked up from their owner's hunched position to stare questioningly, despite knowing exactly what he wanted to know.

"What does this mean? What… are we doing?" It came out more hurt than he had expected. 'Could this really work?'

His anticipation grew as he watched the beautiful man's face scrunch in concentration. 'What would he decide?' Based on his suggestive comments, Minato didn't think Naruto would want to just pretend nothing happened, but it was hard for him to believe that they could be a normal couple.

"It means the same thing it always has; we're just now free to do exactly what we've always wanted to do." He replied simply and dug back into his cereal, seemingly content with his answer.

"But, I'm your father, is this really the type of relationship you w—"

"You think I don't know you're my dad?" Naruto interrupted with a slam of his palm onto the table. It did the trick in fully captivating the worrying man's attention. "You think I haven't thought about this for the last four years? I know who you are, and it's not just my father." Minato watched in awe as the rage quieted into soft, determined confidence.

"You are Namikaze Minato: my father, my mentor, my best friend, and now, finally, my lover. You're courageous, sincere, intelligent, loving, creative, joyous, and so much more." Tears began to form in Minato's eyes, slipping out when he noticed the wetness building up in the determined ones staring him down as well.

"Yes, you were there for me as a parental figure when I was growing up, but I'm grown up now. You let me go—set me free into the world as an adult—and I came back as an equal." Shorter blond locks swayed in counter motion to Naruto's shaking head. Minato experienced a brief moment of worry as he watched the man struggle through his thoughts with clenched teeth. The scrunched face relaxed quickly though, and Naruto continued where he had left off. Minato could only wonder what it was that had made the man so distraught.

"I came back as a friend." He added softly. "We've been through so much as friends. You know and understand me even better than Sasuke. I didn't move away for college because I couldn't stand the idea of coming home every night to someone other than you." Minato watched as Naruto's face further softened, the knowing smile sent his way hitting him in the heart.

"I know you felt it too—that relief of being home, but only when we were both there to greet each other." Minato was mesmerized by the content play of emotions transforming the younger man's face. However, it eventually became stern and hardened with resolve, and Minato braced himself, expecting a hard verbal impact.

- - - Naruto POV - - -

Naruto schooled his features, determined to make his next statement more confident than he felt. Taking a deep breath, he finally looked Minato directly in the eyes. He can do this. He now knows his feelings are reciprocated.

"I fell in love with you because of who you are, and the amazing bond we have. I know you love me that way too, and I want to hear you say it." The blond finished his speech determinedly, resigning himself to now wait patiently for his lover's response.

It was quite comical actually; the older man seemed to be doing his best impression of a goldfish, and failing miserably.

'Good, at least he's not the only one still struggling to let go.' Naruto thought, barely containing his amusement.

"I—Naruto—yes." He mouthed silent almost-words for another sentence, before continuing to actually speak upon Naruto's silent prompting. "Does this mean? Are we?" Blue eyes begged to be saved, and Naruto couldn't help but roll his. The ridiculousness of his position did put a warm smile on his lips though. Really now, who was the older one here?

"Yes, I want to be a couple, at least to you. We can figure out what we want to do publicly another time. Right now I just want to hear that you love me, in that confident way you speak when you've made a decision you plan to see through." Naruto decided to be nice and help the fish-impersonating man who was currently drowning in air.

It did the trick, because Minato instantly abandoned his cereal at those words. Invading Naruto's space, the finally confidant man surprised him by capturing his face with firm hands. The next words that came from the beautiful man before him melted his hesitant heart.

"Naruto." Minato paused to stare purposefully into said person's eyes. "I love you, and I want you in every way that you'll let me have you." Naruto gulped, feeling blood rush to his cheeks with an excitement that rivaled a crushing school girl. And that was saying something considering he grew up with Sakura and Inu.

He almost squealed like them too, but clenched his eyes with his effort to force the sound down. When he had enough control of himself, he opened them again for the man patiently waiting before him. He saw lust quickly replace the slightly anxious expression he'd been greeted with, and he knew he must have a similar expression himself.

"Good." Naruto replied in a husky tone that surprised even him, before pulling his dream-made-reality down for a passionate kiss. When Minato pulled away for breath, a goofy grin dominated his features.

"What?" Naruto asked, unable to figure out what was so amusing.

