Alliance Citizens:

Major General Alyona Tereshchenko (SAMC): the commanding officer of the storied 4th Marine Division. A hard, to the point woman and veteran of both the First Contact War and the Traverse Campaign. An enlisted Marine's general and well loved by her subordinates.

Prime Minister Anita Goyle: humanity's first ambassador to the Citadel and now Prime Minister of the Systems Alliance. On her second term, considered unlikely to contest another election.

Fleet Admiral Kastanie Drescher (ret) (SAN): 81 years old. One of the SAN's first admirals, along with Jon Grissom, and has a great many things named after her. Orignally a naval officer who served the European Union, her papers on the potential of a 'space navy' attracted the attention of those attempting to set up the Systems Alliance Navy, prompting them to headhunt her specifically. They succeeded, and Counter Admiral Drescher, Deutsche Marine, became Rear Admiral Drescher, Systems Alliance Navy. Although Grissom was arguably the greater tactician, Drescher was an excellent commander and responsible for much of the logistical and organisational systems the Navy relies on. During the First Contact War, Drescher led the Second Fleet to relieve Shanxi, defeating the HN 33rd Fleet. After the war, Drescher continued to serve, eventually becoming the Chief of Defence before retiring at the age of 75.

Commandant Sora Nakano (SAMC): the commandant of the Systems Alliance Marine Corps.

Minister Jae-Eun Park: Minister for Foreign Affairs, the protege of Goyle and political ally of Donnel Udina.

Minister Idir Tabaamrant: Minister for Colonial Affairs.

Lieutenant Colonel Cheston (SAMC): a Manpower Officer on Arcturus Station, currently stationed at the Arcturus Marine Manpower Branch.

Lieutenant Priya Singh (SAN): the most junior of Admiral Steven Hackett's aide-de-camps and the daughter of Admiral Nitesh Singh.

Lieutenant Commander Yun (SAN): one of Admiral Hackett's aides.

Commander Frankston (SAN):the most senior of Admiral Hackett's aides.

Commander Rita McCormick (SAN): a Scottish naval officer, commanding officer of the SSV Trenton and Emilia Shepard's ex-wife.

Gunnery Sergeant Julia 'Jules' Alvarez (SAMC): a Pathfinder team sergeant and old friend of Commander Shepard's, as they went through Marine infantry training together.

Commodore Hannah Shepard (SAN): current commanding officer of the 50th Scout Flotilla , former XO aboard the Kilimanjaro and naval aviator. Veteran of the First Contact War, in which she was widowed. Remarried to Jean Laurent, two children - Commander Emilia Shepard (from her first marriage) and Nicolas Laurent-Shepard (from her second). Friends with Captain David Anderson.

Fleet Admiral Juliet Shepard (SAN): retired admiral, former Fleet Commander. Married to Lucas Shepard with three children - Henry, Shane and Hannah - and five grandchildren.

A:

AFE: Alliance Fitness Exam. Pronounced phonetically. Conducted both to get into the military and also to maintain fitness throughout service.

Above decks: decks that are higher to one's current deck.

AWOL: Absent without leave. Can refer to a temporary absence without intent to desert or desertion.

AJ: Army Jerk. Term for a soldier.

APC: Armored Personnel Carrier. Transports infantry to the combat zone quickly.

AFV: Armoured fighting vehicle. An armed combat vehicle protected by armour, generally combining operational mobility with offensive and defensive capabilities.

Air Boss: Air officer. The officer responsible for a ship's flight deck and its immediate airspace.

AJ Squared Away: A sailor who is always squared away/a lifer with no life outside the navy.

ASTRACOM: Strategic command.

ATRANCOM: Transport command.

AT: Anti-tank.

B

Batphone: internal circuit between a ship's bridge and engineering control room.

Bail Out: Repeated three times by the driver or commander of a vehicle, this is an order requiring all personnel to leave a vehicle, including the driver and gunner.

Boot (person): A person fresh out of boot; inexperienced or green. Marine term, extremely derogatory.

Butterbar: Derogatory term for second lieutenant

Bulkhead: Wall aboard a ship.

Belowdecks: Decks under one's current deck

Boogey: Unknown target. Unsure of hostility.

