Xtremexavier15: Fair enough on thinking the chapter was boring. I agree with you on both points about Lightning.

SideshowJazz1: Yeah, it feels like Lightning was supposed to be out much sooner. It would've helped Scott's strategy to make his team physically weaker. Glad you liked the three strikes thing, I thought it was a nice touch. Dawn is definitely making progress. So far she's only seen positive stuff, and is only now beginning to suspect things aren't what they seem. Mike willingly letting Vito take over made sense to me. In the early All-Stars episodes, he seemed more comfortable with his team knowing about his alters, which in turn let him channel them more effectively. That's what I wanted to show here- it's like Elsa and her ice magic. Fear led to no control, while no fear led to control.

VickyT36: We'll have to see if she does.

The Legendary Dragon Reaper: Thanks for understanding my decisions regarding Lightning. To answer your question, I changed it because I'm playing Owen in an RP with my friends and most of us changed our pics to match the character we're playing.

AnonBrowser: Team Maskwak really does need to get their act together. The question about Scott dropping his plans is will he do that? While having the win-loss ratio more even would be fairer, having it so slanted sadly reflects real reality shows where some teams just can't win. Glad you liked the Mike/Zoey bonding and nice to hear some sympathy for Dakota's situation. Dakota is definitely going to be involved later. How will be seen.

Acosta perez jose ramiro: Yeah, Mike using his alters more freely is something I wanted to see more from canon All-Stars (among lots of other things). Early episodes were going in the right direction with Manitoba digging and attempting to use Svetlana for dodging leeches. Good theory on Lightning lasting so long; I think it more had to do with sheer luck. And yeah, Zoey's background has been my headcanon for ages. It explains why she's so athletic yet is unpopular; her style choices and preferences factor in too.

Moonstone210: Glad to have a happy reader.

Witchinmoonlight: Cameron's thing is canon info. Right after the first half of episode 2, Cameron accidentally confesses to wearing diapers until he was eleven. Glad you like the episode title. Yeah, Zoey was due for some development. I'm happy that what I came up with is relatable. Yep, Brick tries to deny it, but he's into Jo. Canon did a little with Mike willingly switching alters, and I wanted to do a little more. Dakota is learning the tough world of working first jobs. And yeah, Dawn has seen only positive things so far, it's time for her to see negatives. I'm pretty proud of Lightning's elimination referencing sports since it's so fitting. Jo would probably count as a jock for Zoey, but Brick probably wouldn't since he's more military-oriented instead of sports.

Gman456: Surprise!

Joel Connell: This story is full of surprises. Yep, Dawn is becoming more aware of Total Drama's darker sides. Happy 3rd anniversary, story! Man, time flies.

Crosshot: Thanks! I'm trying to improve things from canon that might've been lackluster. Lightning leaving while Dawn is still around will definitely change things up.

Luna: Thanks! I enjoyed the challenge foreshadowing. If it weren't for canon, people would probably be like 'what's that thing going to be for?' Yes, I did intentionally reference the waffles line, both to expand on it and because I agree with them too. Such dorks talking about waffles… Scott will definitely have to move carefully now that Dawn suspects him.

That British Guy: A little dark for a wish, don't you think?

Critica7: Really? I never thought they were that intellectual for challenges, just a lot of physical activity. Thanks for understanding why I cut him.

TurboTheRaichu: This game hurts people.

Derick Lindsey: Glad we agree on Lightning needing to go sooner than he did. Jo would've made more sense against Cameron since they've been butting heads from day two. Thanks for enjoying the foreshadowing, it was something fun I wanted to do when I got to this part of the story. The redhead intern is nobody. I just needed a way to describe him since you've got the short with glasses and the skinny one with braces. Scott has plans to take care of Dawn this round, don't worry. Jo is smarter than Lightning, so she's going to play smarter. I agree that Dawn and Zoey would probably be friends, but Scott kinda ruined that with him accusing Dawn of being a thief in canon. No coin flip here, but don't worry, Manitoba is coming. Thanks for pointing out the 'three strikes' thing also applies to how many times Lightning was in the bottom two. I didn't even realize that until you mentioned it. Hah, it worked out in two ways- matches with Jo and being in the bottom two. Fun!

SilentSinger948: Brick deserves all the respect. Yeah, as much as I love Zoey, she needed depth to why she doesn't have friends when she's so awesome. We'll see about Dawn and Scott. Glad you're okay with Lightning leaving.

BaseballCapClyde: I'm the opposite when it comes to Lightning. I still dislike him and how far he got, but I do appreciate the humor he brought to the table. It would be a good idea for Dakota to rejoin, wouldn't it? They could certainly use the extra hands. Interesting theory who might go next if the Floating Salmon's winning streak ends.

DarkWitch1999: Welcome aboard! Glad you're enjoying my writing. I really wanted to fine tune some things from canon where I could. Eh, if the ending is a bit predictable, as long as the elimination is good. Right?

Shuffollower: Maybe.

Friendly reminder that Cast Swap has a TVTropes page, and is always looking for improvements and additions. So if you have something to add, please go ahead and do so. With that out of the way, let's catch some monkeys!

Episode 6- Mo' Monkey, Mo' Problems

"Last time on Total Drama Pahkitew Island," Chris narrated over footage from the previous episode, including Jo ducking under Lightning's swing, and Dawn and Zoey's duel. "The teams battled in the Smash, Splash, 1-2-3 X Dash! Got to meet Scuba Bear, that's right, Scuba Bear!" The bear was shown interrupting the various duels. "Brick attempted to win Jo's respect by winning his duels, and Jo faced against Lightning in two rematches. Dawn began to suspect that Scott might not be the teammate she thought he was, and after Team Kinosewak won, was persuaded to boot Lightning after he couldn't win Team Maskwak any points." Lightning's two duels were shown, especially Jo smacking him into the lake during the second one. Finally, he was shown being fired out of the Cannon of Shame.

The recap footage ended, showing Chris standing in the regular meeting area. "We're down to eight, which is great, and it's soon to be seven. Who will go kaput, and who will stay put? Let's find out here on Total Drama Pahkitew Island!"

(cue intro)

The show faded in from the intro, and the camera revealed the episode would be starting with Dawn. Once again, she was foraging for breakfast. Carrying a basket, she walked around, looking at the various bushes and trees she passed. After several seconds of walking with pursed lips, she finally stopped and spoke.

