Everyone was at a lost of what to do, the wolves were after them, the Volturi, and most of all Bella's father. Charlie was angry and rightfully so. His daughter had gone missing for two weeks now, no call, no text, no email. He had left very many angry messages, most particularly targeted at Carlisle. They knew his anger was well directed, and knew that they could only continue to lie to him for so long. And it wasn't just Charlie who was angry, it was also the wolves, most specifically Jacob Black. Bella went with Alice to go to Italy, and save Edward, however, Edward and Alice came back, but not Bella.
And now they were angry, they were trying to accuse them of breaking the treaty, but as specified by Carlisle they had in no way at all done so. This of course did not help things, and now they were constantly in Forks. Always lurking around, watching. Two days ago, Carlisle had walked out one of the nurses to her car after getting off a late night shift. As she drove away, he realized he was being watched. He assumed it was one of the night shift nurses admiring him again, so he ignored it and continued on his way. However, as he was driving, he began to realize that he indeed was being followed. They've dealt with this sort of thing before, where a human would get a little curious, and start to poke around. However this wasn't one of those times, he could see Jacob clearly through the tree lines. He didn't even make an attempt to conceal himself. Carlisle parked on the side of the road, and stood near the passenger side with his hands raised in surrender.
"I don't know what you're hoping to find Jacob, but I certainly do not have it". His voice had a slight tinge of his old english accent, he never spoke with not even the slightest hint of an english accent, having disappeared slowly over time since he had moved here. usually it never came out unless he was under a significant amount of stress.
Jacob stepped towards him, wearing nothing but a pair of swimming trunks, that were still wet. He probably had been at one of La Push's beaches before he came out to "check" on Carlisle and his family."I'm pretty sure you do Carlisle, hell, wasn't it your daughter that brought her to the bloodsuckers lair? And wasn't it your son that caused her to have run over there, to get to the bloodsucker's lair? Isn't it because of your FAMILY that she ever even knew about our existence anyways! Huh?" Tell me! Tell me, Dr. Cullen, isn't it because of your family-"
"Enough, Jacob! Put him down, before we get accused of breaking the treaty, because you attacked their leader!"
Jacob was now towering over Carlisle, until he was pressed up against the hood of his car. He had grabbed Carlisle by the collar of his lab coat. His face was so close to his, that Carlisle could smell the barbecued processed meat he had previously eaten earlier. Seeing that Jacob wasn't budging, Sam growled at him, "Now Jacob, thats on order."
He let the man down, all while not breaking his glare. "You got lucky, you ass, real lucky." And with that he was gone.
Leaving Carlisle to face a disheveled Sam Uley. Carlisle nodded his head in his direction and let out a small thank you, he was about to get in his car and drive home, when Sam all of a sudden slammed the car door shut before he could get in. Carlisle let out an exasperated sigh, and turned towards the pack leader.
"Don't thank me, you filthy leech. If it wasn't for the fact that you were so well known through out these parts we would've dragged you to the nearest cave we could find and make your family watch as we light you on fire. Haven't you and your kind done enough? Out of all the people in this world, why her? Why, Bella?"
He swallowed hard, it wasn't necessary, but it was all he could think to do in that moment. He simply adjusted his coat and waited for Sam to move. Sam shook his head, and disappeared into the tree line, but not without a parting message.
"One day, one day Cullen. I'll make you regret the day you and your family ever moved here."
Carlisle sighed and got back in his car, it was there that he finally released that well hidden emotions that he had tried to hide from his family. His frustration and anger filled his eyes with tears, never to be shed. All he could think about now was Esme. Who knows what could've happened if Sam Uley had not intervened, he saw the anger in Jacob's eyes. And now he feared the lengths Jacob would go to in order to get Bella back. Carlisle had kept one too many secrets from his family, and now it was coming back to bite him in the ass. The least he could do was at least try to keep his wife out of it.
Carlisle tried his best to avoid his family that night, he would tell him about what happened tomorrow he decided. But for now he would rather sit in his office.
The Cullens had been making an effort of trying to keep the peace, but they had to admit this was getting a bit annoying. Many times Carlisle thought about going to the wolves and asking them to stop, but he was too afraid there would be retaliation. So they tried their best to ignore it. In the midst of trying to deal with that, they were also trying to deal with the amount of disappearances in Seattle. Usually they don't pay attention to those types of things, but this time it was hard to ignore. So far at least three people this week had been reported missing, and just one more today, making that four people in total having disappeared. They didn't want to assume the worst, but sadly after the total amount of people having gone missing they had no choice, but to pay attention to the matter.