Bilge Juice: Illegal alcohol distilled onboard, usually in the spaces between the armour plates and hull.

Bitching Betty: Shipboard VI warnings.

Black Hole: Arcturus Station.

BOHICA: Bend Over, Here It Comes Again.

Birdie: any sailor in Naval Aviation.

Blink: pejorative term for a batarian.

C

Callies: disruptor torpedos.

Crash and Smash: The flight deck firefighting team. Also a naval aviation game involving long tables and a lot of beer.

Civvie: Civilian

Civvies or Mufti (as in 'I'm wearing my civvies'): Civilian clothing

Civvie Street: Life outside the military

Company Gunny (Quartermaster): Gunnery Sergeant in charge of the supplies of the Company.

CSM: Command Sergeant Major

CO/OC: Commanding officer, Officer Commanding

COP: Combat Outpost. Any secured position from a patrol base to anything smaller than a FOB, that Marines operate from.

CIC: Command Information Centre.

Charlie Foxtrot: Clusterfuck.

CHOP: Supply officer.

Commo: Comms Chief.

CHENG: chief engineer.

Cherry: Combat virgin.

CMC (Navy): Command Master Chief.

CMC (Marines): Commandant of the Marine Corps.

D

Deck: Floor aboard a ship.

Dismount: An order requiring passengers in a vehicle to leave a vehicle, excepting the driver and gunner.

Dog Watch: A short watch. Also used to refer to short terms of service.

Doc: respectful nickname for a hospital corpsman by Marines.

DoCA: Department of Colonial Affairs.

DoD: Department of Defence.

DMI: Department of Military Intelligence.

E

Eternal Patrol: A ship and its crew lost while on patrol/in space are said to be on Eternal Patrol.

F

FUBAR: Fucked Up Beyond All Reason/Recognition/Repair. Pronounced phonetically.

FOB: Forward Operating Base. A secure forward position used to support tactical operations. Pronounced phonetically.

FRAGO: Fragmentation Order. Used to make changes to an operations order without rewriting the whole thing. Pronounced phonetically.

Furlough: A temporary leave of absence from duty, often a vacation.

Flyboy: Pejorative for a sailor in a aviation billet.

FNG: Fucking New Guy. Either someone straight out of boot, or someone transferred into a new unit. Tends to make a mess.

FLOB: Freeloading Oxygen breather.

FOD: Foreign Object Damage.

Fruit Salad:

FFG: Forever Fucking Gone. Term for a ship that spends more time in space than docked.

FTN: fuck the Navy.

Fried Calamari: an electrocuted sailor.

G

Gator Freighter: planetary assault vessel; usually used to transport Marine units.

Guns: common nickname for a ship's CSO.

Gunny: nickname for a Gunnery Sergeant.

Grunt: Infantry Marine.

Ground-pounder: Army or Marine personnel.

H

Hatch: Door aboard a ship.

HUD: Heads up display, pronounced phonetically. Displays important information, usually using the visor of the helmet, such as kinetic barrier strength, tacnet map and status of friendlies in the same unit.

I

IFV: Infantry Fighting Vehicle. Supports the infantry in combat. (E.g the Mako)

J

Jarhead: Marine.

Jody: That civilian arsehole who steals your significant other while you're deployed; also a term for a cadence, due to the many referring to said civilian arsehole

Jonty/jaunty: Master-at-arms

JOC: Joint Operations Command.

K

KB: Kinetic Barrier

K-Kill: catastrophic/complete kill. When an armoured vehicle is completely destroyed, beyond any hope of repair and often killing the crew. Often occurs when an enemy attack causes a breach of fuel cells or 'cooks off' the vehicle's ammunition. Both the Mako and M-080 are designed in such a way as to attempt to direct an ignition of ammunition away from the crew-often still destroying the vehicle but saving the lives of the Marines inside.

L

Leave: Time where a member of the military has permission to be absent from duty.

Lifer: a service person who intends to stay in the military their working lives - or at least until twenty years and that sweet retirement package.

M

MAA: Master-At-Arms; naval MP.

Mango: reservist.

Mustang: An officer promoted from the enlisted ranks, as opposed to someone who joined as an officer. Examples include Commander Shepard and Admiral Hackett.