"This is odd. I could have sworn the strawberry bushes were here the other day. Perhaps I took a wrong turn again," she mused softly, tapping her chin with a finger.

(Confessional- Dawn)

"For the past few days, I've been feeling as if I've gotten turned around. I've tried following my paths from the days before, but nothing is where it was when I found it." The moonchild explained, holding her basket in her lap. Frowning, she said, "I'm very in tune with nature, so a situation such as this is very concerning. I fear something may be off about this island."

When the static cut away, the junk pile from the first episode was displayed.

"Toaster," Mike could be heard saying as he chucked a toaster aside from a pile, "old juice carton," a thin carton was tossed away, "…strangely familiar coconut with a face drawn on it." Even with the odd description Mike gave him, Mr. Coconut was thrown from the pile, bouncing out of frame when he hit the ground. Groaning, Mike poked his head up from where he had been digging. "Find a fedora yet, Cam?"

"Not yet," Cameron called out from another pile, popping into view. "All I've been able to find are some wigs," he held up two familiar wigs worn by Heather, the black one she started the second season with and the red one with the bone in it she wore during the caveman movie challenge, "and this princess doll that looks like one of the contestants from earlier seasons." Dropping the red wig, he held up a moth-eaten Princess Beth doll with an arm and leg torn off.

Sighing, Mike dug back into the pile he was working on. "Well, we need to find a fedora, or some kind of hat. It's the only way I can bring out Manitoba. Since we're on an island, he'd give us a real boost in whatever we're doing to survive."

(Confessional- Mike)

"I have… four alternate identities," Mike admitted a bit slowly. "There's Chester, Svetlana, and Vito. You probably have already met those guys. Then there's Manitoba Smith, he's an adventurer, like that one famous movie guy named after a state in the US. We've been doing okay with surviving on the island, but if we could get Manitoba's help, living out here would be a breeze."

Mike continued to search through junk until he found a skateboard, smiling. "Hey, a skateboard! I wonder if it still rides." Spinning a wheel on the bottom, he watched as it fell off the board and clunked down into the pile. "Guess not," he deduced with a sad frown.

"Mike! I think I found one!" Cameron shouted from his pile, and Mike looked up to see the bubble boy holding a hat. "Is this a fedora? I'm not very familiar with the different types of hats."

Mike stared at the hat, a white hat with one side of the rim pinned to its side, in his friend's hands, and grinned. "Perfect!"

"Great job yesterday with foraging, Zoey." Brick praised as he and Zoey picked some food elsewhere in the woods. "You and Mike made some tasty selections."

"Thanks," Zoey beamed, looking at her teammate. "My dad likes to garden, so I help him pick some of the fruits and vegetables he grows."

"That's nice," Brick said, "my mom does the same thing." He picked a berry, examined it, and then put it in his basket. "So, was Mike a good foraging buddy? Yesterday was the first time he did this."

Finding a tree that held oranges, Zoey reached up to pick one. Seeing it was ripe enough to eat, she added it to her basket, along with a few more. "He was. We talked a lot, and discovered we like a few of the same things. It would've been nice to meet someone else who likes indie stuff, but Mike is really great, so I don't mind. Besides, the point of indie stuff is that it's so uncommon, you have to really dig if you want to find someone else who enjoys it."

"I understand that," Brick said. Looking over his shoulder, he continued, "So, are you and Mike starting to become a thing? Because I don't mind a relationship being in the platoon."

Zoey's grip slipped on an orange, and she fumbled to catch it when she heard the r-word. "Wait, relationship? Nonono, you must've misread something. Mike and I are just friends. That's all I came out here to look for." She blushed nearly as red as her hair, trying not to look at the cadet.

"Really?" Brick raised his unibrow in surprise. When Zoey nodded, he added, "Oh. My apologies then. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."

"It's okay. It was a valid question," Zoey replied. Hesitating for a moment, she spoke back up, "Funny that you mention a relationship, though. Is there something going on between you and Jo?"

Brick dropped his basket in surprise, his cheeks coloring like strawberries. "What?! What made you think that?" Kneeling down, he quickly collected the food that had spilled. Five second rule, and if it was more than five seconds, he could wash it off in a creek on the way back to their camp.

"Sorry, it's just that it seems like you two have some kind of tension going on whenever I see you two talk to each other," the indie chick replied. "The fighting over leadership of the team, you wanting to go on that morning run with her. Come on, Brick. Just because I'm one of the most unpopular girls at my school doesn't mean I'm not aware of things."

"Uh…" Brick found nothing to say in response to that.

(Confessional- Brick)

"Zoey knows that I have feelings for Jo?" Brick asked the camera before groaning. Putting a hand to his face and pulling it down, he said, "Here I thought I was being subtle. I just hope she doesn't go and tell Jo about it. That would be embarrassing."

(Confessional- Zoey)

"I think it's sweet that Brick likes Jo," she admitted, fixing her pigtails as she talked. "Jo is so cold to everyone, so maybe having a guy interested in her will convince her to warm up a bit. I'm not going to tell her, if that's what you're thinking, it's not my secret to tell."

Elsewhere in the woods, Scott was pacing around a stump. "Think, Scotty, think. With only two teammates left, how can you get them eliminated? We're down to…" He stopped to count on his fingers. "Eight people left, so the merge has to be soon." He heard a groan, and stopped pacing to watch Sam stumble through the bushes. The gamer sat down on the stump Scott had been circling. "Bad day?"

Slouched over on the seat, Sam glanced up at him. "Majorly. My last console was confiscated yesterday, so I haven't played a video game in nearly twenty-four hours, and I missed a chance to impress Dakota."

Scott shrugged. "Eh, I'm no stranger to bad days. There was that power outage for a week when I was six, the heat shutting down for two weeks that one winter when I was eight, and that week I got food poisoning because Pappy didn't clean the raccoon good enough. It'll pass."

"I hope so," Sam said. Then he stared at Scott strangely, blinking. "Uh, is it just me or do you look a little pixel-y?"

"What are you talking about?" Scott asked, genuinely confused.

The perspective changed to Sam's, which showed Scott in a blocky style similar to early video games. The perspective reverted to the side view, and Sam rubbed his eyes before looking at Scott again. From his view, Scott looked normal once more.

"Never mind, I think I was just seeing things," Sam said.

