Chapter 5
Dishonesty
After leaving the lab, Caitlin makes her way to Cisco's workspace down the hallway. When she makes it to the doorway, she stops before entering. She sees Cisco working on something and takes a steady breath before entering. She hates this, lying to him, but she has no choice. Both Barry and Ciscos' lives are in her hands. "What are you working on?" She crosses her arms as she approaches him. He looks over at her. "Hey Caitlin, I'm just trying to figure out how to help Barry with the Speed Force." She gives him a nod. "Any luck?" Cisco shakes his head and she can see the frustration within his eyes.
Caitlin knows that he won't stop until he figures out a way to help Barry, just like she wouldn't. She sighs to herself. "So, what's up?" Her eyes lock with his. "I just talked with Kamilla and she told me that you've been distant with her." Cisco sighs to himself then shakes his head. "Is that what she told you?" Caitlin nods and hopes she'll be able to convince him. She knows that Cisco is the only other person besides Barry in the world that knows her better than anyone else. "Well, she's lying. She's the one that's been acting different and cold towards me. I'm not even sure she wants to be with me anymore." Caitlin can hear the pain within his voice, and she feels an overwhelming sense of guilt wash over her.
She takes another steadying breath before getting closer to Cisco. "I know that's not true and so do you." He turns back to her and she can see the storm raging inside of him. "How can you be so sure of that, Caitlin? You haven't been around her much in the past few weeks. It's like she's a completely different person." Caitlin has to take a moment to think about how to respond to that. What could she say? She's acting like a different person because she is a different person. It suddenly dawns on her that there is one way that she could fix the situation, one way she can fix things between Cisco and Fake Kamilla. She can tell him the biggest lie that she's ever told anyone, it's her only choice. "Cisco, Kamilla told me that she thinks the reason that you've been so distant is because you found out that she cheated on you while you were gone. She was afraid of how you'd react to the truth." Caitlin hears her words falter at the end and her heart squeezes. She hates lying to him, absolutely hates it, but even worse she hates seeing the pain dimming his eyes.
She watches as tears begin brimming in his eyes. "Did she cheat?" Caitlin nods her head and then places her hand on his shoulder. "I'm so sorry, Cisco." Caitlin feels him tense up and she knows he's crying. She feels sick at what she's just told him. A terrible silence follows and she's not sure what to do next. She wonders if he'll ever forgive her for lying to him when he finds out the truth. Guilt once again washes over her, as Cisco slowly turns to meet her eyes. As expected, his eyes are red from crying, and her heart clenches in response. "Thank you for telling me, Caitlin." She gives him a halfhearted nod and then he continues his work, she suspects to distract himself.
Caitlin silently walks out of Cisco's lab and makes her way to the elevator. She feels the tears she's been holding in the last few minutes start to fall down her cheeks. She hates herself for doing that to him, for lying to him. He didn't deserve the terrible lie she just told him. "Cait." Her heart stops and then she freezes in the middle of the hallway. Caitlin knows she can't turn to look at him because he'd want answers as to why she's so upset. So, she does her best to will herself to move forward. "Cait, are you okay?" Caitlin can hear the concern etched in his voice and she wishes she could ease his worry, but she knows she can't. She closes her eyes for a moment and takes a sharp breath in. A beat passes before she feels Barry touch her shoulder from behind and gently turn her around to face him.
His eyes take her in, and she can see the concern in his handsome features deepen for her. It's the closest they've been to each other in a long time, possibly ever. She finds herself holding her breath as his eyes lock with hers. "I know you're upset about the possibility of taking your mom's place, but is there something else bothering you?" Once again, she finds herself trying to hold back the tears that are threatening to escape her eyes. Caitlin finds it hard to avoid his eyes being this close and taking her in so keenly. She wonders if he knows how much being this close to him affects her. "Barry I…" She stops short from telling him the truth because saving his life is more important than the truth right now. "You're scaring me." She takes a sharp breath in and then she fakes a smile. "No, I'm just going to miss everybody." He gives her a nod. "So, you're definitely going then?" Caitlin gives him a nod of her own. "I have to, my mom needs me." She does her best to hide the pang she feels in her heart and continues smiling through it. She prays he doesn't ask her more questions, doesn't try to dig deeper to find out what's really going on with her.
Barry brings her into his arms, and she feels herself completely breakdown. She thought she could be strong about this, if it meant saving both Barry and Cisco, but she's not. "We're going to miss you too, Cait." He takes a breath and she can feel his warm breath near her ear. Electricity fills her entire body. "I'm going to miss you." Caitlin feels like she's on fire by his sweet words and the feeling of his breath on her neck. Having him so close yet lying right to his face. It's a weird mix of emotions but she can't help but bury her head into his neck. She feels him hold her tighter to him. "I'm here for you, Cait." Caitlin can't hold back the tears, as he continues to hold her. This is all she's ever wanted, he's all she's ever wanted, she just wishes that this had happened in some other way.