Mess: A dining facility where military personnel eat and socialise.

M-Kill: mobility kill. When an armoured vehicle is damaged so it is unable to move as a result of enemy fire, but is not necessarily beyond repair.

MECP: Marine Enlisted Commissioning Program. One of the pathways enlisted Marines of the rank of Lance Corporal and above can become officers.

Mess Hall Intelligence: gossip.

N

Nav/Gator: nicknames for a ship's navigator.

NavComm: Navy Command.

NCO: Non Commissioned Officer. Also referred to as noncomms. SNCO stands for Senior NCO and usually refers to NCOs holding or above the rank Staff Sergeant in the Marines and Sergeant First Class in the Army.

Ninety Day Wonder: a graduate of OCS.

NIS: Naval Investigative Service.

O

OPORD: Operations Order. An executable plan that directs a unit to conduct a military operation, detailing the situation, the mission and what activities the unit will have to undertake to complete the mission. Pronounced phonetically.

OpSec: Operational Security. The process of protecting small pieces of information that might be grouped together to get the big picture, such as being careful as to who may be eavesdropping on a conversation and not speaking openly on the extranet about troop movements, deployments, equipment shortages and the like.

Overhead: Ceiling.

Operator: A term used for an N7.

OCS: Officer Candidate School.

The Outside: civilian life.

OER/NCOER: Officer Evaluation Report/Non-Commisioned Officer Evaluation Report. Performance review by an officer's or NCO's immediate superior

P

Perscomm: Personnel Command.

PSG: Platoon Sergeant

PL: Platoon leader

POG: People Other than Grunts. A pejorative for non-infantry personnel. Pronounced phonetically.

PerSec: Personal Security. The protection of personal information that may be used to harm the Marine or sailor in question.

Port: Left.

R

RSM: Regimental Sergeant Major

REMF: Rear Echelon MotherFucker. Similar meaning to POG.

ROE: Rules of Engagement. ROEs are directives to military forces defining the manner and degree of force that may be applied. They provide authorisation and/or limitations on the use of force.

S

SAN: Systems Alliance Navy.

SAMC: Systems Alliance Marine Corps.

SASOC: Systems Alliance Special Operations Command.

Salty: An experienced sailor or Marine who has been in space for a great deal of time or has seen combat.

SABER: Readiness rating of the Alliance military. SABER 5 is lowest, with SABER 1 being the highest level of readiness.

SNAFU: Situation Normal, All Fucked Up. Pronounced phonetically.

Sitrep: Situation Report. A report on the current military situation in a particular area.

Shavetail: Inexperienced lieutenant.

Starboard: Right.

Shore leave: Leave of absence granted to a sailor or Marine aboard a ship to go groundside.

Squid, Gob, Swab: Pejoratives for sailor.

Sky Jockey: derogatory nickname for the Fleet by the Army.

Silent running: term used by Normandy vessels when utilising stealth systems.

Skipper: respectful term for a ship's captain or a Marine commander.

Skittles: flight deck crew.

SSV Neverdock: see 'FFG'.

SWCOT: Pronounced phonetically as 'so-cot', Space Warfare Command Officer Training is a course Marine, Aviation or Guard officers can undergo to become qualified to command a corvette or frigate. Commanding cruisers and heavier classes require time serving as a frigate commander and another course.

T

Tango: Phonetic alphabet for T, which stands for target. Enemy target.

TacNet: Tactical Network. An encrypted infonet that combined sensor and recon information, maps, topography, Blue Force Tracker and comms in order to expedite information transfer between all the moving parts of a military unit. Usually monitored by the CIC Officer or a communications specialist, who quarantines and organises information so leaders receive the info they need and aren't overwhelmed.

Top: First Sergeant.

TRAVCOMM: Traverse Command.

W

WARNO: Warning order-alerts a unit to stand by for a mission, giving the basic information. Details will follow in the mission OPORD.

Widow/Widower: A sailor's partner who looks for casual flings while they're on deployment. Prefixed with the theatre the sailor is deployed to, ie 'Traverse Widow'

X

XO: Executive officer (second in charge)

XO's Happy Hour: A daily, hour-long mandatory cleaning evolution.