Scott started to give him a weird look when the loudspeakers screeched on. "Hey teams," the host announced, "proceed to the meeting area. It's time for me to laugh at your pain. There will also be a challenge."

Sam stood up from the stump, pumping a weary fist. "Alright! Let's win this level instead of lose it!" He walked off, passing Scott on the way.

The devious guy watched Sam go, and tapped his chin evilly. "Lose? I think I know what to do." Chuckling to himself, he followed his teammate.

A flash forward showed the campers arriving at the meeting area. Along with Chris and Chef, also at the meeting area was a wooden box on a post, and a vending machine that had Total Drama's infamous snack, Chef Hatchet's Total Drama Yum Yum Happy Go Time Fish Tails, on its sign.

Jo, Mike, and Cameron were the first ones to arrive at their log bench on the left side of the screen. Jo sat on the end closest to the meeting area's center, and Mike and Cameron sat down beside her in that order. As Scott and Sam sat down on their team's bench on the other side, Jo sent a skeptical glance around the place.

"Okay, do I need glasses as big as String Bean's, or is this island playing mind games?" the jockette questioned, getting confused looks from the two boys on her bench. She proceeded to point at something in the background. "Those trees were closer a few days ago, and that mountain wasn't there yesterday."

Cameron followed her finger, and squinted before his eyebrows shot up. "Hey, she's right! I've developed keen senses of observation from growing up in a bubble, but how did I miss that?"

Looking annoyed, Chris retorted with hands folded over his chest, "I think you both need your eyes checked. Everything around here has been the same since day one."

Scott snickered, and nudged Sam with his elbow. "Looks like you're not the only one having an off day."

Mike frowned at Scott's teasing. "Hey! Cam and Jo aren't crazy. If they both say something is different, then I believe them." He rested a consoling hand on Cameron's shoulder.

"Wait, seriously?" Jo asked, looking shocked. When she saw Mike give her a thumbs-up, she stared at him in disbelief. "Wow. Most people who know me would take the chance to make fun of me. Thanks, Spikey Mikey."

(Confessional- Jo)

"A lot of people don't like me," Jo stated plainly. "Mostly because they don't like how I 'boss them around too much' or 'give them annoying nicknames'. Back home, I don't let my guard down because I know if I do, they'll take the opportunity to tear me down like they claim I do to them. Having someone stand up for me like that was pretty surprising."

A few minutes had passed, and Chris was looking irritably at his watch. "I'm giving Brick, Zoey, and Dawn one more minute. Then they're cannon food."

"You can't do that," Jo argued, pointing at the host. "You've let contestants skip out on challenges before."

"Yeah? Name one!"

"Leshawna and Izzy, biking challenge," Jo rattled off immediately.

Clearly stumped, Chris grumbled, "…I only asked for one."

"I'm here!" Dawn called out, and everyone looked to see Dawn run in from the woods. "My apologies. I got a little turned around, and had to find my way back to our campsite to drop off our food."

"That's one whole team here," Chris noted with slight approval, "now where's-?"

"Brick McArthur, reporting for duty!" Brick shouted, hurrying onto the scene and sitting down on his team's bench.

"Sorry we're late, one of those moose from the first day forced us to go around," Zoey informed the host.

(Confessional- Zoey)

"Just how big is this island? I haven't seen a moose in days," the indie chick remarked.

Since everyone was present, Chris started to explain the challenge. "Today's challenge is called Snack Attack," he informed them and gestured to the vending machine, "this machine only takes gold coins. The first team to get their gold coin in the machine wins, and gets something to eat."

Scott raised a brow. "What's the catch? That sounds too easy."

"I was hoping one of you would say that," Chris replied cheekily, raising a finger. "Chef?"

The cook opened the wooden box, revealing a pair of monkeys.

"I'm giving the coins to Alphonse and Betty here," the host said, flicking two gold coins to the monkeys, one to each. Once each monkey caught a coin, they hopped down from the box. "Who are now going to run away."

The two monkeys scurried off into the woods, passing the Floating Salmon along the way.

"They're getting away," Brick noted rather obviously.

Scott was on his feet in an instant, pointing at the monkeys. "Let's get 'em!"

Chris held out his hands, having predicted they would rise immediately to give chase. "Stop! Nobody move! The monkeys get a head start. Kinosewak's monkey has a blue necklace, and Maskwak's monkey is in the pink one."

"I knew there was a reason the Earth mother wanted me to bring this," Dawn said, pulling out a banana for Scott and Sam to see.

Spotting this from across the meeting area, Mike smirked at his team. "They may have a banana, but we have a secret weapon too." Pulling out the fedora, he showed it to his team.

Jo scoffed. "How's a hat supposed to help us?"

Cameron answered brightly, "You'll see."

As the teams planned their search, Chris brought out his air horn. "Okay, you can go after your monkeys riiiiight now!" He pressed the horn, signaling the challenge had begun.

The Confused Bears were first to rush off after their monkey. The Floating Salmon stood from their bench, but waited as Mike put on the fedora. He did the usual deep gasp that indicated he was switching identities, and a wily grin formed on his face.

"G'day, folks!" The new identity tipped his hat to the other team members. "The name is Manitoba Smith."

Jo rolled her eyes. "Great. Nice to meet you too. Listen up, hatstall." She pointed in the direction the monkeys went. "We have to hunt down a monkey that has a coin we need. Can you track it?"

"Do koalas eat eucalyptus?" Manitoba jested. "This will be easier than picking a fight with a dingo. Follow me." He ran off after the monkey, and his team tailed him.

Dawn stopped before her team got too far from the meeting area. "We should split up. We'll cover more ground looking for the monkey if we do that."

"Great idea, Dawn. It'll be just like Monster Catchers," Sam said, coming up next to her.

Looking back over his shoulder sneakily, Scott pointed behind him with his thumb. "I'll head back to our campsite and grab a few more bananas so Sam and I have one too. Just in case we find it instead of you." He turned heel, and jogged away.

Dawn pursed her lips at how eager Scott was to leave his teammates. "Perhaps splitting apart wasn't the right call."

Sam shrugged. "I thought it was good." An idea came to him, and he perked up. "In fact, I think I have an idea of how to find the monkey. Meet up with you later." Hurrying past Dawn, Sam went off to execute his own strategy for the challenge.

(Confessional- Sam)

"Trust me, I know a way to figure out where the monkey went," Sam said, rubbing at his eyes. Once he finished, he smiled. "Though, if I also get to visit with Dakota in the process, then that's an added benefit."

