Chapter Twenty Two: What If It's Him?

"What if it's him? What will you do?" - Akashi Seijuro

XXXXXX

Momoi Satsuki must have sat in the dark in her college dorm room for hours, simply staring at her phone, making the LCD screen come to life again when it went back to sleep mode.

It is Friday night, and thus, her roommate must be out partying or at her boyfriend's place; and likely won't be coming home until Sunday night at least. It is a routine entirely common for college students if they aren't going back home. In fact, Satsuki normally took the chance of weekends to visit Ryota at his pilot college where he had his own apartment. But she had given the excuse of having to study for a paper; and thus, had her dorm to herself that weekend.

Finally, Satsuki plucked up her courage, pressing the dial button on her phone and placing it to her ear. The phone rang for a long time. And just as Satsuki is about to hang up, the call was answered.

"Hello?" A voice answered in English, sounding quite wary and suspicious.

Satsuki didn't say anything for several moments before she plucked up her courage. "Tamaki-chan? It's me."

There was a stunned silence on the other end of the line. In fact, the only reason why Satsuki knew that Tamaki is still there is due to the background sound of dogs barking.

"…Satsuki?"

Akashi Seijuro must have stared at the same page of his college textbook for two hours now, yet, he is not registering anything at all; as his mind kept going back to the same topic that has been plaguing him for days now—ever since the end of the NHK Trophy, and both his childhood friend and cousin have flown back to the States, with an entire team of Japan's best investigators following in their wake.

Finally, Akashi sighed, and leaned back in his chair, staring up at the ceiling of his dorm room—his mind replaying the rather unpleasant conversation that he had with Shigehiro just mere hours before the latter's return to the States.

In fact, Shigehiro probably timed it on purpose just so that Akashi wouldn't blow his top and forbid Tamaki from returning to the States.

Akashi also thought back to the rather short and curt, and yet intense meeting that he had with Momoi Satsuki when he had ran into her in the hallways of Todai.

Granted, Akashi knew that he, Momoi and even Midorima were all in the same college, with Aomine, Murasakibara and even Kise attending different colleges in pursuit of their future careers. As for Tamaki, everyone and their grandmother probably knew where she is attending college, as tabloids and magazines in Japan have often featured Tamaki.

She and Katsuki Yuuri were favourites of sports magazines in particular; especially with how popular figure skating is getting in recent years. And both of them have worked hard to get to where they are now. Sure, they have setbacks in the past, but neither had let it deter them. It is probably why they have so many supporters and fans in Japan, and even all over the world.

Knowing them both however, they're probably ignorant to it all.

Despite attending the same college as Midorima and Momoi however, Akashi hardly ever see either one of his old middle school teammates in Todai, given that they were all in different faculties, and even had dorms in different parts of the school's dormitory wing.

The fact that he'd even ran into Momoi at all is a miracle.

"I'll make things brief." Akashi said, never taking his eyes from Momoi—having run into her at the vending machines after his classes for the day had ended. "Shige actually told me about it before they have to return to the States; and my mom already had a visit from an investigator before that, telling us everything."

"Is this about the strange gifts that have been sent to Tamaki-chan?" Momoi asked. "It was all over social media and even sports news a few days ago." She explained.

With how well known that Tamaki is amongst the international scene, both know full well that something of this calibre is impossible to be kept silent.

"I know full well that there are lots of people that actually fits the bill that the police have been on the lookout for." Akashi said carefully, studying Momoi intently. "But there is only a mere handful that will know personal information about Tama. Personal information that is pretty obvious in the 'gifts' that she'd received if you know just what to look for."

"What are you getting at?"

"…Is it him?"

"How did you get my number?"

"I have my ways, you know that." Satsuki told Tamaki, feeling relieved that Tamaki didn't hang up the moment she'd heard Satsuki's voice.

She knows that while Tamaki is at least on talking terms with Midorima and Kise, she hasn't spoken to them much since their second year of high school. Midorima is likely the only one apart from Akashi that even stays in constant contact with Tamaki, and even that is mainly through emails.

Hell, Satsuki hasn't even spoken to Tamaki since that day when Akashi had forced the entire Generation of Miracles into a meeting during their first year of high school. As for Aomine and Murasakibara, Satsuki knows for one that Tamaki hasn't spoken to them at all in three years.

As for Satsuki herself, she has no idea where she even stands with her once best friend. And Satsuki is rational enough to realise that the fault lies with her.

"Ever the spy, Satsuki." Tamaki sounded rather amused over the phone. "And here you wonder why people wonder if you're not some international professional spy. You might have chosen the wrong major in college. You should have joined the JSDF instead of taking Sports Sciences at Todai."

"Pot calling kettle, Tamaki-chan?" Satsuki smiled. "Your skills as a tactician and analyst couldn't be rivalled. Not even I could do what you could. Seirin is one good example. You weren't part of their team officially, but even they couldn't do what they did without your help."

