Draco resists the urge to shift nervously as he presents a neatly wrapped gift to his boyfriend.
"I thought I told you not worry about getting me something for my birthday," Charlie says, his eyes flickering between his face and the gift with unease.
"You did," he confirms. After a few moments, Draco rolls his eyes. "Just take it!"
The redhead seems reluctant take the gift from him, and he considers that Charlie is unaccustomed to receiving birthday gifts that haven't been homemade anymore. Charlie holds it in his hand for a long moment. "You really didn't need to get me anything."
Draco just gives him an unimpressed look, and Charlie sighs as he rips into the paper. He uncovers a worn, battered copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The redhead sneaks a glance at Draco before he opens the book to figure out why the other man would give him such a book when he had money to buy the newest copy.
There are two distinctive handwritings, and Charlie knows neither are the Slytherin's; Draco has far too neat handwriting for the one, and too small for the second. Flipping pages, Charlie sees notes written in the margins and corrections to entries in red ink.
When realization hits, the Gryffindor snaps the book shut and runs his hand over the cover. "You got me the original copy of Fantastic Beasts," he says awestruck.
Draco nods. "I figured you would like it. You should read the entry on Hungarian Horntails."
The other man briefly narrows his eyes at Draco then turns his attention to his task. He flips through the pages of the well-worn book with careful precision until he reaches the dragon entry. Draco notes the way that his expression changes from curiosity to pure happiness as he reads the note.
"I love you," Charlie says as he snaps his attention back to him. The smile Charlie gives the blond is wide and toothy. "This is the best present anyone ever given me."
When the book is safely put down, the redhead drags Draco into a deep kiss. After a few long moments, Draco pulls back and give the other man a real smile, his hands still tangled in his red hair. "Happy birthday, Charlie."