Team Maskwak's monkey with the pink necklace, Betty, sat on a rock by a river flowing through the island. As she marveled at her shiny coin, she heard movement behind her, and turned around. Dawn had found her, and had the banana she showed Scott and Sam in hand.

"Hello there, Betty," Dawn greeted with a friendly smile. She extended the banana towards the monkey. "Care for a tasty snack in exchange for the shiny coin?"

Betty looked between the coin and the banana, chittering to herself, and then snatched the banana with her free hand. She jumped down from the rock she was sitting on, and scurried past Dawn.

"Betty, no! That's not how a trade works!" Dawn admonished, reaching out for the little monkey. Betty got to a tree, and after using her tail to hold the banana, began to climb up the tree. Dawn hurried over to the base of the tree, prepared to climb it, and could only watch in stunned horror as Betty ate the coin. "Noooo!" She cried out as Betty climbed higher.

Chris walked through the woods, eyes closed as he whistled a tune. If he had his eyes open, he would've seen Scott running up to him with a devious smirk on his face. The teen purposefully collided with the host, knocking the man onto his backside. Scott took a step back, raising a hand to rub his head. Chris also rubbed his head, and opened his eyes to scowl at him.

"Whoops. Sorry, man," Scott apologized as Chris got himself up again, dusting dirt off his clothes. "I was in such a rush to get back to my team's camp and get more bananas to bargain with the monkey that I didn't see you." The devious teen let that sink in before continuing, "You wouldn't have happened to see the monkey, did you?"

"If I did, I certainly wouldn't tell you," Chris snapped irritably, "especially after that."

Scott snapped his fingers. "Darn it. Thought I could exploit a loophole. Guess I'll see you back at the vending machine." Not waiting for a response from the host, he hurried on his way.

Chris watched Scott leave with an annoyed glare. "That kid is a real piece of work."

(Confessional- Scott)

Holding his hands behind his back, Scott chuckled to himself. "In one hand, I have Chris's cellphone," he revealed as he pulled one hand out that held a touchscreen smartphone, a major upgrade compared to the flip phone that Topher found in the fourth season. "And in the other, I have Chris's wallet," he continued, pulling the other hand out, a leather wallet almost identical to the one Duncan had stolen the previous season but darker in his grasp. Shoving them into his pockets, he explained, "Dawn's been starting to get on my case, and I'm not sure if I can convince Sam to vote her out. So I figured the next best thing would be to have Chris do the work of booting her for me. All I have to do is frame her, and Chris'll be so mad someone stole his stuff again, she'll be eliminated on the spot."

Team Kinosewak's monkey with the blue necklace, Alphonse, slipped through some bushes. Soon after he passed by, Manitoba came through. The adventuring identity looked around, and spotted Alphonse's blue necklace abandoned on the ground.

"Ha," he scoffed as he picked it up, "it's going to take more than shedding your accessories to-!" He trailed off when he noticed that the necklace had been dropped right in front of a tree full of monkeys. "Aw, crikey!"

A flash cut had Dakota trying to roll a giant, green metal ball through the woods. Sam came running up behind her, a big smile on his face.

"Dakota, there you are!" Sam said happily, and then blinked at what she was doing. "Whoa, what's with the giant ball?"

"Can't tell," Dakota grunted, trying to push it. "Just know. It's for tomorrow's challenge. Got to get it there," she panted with each push. Looking over to him, she gave him a pleading look. "Can you, like, help me push this? It's really heavy."

"Oh sure. Here," he went up beside her, and helped push the ball along. Whereas Dakota struggled to move it by herself before, their combined effort made it move easier. "So how has interning been?" He asked as they rolled the ball together.

"Lousy," Dakota answered, her voice exhausted. "I took your advice about all first jobs sucking, and tried to push through it. That hasn't been going so well. Since I'm the newest intern, the others have been giving me the toughest chores. Nobody even thanked me for getting their coffee orders, they nearly bruised my beautiful face when we prepared those dueling sticks from yesterday, and then they had the bright idea to have me watch the monkeys from today even though I've never handled an animal before in my life. Now, I'm stuck doing this despite having like no muscle."

"Sorry to hear it's been so rough," Sam sympathized. "I'm sure you'll get better chores soon. Anyway, I came to see if you knew where the monkeys went. Like, if they had a specific location they were supposed to hide at, or whatever."

The pair stopped rolling the ball for a break, and Dakota gazed at Sam apologetically as she wiped sweat from her brow. "Sorry, but us interns aren't allowed to help the contestants. I can't even tell you what kind of challenge this thing is for," she said, motioning to the ball. The heiress gave him a warm smile. "I appreciate you coming to see me, though. I missed talking to you yesterday."

Sam chuckled heartily. "Same. It would've been awesome if you could have watched us duel, even if I ended up embarrassing myself a bit." Looking over his shoulder, he pointed back the way he came. "I should get back to my team. Since we keep losing, we're really short on hands."

"Yeah," Dakota agreed, though she didn't seem too happy about losing her friend again. "Wouldn't want you to get voted out next, right?"

"Right. I'll let you get back to work." Turning on his heel, Sam jogged away with a wave back to the heiress. "See you later!"

"See you!" Dakota waved back brightly, and then sighed once he was out of sight and out of earshot. Returning her attention to the giant ball, she puffed up in determination, and struggled to push it again.

A flash cut finally returned to Dawn and Betty, the monkey eating the banana she had snatched from Dawn while she sat on a large boulder. Dawn stood before the monkey, pleading to her.

"Betty, please! You must regurgitate that coin," Dawn insisted with beckoning hands. "Not only is that coin not suitable for your digestive tract, my team also needs it in order to win the challenge and end our losing streak."

Scott wandered over to Dawn, shrugging carelessly. "Couldn't find those extra bananas. Something must've come by and taken them after you dropped them off at the camp site." Putting his hands on his hips, he asked, "Did you manage to bribe the chimp?"

Dawn shook her head, slightly offended by Scott's incorrect terminology. "Regretfully, no. Betty stole the banana instead of agreeing to trade for the coin. Now, the coin is inside Betty and we have no trading tool."

Scott lifted his hands in a helpless gesture. "Well, it's not like this challenge can get any tougher."

As if the universe wanted to prove a point to the devious teen, a bear emerged from behind the boulder Betty was sitting on. The two campers stepped back, screaming in fright as the bear swiped Betty up with a paw and swallowed her whole.

