"Where's mom?"
It was a simple question, but it brought Rick Grimes to a full stop. For a moment, his mind raced backwards, drawing up memories of before the turn. It was a question often asked in their old house in King's County, a question he hadn't heard in years. Rick glanced back at his son. Carl was standing on the porch, barely containing his excitement. Rick couldn't remember the last time Carl had smiled like this.
"She's down the road, talking to Aaron," Rick pointed off down the street to where Michonne had disappeared.
"We have to go get her," Carl was already jumping the banister, traipsing down the front lawn and down the street.
"Carl," Rick called after him, "Where's your sister?"
Carl turned around, still running backwards, a huge grin splitting his face. "She's inside. She learned something new. You should check it out." He spun on his heel and was gone, sprinting up the road.
Confused, Rick hurried inside, locating his daughter on the floor of the living room. She was happily playing with some toys, banging the blocks up and down. She lifted her curly blonde head when Rick approached her, smiling widely.
"Hey sweetheart," Rick bent down to kiss her, then sat beside her on the floor, wondering what Carl was talking about. He watched Judith for a moment, searching for some change. She played just as she always did, occasionally shoving toys at Rick so he could join in her game.
The front door banged open, the screen door bouncing off the frame. Rick almost shouted for Carl to be careful when he burst back into the room, Michonne in tow. She was as confused as he was, her lovely face contorted in concern. Carl all but dragged her in, tugging at her arm. Michonne wasn't as fast as she usually was, due in large part to her swelling belly. Rick stood up, intending to rescue his wife from his son. She gratefully took his hand, her other palm laid protectively over her stomach.
"What is it I just have to see?" she asked Carl, smiling bemusedly.
"This," he directed her to stand in front of Judith. Rick watched with baited breath while his son looked down at Judith expectantly.
"Judy," he called to her, drawing the young girl's attention. "Who's this?"
Judith glanced up, delight spreading across her face when she saw Michonne.
"Mama," she proclaimed this unceremoniously, reaching her hands out for Michonne to pick her up.
Rick caught Michonne's eyes, taking in her expression. It was a face that he had been privileged enough to see on only a few occasions, the teary-eyed smile that could only mean one thing. Michonne was unequivocally overjoyed.
Carl grinned at her, sweeping Judith proudly off the floor and depositing her into Michonne's arms. Judith continued babbling her first words, bouncing her hands on Michonne's shoulders.
"I told you Mom would want to see this," Carl teased his father. Rick's face cracked into an identical grin.
