From the day she met him when she was nine years old, Lily knew Severus was her soulmate. The initials on her wrist read S.S. There could have been many S.S's in the world, but when her green eyes met his impossibly dark obsidian eyes, something stirred within her.
And the initials on his wrist were L.E., and that just made sense. Their connection was there, and they belonged together.
They were always together, and the fact they both had magic just strengthened their bond.
On September 1st, Lily basked in the daylight as she walked hand-in-hand onto the train with Severus. They were starting this new adventure together. She was nervous, but she knew that as long as she had Severus at her side, she'd be okay.
"Are you okay, Lily?" he asked quietly as they were pushed by others who were in a hurry to get to their compartment.
Lily smiled. Severus always knew when something was bothering her. "Just a bit nervous about going to a new school. Before today, you were the only one I knew that had magic. What if I'm not smart enough to keep up with everyone else, especially the ones who grew up knowing about magic?"
Severus gave her hand a squeeze. "Trust me. There will be a lot of Muggle-borns who are just like you. And you don't have to worry about not being smart enough. You're the smartest girl I know."
Lily blushed. "Thanks, Sev."
And Severus had been right. She flourished in her classes. While Severus was the top student in Potions—he just seemed to have a natural affinity for the subject—she was second in Potions and top in Charms and Transfiguration.
They were happy. Of course, there were some annoying pests like the Marauders, especially James, who didn't seem to understand that her soulmate was Severus. He didn't like his own soulmate, a Slytherin girl in their year, and he thought that she must not like her own Slytherin soulmate, so the two of them should just get together.
She made sure to hex him good for that suggestion.
Severus and she stayed strong. No matter what they faced, they faced together. Things changed during their sixth year, though.
One day, she came upon him, and there was a strange shadow of hurt blanketing his eyes. "What's wrong?"
"I'm being recruited by Malfoy."
Lily felt her breath catch. She knew what that meant. There was only one thing that Malfoy could possibly want to recruit Severus for. "You can't say yes."
"If I don't, they'll get dangerous?"
"Get dangerous?" she hissed. "Are you forgetting they kill Muggle-borns like me? How can you even consider joining them?"
"Because they'll kill you if I don't. They've already implied it."
Lily grabbed his hand. "Joining isn't the way. We'll go to Dumbledore to get help."
"And you think he'll actually help me?" he asked disbelievingly.
Lily met his eyes with her own steady stare. "Yes, I do. Let's go."
And she pulled him after all. She and Severus would be together until they died. And she would make sure they weren't going to die anytime soon.
