Marinette DuPain-Cheng was a fascinating fifteen-year-old girl. She had blue eyes and matching hair, she was the class representative of the tenth year students at Collège Françoise Dupont, and, most spectacularly, she was a superhero.
Marinette was Ladybug, the magical girl superhero of Paris, France. She would regularly save the city from the diabolical Hawkmoth and his evil akumas. Marinette fought alongside her partner, Chat Noir, whose identity she was not aware of, due to her own insistence that the two heroes keep their personal lives separate.
One thing Marinette did know about her cat-themed associate, however, was his unfortunate infatuation with the most abhorrent kind of humor: puns. Chat was often spewing puns of some kind, whether he was flirting with the female hero, or when he was making cat-themed jokes, or even when he just thought of one on the fly, in the middle of a fight, he would spit a quick one-liner out.
And Marinette dreaded each one. She especially regretted hearing all those puns on one specific school day.
She was sitting in her spot, waiting for class to begin, when he walked in. Adrien Agreste – son of Gabriel Agreste, her fashion-designing hero – was a very important figure in Marinette's teenage melodrama. Marinette had developed affection for Adrien very early in her acquaintanceship with him. However, nothing ever developed between the two because of her crippling social anxiety that she only ever had around him. It certainly did not help matters that he was friends with –
"Chloe…" Adrien whined as he walked through the threshold of the classroom. Chloe Burgoise was hanging off of his arm, practically smothering him with her narcissism.
Chloe flicked her blonde hair over her shoulder as she went on about something involving her father – the mayor – and a distinct social event going on that Friday when it happened.
Adrien had just managed to escape Chloe's grasp and sit down in his seat, located right in front of Marinette's, when Marinette said it much to her own horror.
"Oh, Chloe, give it Agreste already."
Silence reigned in the room for two full seconds as everyone drank in the imperative, and slowly, Marinette's face melted into a countenance that showcased pure revulsion. Why did I just say that?! Ooh, Chat, I'm blaming you for this.
A chortle echoed, breaking the quiet.
Snickering, Adrien turned around to look at Marinette, "Heh, good one."
