Chapter 10: Alliance
Nov. 2nd, 1997 – Sunnydale High Library – 2:00 pm
SG-1 returned to the library and found everyone was there waiting.
"So," Xander said.
"So," Jack echoed. "General Hammond wants to talk to all of you in person."
"Would it be possible to to …" Daniel said.
"Beam there?" Jenny asked. "Of course."
Twenty minutes later after beaming straight to the entrance of Cheyenne Mountain, SG-1 was leading everyone through the mountain that housed Stargate Command. As they passed checkpoints, the guards wanted to confiscate Tara's lightsaber. She refused to hand it over.
"Good afternoon," Hammond said as they walked into the briefing room on sub-level twenty eight. "I am Major General George Hammond. Before we go too deep into everything. I need you all to sign non-disclosure agreements."
"Why?" Harmony wondered.
"What we do here is classified. Only the folks who work inside this mountain know about what you all faced Halloween night."
The ground from Sunnydale looked at each other. "I don't think so," Buffy said. "We could have gone public at any time, General, that we wanted. Shoot once we regained our memories we could have moved the ships back in orbit along with the Star Forge, our base. News media is already talking about the Valkyrie as it is large enough that it was seen from the ground by civilian telescopes. This is not something you can sweep under a rug by signing an NDA."
"I myself have diplomatic immunity," Giles said. "I am the represenatitive of an international organization. You can't make me sign the NDA."
"Then you can leave."
They looked up to find Senator Kinsey standing at the door to the briefing room.
"The NDA's are non-negotiable," Kinsey said.
"Senator," Hammond said, "what brings you here?"
"They do," Kinsey said. "I also came because I believe the Senate of the United States has some jurisdictional claim to those spaceships. Since they did appear in space over the continental United States. It would give the Senate some claim over the Valkyrie, Basestar, Prometheus and and the capture Goa'uld vessel, and everything aboard them, and as a member of the United States Senate, I hereby order your people," he looked at the Sunnydale group, "to surrender the ships and your claims to them to us, as the prevailing governmental authority on site. And since you all, with the exception of Mr. Giles, are American citizens I highly suggest you do that."
"I beg your pardon, Senator," challenged Joyce as she let her true identity of Kitana out. , "we don't answer to you or the U.S. Senate …"
"I beg your pardon."
"I am Ptincess Kitana of Edenia in the galaxy of Andromeda," Joyce said. "First off those ships have sentient beings on them. Those people will of course have first claim on the ships. Second my daughters, their friends, Rupert and Jenny waged a battle in space against the Goa'uld, capturing a great many of their warriors and their one of their ships in the process. They also were able to retrieve SG-1 and Master Bra'tac."
"Do not presume to imply that you can force your authority upon us," Jenny added. "We may be Americans, but that does not give you carte blanche to bully us into handing over the ships. On an added note we will use all three ships in defense of Earth, and have the training on them to do so, and we will not pledge ourselves to the allegiance of any one particular nation."
"To that end, we are prepared to discuss terms with the U.S. government," Buffy said, "which I hope we can accept on a mutual basis. This will involve an exchange of information and technology in good faith on both our parts, yours as well as ours. We can help you bolster your military capability against the Goa'uld and other races that may pose a potential threat to the safety of Earth and humanity in general. They are not American spaceships, nor British, nor Japanese or Chinese; they are Republic Defense Force spaceships. The crews of the ships all agreed to join the RDF. And that the RDF is going to be recognized as a separate, sovereign entity, equal to and independent of any one nation's or organization's control."
Kinsey frowned. He had no intention of leaving the ships in anyone elses hands but his own.
"Princess Summers," Hammond said as he paid specific attention to the fact that Buffy being Joyce's daughter would also be nobility. "You mentioned something about an exchange of technology and information. What sorts of information and technology are you offering?"
"Medical technology and equipment, first and foremost," Buffy said, "or at least the means to produce it, shall be given freely and openly to any nation that asks for it. With time we would give you weapons technology and the schematics to build fighter craft. The end goal here is free and open trade with the nations of Earth to the limits of our ability, and to that end we are willing to go before the United Nations and petition the representatives of the leading nations for the independent sovereignity. Since you're here, Senator, I suppose I could start by asking you to take my request for volunteers to come serve aboard the ships to the President."
"Just a minute," Kinsey started, "I don't think the President can just unilaterally approve an alliance with a foreign power."
"Senator, with all due respect," interrupted Jenny, "you are not the commander in chief of the U.S. armed forces; that duty belongs exclusively to the President as per the Constitution of the United States, so the decision is his to make. General Hammond can convey our request to the President as he has been doing already."
Hammond nodded. "The President has briefed me on everything that happens in Sunnydale and he himself has asked that I pursue negotiations for a treaty."
Kinsey frowned. He would have to get those ships some other way. And then he smiled. He looked at the group and nodded. Buffy Summers was instrumental to Sunnydale's protection. If she disappeared … He turned and left Hammond's office.
