Author's Note: So this was actually written last year, but I changed the date to 2017 every time they said 2016. Keep it with the times, people :)
Kara and Winn stood in the cold waiting for midnight to strike. Kara jumped up and down in an overtired, overexcited way to keep warm. Winn watched her enthusiasm, grinning.
Thanks to some surprising help from Cat Grant (I know, unlike her, right?) the two friends had a pretty good look at the glittering ball suspending in the air, ready to roll down the track.
"You know," Kara said, looking at the ball, "The first time I heard of the ball dropping, I thought it actually dropped and exploded over everyone." She giggled, "You should have seen my face when I finally decided to stay up 'till 12 and watch it T.V. I was so disappointed."
Winn laughed. "Yeah, my mom never let me stay up, but we would sometimes tape the entertainment and stuff, and watch it the next day." Kara gave a final big leap, going a bit farther than a normal human would, and Winn grabbed her arm. "I don't really think this is the time to be flying, Kara." He looked around to make sure no one had noticed.
"Sorry." Kara looked around, too. "I guess I got a little carried away."
"So," Winn said, changing the subject. "Do you have any New Years Resolutions?"
"Well," Kara lowered her voice, "I wan't to bring as many aliens and other criminals to justice as possible."
"Your doing great already," Winn smiled at her. "I think I resolve to... try new things."
"Wait, like, food?" Kara raised her eyebrow. "You already like everything!"
"Not necessarily food." Winn answered cryptically, and changed the subject again, "Hey, look at the clock! Only 2 more minutes to go! You ready for 2017?"
"Yeah, I think I am." Kara nodded. "I like New Years. It feels like a clean slate."
"Sure, until you make the same mistakes again."
"Winn."
"Just saying!" Winn shivered.
"Here, have my coat." Kara said.
"No."
"Winn, I don't get sick. You could. And anyways, blue lips are not a fashion statement." Winn rolled his eyes as he took the coat.
"Fine, as long as I get to do this." He put his arm around her and pulled close. Kara didn't say anything, but she didn't move either. Winn took that as a good sign. The two minutes passed comfortably, and soon, the countdown had started. Along with the crowd, Kara and Winn screamed;
"Ten! Nine! Eight! Seven! Six! Five!" Winn suddenly turned around and pulled Kara to him.
"Winn, what are you doing?" She breathed.
"I'm gonna kiss you when we say 'one'". Winn said with a very serious expression.
"Oh." Kara said faintly.
"Is that ok?"
"Yeah, I think it is." Winn smiled, and together they whispered,
"Three, Two, One."
People like myself say that the ball drop is a very romantic thing. And tonight it was. As the ball dropped down it's track, and the crowd around them cheered, as the clock struck midnight, and 2017 started, Winn kissed Kara.
Author's Note: There you have it! Happy New Years Eve everyone!