Dawn leered up at Scott. "Has anyone ever told not to tempt fate?"

Scott had the good grace to look ashamed. "I guess this challenge can get tougher," he admitted.

The bear then roared at them, and they began to scream again. A pause symbol appeared in the center of the frame, freezing the scene. The camera pulled back to show Chris and Chef watching the challenge on a monitor, the host actually a bit concerned for once.

"If this is the end for Team Maskwak, I don't think I could bear it," he joked to Chef, chuckling as the latter simply rolled his eyes at his co-worker. "What? Too hilarious?" Chef declined to answer that question, and walked away while Chris cut to commercial. "Want to see how angry a bear can get? Me too! So stay tuned to Total Drama Pahkitew Island!"

Like usual, the show faded to commercial on a zoomed out frame of the island.

When the show returned, Sam was stumbling around the forest. He was slouched over and rubbing at his eyes as he walked. "Ugh, I thought visiting Dakota gave me a second wind, but now I just feel tired again. Where even am I?" He pointed at a nearby rock. "I know I've seen that rock before, but where's the strawberry bush I saw next to it? It was there when I came through before. What's going on?" He heard a snorting huff, and looked behind himself. Standing there was a moose. Sam recognized the moose, or at least he thought he did.

The camera changed to Sam's perspective like before the challenge began, and everything was pixelated once more, including the moose. "Whoa, a real life Stomoose! Just like in Monster Catchers: Orange and Purple!" The moose did a scraping motion with one of its forelegs, signaling it was going to charge. Sam gulped. "Uh…"

As the camera switched back to the side perspective, with everything still pixelated, a prompt box appeared below Sam with four options.

Battle/Party/Pockets/Flee

An arrow appeared next to 'Battle' and hovered over the options until it reached 'Flee'. The arrow clicked on 'Flee'.

"Uh…" Sam stammered as he backpedaled away from the moose. "Gotta go!" He took off at a run, and exited the frame.

The prompt box now read 'SAM fled the battle… but the MOOSE still chases'. Proving the prompt box's point, the moose charged across the frame in pursuit.

With Team Kinosewak, the pixely-style of Sam's scene back to normal, Manitoba was still trying to identify which monkey was Alphonse, holding the blue collar loosely in his hand. "I'm not playing around, you little scrappies, which one of you has that coin?"

"Wait, so any one of these could be our monkey?" Zoey clarified as she, Cameron, Brick, and Jo all joined Manitoba at the base of the tree.

Jo shot Manitoba a glare. "Great hunting, snappy cappy. You've just made this challenge even more difficult."

Brick rested a hand on Jo's shoulder. "Easy, Jo. Manitoba did the best he could." He didn't even look hurt when she shoved his hand off. "Now it's up to us to help him out like any platoon would. We just have to show the monkeys who's large and in charge." Taking the collar from Manitoba, Brick stepped forward. "Your attention, monkeys! Alphonse, we know you're hiding up there! Surrender the coin, and we'll leave you alone!"

The monkeys growled at Brick's loud tone, and something brown was thrown at the cadet. In a few short seconds, Brick was covered head to toe in the stuff.

"Hey now," Brick complained, glaring sternly up at the monkeys. "Throwing mud is uncalled for."

"Mate, that ain't mud," Manitoba corrected him bluntly. Zoey and Cameron seemed to catch on pretty quickly, and they both grimaced. Jo took a second, but she too figured it out and raised a hand to cover her snickering mouth.

Brick looked at Manitoba in confusion. "What do you mean? What else could they…?" Trailing off as he figured out what else was brown. The camera cut away to the tops of the forest, where a loud yell from Brick shook the birds enough they flew away.

(Confessional- Jo)

The jockette continued to hide her snickers behind a hand, and then she couldn't hold back anymore, and let out a full laugh.

Sam ran through the forest, panting heavily. "I know you can't flee every fight in the games, but now I'd really really like to do that!" Spotting a tree with a bee hive, the gamer dove behind it.

The moose charged right at the tree, shaking it considerably. A prompt box appeared, reading 'MOOSE used CHARGE. It missed.' The beehive fell down from the tree branch it was tethered to, and snapped open on the moose's head. The moose attempted to shake them away, but the swarm had it surrounded. The prompt box now read 'BEES used STING. It was very effective.'

Sam peeked out from behind the tree, and watched the moose get attacked. His eyebrows shot up, a thought entering his mind.

A flash switched back to the Floating Salmon, where Cameron stood before his team, offering an idea of his own.

"Monkeys are among humans' closest evolutionary relatives," Cameron said with a point of his finger in the air. "They try to do what we do because they see us so advanced in comparison and want to be like us."

"Meaning?" Jo asked, rolling her wrist as if telling him to get to the point. Beside her, Brick was clean of the not-mud.

"In order to figure out which monkey is our monkey and has our coin," Cameron answered, "we need to play Monkey See, Monkey Do. They mimic our behavior, and we trick them into giving us the coin."

His teammates looked at each other, and murmured their agreement to the plan.

(Confessional- Cameron)

"I've read books on a lot of subjects in my bubble," Cameron said, standing in the outhouse confessional. "Among the many subjects were wilderness survival tips, psychology, and animal biology. It's all really fascinating, and I'm glad I get to use all that knowledge while I'm out here." A butterfly slipped into the outhouse, and Cameron noticed it, his eyes lighting up. "No way! A danaus plexippus- the monarch butterfly!" The butterfly landed on his head, and his head tilted back. "Gah, so heavy!" His back soon gave out, and he was leaning back on the outhouse seat at an uncomfortable angle.

Scott and Dawn were back at the river bank where Dawn found Betty, and the bear sat in front of them, using a toothpick to clean out the wedges between its teeth.

"Can't you talk to animals or something? Tell the bear to cough up the monkey so you can tell the monkey to cough up the coin," Scott said to Dawn.

Dawn glanced up at him. "I'm not sure if that'll be possible. Bears are some of the more uncooperative animals, and I already had trouble trying to convince Betty to cough the coin back up. I'd try to offer the bear something to eat, but we don't have anything, and it's already eaten Betty so it's probably not hungry."

