It's my first time writing a kataang fanfic! and i really love modern day Kataang fics
Katara hears her phone ring just as soon as she had placed it down on the table. She slides it open to see that her classmate had instantly replied as soon as she had e-mailed him that they had switched their notebooks by mistake. She gives her location and he promises to get there as soon as he is able. Placing the phone down again, she pulls out the notebook in question.
They had taken a test, earlier that day, and everyone was required to pass a specific homework notebook every time they had a quiz. These notebooks were very difficult to find so most people had the same type, they just varied in the color of the cover. Coincidentally, her seatmate, Aang, had the same one as hers.
She must have taken his by accident when she was hurrying to fix her things after the quiz. It didn't help that he had been engaging her in small talk, asking about her plans for the day and how the test went. Katara didn't hint too much that she thought it was very difficult since she noticed Aang had finished way earlier than her.
It was around four in the afternoon, when she was about to rewrite her notes, that she noticed it wasn't hers. She and Aang weren't particularly close, just had a few classes together, so it was a bit difficult finding his contact information. She only managed to find his e-mail address from the class directory.
She smoothens the creases on his notebook and decides to read it just in case she had missed any important points from the last discussion. Despite being younger than most of the class, Aang was pretty smart. Well, smarter than her, anyway. The only reason their scores were always on the same level was because he was often lazy and didn't bother much to put an effort on his grades.
Flipping over the first few pages, she notices how dirty and bad Aang's handwriting was. Katara remembered someone saying that most smart people have bad handwriting since they focused more on getting it right rather than making it look clean. She flips over the pages once more and comes across some doodles on the top of the pages. On one of the pages, she sees a poorly-done calligraphy of her name.
The corner of her mouth curves a little.
She wasn't new to things like this. Katara had had her fair share of boys liking her back in middle school. And, being the silly kids they were, your name written on someone's notebook was an indication of them liking you. With the way guys were acting now in her university, it was nice seeing something so pure for a change. She finds it even more adorable how his handwriting of her name improves each time it pops up.
Her phone rings and there is another e-mail from Aang saying that he just got out of the elevator. She looks up to see him enter through the doors and wave when he spots her.
"Hey," he rummages through his satchel as he approaches her. "Sorry about that. I guess I wasn't paying attention."
"It's fine. I think I was the one who took yours first."
He chuckles and finally pulls out her notebook. "Here you go."
Before he was able to get ahold of his notebook, Katara flipped his open, located a free space on top of one page, and proceeds to scribble her name. It was far better than the attempts Aang had made.
"Here," she slides it back to him, page open. "That's how you should write my name."
Aang couldn't make out at first why, but, when he did, his eyes widened in horror and his face began to redden. Katara tries, and fails, to hide her laughs when he tries to speak but fumbles with his words.
"I'll see you in class, Aang."
He nervously waves goodbye, walking backwards and bumping into someone. Katara finds herself laughing out now and she tells him to take care and pay more attention next time.
She is still smiling when he left and now she finds herself looking forward to their next class.
