Author's Note: Hey guys! So I was watching surface tension tonight and I just had a lot of really sad feelings so this really sad story happened. Kinda short but I had to get the emotions out somehow. Enjoy.

Spencer was reading a book on the couch when his mother's voice caught his attention. She was looking through one of her scrapbooks when a photo caught her eye. She frowned, trying to figure out who was in the frame. She looked up to her son, and called his name.

"Spencer?"

He looked up from his book. "Yeah Mom?"

"Who is that?" She asked, pointing to a person in the picture.

Spencer's smile faded when he saw who it was. It was his father.

He'd been thinking about how to handle this moment from the second his mother had been diagnosed with this devastating disease. Dozens of ways to put things had flashed through his mind. But none seemed right. Now that the moment was here, he wasn't sure what to do. He decided to start slowly.

"That's William Reid. He's your husband and my father."

She looked at him, studying his face. "He's my husband?"

Spencer nodded. "That's right."

"Why isn't he here?"

Spencer bit his lip. "That's complicated."

She looked at her son with a pleading gaze, imploring him to tell her more.

Spencer sighed. "He left the family a long time ago."

She seemed puzzled. "Why didn't we divorce?"

"I'm not sure."

"Tell me about him." She pressed.

"I can't really. I don't remember him well."

"Tell me what you do remember, then."

"He coached my little league team. And he liked reading Isaac Asimov."

"Did he love me?"

Spencer didn't hesitate to answer. "Yes. He did."

Diana ran a finger over the portrait of a smiling young couple.

Spencer barely heard her next statement. It was so low it could have been blended into a gust of wind.

"I wish I could remember you."

The words put a big lump in his throat.

"You will. Someday." He promised her, and squeezed her hand.

She smiled at him, and they both continued their activities.
