Come Away to the Water
Prologue
Deep within the forest wild, the ancient magic sleeps. Hidden in gloom and moss, where bugs and shadows creep, she lies upon her hollow back and dreams of waters deep. The vale of shades has kept her here, locked away from earth and sun. For centuries the creature waits for the banshee's curse to be undone.
"Come," the old tree calls, piercing mystical rest. "Awake, fair lady. Come and play; come find me in the West."
Nemeton, her dear old friend, whom druids worshipped first, has called her forth from cursed land to quench her endless thirst. "Nemeton," she speaks his name, with voice as fresh as morning dew. "Your new power wakens me and draws me near to you. Searched I have a thousand years for man's most beautiful child. Why dost thou now waken me from my grave exiled? Dost thou come with tidings fair and sure; where I can find a man beautiful and pure?"
"Nature's terrible princess, in such a land am I, as would produce immortality as endless as the sky. The old witchcraft lingers still in a world yet new, where human hands have chopped me down and stolen me from you. Yet my astral roots they could not touch, which have drunk a million years; come now to the guardian and heal me with your tears. Hurry, goddess of the wood, forsake the land of the Midnight Sun. I shall give to you a youth fresh from childhood, with wit sharp as a gun, eyes as dark as thy cherished bark, and a voice as soothing as the lark. I am your light upon the stone, bringing you to promised thrills. Thou shall never again be alone, when thou comest to Beacon Hills."
Her amber eyes glowed suddenly, and blinked in bright new day. She arched her back, and flicked her tail, brushing the cobwebs away. The venerable tree who had been born, as she from primordial occult, now called her forth into the world to fulfil her vile result. She would not fail, nor not again, to peer beyond the veil and establish her horrible, eternal reign. So her blackened heart bespake: "the nightmare princess will arise, when the brightest son drowns in the lake."
Welcome to my new fic! There's lots of excitement to come. For some reason, I wrote this prologue in prosaic rhyming verse. I promise, the rest of the chapters will be normal! Haha. Does anyone out there have a guess as to what creature my "nature's terrible princess" is? Leave a review, lovelies! ~NTTS
