The Only One

After a business meeting at work, Scrooge McDuck made himself comfortable in his velvet chair inside his warm mansion that cold winters eve. He had barely noticed that he was starting to drift off to sleep when Mrs. Beakley gently tapped on his desk to get his attention.

"What is it Mrs. Beakley?" Scrooge asked his housekeeper with a groggy voice. "Is there someone here?"

Mrs. Beakley shook her head. "No sir, but the mail did come today and I thought you should take a look at this."

Scrooge looked at the single tan envelope laying on his desk sealed with red wax. He reached out and picked up the letter with caution, fearing that Beakley was playing a trick on him and that she had done something to it. But it was just an average letter that he had sworn he had seen from his past. He opened it up and immediately looked up at Mrs. Beakley. "Thank you Mrs. Beakley that will be all."

"You're welcome and sir you should really look into hiring a secretary..." Mrs. Beakley replied as she exited the room.

Once he was alone, Scrooge read through the letter faster than he had read anything else before. He never thought that he would actually receive a letter from his long time flame since they went their separate ways. Her handwriting was unmistakable and she still ended her letters to him with a simple heart with a coin drawn in the middle.

"Oh Goldie girl..." Scrooge finally said after a moment of processing her letter, "I can't believe you're coming to Duckburg."

He thought back to his Klondike days when he first met the seductive Goldie O'Gilt during a local dance in Dangerous Dan's Saloon. They were equals in every way imaginable and at the time he had even considered asking for her hand in marriage. Until one day she left town without him and broke his heart after taking a portion of the gold they were gonna use to start that new life together. Maybe she only loved him for the Gold, but he had truly felt like she was the one.

"I wonder what she wants to talk to me about..." Scrooge wondered as he picked up a old timey photo of him and Goldie together on his claim. Her arm wrapped around his waist and her head leaned against his chest, gazing up at him with the most loving look in her eyes.

Even though he would never admit it to anyone, he had never found love in any other woman after Goldie. Because she was the one that he could really see himself settling down with after he was done adventuring for new treasure. She was the only woman Scrooge truly loved and will continue to love until the day he dies.
