***Hello, everyone! This was just a little drabble idea I came up with-y'know, one of those two AM ideas, as I call them. So don't expect too much. Anyways, Gilbert and Collin belong to Becky Sloan and Joe Pelling, this nonsense plot belongs to me, and let's roll!
Collin paced the floor as he thought, his vast mind about to be overloaded. Several thoughts and feelings were clambering for space, and he wanted to acknowledge them all. It was just hard for him to sort them all out.
At last, he checked his internal timer. Even as a humanoid being, he still possessed computer functions. The digital clock showed that it was 11:37 PM. Everyone else in the house was asleep.
Collin sighed. He leaned against a wall and slid to sit down, pulling his legs up to his chest. He put his face down on his knees. The fact that his glasses had been knocked off by doing so didn't even matter to him...
"You dropped these."
The teacher looked up and saw a hand offering him back his glasses. He put them back on and found that it was Gilbert, in his human form, standing there.
Now, Gilbert rarely took his human form. Well, he hardly even spoke half the time.
"What are you doing down here so late?" Collin asked, not standing up.
"Tony and Paige are doing..." Gilbert trailed off. His room was right next to theirs, so an end to his sentence wasn't necessary.
"Understood," Collin said. His expression was downcast as he put his chin back on his knees and focused his gaze on the floor.
"I'm guessing something's on your mind?" Gilbert guessed.
Collin's eyes flitted up to him. "How obvious is it?" he asked dryly.
Gilbert sat down on the floor. If anything, he was a good listener. "Tell me about it," he said patiently, looking at his friend.
Collin sighed as his thoughts fell into place. When they made sentences, he melted down to his computer form. "There's no denying it. Everyone wants sleeker models. Even Manny, Robin, and Harry all like that little laptop what's-her-face more than me. For once, I get it. My digital dancing and digital style would've sufficed and entertained a few decades ago. Now, everyone wants models like that laptop or phones. I'm just outdated, and my only use would be as a paperweight. A bulky, talking, clever paperweight," he explained. When he switched back to his humanoid form, he curled back up.
Gilbert let those words register, and he had to admit something as well. "I feel the same way. About myself, not about you."
Collin raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?" he asked.
So, Gilbert melted down to his globe form, and he let thoughts flow from his mouth. "You don't see too many people walking around with globes nowadays, do you? If anyone has them, they're just antiques or... something like that. People use laptops and phones to find their way around and learn about the world," he said. Then, he changed back into his humanoid form.
"Just like people find information, digital dancing, and digital style on those sleek models," Collin said. He sighed and looked at Gilbert. "I guess we've been left behind, huh?" he asked.
Gilbert nodded sadly. Then, he gave his one friend a bittersweet smile. "But we have each other, don't we?" he asked.
Collin thought about it. Then, he nodded, and returned the expression.
"Yeah," he said. "We do."
***And there you have it. Collin is my favorite DHMIS character (I have a shirt that says "Digital Style"), so I hope I kept him in character. As for Gilbert... he doesn't really talk, so I wasn't sure on what to do. Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed and I'll see you all in the next one! Bye!