(Confessional- Dawn)

"I've never suffered this much misfortune in a row before," the moonchild admitted, "the losing streak, getting lost in the forest, and now trouble connecting with the wildlife." She tapped a finger for each instance of bad luck she experienced. After she was finished counting, she lowered her hands to her lap. "If only I could detect whether this is connected to the bad sensation I'm starting to pick up from the island, or the darkness I sense from Scott."

"Well, unless we can figure out something fast. We're hosed, again," said Scott, folding his arms over his chest.

"There you guys are!" Dawn and Scott whirled around at the sound of Sam's voice. "Finally found you!" Their jaws dropped open when they saw Sam riding on the back of the moose that had been chasing him. "Meet Montana the Moose! Poor guy got stung by bees while chasing me," he explained as he softly patted the moose's head. "I figured it was probably my fault, so I helped get all the stingers out. Turns out an act of kindness like that gets an animal to like you." He chuckled as he dismounted Montana, and joined his team. "So, where's the monkey?"

Scott pointed at the bear. "Inside him, and the coin is inside the monkey."

Sam's eyebrows shot up in shock. "Whoa? Really?" He looked at Dawn for confirmation, and she sadly nodded. Sam hummed, trying to think. An idea came to him, and he turned back to Montana. "Montana, I'm going to need a favor."

Montana huffed.

Back at the monkey tree, the monkeys were getting annoyed by the team's constant presence.

"Hey, monkeys!" Zoey called out from the ground. "Try and do what we do!"

"Wave your hands in the air!" Brick ordered, waving his arms up and down as his team copied the action. The monkeys saw what they were doing, and chittered excitedly as they did the same.

"Jump up and down like a kangaroo!" Manitoba said next, jumping up and down in place. The rest of the team did the same. Once more, the monkeys did what they did.

Jo reached into the pocket of her hoodie, and withdrew a silver coin. "Now, flip a coin!" Her team fished out coins of their own, and they all flicked their coins to the ground. Only one monkey in the crowd was able to do the last action. Alphonse flipped the coin, and it fell down into Jo's waiting hand. "Hah! You just got played, sucker!"

The other monkeys glared at Alphonse, who facepalmed at falling for the trap.

"Hurry! Back to the vending machine!" Cameron yelled, pointing in the direction they needed to go. He and his teammates fled, leaving the collarless Alphonse with the rest of the monkeys.

Back at the river, Dawn and Scott stood behind Sam, who stood behind Montana.

"Alright, Montana!" Sam said in a serious tone, pointing at the bear. "Let's battle!"

The prompt box reappeared with the four options.

Battle/Party/Pockets/Flee

The arrow pointed next to 'Battle', and clicked on it. There was a flash as the world pixelated. The perspective changed to over Sam's pixelated shoulder with Montana in front of him. Across from them, the bear stood.

'A wild BEAR has appeared. SAM sends out MONTANA.' The prompt box read.

"Montana, use Charge!" Sam commanded as the pixel style reverted to the normal style and to the side.

Montana scraped his foreleg like when he was going to charge at Sam earlier, and rushed across the beach. The bear raised its forepaws and grabbed Montana's antlers.

Sam pumped a fist. "Go, Montana! Don't hold back!" Behind him, Scott's eyebrows shot up in surprise while Dawn clasped her hands over her mouth in horror.

The bear growled as it tried to keep Montana from ramming it over. Montana pushed and pushed. Eventually, Montana overpowered the bear, and knocked it onto its back.

"Yes!" Sam cheered. "Now use Stomp on the bear's gut to force the monkey back out."

Montana did as instructed, and used both front hooves to press down on the bear's stomach area. The bear coughed out something that was most definitely not Betty. It was actually a license plate. The three campers cringed at the disgusting sight.

"Uh, keep going?" Sam suggested to the moose.

Again and again, Montana pressed down on the bear's belly. The bear coughed up a brown wallet, and a shoe that eerily resembled Cody's.

"Oh gosh, I can't watch anymore," Dawn whimpered, covering her eyes with her hands.

"Try one more time, Montana!" Sam encouraged, though he was just as sick as Dawn.

Giving the belly press one more time, Montana finally managed to get the bear to cough up Betty, who was reading a magazine.

"Ew," Sam and Scott both moaned, looking at the saliva-coated monkey.

Dawn reluctantly peeked through her hands. "Is Betty free?"

Sam nodded to her, and then made a calling motion with his hand. "That's enough. You can let the bear go now."

Satisfied, Montana got off the bear. All fight went out of the bear, and it slumped back, unconscious.

The prompt box reappeared for a final time, reading 'The BEAR has fainted.'

As Montana returned to Sam, Scott stomped over to Betty. "Alright, you. Come here!" He snatched the monkey up, ignoring the fact that Betty was still covered in saliva. Carrying Betty back over to his team, he asked, "Okay, we got the monkey back. Now what?"

"We need to get the coin out of Betty," Dawn reminded him, raising a finger.

"We can't forget about the other team," Sam added, "they could be on their way back to the vending machine."

"So we get the coin out of the monkey on the way, but how can we get back fast enough?" Scott inquired.

Dawn glanced up at Montana, and looked over to Sam. "How would you feel about asking Montana for one more favor?"

(Confessional- Sam)

The gamer chuckled. "Is it just me, or did that seem like a real life Monster Catchers battle? I didn't think that would actually work."

A flash transition returned to the Floating Salmon running through the woods. Jo led the pack, closely followed by Brick, Zoey, Manitoba, and Cameron bringing up the rear.

"I can see the vending machine," Jo said as she ran, pointing. "We're almost there."

"And the enemy doesn't seem to be in sight," Brick stated, looking around. "Looks like we'll have another victory on our hands."

While the others cheered at the thought of another win in a row, Manitoba frowned. He slid to a stop. "Hey, you mates sense that?"

The rest of the team stopped to look at him.

"Sense what?" Zoey asked, curious.

Jo rolled her eyes. "Who cares? The vending machine is right there. Keep moving!"

Manitoba held up a finger. "No, wait. Feel that." Manitoba pressed a hand to the ground, feeling vibrations. "We've got company!"

Cameron squeaked fearfully. "What is it?"

"Judging by the vibration's strength, a moose."

Brick and Zoey's eyes widened as the pair exchanged a look. "The moose from earlier!" Brick exclaimed. "You don't think…"

Then the team started to hear a rumbling noise. Cameron was the first to notice the source. He pointed back the way they came. "Guys, Bears!"

Jo squinted down at Cameron. "We just established that it was a moose, Pencil Neck."