"I just can't believe this is actually happening. I didn't see any of it coming, and I feel like an idiot for being so blinded by my own fears for so long." He answered with vulnerable sincerity.

Naruto's body became flooded with the shock of realization. That sentence was apparently the connecting puzzle piece that served to reveal how all the other sections he had been working on related to one another. Rearranging his thoughts accordingly, Naruto finally figured out the solution to a problem he hadn't even known he'd been working on.

"I finally got it." He sated it automatically, mostly to himself.

"Got what?" The question pulled the distracted man back into reality. His eyes shifted from where they had been blindly staring to look excitedly into Minato's eyes.

"I finally get what my ridiculous critical thinking teacher was rambling on about last week!"

"Oh?" Minato prompted the confusing man in an amused tone and a matching smile.

"He was going on about boiling frogs. Specifically this saying about boiling them slowly verses throwing them into boiling water. About how their legs coagulate—or something sciency—when they're boiled, and so they can't jump. I thought it was stupid, because it's not biology class, and either way the frog's going to get boiled, and I don't like eating frogs so it has nothing to do with me at all. It was supposed to be one of his 'look underneath the underneath' class discussions, but I only just realized now what he wanted us to get out of it." Naruto took a deep recovery breath, but instead of continuing, just smiled proudly as he mentally patted himself on the back.

He was so going to rock todays test! Hatake Kakashi is obsessed with 'looking underneath the underneath.' To the point that every test they have to write a personal story about how they've accomplished this in an area related to that section's topics. Naruto has been struggling with that section of the course, but that porn loving pervert is sure to give him an A after he gets an eyeful of his essay!

"Go on, I'm listening." Minato again prompted, once again pulling Naruto out of his own thoughts.

"Well, when you made your 'I didn't see it because I was blinded by my own fear' comment, it made me realize that we all use the saying backwards! And I think that we do it in an attempt to justify not doing anything about our situations in life!" Naruto's face became serious as he combed through all the details he had subconsciously, but purposefully, overlooked before. His demeanor dropped momentarily as he reprimanded himself for picking the path of ignorance and inaction, choosing to ignore obvious grief from both of their sides to simply hope that things would 'just work out.'

Blond locks swayed at his head shook softly. Naruto dispelled the thoughts for a later time, managing to refocus and resume his explanation without prompting.

"The frogs wouldn't think anything about it at first, but once the water gets too hot to be comfortable, they'd start trying to escape. Where-as, if you threw them right in, they'd already be boiling without time to react." Naruto paused to nod at himself, going over what he just said and agreeing with himself that it was the truth.

"This saying is always flung around by people claiming to be unaware that they were going to get burned by the outcome of their situation, because it was so gradual. I know because I did the same thing, but I did notice the development in my feelings towards you. I just chose to ignore them and hide them and not do anything about them. I chose to not jump out of the water when it began to get too hot to be comfortable." His smug satisfaction at his realization shifted to mature realization. He looked up at the man listening patiently to his rant and flashed him a sheepish grin.

"I just got lucky that you liked me back." Naruto's face hardened with the seriousness of his next words. "But I may not be this lucky again if I keep ignoring what's going on around me."

This time he was pulled from his internal reality by strong hands lifting him to his feet. He had no time to question the action before his mouth was captured into a fervent kiss. He felt the hard edge of the table hit his butt moments before firm hands grabbed each cheek to lift him onto it.

That was when he noticed that it was probably weird that neither of them had bothered to put on clothes for breakfast. His pondering quickly turned into mental exclamations of thanks, to whatever's out their influencing them, that they didn't, because the hot erection pressing into his felt wonderful with nothing in between.

Hands clawed, grabbed, and pressed as their mouths explored everywhere they could. With a growl, Minato pushed Naruto to lie on the table, both blondes blissfully ignoring the bowl and spoon that clanked onto the ground loudly.

Bending over, the older man bit and kissed his way across the tan chest below him, settling on his nipple as a finger drifted lower to tease his willing captive's entrance.

"Fuck. Sasuke." Naruto panted out. Minato stiffened instantly.

"Uhhh, wrong name." The older man said in an unsure tone.