"I wonder?" Tamaki mused. "So what's up? You can't have called me just to catch up."

Satsuki was silent. "I heard what happened," she said at last. "It was all over social media. And I ran into Akashi-kun the other day in school. He told me a bit as well."

"…I see."

Satsuki bit on her bottom lip. She recalled the last part of the conversation with Akashi.

"I had my suspicions for awhile now. The 'gifts' that were sent to my cousin had a personal touch. Only someone who knows Tama personally will know exactly what flowers she likes, and even what her dog looks like as a puppy, and what type of collar he wears." Akashi let out a breath. "Satsuki, I want you to tell me the truth. Is it him?"

"I'm okay." Tamaki sounded rather like she's trying to reassure herself than Satsuki. "The MPD went as far as to assign an entire police team to investigate and to guard me around the clock." She sounded rather annoyed, and Satsuki can't help laughing. "Laugh it up all you want."

"Sorry." Satsuki smiled. "Well, as long as you're all right. Maybe we should catch up the next time you're in Japan? It has been quite some time since I'd last seen you."

"Of course. Satsuki, I love to talk more, but I really have to hang up."

"…Okay." Click.

Satsuki stared at the LCD screen of her phone.

"It's not him." Satsuki leapt to his defence at once.

Akashi raised a brow. "Are you saying that just because you're his childhood friend? I understand your feelings. I would have done the same thing for Tama and Shige—"

"That's not it!" Momoi's outburst caught the attention of a few passing students. A well-placed glare from Akashi sent them on their way. One year in, and all of Todai knew by now the effects of Akashi's volatile temper. None of them wanted to test his already steadily thinning temper. "He wouldn't have done this. I know him."

Akashi stared Momoi down, not feeling that impressed. "You thought you 'know' him as well back in Teiko, and what happened?" he asked sarcastically, and Momoi flinched like she'd been slapped. "I can let what happened in Teiko be water under the bridge. But if it really is him that has been tormenting my cousin for nearly a year, I'm not going to let this go. We're all adults now, and know right from wrong. This won't just be mere detention or suspension from school from club activities. This is the law that we're talking about now."

"You're wrong about him! It's not him!"

Akashi stared Momoi down unblinkingly. "And what if it's him?" he questioned. "What will you do?"

Akashi leaned back in his chair even further to the point that he is dangerously close to falling out of it.

This is one of the few times when he wished that his cousin isn't half a continent away from him! But then again, his best friend is with her, and he knows his cousin well enough to know that she can handle herself.

"Aomine, it better not be you." Akashi murmured darkly to himself. "You'd better find a very good hiding place if it is you, as I will not let it go this time." He scowled before righting himself before he falls and hits his head on the ground or something. "There must be something I can do even in Japan." Akashi furrowed his brows. He knows better than to fly to the States in the middle of the school term.

Not only will his mother murder him; his cousin will not be pleased with him either which will be counter productive for his reason in doing so—to protect her.

Akashi's eyes then landed on one of the few photo frames displayed on his study desk—a photo of the Rakuzan team taken during Mayuzumi's graduation from high school. The eldest of the Rakuzan team at that time looks slightly annoyed in the picture, as Hayama had stolen his graduation cap and had put it on his head; and Nebuya had grabbed Mayuzumi in a headlock, a wide grin on his face.

"I wonder…" Akashi mused.

Unlike with his old Teiko teammates, Akashi is still in contact with the Rakuzan players that he had captained; especially the regulars when he was in his first year. Mayuzumi in particular.

As the guy is two years his senior, he is in his third year of college by this point. And during one of Rakuzan's old reunions at a bar just a few months ago, Akashi recalled Mayuzumi saying something about serving his internship under Shige's father, as the man was once the chief editor of a fairly popular magazine in Japan before he'd left to operate his own private investigation business.

With how things are going for Mayuzumi, Akashi is fairly certain that he will likely end up as a photographer instead of a writer, with how much he seems to like being behind the lens instead of a computer.

Akashi picked up his phone, scrolling down his list of contacts until he'd found Mayuzumi's name, and immediately picked the dial button. Three rings later, the call was answered.

"This is a surprise, Akashi," was Mayuzumi's greeting the moment he'd answered the call. "What can I do for you?"

"Must it be something?"

"I know you. You're always scheming something. So which poor soul has you riled up this time?"

Akashi sighed. "There's a favour I need to ask of you."

A/N: Apologies for the lack of updates for nearly a year. Let's just say I have several issues to handle in my personal life, and I'm simply in no mood to update any of my stories at all. Also my apologies for the shorter than usual chapter; but this chapter is mainly dedicated to the people around Tamaki and their worries and concerns about the 'stalker'. You'd likely see the Russian team's reactions next chapter and the focus will be back on Tamaki and co.

Anyway, I hope that you like this chapter, and please read and review! Reviews give me inspiration to update!