Cameron shook his head, and pointed with more emphasis. "No, the Bears! They're riding the moose!"

Looking where Cameron was pointing, the whole team gasped.

Several yards away and coming up fast was Sam, Dawn with Betty in her arms, and Scott all on Montana's back.

Jo quickly motioned to her team with her arm. "Move it! Go, go, go!" The team scrambled to obey, and Jo followed after them, quickly jumping in the lead again.

However, the Floating Salmon's speed was no match for Montana, who quickly overtook them, and the team on his back cheered.

Chris watched the challenge live feed on his monitor, and turned away from it when the feed he had just been watching, the Confused Bears on Montana, burst into the meeting area. The three campers slid off Montana's back, and Dawn and Scott ran for the vending machine.

Sam stayed with Montana, and patted the moose on the side. "You did a great job, today! Montana, I release you." Montana huffed at Sam, and then stomped away past the vending machine, most likely to return to his herd.

Chris and Sam walked over to Dawn and Scott, who were by the vending machine. "You guys are the first team back," Chris informed them, "where's the coin?"

"We have it," Dawn said, looking down at Betty. "There's just a slight issue."

"Well, we've got to work fast," Scott remarked, "the other team is going to be here soon, and we don't have time to wait for the coin to come out the monkey's other end. Give it here." He yanked the creature from Dawn's arms, and started doing the Heimlich maneuver on her tiny body.

(Confessional- Scott)

"Since Dawn is getting on my case, I have to make it look like I'm actually trying to win," Scott reasoned. "I mean, it won't matter in the end, but still gotta put on an act. You know?"

"Spit it out. Spit it out," Scott grunted every time he jabbed Betty in the stomach.

Dawn watched fretfully. "Oh, please do be careful."

"Sometimes you can't win by being careful, fairy princess." Scott retorted, still getting nothing from Betty.

The Floating Salmon arrived in the meeting area.

"Oh no, they're already at the vending machine," Zoey cried out. "We're too late!"

"Maybe not," Jo said, looking at their opponents. After a moment, she laughed. "Freddy Freckles is trying to make the monkey cough something up. I bet it swallowed their coin." Holding up her team's coin, she added haughtily, "But ours didn't." Jo jogged over to the machine.

"Go, Jo, go!" "Hurry!" Jo's teammates shouted encouraging words.

"They're coming!" Sam exclaimed, going into a panic.

"I know!" Scott yelled, putting more force into his jabs. Finally, a glint of yellow flew out of Betty's mouth.

Dawn caught the coin. "I got it!" She turned to insert it in the machine, and slotted it in milliseconds before Jo got there.

"No!" Jo slid to her knees in defeat, sliding past the machine.

Scott dropped Betty to join Sam and Dawn in cheering, while Jo lowered her head. Betty shook her fist at Scott, and scampered off back into the woods.

"Game over!" Chris announced. "Team Maskwak wins the challenge!"

Jo's team moaned at losing both the challenge and their winning streak.

Standing next to the vending machine, Chris continued to say, "Today's snack food is from our Japanese affiliate- Chef Hatchet's Total Drama Yum Yum Happy Go Time Fish Tails!" Turning to face both teams who assembled before him, he said, "Team Kinosewak, it's time for you to vote to determine who's going in the cannon."

Having not attended an elimination ceremony since Anne Maria's a few days ago, the Floating Salmon looked at one another nervously. Well, most of them. Manitoba looked around skeptically while Jo leered at her teammates as if she dared them to vote her off.

A flash cut to later that evening, the Confused Bears were returning to their campsite as the sun set. In Scott's hands was a bag of the Total Drama Yum Yum Happy Go Time Fish Tails, and he had already torn it open.

"Ugh, I am so glad that we finally won a challenge again," Scott said, digging into the bag and scooping a handful of candied fish tails into his mouth. "Oh yeah, this is the good stuff."

"I should warn you those fish tails appear to have quite the negative energy," Dawn spoke up, pointing at the bag.

Sam shook his head good-naturedly. "Aw, don't be like that, Dawn. We won! How can there possibly be any negative energy in our camp?" Without warning, he flung his arms around his two teammates. "Group hug!"

"Uh, yeah. Group hug," Scott reluctantly joined in, reaching an arm around Sam while Dawn did the same on the gamer's other side.

They stayed like that for a few moments before the loudspeakers rang to life for the second time of the day.

"Uh, could Team Maskwak join Team Kinosewak at the elimination area?" Chris requested, sounding miffed. "Now!"

Breaking their group hug, the three campers looked at each other in confusion.

A fading transition switched the scene from the confused winners to both teams at the bonfire that night. While the Floating Salmon sat on the stump seats, the Confused Bears stood off to the side. Both teams showed bewilderment at the latter team attending. Mike was back in control of his body, and even though his team had caught him up on the day's events, he was just as confused as them about the situation.

"Team Kinosewak," Chris began to say, an angry expression on his face. "You have cast your votes and made a decision. Normally, we would go with what the votes say." The team looked at each other, wondering where the host was going with his speech. "But tonight, things will be decided differently, and that includes Team Maskwak not being immune from tonight's elimination."

Both teams gasped at the twist, and suddenly the three members of the Bear team were staring back and forth.

Zoey tentatively raised a hand. "Uh, Chris? What's going on?"

Stepping out from behind his oil drum podium, Chris marched over to the two teams. "One of you has decided to cross a line. At some point today, someone stole two important things of mine. My wallet, and my cellphone."

"What, and you think we did it?" Jo shot back, crossing her arms over her chest. "Maybe it was one of your interns, suddenly tired of all the crap you put them through?"

Brick nodded in agreement with the jockette. "She does have a good point. While I would never condone stealing under any circumstances, one of your interns stealing from you would make sense."

Growing increasingly frustrated, Chris put his hands on his hips. "It wasn't them. I already checked. So if it wasn't them, it had to be one of you. Here's what's going to happen- you're all going to empty your pockets, and whoever has my stuff is getting in that cannon. I don't have a problem with you kids stealing from each other, but when you steal from me, that's crossing some boundaries."

"What if nobody has anything in their pockets?" Mike asked.

"Then as punishment, both teams are losing a person tonight." The campers all gasped again at that answer. "Hey, if nobody owns up, then you all have to pay the price somehow." Lifting his hand, he ordered, "Up off your butts, all of you. Empty your pockets."