"N-No! I-It's not like that! We're just friends! I just remembered that I'd promised I'd spar with him before my class!" Naruto scrambled to rectify the misunderstanding, blushing madly at his blunder and mentally slapping himself. Luckily it worked, and he felt Minato relax. Naruto finally smiled and relaxed too when a warm smile was sent is way. The smile quickly turned mischievous though, and he couldn't help but gulp and tense again in apprehension.

"Why don't you call him and cancel then? Unless you want to explain to him why you're walking weird." The man purred the suggestion 'innocently,' but the younger blonde knew the man's mischievous ways all too well. He was about to form his protest to the trusting anything spoken in that tone when the second sentence finally registered in his conscious thought.

"Wha? But I'm not walking weird today."

Minato answered his question with a hot mouth around his length and a saliva-slickened digit easing through his entrance. A loud moan escaped his lips as he found himself lost to the wonderful sensations of his body. 'Oh, that's what he meant. Devilish minx.'

"My phone—ah!—is in the, mmmhhnnn, bedroom." He was already so far gone, lost to the world of pleasure he'd only ever dreamed about before last night. He fought through the lust-induced haze in his mind to try and remember why he needed his phone again.

"Good, because that's where the lube is." Naruto whined at the loss of all pleasurable contact.

'Fuck lube, just take me now.' He mewled in his head, the dirty words not quite making it past his filters yet.

- - - Minato POV - - -

He led the dazed man to sit up, firmly guided him off the table and to the bedroom with an adventurous hand on either hip. He gave in easily to his impulses to sink in closer and suck on the exposed neck before him, pulling back each time only when the action would send them stumbling.

When they finally made it to the bedroom, Minato pressed his disheveled lover into the closest wall, effectively dispersing some of lust-limped weight as he continued to ravage the man.

"Minato."

Minato couldn't tell if his name was spoken as a protesting whine or an appreciative moan, but it reminded him of his perverted desires to make the obviously occupied man try and speak whole sentences to his unassuming friend.

"Grab your phone Naruto." The command came out as a husky growl, and the subjugated man it was aimed at shivered in response.

"Whaa?" Came his intelligent response when he quickly registered the loss in contact.

"Call Sasuke and let him know you won't be making it to practice today." Minato whispered sinfully sweet into his ear.

"Why? Can't it wait?" Blue eyes pouted up at him, almost changing his resolve. Minato refused to back down to any challenge though, especially if it let the younger blond know how much power he really had over him.

"Wait any longer and he'll be all alone waiting for you. That would be such a terrible thing to do to a friend wouldn't it?" OK, he was playing it up a bit; they both knew Sasuke would train alone and forgive Naruto easily. Minato also knew that Naruto couldn't stand the thought of betraying someone's trust.

Sure enough, Naruto moved past him to grab his phone off the night stand, the numbers flashing from his fingers as if they were on autopilot. Minato wasted no time in pushing the still-dazed man to the bed, doing so as soon as the call button was pressed.

A strangled noise of shock was accompanied by the ringing tone of the phone, and Minato's mouth was on him again before Sasuke could pick up. He heard a muffled male's voice probably uttering a rude greeting, and laughed silently as Naruto floundered his phone between his hands in a hasty attempt to bring the device within hearing and speaking range.

"H-Hey! Sasuke?" The pleasurably tortured man's voice hiked up to an ear shattering pitch when Minato chose that exact moment to resume where he left off at the table.

More inaudible words, probably of concern or in ridicule. Knowing Sasuke, they'd be undoubtedly delivered at the same time.

"I know its l-late notice," His muffled gasp into the bed created a dramatic pause between his sentences, "but-I'm-going to-have-to-cancel." Naruto rushed through his final sentence, knowing taking longer could only lead to more slip-ups, thanks to that devilish mouth sucking in the most sinful of ways.

Minato couldn't make out the muffled response, but he knew Sasuke was probably both concerned for Naruto's heath and wary of the information he was unmistakably missing.

"I–ah—have to study a bit more for that test in Kakashi's class today!" Naruto managed to respond almost normally that time. Minato wondered offhandedly how he had managed, but he was shocked from his musings as the, luckily cased, phone flew over his head onto the carpeted floor behind him.

"You're evil." Naruto commented simply.

"You love it." Minato responded confidently.

"Yeah, I do, just don't make me late for the only test I'll actually get a good grade on!" Naruto's enthusiasm was lost on him, but he decided he didn't care when it made the man he loves kiss him so intensely.