The tables were scattered with newspapers clippings and police reports, there wasn't a moment that went by that the news wasn't on. There was so much going on that the Cullens were starting to feel as if they were suffocating, not literally of course. They were overwhelmed and exhausted, with dealing with wolves and Bella's father and also dealing with the situation in Seattle.
On top of everything else, there was still the matter of what to do with Edward. He was angry Bella was still in Italy with the Volturi, and had even tried taking it out on Alice. Which, of course did not sit well with Jasper, had Carlisle not been there to step in, who knows what could've happened. He spent most of his time now, sulking in his bedroom, only leaving if he needed to hunt. Carlisle did not know what to do or say to him, to make things better. He has never been in a situation similar to this. Where a one mate goes to find another, if Bella was even is for that matter. In all honesty, he had always suspected the relationship from the beginning, something always seemed off or not right to him. However, always he would blame it on the fact that it was a human/vampire relationship, that they were still figuring things out. Carlisle bit his lips, as he tried to make sense out of the situation. He held on tight to Esme, who nuzzled his neck in response. He was afraid for the future and what it held, something was telling to him that that things were going to be very different from they're regular normal.
Athenodora
Bella fell asleep in my arms that night, so I did my best not to wake her when I brought her back to her rooms. I never knew how loud the stone floors were, until I was trying my best not to make a sound, so as not to wake the poor dear. It was almost at the witching hour, so it was no wonder why she had fallen asleep. She looked beautiful when she slept, peaceful and content. I couldn't help, but linger a while when after setting her down on her bed. After a moment I sighed and left for my offices.
There was a very much to get done, many papers to sign, trials to judge, and incidents to cover up. One would think that vampires would be more careful as time went on, but no, only recklessness was to be found. It was annoying to always be cleaning up after others, sometimes it made me feel as if I was parenting a group of unruly toddlers. Of course we had found ways to make the work easier on ourselves, distributing task amongst the most trusted of our guards. However, there have been more disappearances than normal, and it's sending the humans in America into a frenzy. We didn't know how big the newborn army is or what may have lead to it's creation, he only knows that there is one. We are still waiting for him to tell us more information
I pushed the stack of papers away, and went to go find Didyme. Sulpicia had gone to Venice just a few hours ago, to check up the gowns we asked to be made for the three of us. A longstanding friend of ours has finally found his mate, he was barely able to contain himself when he flew to Volterra just to inform us of the news. It was to be a Greek wedding, Althea the bride to be, was gifted a small island by her father many centuries ago. Thats where their wedding was going to be, and where they planned to live also. The wedding was four months from now, but it was just the one seamstress herself making all of our dresses so we have to give her time to apply her talent.
Didyme was in the garden, under the big oak tree. She liked to come here at night and look at the constellations, later she drew them in her sketch book. Sometimes Sulpicia and I would come and sit with her, or just one of us would join her, and she would tell us the story behind each constellation she spotted. It was a nice way to spend time with each other, sometimes it would be the first time we had seen each other that day. Her ability to find such joy in the simple things of immortality was one of the things I admired about her most. She has this warm, inviting atmosphere about her that attracts both humans and vampires alike. It's this attribute that have helped us gain some valuable allies in the past, and in some ways strengthened our influence in the vampire world. As soon as she saw me a smile lit her face, and she beckoned me towards her. Tonight she had decided to fill her time with an old collection of Shakespeare plays, I guess the stars were unable to capture her interest tonight.
"Love sought is good, but given unsought is better." She pulled me down to sit next to her.
"Shakespeare?" I snuggled into her side.
"Hmm, Twelfth Night, Act three, scene one." She sighed."A woman driven mad by the loss of her mate, is what have been causing us trouble in Seattle. She goes by the name Victoria, I believe she was coven mates with Heidi at some point and time."
"Ugh, I don't think I can deal with another newborn army mess again, Di, it'll be a lot harder this time to cover things up."
"I know, I didn't think vampires could get headaches until we had to deal with that whole mess. Especially the one led by that Maria woman, now that was a pain in the ass." Didyme grumbled. "From what I've been told it doesn't look like anything a few guards wont be able to handle."
"Good, we can make a selection of who well send tomorrow."
She hummed in agreement and went back to reading, tightening her arms around me. I had a very suspicious feeling about this whole newborn situation, something wasn't right. When we dealt with the whole newborn army mess in North America, it took us years to get everything under control and finally put down the various newborn armies. We had to bribe a few officials in order to ensure that the whole thing was completely done and over with, and even then there was still a few things that had to be done. Theres just something very wrong with this whole situation, something that was right on the tip of my nose as the humans would say or was said a different way? Oh well.