The camera followed the campers checked their pockets, from Jo to the right and closest to Chris all the way to Scott on the far left near the cliff edge.

Jo… only had a whistle.

Brick… had a few berries.

Cameron… only had a pencil.

Mike… pulled out a gold medallion with his face on it.

Zoey… had a few extra hair ties.

Dawn... didn't appear to have any pockets.

Scott… had the shark tooth he used for whittling.

Sam… he dropped what he found in his pockets out of horror.

Chris's wallet and phone fell at Sam's feet.

Everyone inhaled sharply when they saw Chris's designated items on the ground.

"Sam," Scott glanced from the host's things to the gamer. "You're a thief?"

(Confessional- Scott)

"Okay," the devious guy whittled at a piece of wood with his shark tooth knife, "so I noticed on our ride back to the vending machine that Dawn didn't have any pockets. Should've checked that before I put my plan into action. My bad." Shrugging as if to say 'oh well', he continued to whittle. "After that, I figured I would be sunk if I was caught with the stuff, so I pawned it off on Sam. Besides, if the guy can manage to get help from a moose, he might be someone that needed to be cut sooner than later."

Sam shrunk back from the stares he was receiving from everyone. "I swear I don't know how those got in my pockets. I'm being framed!"

Chris approached him, and knelt down to pick up his stuff. "A likely story," he said with a suspicious scowl. Cradling his things with one arm, he pointed at Sam. "Sam, you're out of the game!"

"No, please!" Sam pleaded, putting his hands together. "I'm innocent!"

Chef walked over, and effortlessly tossed the gamer onto his shoulder, carting him down to the Cannon of Shame.

"Innocent!" Sam called out. As he disappeared from the remaining campers' sight, they all silently glanced between each other, unsure of what to say.

Chris tucked his phone in one of his shirt pockets, and then did a quick peek inside his wallet to account for everything that was supposed to be in it. Finding everything to be to his satisfaction, he slid it into his back pocket. Clearing his throat, he addressed the campers. "Team Kinosewak, you can head back to your campsite. Team Maskwak, you can stay and watch Sam be blasted away if you want."

Team Kinosewak reluctantly left the bonfire area while Chris went down to join Chef in loading Sam into the cannon. Dawn and Scott stayed put.

"I'm gonna head back to the treehouse," Scott said after a moment, pointing the way with his thumb. "Want to come?"

Dawn shook her head. "No thanks." Pursing her lips, she thought of something, and rushed past Scott, surprising him. "There's something I need to do."

A flash forward to a few minutes later, Sam was loaded into the cannon with a helmet on his head.

"I don't understand," Sam said loudly, "I won the level, but how'd I get a game over?"

"I don't know," Chris retorted, not in the mood for teasing like usual. "Why don't you ask my stuff you stole?"

"Sam, wait!" The voice of Dakota shouted.

Chris, Chef, and Sam to the best of his ability, looked over to see Dakota running down to the cannon.

Despite his situation, Sam smiled a little. "Aw, you came to see me off."

"I'm going to miss you, Sam," Dakota replied with a pout. "Dawn told me what happened, and I ran over here as fast as I could. Don't worry. I'll figure out how this happened, and make everything good again."

"Thanks, Dakota!" The gamer beamed at her, causing her to blush. "That means a lot."

Chris made a gagging noise. "Yeah, moment over. You kids are so sappy, I want to hurl." Pulling out the remote, he pressed it.

"Look me UUUUUPPPPP!" Sam hollered as he was shot out of the cannon. Dakota's loving expression crumpled into sadness as she watched the only boy on the island who understood her fly away into the distance.

Chris finally smiled once Sam was out of sight. "Well, that wasn't how I expected the elimination to go when I woke up this morning," he said to the camera, doing his usual outro. "Will the next ceremony be as eventful? Will I finally learn to keep better tabs on my stuff? Seven campers remain. Find out who shows us their cannon-do spirit next time on Total Drama Pahkitew Island!"

As the camera zoomed out to show the island from afar like usual, there was a glimpse of Dakota still watching the point where Sam vanished with a heartbroken frown.

I'm probably going to get a lot of flack for this one. Sam is one of my favorite ROTI campers. As a gamer, he felt so relatable, and it was nice that even a dork like him could get together with a heiress like Dakota. It felt so good seeing how much love he got after the fourth season ended, but then All-Stars happened, and I was disappointed by how he got eliminated and how people complained about his inclusion in the season being pointless. Suddenly, he wasn't as popular anymore. The same most likely holds true with mostly everyone else on the canon AS cast, but it still stings as a fan for each of them. I had to eliminate Sam to a) give Scott some villain cred, and b) give Dakota some room to act independently without him around. There's probably going to be some criticism for essentially fusing Ella's canon elimination and Sam's AS elimination, but hopefully this will go over better because there's no BS coin flip and instead of doing the theft himself, Sam was framed. Plus, how hilarious is it that Scott's plan to frame Dawn was foiled by her lack of pockets?

Since this episode was going to be Sam's elimination, I decided to make it a big shout-out to Pokemon since his ROTI episode was a shout-out to Donkey Kong. I knew I wanted Sam to have a mock Pokemon battle with the bear, but had trouble figuring out a suitable animal that could be worked into the story until I realized that Brick and Zoey mentioned a moose early on, and a moose would possibly be strong enough to fight a bear. Originally, I had the moose named Maine, but the name seemed too plain, so I switched it to Montana. Yes, Sam was inspired by Dakota when he came up with a name. I always felt Manitoba was introduced pretty late, especially since Mike's elimination came two episodes later, so I tried to introduce him a bit earlier and made up for the long wait by having him in control for most of the episode.

Sort of like Lightning's 'three strikes' with matches against Jo and surviving elimination, another rule of three was also applied here. Back in ROTI, Topher stole Chris's phone when he accidentally dropped it, and in AS, Duncan stole Chris's wallet. Both times, it took a few days before Chris realized they were missing, and it was too late to get them back by that point. For a third time, Scott stole both Chris's updated phone and his new wallet, but Chris managed to notice in time this round to get them back and punish the thief, even if the person he's punishing is incorrect.

Last thing, if anybody is a DuckTales fan, I've got a few new stories about DuckTales in that archive, so check them out. They're called 'Della, Donald, and Ducklings' and 'Same Time Next Month' if you're interested. Review in the box below, and remember, reviews are awesome!