"If you intend to go to the U.N. and be recognized as a sovereign entity," Hammond said. "It might be a good idea to wait for any formal relations between us. But that is up to you."
"Why don't you tell those of us who don't know what is going on?" Joyce suggested.
"If I may ask first," Hammond said. "You are from the galaxy of Andromeda, right?" Joyce nodded. "I assume since you have been to our galaxy before now. You have."
"Yes the Empire has encountered the Goa'uld," Joyce said.
"Very well. As I told Princess Summers, Captain Calendar and Ms. Chase on Halloween night. The beings you all faced in orbit are the Goa'uld and their Jaffa warriors. During one of our first trips through the Stargate …"
"The what?" Giles interrupted.
"The Stargate," Hammond said as he motioned towards a window.
Everyone except Joyce, Buffy, Jenny, Cordelia, SG-1 and Hammond got up and looked through the window down at a ring shaped device.
"That is the Stargate," Sam said. "With it we are able to travel to other worlds through an artificially created wormhole."
"Two years ago Jack and I were part of the initial team that managed with my help to open the Stargate," Daniel said.
"Where was it found?" Giles asked, he had the sneakiest feeling he had seen or read something about this Stargate in the Watcher's Diaries.
"Giza," Joyce said. "Where it had been buried for thousands of years."
Giles looked at Joyce with surprise as as he remembered what he had read. "The Chappa'ai?" he asked.
"The Chappa'ai," Joyce answered with a nod.
"How do you two know that word?" Jack asked.
"It is what this Stargate is referred to in the Watcher's Diaries," Giles said.
"If it's in …" Buffy said. "That mean's …"
"Yes," Giles said. "The Slayer likely fought these Goa'uld before. There is record of some kind of parasitic demon about five thousand years ago."
"The Goa'uld are parasitic," Sam said. "They need a host to survive. They burrow in and take control of the host and set themselves up as Gods."
"It is likely these Goa'uld are the demons that the Slayer faced back then," Giles said. "Then there was a war and the parasitic demons were driven out of our dimension."
"That was when the Chappa'ai was buried," Joyce said as SG-1 and Hammond looked at her. "I may look like I am in my thirties, but I am actually about twenty thousand years old. I was actually on Earth when Ra left and the gate was buried."
"And now," Giles said, "they've returned because they unburied the Chappa'ai. And nearly destroyed us the other night. Maybe we should stop this now ..."
"Rupert," Jenny said. "We're not backing away from this. Halloween night set us on this path, and we all agree that there is a reason for those particular ships. The Republic is going to be created for the defense of Earth just as the Slayer defends against the forces of darkness."
"That said we will not leave Sunnydale unguarded," Joyce added as she looked at Hammond.
"I have been authorized to offer what assistance you need in Sunnydale," Hammond said.
Giles thought it over and then nodded in agreement. He could see their point. Besides if the U.S. government was willing to offer its assistance in Sunnydale with a group specially trained … Even the Watcher's Council had specially trained groups that dealt with supernatural threats in other parts of the world.
They all agreed to help each other out. The SGC would setup a small base in Sunnydale, where the Sunnydale group could go for weapons and medical attention as needed. And in return they would help fight the Goa'uld.
After the meeting the majority of the Sunnydale group returned to Sunnydale. Buffy, Jenny, Cordelia and Joyce beamed themselves, SG-1 and Hammond to the Prometheus and began showing them around the ships.
"How do you enter hyperspace?" Sam wondered.
"None of us have hyperspace capability," Jenny said.
"Yet," Joyce said. "With the Star Forge and the fact that the ships will be refitted, they eventually be able to travel in hyperspace."
"Till then," Jenny said. "The main means of faster than light travel for the Prometheus is warp drive."
"The Valkyrie and the Basestar's FTL are similar," Buffy said.
"Meaning both can jump from point a to point b," Cordelia said.
"By folding space?" Sam asked.
"Essentially, yes," Buffy said.
When they got to the flight desk of the Valkyrie they stopped in front of a Viper. "Viper's?" Jack asked. "They look similar to the ones seen in Battlestar Galactica."
"That's right," Buffy said. "Valkyrie has a full compliment of Viper's."
"That is by far not the only fightercraft we have," Cordelia said. "The Basestar has Cylon Raiders. But our Raiders will look nothing like what was seen on that old television show."
"As evidenced by the Centurians that accompanied you when you rescued us," Daniel said.
"Exactly," Cordelia said.
When they got to the brig of the Valkyrie they were shown the captive Jaffa. Teal'c approached them but most of the Jaffa refused to join the Republic, a few did, about twenty in all. The remaining Jaffa would be taken to Chulak. They knew that releasing them meant they would see those Jaffa again. But till they had a prison built they could not house them indefinitely on the any of the ships.
