Chapter 07

Outmatched

Steven and Connie stared at this Dark Pearl. The first time they had seen her had been unsettling this situation was so much worse.

The enchanted(?) Gem raised an eyebrow at them and said "what no comments?"

That snapped them out of their stupor as they quickly got up and looked around. They were in a wide circular room with glowing red cracks on the ground here and there and only one way out via stairs which Dark Pearl stood in front of.

Steven and Connie touched hands and Dark Pearl moved forward to stop what she was sure Stevonnie entering play but that fear was for naught as pale pink and bright green light covered the two with the point of origin being Steven's gem and Connie's bag and as it faded the two were dressed in their guises as Fortune Lass and Rose Guard.

Dark Pearl raised an eyebrow "how cute" she says dryly as she tapped the spot next to gem on her breast as a stream of energy emerged from it before forming that super long sword of hers.

Connie fell back spreading her arms wide to focus her casting while Steven stepped forward shield out and up to hold the line freeing Connie to attack. Normally this would be a fine strategy but…

Dark Pearl made a single swipe with her sword and a single clean cut went right down Steven's shield cleanly breaking in it half and the inertia sent it to Steven's sides before it vanished into sparkles much to his wide-eyed astonishment.

Connie though had finished chanting as several bright green rings flew towards Dark Pearl as projectiles but in a move that would have been amazing if she was on their side she deflected or just cut through the attack with several stunning sword moves.

And as that exact moment it became clear this fight would be nowhere near easy…

Ray Ray ran through a hallway and emerged in another room identical to the one he had just left behind… Much like the last one he entered after getting separated from Steven and Connie and again like the second room he went the walls started spinning again forcing to jump out of the way lest he get hit before it stopped and Ray Ray just made a noise of frustration at this.

Clearly this "Pearl" or whoever it was behind all of this was WAY too smart for their own good. At times like this Ray Ray thought as he picked a doorway, he could adopt his sister's method of generally punching the way through magical problems.

Another thought he had as he ran along the hall was that he was in way over his head and that maybe just charging in here wasn't the best idea.

He entered yet another identical room and made a sound of frustration as the walls began to spin and then stopped as an idea hit him.

Maybe he could do something like his sister's method after all and he reached for his backpack…

BOOM!

That distant loud sound distracted Dark Pearl as she looked up towards the ceiling as Connie went flying.

She been flinging the girl around the room by grabbing her with an energy lasso projected from her sword and she been flinging her about.

This of course had happened after she had slammed Steven into a wall.

Within five minutes of this fight it had become dreadfully clear they were outmatched.

As Dark Pearl looked to the ceiling, she couldn't help but wonder what was that? Then:

"AHHHH!"

She turned and there was Steven encased in a bubble and charging clearly attempting to bulldoze her.

Dark Pearl was so unimpressed with this as she quickly drew her arm back and made a sharp jabbing motion with it into the bubble as he approached which pierced and burst it and sent him flying.

Then bright green ribbons came flying in wrapping around Dark Pearl's torso and binding her but again the Gem just gave her such an unimpressed look as she said in a flat tone "Unsquiera Despariot" and a wave of gray light just blew outward ripping the ribbons to shreds freeing Dark Pearl and sending the two back.

Connie just gaped "that, that was Gwendolyn's style of magic, how, how did you_"

Dark Pearl broke in with a scoff "Gwendolyn's magic" she snapped her fingers at Connie "Kemo Char."

And a ball of energy appeared and Connie was now dodging projectiles.

Then there was a whirring noise and Dark Pearl turned to see Steven's shield flung at her discus style.

She merely made another swipe and snapped it in half sending the two pieces to go flying past either side of her but as she looked for Steven she didn't see him and turning she realized that her spell had ended and now Steven and Connie were going to fuze!

As the two joined hands and that light began to shine Dark Pearl dashed forward energy sparking along her sword and she made another jabbing motion.

BOOSH!

That strange loud sound echoed down the hallway Ray Ray was in. Earlier when he had blasted the wall when they were spinning that had either broken the spell or defensive mechanism behind it and Ray Ray had traded the halls, he'd been navigating for news ones full of locked doors.

He's been running through them, trying doors, and calling for June or the others but to no avail.

Abandoning the door, he'd been trying Ray Ray ran down the hall towards that noise.

Dark Pearl stood in-between Connie and Steven from where the two had been thrown after Dark Pearl had disrupted their fusion. Steven looked to be out of it and Connie was looking at her in horror.

Dark Pearl turned her focus to Connie.

"Gwendolyn's style of magic, using fusion as the "cheap" trick Homeworld made it out to be, they're right. Homeworld was right humans are insignificant organics, and no good comes of them." Dark Pearl's face as she said was one of contempt, of hurt, of hatred.

"I am so glad my new masters are magnificent beings worthy of my loyalty. Not like Steven, not like Rose, not like_" she cuts herself off and then with a deep breath says "Goodbye Ms. Maheswaran."

Frozen in fear Connie watched as Dark Pearl raised her sword skywards energy crackling along the crystalline metal and then Connie found herself reacting on sheer panic as her hands swirling with green magic, she raised them up and thrust out in desperation as the sword swung down.

Then there was a horrible cracking sound like breaking glass… or crystal.

Author's Note: And that's chapter 7. Yup a cliff hanger ending I had that planned out, sorry, not sorry! This chapter is a bit short but again I had a plan and I stuck to it. I also managed the update by the end of the month after last months delay and I am so happy about that. There is a drawing that goes with the chapter that's up on the other sites I use if you wanna take a look. I am a bit worried I made Dark Pearl a bit OP but again I think this does work but if people could give me feedback on that I'd be grateful.
